Hey do you still sale your old keycaps before the hippo ones
I'm just gonna say it. What's up with all you custom keyboard ppl who don't use the whole keyboard? I use all the keys. I like cool things too. I'm with Stephan. Those aren't even real keyboards.
link to the shinny blue key thingy?
U should do the Gamakay tk68
Keychron boards have very high latency, and are not suitable for any sort of competitive gaming.
Steven is so real for wanting a numpad. I get you can get detached ones, but then they're lower quality than your main keyboard, etc etc so it's nice to see some 100% love
i know right i need that numpad a lot also is just cause im use to it since i was a kid ( 90s kid here)
The central numbers are okay for small numbers, but for large numbers or doing calculations, the numpad is 10x better.
@@morgan5941 Most of the people who don't use them never use their computers for serious productivity stuff. I couldn't dream of using excel without a numpad, and I use excel for so much.
Data engineer here It makes me so sad how hard it is to find full-size or a satellite numpad that won’t feel like poop compared to a nice custom board. Need both the pad and home cluster for my workflow. (And because I use them all day for work, I habitually prefer the numpad over the number row on my personal board too) Q0 is tempting to let me pick any nice tkl for pairing, but at that point, might as well just get a q6 and mod it.
@@ZarBluestari felt the same so I ended up using the geon frog tkl + frog pad since they look really cohesive together. Only con is much higher price point and no matching colors so I had to custom cerakote, but my frog pad sounds/feels amazing and almost identical to my keyboard, especially after minor modding.
3:10 as a finance bro who dabbles in coding, i have never understood the absence of num pads. They're so dang useful.
what you are saying does not match your profile picture at all
I worked in insurance for a couple years and it ruined me. Num pads are a requirement.
I cannot live without them, and I'm not a finance bro. I worked an inventory job 20 years ago where we had these 10 key belt hung computer units, and had to enter numbers as fast as you could think them. I got really good, and now it's a requirement for me. Only once did I screw that up with a 10 key-less laptop in college back in 2007. I ended up having to buy a USB acessory one. Never made that mistake again. It's literally the reason I have a Precision 7680 and not a Precision 5680, which would have done the job ok. I'm happier with twice as much RAM and an i9 anyway, but dead serious, no 10 key was what killed the cheaper model on arrival.
I am torn because I use my numpad but think the 65 and 75 are far more aesthetic. I am pretty sure when I pull the plug I’m going to do a 75 and buy a separate numpad.
nah i have a keyboard without a numpad but it still has arrow keys and controls above and it's sooooo much better without the numpad but I also don't do finance stuff and am capable of using the literal line of numbers at the top of the keyboard.
Nice to see some full-size keyboard love! Definitely want the Q6 as my first build.
Go with the Monsgeek M5!instead. Better aluminium quality and sounding. You won't need QMK/Via on a full size board
Q1 Pro with the Q0 Plus is a pretty nice 'best of both worlds' setups. It won't be taking out my KBDFans Odin v1 anytime soon but I needed a keyboard to travel for work and (modded) it's a phenomenal choice.
@@ThatBassistKendall Nice! I mostly want a full-size keyboard cause the numpad is a great macro-board for OBS and editing software cause, I am a content creator so it'll be very handy for me.
There's also the Q12 if you want the numpad on the left
I play war thunder, so it's basically a requirement.
Steven wants a 10 key because Steven wants to be a responsible adult and productive member of society. I applaud Steven for his wise choice.
I legit contacted Keychron support when I bought my Q6, because I thought the tools were missing from the box. It is incredibly gratifying to know I am not the only Very Smart Person to make this mistake!
I did the same lmao! I felt so stupid…
Same! I contacted them and they asked if I took everything out of the box. I said yes of course I did, there's nothing there! I had no idea that it was basically a false bottom in the box.
@@Kenshin11212 I did this when I bought my car and I'd paid £200 for extra crap like a first aid kit and breakdown kit and cleaning products and things. I got the car and that whole pack was tiny. like 7x5x2 inches. It had the first aid kit logo on it and I thought it was just a first aid kit. I went in the dealership and complained that the rest wasn't there, and they got out one of the little packs and opened it up and took all the stuff out which wasn't a first aid kit and gave it to me and I just stood there too embarrassed to say anything and took it and walked back to my car. One of the salesmen came out to my car just as I was reversing out and asked me if I had done exactly what I had done, and I just said 'no' and drove off because 1. it was too embarrassing. I just paid you £20k. I know what I've done, you know what I've done; just let me go, don't shame me for it. And 2. they really ripped me off for that £200 kit with about £20 of stuff in it. They added it without discussing it with me when selling me the car and it was one of the 6 pages I signed in a row, not realising I was buying it, so F them.
