My brain honestly accepts the dynamic island over the notch. Something about having the image continue around the entire phone instead of being disconnected from the notch allows me to ignore the new design more and make it feel more natural
It's the same reason I like the cut out on S21. It's a weird psychological thing. Even though the pixels above the cut out aren't useful it looks nicer to have the image wrap around it and makes the screen feel more immersive.
@@-ThatGuy- Absolutely! I agree. Exactly how I see it too
That and how it expands to show notifications and all that, just kinda makes sense, I work at a phone store and so far I’ve setup 5 of them, really nice phones, just gets me confused when I see the lack of physical sim
Yeah I didn't ever think Id like the cutout. I got the IPhone 11 pro from my job, and It was a really Nice phone, with a great Camera setup. Nice all around. My personal device was always a Galaxy Note though (I use my S pen for everything lol) and I had the 512gb Note 9 that I loved forever. It was a perfect phone for me. I resisted the upgrade to the 10 because the 9 was perfect. I FINALLY upgraded to the S22 ultra and the hole punch disappears when I use it because like you said, the image goes around it. I like it way better than the notch.
It's a gimmick that will become extinct in 5 years like their pathetic attempt of touch bar from Microsoft 🤣
I really like how much more balanced the energy is on the channel between you two . It kinda felt like an Austin Evans 2 channel at first but it's starting to feel more like it's more of a Matts thing now. Keep up the great work Matt, been loving how much more comfortable you are on camera than before.
I think Austin did that on purpose tho. Kinda. It's Matt's show but Austin is a Nut for control 🤣😝
You sound mad gay bro
It kinda seemed like it was somewhat intentional from Austin. He always seemed to cut matt off or talk over him.
It was always Matt's ......
@@-ThatGuy- I always get annoyed when Austin cuts him off lol. Let the guy talk!
please send help soon. Matt said if i keep trying to escape from the This Is basement he will strand me on the Dynamic Island with no music :(
no music???
@@AronFromThisIs the windows are up and the airconditioning isn't on :(
If Apple had the option to place USB C on the iphone or hold off on replacing the iphone port as long as possible to continue amassing royalties from third party manufactures from their lightning patent, I think they would choose the latter. Tim Cook's Apple, coming from a supply chain focus, is successful producing at scale and of course, a little more invested in any business opportunity that yields more profit.
i love hearing both of you talk. Keep me smiling.
To me that's the best description of why I don't like the Island. It being something you constantly interact with and is constantly changing form and drawing your attention makes it so you're always aware that it's there, while with the Notch, you just got used to that being how the phone looks and you forgot that it was there, not to mention watching full screen content, although not great with the notch, is MUCH better than with that huge pill + the no man's land of pixels next to it.
E-sim is probably the biggest gripe I'd have with this. It's hard to have a good experience with a phone carrier. If you never change sims it's fine, but if you do it's a hassle.
Now that I have a type c iPad I’d prefer a type c iPhone due to port limitations. Like using a wired controler or usb in and an hdmi out and charging? Not doable. Physically it’s limited. Type c can support more than 2 independent connections without issue. Lightning struggles.
Using the iPhone 14 pro myself, I truly cannot understand why they haven’t integrated all notifications through the dynamic island
13:20 ESIM for me, somebody who uses prepaid, was a tough move. I reached out to AT&T to have my current sim converted to an eSIM before I got the 14. I thought that everything would be smooth sailing after that, and that I could just transfer it over to my new phone at setup, but it still required another phone call to AT&T and another 30 minutes of waiting on the phone for them to do it manually. Was it the worst experience? No. Is it going to be annoying if I have to upgrade in the future?Yes.
I still don't know why we have a notch at all? Why don't we have cameras behind the screen that just turns off those pixels when the camera is in use? If we can have clear roll up screens this should not be so hard.
I’ve had a lot of phones, I had a iphone 4 then 5, then had android ( moto g4 pro, HUAWEI p20pro), then iPhone X and now i just got a 12 pro. On my experience buying the latest iPhones is never a good idea, cause a lot of my friends which do always have a lot of issues until half a year afterwards it’s release, also a port less iPhone would be a no go for me. Mag safe sucks. And data transfer thru lighting port sucks ass well 😂. I think they should go usb C. Better faster stronger. Simless iPhones would be a trouble for travelers.
