Eaten Alive by Giant Tarpon!

2022 ж. 9 Қыр.
2 252 584 Рет қаралды

To demonstrate the incredible power of Tarpon, and the respect and protections they warrant, Coyote and Christina conducted a bare-handed feeding! Tarpon fishery in Florida is highly regulated, with only catch and release practices. Always consult and obey the regulations.
Remember: do NOT try this at home!
Big thanks to Robbies and their incredible staff for hosting the BW crew and providing us with this unique up-close experience with tarpon! If you get the chance to visit remember to follow Coyote's advice - hold your bait fish by the tail so you can avoid a full chomp.

Even though I was holding the bait fish by the tail like you're supposed to, one of the tarpons lunged so far out of the water it still managed to get almost my whole forearm in its mouth. It all happened so fast I barely even realized what happened. Luckily I made it out with just a pretty big scrape down my arm, but in the moment it felt like it was going to pull my whole arm off. It's an honor though to be able to say I've been bitten by what could possibly be the same exact fish that bit Coyote.

    @Arun_Baliga@Arun_Baliga Жыл бұрын
    • Dude, the *vast majority* of zoos take the best care of their animals that they can. They are research centers, studying animals so we can take even *better* care of them both in captivity and in the wild. They are rescue centers, taking in sick and injured animals so they can be nursed back to health. They are learning centers where people can come to see animals they probably never would otherwise and not only learn about them but come to *care* about them as much as the amazing people who work with them every day. Nowhere else can you be only the thickness of a plexiglass window away from a massive gorilla picking it's nose like you don't even exist. Nowhere else can you walk through a midnight forest full of bats without once having to worry about bites or any of the *other* things that can be in a forest at night. Nowhere else can you not only get close enough to feed certain animals, but actually be *encouraged* to do so with treats specifically formulated for that animal's needs! Coyote Peterson is amazing, yes. Steve Irwin was *also* amazing and *he* ran a *zoo.* I've continued to visit zoos as an adult and actually *talk* to the people who work there and *pay attention* to the animals. They are *amazing* places.

      @brigidtheirish@brigidtheirish Жыл бұрын
    • I can 100% see the validity of both these comments here. My current viewpoint is that as of right now today, the zoo - and I’m talking about a modern zoological park which is steeped in animal care, research, release, education, you name it - are necessary things. I don’t think it will always be that way or should be, but today I say yes.

    • @@brigidtheirish Maybe in the US or whatever country you are from, however I talked only about my personal experiences. My local zoo here in Thailand is run down is going to shut down at any moment. The exhibits aren't well cleaned, there are barely any staff and the all the animals just sit there in a tiny concrete chamber for the rest of their lives. Again, this is all from personal experience and I won't speak on the behalf of the rest of the world.

  • I’ve been to this place a few times, and feeding the Taropon is a very very intimidating task, def a rush as they just explode out of the water when you least expect it

  • Florida resident here, Tarpon are insanely cool and I’ve been to Robbie’s several times to hand feed them. Tarpon will fight for hours and hours and you often have to “swim them” for about 15 minutes so they get all the lactic acid out of their muscles and so they can swim off. Very, very cool fish

  • Coyote you should checkout the red tail catfish , arapaima, or silver arowana . They get massive and some can be bigger than you.

    @einstein3185@einstein3185 Жыл бұрын
    • A tarpon is far larger than myself at a max of 280 lbs lol I'm only 110lb as a 5'10" 21 year old male, surely you don't mean they get larger than that? I mean I don't know how to swim so I don't really care either way just curious the extent to which common fish besides tuna, sharks, larger cephalopods, etc can grow

    • @@SwampyColorado420 sure! You have to have a permit to catch 1 per year if you are aiming for a world/state record. If you do catch one otherwise you have to release them and you cannot bring them out of the water at all. There are more rules about it you can look up :)

    • In Florida, the commercial sale of tarpon is prohibited. Recreationally, the tarpon provides a huge industry for charter captains. In the Florida Keys, many of these guides make the bulk of their earnings from April through June, the prime months for tarpon migrations. Recreational anglers must obtain a tarpon tag (purchased prior to catching) in order to possess a tarpon. However, most tarpon guides and anglers esteem the tarpon and nearly always release the fish unharmed.
