  • Hi Les i love the videos and i watch everyone i can get my hands on. I am in Toronto Canada and i have used your advice on other videos i have watched. What i found is what happens on one stand does not work exactly on another stand, but being consistent usually has good results. Love the show and hell yes you are in my opinion the best i have ever seen in killing running coyotes. I have watched a lot but you are truly on top. I use the savage 22-250 witch i have put the boyds thumb hole stock and a timneys trigger gauged at 2 lbs, and i do my own reloading and lord god i love it. Best of luck and keep killing them, i also use the Hornady 50 and 55 grain vmax, just fantastic.

  • Great informative video!! Just getting started into coyote hunting here in Virginia. Just purchased me a .243 caliber Savage rifle & scope. Going to buy me an electronic caller & decoy in next couple of weeks. We have tons of coyotes here in Virginia!! Feeling very confident. Got a lot to learn & the best way to learn it is to get out there & experience it!!! Subscribed!!

  • answered it perfectly, I was doubting my calling do to the fact I was having a little less success. meant to ask how much ground is enough, like you've said about anyone will let ya hunt predators. I believe more is better and have had good luck with all I have picked up this year. I try to have enough where I can hunt a couple times a week and if possible and not have to hunt the same spot twice in two weeks. keep it up man, I'll always watch and support.

I went out after watching this video... layed down on top of a gravel pile and waited 45 minutes in some cold Saskatchewan weather. I was ready to pack her in and finally i had 3 coyotes walk up the old road and take a snooze, when they awoke they came over to see what was up took two of them at under 200 yards. Bottom line listen to Les... wait it out!

  • Talk about being patient, 1 hr 30 min stand fox, 3 coyotes. spotted a fox today on my way into stand, tried setting up, saw me and ran, started calling, bout 15 min in I see this darker thing right in the glimmering snow from sun, looked like a bush, bout 150 yds away, 10 min later I see a yote walking from where bush was and I see bush is gone, I ranged 288 (I thought), I have a 17, put an in over back, I shoot and miss over back 1 in. Took 6 shots cuz in deep snow and missed all. Re ranged and was 208. Turn call off. I’m pissed, I sit there and call my wife after 10 min of crying, on speaker and it’s 10 min into call and no joke, have two coyotes walking in from where the missed coyote ran. 800+ yards. I start doing pup, they just walking a fence line away, I turn to rabbit, they start coming in very slowly as if they can’t hear me but slowly walking my way never looking, I started doing a female invit. Howl as I go from pup, to rabbit, to guinea pig, to vole, to magpie. 30 min later they finally getting within 300, one stops and sits, the other keeps slowly working step every 20 sec. I put on fox pup and it starts trotting. 10 yds, dropped it in the chest. I had 2 opportunities in 1hr and 30 min. Without moving. Greatest roller coaster and patience hunt I ever done.

I have not heard a single coyote near us for some time, now it sounds like they are moving up the hill for breeding and den establishment. While I still do not have a single dog in my bag, the call pattern you described for this time of year is getting some response. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. • Good Question JD! Typically, I like to hunt a coyote during the fur season and then let them raise their young, etc. If you kill a female in May for instance, there is a good chance that she is nursing the pups and they will probably die if you kill her. I do not usually like to kill them until their fur is prime, and that is in the fall of the year. Just my $.02. I do kill problem coyotes during the summer/early fall as well. Thanks for watching/commenting. LJ

  • Great tips. We usually sit 20-30 minutes, but we are hunting a lot different terrain than you do. We usually hunt fields along heavily wooded areas, so we can't see them coming for miles like you can. So they can be on the way and we can't even see them. Even after sitting for 1/2 hr. we have had coyote's coming in as we walk out. One time after a hunt a buddy and I just sat there discussing our next move and had a coyote come in around the 45-50 minute mark. Question; Do you ever change up your distress call tone in a stand? If something didn't work, I will go from a deeper jackrabbit distress type call to a higher pitched bird, or a lower pitched fawn distressed before we leave. Sometimes it works.

