  • 3:35 Grissom was actually called Bunker Hill Naval Station before it became Grissom Air Force Base in 1968. It was named after astronaut Virgil "Gus" Grissom, an Indiana native, who perished during a fire in the Apollo capsule at Cape Kennedy, FL, in 1967. It is now called Grissom Air Force Reserve Base, which hosts the 434th Air Refueling Wing, and it continues its mission of air refueling operations. It is home to the largest KC-135R Stratotanker wing in the Air Force Reserve Command. My dad finished out the last few years of his 20 year career as a crew chief mechanic for the Air Force at this base.

  • 1952 we visited Chicago to see my uncle off to the Korean Conflict. I still have a very vivid picture in my mind of the beautiful TWA Connie. At 5-years old and everything being so different - walked to the plane - that Connie appeared to be only a couple hundred feet from me. Gawd! What a beautiful aircraft that was.

  • Grew up not too far from Midway, as good Catholic boys my brother and I would ditch church on Sundays and grab some White Castles and hang out watching planes in a lot they used to have on the SE corner of the airport. Got to land there once when I was working on my private with my instructor in a 172, that was pretty cool!

  • fun fact. That final follows archer avenue all the way in and goes right above my old apartment. I used to really enjoy roof sitting during the summer and watch that big bank you did and watch all the birds fly right over head. Really awesome to see that perspective from the air. Makes me miss home even more. Thanks for sharing!

    • My Dad used to work for Montgomery Wards, and took the corporate aircraft all the time. He wanted to fly fighters but his eyesight wasn't at minimums and that meant no WWII ace in the family (yeah, right...). So in corporate life, he befriended the pilots. Wards owned two planes - a Grumman Turbo Prop and one of the first jets (GII, I think, at the time). His pilot buddy said of the Turbo Prop that it climbed and handled like a fighter. They were based out of KORD (O' Hare - Butch's field), at Butler Aviation. I used to take him there all the time when he was traveling. Memories...

  • Absolutely one of your best, Steveo! Been there-into Meigs, co-pilot seat, De Havilland Dove, clear cold winter night ,round trip out of EVV to pick up and return the owner. Chicago and its Great White Way was lit up like Disneyland as far as we could see both north and south of our approach. It’s an awesome night flight experience. You’ll need to try it and make the video into Midway, better yet even into PWK (approach closer to the loop) one of my prime SIM destinations and early build in X-Plane.