Loved this video! You two make talking tech fun instead of just the same ol lame ol phone reviews. Thank you
Carriers started to add restrictions that only allow 2 sim swaps per year on e sims for free. More then that, you have to pay. Really pro consumer right there. There is a micro SIM size if you are so concerned about battery space.
Matt i do agree with your opinion most of the times but the headphone jack thing you said at 14:20 don't make sense to me removing the jack was completely a decision that was taken for making more money don't believe me just have a look at Zenfone 9 and if you have time do watch it's teardown you will get my point.
I’m also having focus issues.. I thought I was the only one, it’s pretty annoying. My iPhone XS never had this issue. This camera system its a little overwhelming. Seems like the main camera is forcing itself on macro or cinematic mode without using those features. They need to fix this with an update
My iPhone 12 Pro Max can never focus, and night shots are mostly terrible
One benefit of e-sim is phones that have upgradable storage won't have to use double-depth trays to accommodate both sim and memory card, and for those that _don't_ have upgradable storage they could potentially now add it by replacing the sim tray with a memory card tray/reader. If they don't mind not having that space freed up.
You were right about the UBC on the 15 lol
Keep it up awesome content :)
When it comes to the esim, I switch my phone out to my Samsung and or older iPhone depending on what I'm doing. I do travel between Canada and US often and depending on if my phone needs a clean before crossing, I'll pull the sim and put it in my other iphone\samsung. My Samsung does dual sim, so if traveling I have both in at the same time and don't need to worry about figuring out where to enter my esim information. A sim card has it's issues, but going purely digital has more cons than pros. Especially when it comes to locking down a phone, especially with some older phones I still use when I want to change it up. I'll throw a sim in and go. Why? Because I can. Apple may be a 'trend setter' of sorts, but I'm still not ok with no headphone jack and removing the sim, IMO, is stupid. We want more control over our phones, not giving them more control over our phones. As for the 14. I'll stick with my 13 pro max and still rocking my s10. The 14 is what matt said, an S, not a new gen. Very stupid of apple to call the 14 new.
The battery life gives me anxiety at 2:21
I’m kinda glad I waited to get my 14pm I’ve only had it for 3 weeks and Have not experienced any problems I loved my 13pm I had planned on keeping it till the 15 but I got a great deal on a trade in so I did it so far I like it overall a bit better especially the dynamic island I like it so much better than the notch and the aod is handy it’s just nice to have something that looks a bit different the 13 pm camera was fantastic but the 14 pm is just better as far as battery life it seems head to head
I live in small Europe country and considering every neighbouring country has it's own phone carrier with it's own charges I hope integrated sim cards won't become a norm.
i think dynamic island will be a feature to be seen for the next few years like austin said. i also think the next step in removing that will be screen integrated cameras and sensors, for a full screen display
Real question here : I currently have an iPhone 12 mini on location and the contract is ending in a few months (something like march 2023 I think). I was planning on getting this new 14 (pro) and keep it a bit longer that 2 years (duration of my contract). Maybe keep it until it die or become really crappy with perfs. Should I wait a few more months and get the 15 ? EDIT : I don't have a really pro usage of my phone : just regular net browsing, few video watching and lots of pictures of my dog.
The 15 won't be out in a few months, it will be out next year. If you aren't attached to apple you should look at the s22 ultra. Otherwise I'd wait for the 15 next year
@@CaptainCandycorn I’m keeping my 12 mini until the end of the contract around march 2023
I would go with the 13 since you'll be able to get basically the same phone as the regular 14 for $100 less (In the US, apologies if prices are different elsewhere) and you mentioned you don't really use your phone for 'pro things'. Unless you really want want the pro offers, then by all means go ahead! You should also be able to get the 13 pro for cheaper now, which might be something worth looking into as well. :)
Just wait. You have zero need to upgrade unless you direly want dynamic island which is a fugly feature and the camera is cool but if you are not more than a point and snap shot person then forget upgrading and keep your 12 mini.
i really wish any other manufacturer don't use esim. i have an extra sim just for emergency uses, like when i really late to pay bills or when certain places have better signal on my other sim. using esim means i don't have that options anymore. i am really not fond of having 2 devices when i can just carry a power bank.
Great Video!
Every time I see something like this I'm glad to have gone Android. I just don't want to deal with all of that bullshit.