I'm only at 3:48 into this video, but I am SO GRATEFUL to hear about the need for a 100% layout. I need the numb pad because so much of my work involves numbers. I'm on the edge of my seat and can't wait to see how this turns out.
Yeah I don't see how 75% is so popular since they are missing all of the F-Keys. I use a few of them way too often. I've seen a few 96%s that are really interesting, though.
@@randomness32810 96% i can get behind, but 75 or 60% are just useless to me. i wouldnt mind a smidge smaller, but F the nonsense of going without a numpad. i dont even use it for work, paying bills, doing taxes, all that crap is just so much easier with a numpad.
@@randomness32810 75% has F-keys, it's anything smaller than that that doesn't have F-keys. 75% is the 81 key.
I'm with Stephen! I use the numpad all the time and it's crazy to me how people seem to love not having one!
epomaker has a solid gasket mounted Seperated one now for 40 USD you should check out :D. i hope it suits your needs if you wana check out other layouts
“It’s not even a real keyboard” bro offended the whole 40% community 💀
I really have no Problem with that. Why do they even exist (the Keyboards, Not the people)
40% of nothing is still nothing
never even knew 40% keyboards existed until just now
angry 40% noises (they cant even type half this message) 1234567890
Honestly curious what do people mainly use 40% for? Gaming I use the numbers for a lot of actions. Games like osu you only use few keys so that’s an option I guess until the wooting uwu. Typing if you never use numbers but I just don’t see the desk space saved justifying that bare minimum but lot of things in life aren’t practical its about being different
As someone working in finance, not having a numpad is a total dealbreaker, it’s almost as bad as not using a real mouse and just sticking with a laptop trackpad 🤦♂️
Same. I don’t understand how people can live without it! I’ve never worked in finance, but I used to field calls for a doctor’s office for several years, and typing in someone’s birthday when they say it super fast is impossible without the numpad. If you just use the row of numbers at the top, the / key is on the other side of the keyboard. But with the numpad, it’s just right there and you can type 01/01/2000 for example, so much faster than on a keyboard without a numpad. Numpads are fantastic and I don’t understand why people don’t like them!
The other week, I finally bought my first custom keyboard. I used your old guide saying the V series was a solid first one. (I didn't have the money for the Q or I probably would have gotten it) And everything's been put together, and the difference between my old Corsair and this is night and say. It sounds and feels so much better. People like you also taught me to try out non-cherry switches and I learned the reason I liked Blues wasn't the clickyness, but the weight. And now I have a lovely weighty tactile that I'm typing on. Not sure I'm into thocc, I like Clack a bit more, but still, people like you helped it out, and it wasn't that painful. Pretty easy and fun. (If I ever find out they're doing another run of the Zoom TKL tho I may go for that as a fun side board)
LOVE the energy Stephen brings to this!! Also so glad seeing that random community post suggestion (iirc?) about Kilmat pan out SO great for you both.
THANK YOU STEPHEN, NUMPAD ENJOYERS RISE UP
This video was genuinely so helpful as someone who has an OG Razer Ornata, that has been going strong but starting to show some wear and tear from continuous gaming and writing, I'm wanting to build my first custom keyboard (and not break the bank) so this video was really helpful.
Hipyo really does have the best vibes on KZhead, man. You just know he's fun and chill to hang out with IRL
I dunno seems like there's some sus shenanigans energy going on there in all the videos with his friends and I'm all for it.
Nah bro Hipyo's idea of fun is lubing switches and building a keyboard from scratch. That's a recipe to send any sane person into a nut house.
Hey there! As a fellow tech enthusiast, I can vouch for the benefits of the HOTO Compressed Air Capsule. It's a handy tool for keeping your desktop and other spaces clean. With its powerful vacuuming and blowing capabilities, along with its compact size and versatile accessories, it's definitely worth considering for your cleaning routine. Plus, it's reasonably priced compared to other brands. Cheers! 🖥🔧
I absolutely love the Q series, great board. And I like to see a clean and good full-size board as well :D And the guide, of course, is great!
I have this exact keyboard and I've wanted to mod it to this level. Awesome video and this has made me much more confident to do this!
your channel inspired me to build my own keyboard! im waiting on some of the things to come in but so far i love it, thank you for getting me into the hobby!!! i can 100% say it was fun :D
Im with you Stephen. I need all of the buttons. I bought a K95 back when they had both numpad and 18 G-keys. And yes, I use them. I program them for all the different games I play and color code them. Never a single regret. In fact, I bought two boards. One with Reds, and one with Browns. Part of my command station, surrounded by electronic real estate... and numpads.
That was my first mechanical keyboard, too! And then they started getting rid of all the macro keys. Wtf?! Those keys were so damn useful!