  • Les thanks for your videos! Have you called the Southeast? I'm in Alabama. Been doing this for a couple years now. I have killed a few but they are hard to call in the thick stuff. It is almost impossible to get them out in the open. I get a glimpse of them and they are gone. Any advise or ideas on getting them to expose themselves for a shot?

    @dm5943@dm59437 жыл бұрын
    • DM, no I have not! Obviously it is a time and money issue. I do not have time nor the financial resources to travel to parts of the country where there is alot of small parcels and many different land owners. It takes far too much time for me to try and hunt down land owners, etc when I do not live around there. Plus, I need to "like" the look of the land with my eyes. My eyes tell me if there is a possibility of calling potential or not. Hope that helps. When calling thick timber, the goal is to get them to come to the edge. Not necessarily get them to come out across an open. I set up so that I have a good shot to the edge. Watch my Calling Competition part 2 video. I talk about calling them in the thicker country. Thanks and good luck. LJ

    • Travis, thank you for watching and for finding my channel! Shotgun would be great, but I would lean more towards a 22 Mag if I only had a chance at one weapon. You would extend your range on what you could effectively kill a coyote or other predator, decrease the amount of "bang" when you would shoot it, plus it would teach you to be very, very precise on your aiming and taking a shot. You would become a fine marksman. Just my $.02. I will do a video in the near future outlining some of what you are talking about. Thanks again. LJ

  • Hey Les- got a couple questions - was out in south sask- it was by far the worst calling day i have ever had- i attribute it to it being warmer than usual, next to no snow which is not normal, mating season is happening and im sure theyve been pressured a bit as well. saw about 8-10 coyotes- they would be bedded and not even get up for a distress call, or vocals, or pup distress- we usually come home with 5-6 coyotes in a day earlier in the season. my question is have you ever tried using coyote decoys while calling coyotes, pr even a mojo rabbit style Decoy. i dont know if ive ever seen you use one and was wanted to know your thoughts on them. Thanks Avery

    @averyabood6155@averyabood61557 жыл бұрын
    • Hey Avery, my question to you is if you saw the coyotes and they would not budge, where you walking in to your spot as they watched you? Calling from a pickup? Or did they happen to come over a hill and just not want to come in further? Something seems fishy in what you are saying or perhaps you left some of that out of your story? I told another guy this same thing.......You and your buddies go out to a bar. This very good looking girl is really into you and wants to get to know you and is enjoying talking to you......Your buddies then tell you, "Hey Avery, We are going to drive 50km to the next town and go to a Timmys and then head another 50km to another bar...lets go" Would you stay with the girl or go with the boys to get something to eat? Pretty simple math isnt it? Human nature? Coyote Nature is about furthering the population of coyotes. To heck with eating when there is breeding to be done.....Catch my drift?

  • Les ! I'm in need of some help! I'm calling thick timber / willows in southeastern Manitoba Canada. The weather is warmer then it usually is being -5 to +5 Celsius right now. The land I'm hunting is on a creek , the creek has an INSANE amount of tracks up and down everywhere in and out of the creek. Now to the North / West of the creek the thick timber is where the coyotes seem to hang out. I've started with the distress ( rabbit or faun ) there is a high deer population in the area and also wolves. Then I move onto a coyote pack yip and howl and EVERY TIME! They answer back with yipping and howing like crazy! Seems to be a large amount of them ( 5-12) lots of noise and then silence... sat for 45min and nothing came out. We played the wind and we were sitting about 250 yards out from the willows in a small patch of spruce tress. Have yet to spot anything yet but the signs of wildlife are everywhere and I'm not to sure what I'm doing wrong. If you could help me out I would really appreciate it! Love your videos and I try and do everything you're talking about and use all your free knowledge to better myself. Keep up the great work! Thanks!