Awesome job guys 👍
Been rocking a normal sim and esim simultaneously dual carriers on my z flip 3 for a year, that should've been the route to go for convenience
that's been the case for years on iphone and still is outside US
I don’t have a problem with no esim but put something in the plastic box or just keep it! How about add a Haptic Engine?
the only thing that's grinding my gears is that the removal of sim tray and also they should've made it type c only because overseas making apple turn lighting to type c that's going to make a huge problem
How can anyone get confused in thinking their phone is awake? Or is it a different set up in the UK? I can barely see the image with the always on. It’s gone 11pm and I’m at 51% battery heavy usage. My main concern is the MagSafe seems weaker compared to my 12.
Austin, we want to see your 2 month review of the flip 4!
You could almost do the same stuff the “ dynamic island” does with the iPhone 13’s notch
What i think is apple will try and make dynamic island perfect for the next few years but other companies are already trying for a under display camera
It’s my first iPhone coming from a galaxy note 10+ personally I love it but my girl got a 13 pro max and there isn’t much of a difference so as a longtime Apple user don’t recommend but as Aswitch from galaxy I say totally
Still on the iPhone 11 Pro Max and it’s absolutely perfect for me!
How do you charge when you are traveling? How do you charge while using the phone for Navigation? How do you charge phones in the airport? Carry Pan Cake charger dongles?
I have iPhone 7 looking for a new iPhone, I had my sight on 14 pro but I decided to get normal 13 refurbished and wait for 15/16 pro.
I’m on a 6s right now and just ordered the 14 pro, I hope it doesn’t suck like your title says.
I made the same move last weekend. You'll be surprised how heavy it is, but you get used to it pretty fast. It's weird getting used to the new navigation too, but once you do it's pretty nice to use. Overall I'm happy with mine. 6S was an amazing device for a long time, but I'm glad I finally upgraded. I wonder if this one will have the same longevity.
@@Crushenator500 Yeah the 6 lasted me many years, so the 14 should be the only phone I need for a very long time.
I've been using a 6s for 6 years too and I‘ll order a 14 pro as soon as it launches in my country. I‘ll probably have to look up a lot how to use the phone, because phones have developed tremendously since the age of 6s and I literally don‘t know how to operate the current ui. I also plan to use the new phone as long as possible
i do not used a sim since i think 2020. my main sim is a e sim so for me no problem i live my life between romania and italy and i do not have a problem using just e sim on my iphone se 2020 and iphone 13
Removing the SIM is a big hack, back home in South Africa carriers charge roughly 2 dollars every month for the priviledge of using an esim device - there's literally no reason other than "you have no choice but to constantly subscribe to us or your device won't work" Maybe someone can come up with a device that relays carrier networks to your phone and can you can add physical Sims to that device, I'm already carrying a power bank, why not integrate that kinda functionality into it as well? Would also be super helpful as a person who travels to be able to keep all my different country Sims in one device and easily switch between carriers with the tap of a button (which is the dream of esim but the current implementation is greedy and trash)
What's the deal with all the critic of the eSIM and the need for a SIM-tray due to international travel? Does US Telecom carriers not have mobile plans that lets you use it internationally? I can travel all around the world and have mobile service with the subscription i have. And just for the record, eSIM is not "something that only works in the US". Almost all big carriers here in Europe offers eSIM and has done for several years.
These guy said that the dynamic notch looks good. Strange there’s no notch in the middle of the phone that gets bigger looks good.
You guys should actually do a pizza party episode where you try pizza and talk about pizza related tech
I use airdrop to transfer files from my phone to my Mac and if I need to I use hotspot from my phone to do so.
Upgraded from the 11 Pro to the 14 Pro, and for that jump I’m pretty happy!
You should be.
On the E-Sim…I couldn’t care less. Other than when upgrading phones, something the E-Sim can just transfer to, I don’t think I opened my sim tray once in the last 5 years, and longer if it weren’t for the sim reader in my old 6 burning out. That can’t happen any more, so good change for longevity too.
How's the battery ???
I kinda agree, dynamic island is a gimmick like Siri was at launch. Watching landscape video takes more space than the notch ever did. Transfer speeds are still abysmal at USB 2.0 speeds which makes shooting at full 48mp garbage and useless to transfer.
The island is a copy of LG v10 dynamic bar Yeats ago and samsungs edge bar or side bar.
If the iPhone 14 Pro with always on display gets me to at least 10% before going to bed, I’m going to use it. My current iPhone 12 Pro is at 10% by 4pm so anything better than that is a win.
