In this video I repair the jog dial on a Razer Blackwidow Elite keyboard. This is a known issue with these keyboards and giving the jog dial a thorough cleaning with some contact cleaner should take care of the issue these things have with the lack of smooth operation.

  • Dude, you are life saver! This worked great...This thing has been driving me crazy for months! It started out like yours, where it just wasn't accurate when you turned the dial but then it started randomly going to full volume all by itself! I play music through my PC when I sleep and it's nice not being scared half to death in the middle of the night when it decides to turn itself up to 100%!

    • Glad i could help you out! Just an FYI, the fix relapses and it'll go back to it's old jenky ways. This is a manufacturer's defect that is well known. Guess we just have to rip apart our keyboards every year and do maintenance! 🥳 Thanks for watching!

    • @@ashleylloyd9239 This is an option! However, spraying it from only the top side of the dial doesn't offer as thorough of a cleaning as taking it all apart and spraying from the underside as well. While doing it the quick way is still a fix, you'll probably end up spraying it more frequently. Thanks for watching!

  • Same here, made a video a month before yours outlining the same procedure. Just never thought of using contact cleaner, I took the whole thing apart further and used isopropyl alcohol and an ear swab

    • Alcohol works fine. Some will say that alcohol could deteriorate carbon tracks and that contact cleaner is the safest best. The benefit of some contact cleaners is they have a lubricant which helps keep things in near new conditions. Thanks for watching!

  • You're a legend, thank you. I took the job wheel apart and sprayed it once, put the whole thing back together, and it still didn't work. I re-watched the vid and realized you had absolutely drenched the thing, so I was more liberal with the contact cleaner the second time and huzzah, it works! Huge help, thank you so much!

  • I found this keyboard at a Thrift Store for about $5. It's a mess, but all buttons appear to work properly. I just need to clean it all down. If I opened it up, how would I go about cleaning under the buttons, and the music buttons to the left of the dial? The Play button is questionable. It appears to either be stuck, or no longer click. I guess I will have to just see under the hood. How should I clean these parts? Is a contact cleaner acceptable? Any specific brand worth using? Thanks in advance.

    • I use MG Chemicals Contact Cleaner with Lubricant (search for it on Amazon). I believe the buttons to the left of the dial are all mini tactical buttons... spraying cleaner on them and pressing them a few times is a good way to work the cleaner in to do its job. Short of that, if you can solder replacing the buttons is also possible. I'll make a video shortly about choosing components. Good topic! Thanks for watching.

  • Hello, my friend. I would like to ask if it's safe to clean and lubricate this with WD-40. What is your opinion on that? Thank you for your time and your answer.

    • Proper electronics contact cleaner is the best way go about cleaning this. Personally I don't use WD-40 to clean dials / switches. It's not the right tool for the job. Thanks for watching!

    • Hmmm, could be a solder joint or the actual button failed, or, it just may need a really in depth cleaning.

  • I did the same but without taking everything apart, just gently spry it from the outside side in, and move the wheel. It needs to be cleaned and then lubed with wd40 or similar. it gets fixed 100%

    • That's not really a fix. It's a temporary solution because all you're doing is displacing the dirt that's not making it function properly so that when it gets dirty again it'll be twice as bad. 🤷🏻‍♂️ You do you. I'll do it the right way.

  • I had already did a replacement under warranty for this issue with Razer. My Huntsman Elite is doing it yet again but this time is worse than ever. This really is a shit design on their part for an otherwise great keyboard that's on the expensive side.

    • Very true statement. Sometimes I hear stories about Razer stuff that really makes the company look bad, other times they get praise. Besides this I've never had a problem with my Razer equipment, and I have a lot! I'm pretty much on the fence if I'd buy Razer again when I upgrade down the road. We'll see what happens! Thanks for watching!

  • wow 32 screws. OR.... you can just do like me and take a flathead and pry the damn knob out along with the ribbon cable. problem solved. What a shitty keyboard. Elite my ass. Never again getting one of these. Also have a regular blackwidow and it SO MUCH easier to clean or take apart.

    • I mean... there's always an "easier" way to disassemble things (brute force being one of them, lol). I find it's a mix of people saying their (Razer) stuff is junk and others love them. For me, I like their stuff but there are flaws. Mainly with repairability. Any company that doesn't allow you to buy individual parts for repair purposes loses points with me. I've had to repurchase my mouse and keypad because of a bad usb hub fried them. I found the chip that fried in the two Razer units but I couldn't order them... and I don't like mixing and matching brands so I just bought Razer again and ditched the cheap usb hub. Thanks for watching!