    • Hi Great White North Poject , thank you for watching and commenting on my channel! I would think that it is just in the middle of breeding season for you and coming to the end. In all of the times that I was calling Canada, it seemed that the calling really picked up in early March. I had to struggle some times that I was up there but still killed coyotes. Had to give them a long long time. Sometimes 45+ minutes to show up. It sounds to me like the coyotes know that you are there. Also, dont ever confine yourself to one calling spot. Jump in the pickup and go 50 miles from that location and call somewhere else. My $.02. I hope you continue to watch my channel and have a great day! LJ

  • Hi Les, I have been getting educated by your great advice. I am an old man and I am trying to find a hobby that I can do and I think yote killing might be the thing. Out of all your great youtube advice I have not heard you say anything about hunting yotes around prairie dog towns. What do you think about making a stand along a pd town that has been shot up a day or two before? Is it worth the time to do even if you see scat and tracks when you go to the pd town to sharpen shooting skills?

    • Hey Ray, thank you for joining in on my KZhead channel! Great question as well! Prairie Dog towns are a great place to call from! there is always coyotes nearby and alot of times, a coyote will sleep right in a prairie dog town. Thanks again and I hope you continue to watch and learn! LJ

    • Ray Andrews, After shooting up a prairie dog town for over an hour, I got set up in a different spot from where we were shooting. I waited for 10-15 minutes, then howled a few times. We had two coyote's come in, in just a couple of minutes. Guessing the coyote's thought other coyote's were coming into their territory, taking their easy meal.

  • How long to call for a particular distress sound? How much pause in-between until next calling attempt? When doing mouth calls, in what ways does this become different. Also..Good Question here... when mouth-calling... towards the end of that particular calling attempt... do you attempt to wind down the sound to make it sound like the animal is petering-out and losing energy/air, running out of breath at the end there? I've been trying to do that lately to similate or send out that signal that I'm fading fast over here, ya better come get me, fresh meat! Another question, I'm assuming when you're hand-calling and you manage-in to call-in a bunch of Turkey Vultures and Condors high over head... that this is a good sign that you're doing something right, correct?

  • Thanks for posting these great videos. I hunt in upstate ny mostly on farms with fields and woods. I can call coyotes to me all the time. I just can't get them to close the distance. They come to just out of sight howl sniff and snort and carry on, then leave. Sometimes they wind us I know. But there are times I know we snuck in and weren't winded but still they come to just out of sight, stop, and leave. I do all my hunting at night because I have never had any success during the day. Success to me is getting some sort of response from a coyote on a set. A kill is a kill, that's winning the game. We just started hunting last year and have not had a kill. Like I said we can call them in, just not close enough to see or shoot. Gut any suggestions?

    • Thanks for watching dirtydog. Let my videos sink in. There is an encyclopedia of advice in all of my videos. Patience is the #1 lacking component of most every caller. Make them want to come check you out. Sit tight and quit timing your sets to a specific time. Thats my advice. Thanks again for watching. LJ

  • good morning les not sure if I'm right or not but it seems when howling you can tell if the coyotes are willing to respond to it if they howl back to you more than one it seems they will respond and other times they won't seems to my experience the early season they will respond to howling but not so much in late season just my experience in howling but we have tons of coyotes around here you sould come and hunt with me some time these coyotes are big and I have have quite a bit of land to hunt on I just think as much as I hunt em I feal I should have more fur in the freezer but that's just me talk to ya later

  • Wow, Les you just nailed coyote calling for the time of year in this video. I hope people will pay attention to this java with Les chat. You nailed perfectly how to call coyotes in Michigan and any other colder weather climates. I am sure you have never hunted here in Michigan, but the breeding and call selection you described was spot on for the times of year. Silas, I hope I didn't spell your name wrong, good question to ask Les. You got him to post and respond on a great topic. Les big thumbs up to you and your family and your videos.