Buddy my iPhone 13 Pro Max is at 50 percent at 10 pm and I can use it the next day til I get into bed again. Lol just sayin
@@KP-05 Well obv 13 pro max battery is huge
@@uhhTabby lol not really..only 29 mAh less than the 13 pro max
@@KP-05 what...
Not having a sim card slot is ridiculous. So you are okay with Service providers having power over you?
The thing is that every single reviewer views this as a 13 to 14 upgrade and it’s not meant for that. It’s much better for people like me who were on 11-12 and wanted to upgrade. And it is an awesome upgrade with that said.
The battery is worse on the 14’s than all the 13’s
@@andrewmg121 don’t really care because I’m not talking about the 13’s
True but I wish I can wait just one more year tbh....
@@andrewmg121 that’s actually a lie I have a 14 pro max and the battery is better than the 13s
@@zaire2346 do you also have a 13 pro max to compare it to with the exact thing you did with your 14 pro max?
iOS 16 is having battery issues all around. It’s hard to judge the phone battery until that’s resolved
The dynamic island becomes part of the screen so its a full screen iphone now!
Well I like to use multiple phones. Not all at once but I like the freedom of popping in my sim card to a different phone on the fly. Some days I use my iphones and some days I use my android phones. I don't like the idea of esim.
Great content. It seems like apple is trying very hard to be like samsung, with it's always on display. Lock screen. But no matter how hard they try. They'll never be able to customize there phone's to make it your's, not what there willing to (let) you have. Good lock is a game changer.
I have an s22 ultra and have always had samsung but I do actually like where apples going. It seems like they're customization is starting to get better. And as small as the change with the hole punch and dynamic island makes the phone look and probably feel a lot better.
@@joeyp1212 i still prefer punch hole way better tbh
I miss the tick-tock upgrade cycle like 4 to 4s.. 5 to 5s.. etc..
Periscope camera instead of the sim tray? 🤔🤔🤔
They’re jus good to look at. Speaking as someone who has the iPhone 14 pro max
the z flip 4 has a silhouette of a crease in the middle so different enough to any other phone.
Why cant they use transparent to get rid of the hole punch and notch and only have them show up when inn use
so for myself I'm upgrading from the iPhone 11 non Pro to a 14 Pro and it's gonna be a big bump in power, resolution and camera. Those for me are worthwhile upgrades. I don't see it being worthwhile if you have a 12 Pro or especially as 13 Pro but I don't see much benefit in upgrading a phone every single year. You get minimalist gains vs if you wait 2-3years before upgrading and given the price difference between the 13 Pro and 14 Pro is $100 I might as well get the newest tech available and hope it lasts longer not to mention if I was to get the 13 Pro why wouldn't I instead save $100 on top of that and simply get the regular 14 since it's the same chip and everything. I don't see much of an argument for those upgrading from older gens to get the previous years model instead of just getting the newest. If the price difference was greater I would definitely give it more thought but there isn't a lot of incentive to get last years model right now imo.
The 13 pro still has 120hz and the regular 14 doesn’t and it has a triple camera setup while the 14 only has a dual camera. Also there’s no 1tb model or pro raw photos on the regular 14. So either get the 14 pro or save and get the 13 pro or wait for the 15 pro so you get usb c also and even better battery life
@@darkhaven9119 i literally said i got the 14 pro
Still using my 12 Pro Max, and don't look at upgrading anytime soon...
9:51 Damn why you gotta do the homie like that
Ik my friend has some weird green lines on the sides of his photos on the 13mini. Idk why since its brand new.
Honestly, if apple opted out for USB C, than that’s just one less accessory they would have to manufacture. Than again, they gave the mantle for adapters to Anker; but they still make adapters… so… idk
Removing the SIM tray makes space for a periscope lens.
Was that amelia wattson on the wallpaper or am i trippin?!
