Craig Jones - BJJ superstar - defends his Polaris Pro Middleweight Title against top challenger Matheus Lutes.
Lutes is a IBJJF champion and a KASAI Elite Challenge winner, while Jones is one of the most decorated BJJ competitors in the world. This was a championship 15mins match and took place May 25, 2019.

  • I don't think Matheus is fooling anyone, he's clearly stalling the entire time because he doesn't think he's the same caliber grappler as Craig, and he'd be right.

    • I didn't see much stalling. Matheus was mostly pushing forward, engaging with limbs. His pass and sub from top attempts were non-committal for sure, but I don't think you say he wasn't engaging.

  • I always find it very weird to see such good grapplers having such a hard time to het someone to the ground. Put a High level wrestler or judoka in there and they take them down easy. So why not just pull guard, we wanna see some grappling.

    • They scored the fight 3 five minute rounds. Craig lost the first, won the second due to close heel hook finish, and the 3rd he was never put into a threat by Lutes as Lutes never aggressively attempted to pass or go for anything. The third round was close but point given to Craig since he went for another leg entanglement. So 2-1 on points, but only because Lutes just didn't do enough in that last 5 minutes.

  • 20 minutes of screwing around in the guard and not ever advancing is why this will never grow a mainstream fan base. At least under the current rule set. Most people are not going to pay big bucks to see this crap, you can watch it for free every day in your local BJJ gym.

  • This guard pulls are absolutely useless. Bjj ruleset should be more oriented towards mma not just sport bjj. Instead of improving wrestling skills we have stupid Z guard and lasso guard, spider guard and other useless shit. Thats why bjj is becoming less and less prominent in mma.