@12:01 I don't think Matt is wrong on that one. I bet the production splits and the usb-c iPhone is EU spec and the North America model goes port less (because we aren't regulating that)
Every time Austin says "for me" my head instantly fills in the rest with "... I really like corn"
I bought a 13 pro max 3 weeks ago specifically because i knew price increases incoming. I dont game on my phone so dont really care about this, also they didnt have the colour i wanted (sierra blue)
My issue is buying a Factory Unlocked iPhone 14 Pro Max USA Model is not having a Sim Card Slot
I went from a 12 to the 14 pro max and I’m loving it. Do I think there are places it could be better, yes, but I’ve been cramped in many ways with the 12 for a a couple years. I only had 64GB of storage, which was limited, the battery life was disappointing, and I just kept on having really random issues with the device overheating, the phone saying there was liquid in my charging port when it was nowhere near liquid, it just became a hassle, so having a new phone that remedies these issues feels nice, and the battery had been phenomenal for me so far. I have very long days, and being able to get through them on a full charge without using low power mode has been really nice
Omg damn it why Matt? Damn jack is needed I need to plug mic, headphones and such and Id need an expensive cable, making quality worse
I was waiting for Austin Evans to say ring a ling the ding a Ling bell and he forgot lol 😆 😂
After this new update my HomePod minis are playing up its driving me nuts
I haven't had a single issue with focus? I've taken maybe 500 photos and i don't think it's missed focus once haha
I'm not in the US and currently only use eSim in my Pixel 6 Pro...
My phone is mostly for content consumption, and I don't think a dedicated pill on my screen all the time is waay more annoying than having to swipe down to see my timer( that I use maybe once every three weeks... I only hear Spotify while walking so I would use the player on the lock screen anyway.. not useful to me at all, I prefer the 14 plus.. but I want the better camera. OMG Apple you always make things so frustrating...
I love how I got an iPhone 14 Pro ad before this video. Very fitting. 👌
Battery life sot???
I recall Tech TikTok account pointing out that if Apple can do esim only in US then what's stopping them from doing USB-C only in the EU and lightning everywhere else. I'm thinking the implications of designing two different PCBs or whatever they need to do would make it not worth it.
3:50 maybe that will be the reason for dynamic island to not MacBook in the future maybe? Notch is hiding inside of the menu bar right now so, hmm.
My battery on 14pro I immediately turned off always on bc even just first day use it was draining Days later, battery life improved but was still lacking compared to my 11promax Decided to turn off the battery percentage indicator and for some reason that helped it so much I use my phone for hours at a time whether it be reading, watching yt or scrolling TikTok It lasts all day but I usually have to charge it every night Right now the biggest drainer seems to be having full brightness
But that’s my one gripe I have my phone on full brightness but I notice my phone choosing to dim itself depending on what app I’m on , and changing as it pleases It’s quite annoying
It's almost end of the day for me now, 55% on my iPhone 13 with 91% battery life. I see no reason to upgrade to 14 😁
Honestly I (a US resident) couldn’t care less about the esim. It’s kinda nice to know that my SIM card can’t easily be popped out.
We already had media controls in the control center 🤷♂️
10:38 Why are you comparing the camera of the Iphone 14 Pro Max to the Samsung Note 20 ? a fairer comparison would be the s22 ULTRA
You should review the new TMobile revvle 6 pro 5g
I haven't had any issues with always on and battery life and I'm personally loving my 14 Pro Max. Now the regular 14, not much of an upgrade
Probably the dynamic island takes quite some battery as well
Shaks🤣 Love this.
I got rid of my 13 pro max and got the 14 pro max because I like to upgrade each year because I have that mental problem with new phones but I wish I would have kept my 13 this year
I’m keeping my gold 13 pro max forever 🥺
6:42 Anyone know where I can find that wallapaer? Looks pretty sick!
I have an 11 and might just upgrade to the 13 at the cheaper price. don't really see a reason for the 14 right now.
I just upgraded from iPhone 11 Pro to iPhone 14 Pro, and it feels WRONGGG 😭
Great comment that using the phone the notch disappears very quicky whereas the DI rubs it's obtrusiveness at you all the time.
Looking forward to the *Samsung ads* about having a *SIM card slot* 🤣
BOSS Rainbow Mountain, I think, is the best Japanese canned coffee. I have tried a lot of them and this is the best. No horrible after taste.
If they have removed the sim trey, then they’ve unlocked so many possibilities with additional stuff inside phones. Think about it, they finally have space for a headphone jack… think about it
Yea but how could they sell you their AirPods if they bring that back? Not happening
headphone jacks are just dead in general. Such a dead horse.
You know that they fill that gap by putting a plastic block right? a literal "Plastic squared block"
@@SaltyPenguin255 you are dumb if you think that's the case
Not sure what everyone’s obsession is with an always on display. I just turned it off, it’s not something I need, I can look at my Watch to see the time, I don’t need to glance down at my phone.