I love when Hipyo makes unsuspecting victims build keyboards
thanks for the video! me and my husband are going to follow this to the T for our first build lol Your videos are great!!! :)
Tip about keycaps: if you have a numpad, make sure the numpad caps are included with the keycap set. If not, make sure to order the additional kit for numpad keys.
Hey {{3}}! Thanks for your comment. I completely agree with you. Numpad caps are often overlooked when it comes to keycap sets. It's definitely worth double-checking if they're included or considering ordering the additional kit. By the way, have you ever heard of the HOTO Compressed Air Capsule? It's an amazing tool for keeping your desk clean and maintaining your hardware. Worth checking out! 🖥🔧
One of the best videos around this subject. Not too nerdy, keeps attention till the end and is kinda funny as well. Keep with a good work guys😊
Just bought the same keyboard and did the same mods. I have cherry red switches. It sounds amazing. Ironically, I was also using an old Razer blackwidow and so the upgrade is incredible. Thank you, Hipyo!!!!
Btw killmat is meant to be rolled flat, it performs much better when rolled flat rather than having the bumps on it. Keep up the great videos👍
What does 'rolled flat' mean?
@@Shaderone77 killmat comes with a roller and you're supposed to use the roller to make the mat flat rather than leaving it bumpy
the "bumpiness" is the air pockets that provide the noise insulation. The roller is probably used to make sure it adheres to curved surfaces better.
Aww, Stephen is so adorable, look at how excited he looked to try out all the keyboards! Tbf, this would be me too
I'm picky and gave up finding a perfect keyboard for me a while ago.. But after watching this video I'm convinced that I just need to view my options for building one for myself! :D Cheers!
I got my Q1 Pro today and did the brakeforce mod. I like how it sounds after the mod. The next mod i will try is the Killmat but without the other foam. I really like the gasketmounting but i also want a bit more pop and hope everything will fit :D
I literally just bought a Keychron Qš with a knob - loving it
It's got to be full size, all the way! I built my first keyboard last year and went with a the (fully functional) LTC NB1041 Nimbleback Wired Mechanical Keyboard for $75. Then I upgraded to Gateron Ink v2 Black pre-lubed 5pin linear switches (60g Force), added some thick o-rings for extra THOCKINESS and noise dampening, then topped it all off with PBT (instead of cheap ABS) XDA Profile Keycaps in a lovely set of colors that matched my PC setup. I did it all for about $170 and I love every minute of my time with this board! Edit: the o-rings went on the keycap stems, not the switches. And I also bought a switch tester and a couple sample packs of switches first to get what I wanted after trying them out.
I was on the fence about getting this exact keyboard and now im convinced.
96% gang, I went with the Q5 because it still has a num pad (which I use daily) but gets rid of some of the navigation keys that I never use, perfect size IMO
Picked up a Keychron Q2 with Gateron Red Pro's a few weeks ago as an upgrade from my Ducky Mecha Mini on Cherry MX Browns, wasn't expecting a big difference, but I was absolutely blown away by the Keychron. Its a THOC machine, the linears are far better than the browns and the isolation is fantastic. I'm finding any excuse I can to type, its soooooo nice. Especially when I swapped over my custom double shot PBT key set from my old Ducky, which only added to the THOC by removing some of the higher pitched click from the stock Keychron set.
Recently bought a q1 with gateron oil kings and kfa pbt white on navy keycaps, i will never go back to a gaming board ty hipyo for opening my eyes to this amazing hobby, despite it leaving me penniless.
New to the channel. Really enjoyed this video! Loved that the 100% layout was a must-have, as I was starting to think I was crazy :')
Saving this one for later. I just bought me a Q5 to start dipping my toes into modding~
Recently for a V6 and this video inspired me to mod it. You might be interested to know they have changed things up a little on the v6 since the version you used in the video. They now include a moulded piece of silicon and there are standoffs in the mid section of the case which the PCB screws onto. Ended up needing to leave the silicon mould out in order to fit the kill mat. Results where so good following your advice on mods for it 😍. One thing that bums me out still tho is that the keys in different parts of the keyboard sound so different 🤔. Any ideas how to fix that?
The keyboard on the video it's a Q6
For me with the q1 i didnt need kilmat i liked it best with a forcebreak mod tape nod and the one sheet of foam they gave you, no ping, so good with some holy pandas.
1:43 How smart of him to Blur the actual Keyboard but not the recording on His Monitor.
hehe
Thanks Hipyo, very happy the KeyTrrrron!
Just got my first custom keyboard today (Keychron V6 Max with the Gateron Jupiter Red switches), and I love it so far! I have some coffee-themed keycaps from Etsy coming in the mail, and I'm very excited! :D
Having watched this vid, I just finished building my own _Keychron Q6._ I'd already picked the Q6 because, a) it's metal, b) ISO UK layout and c) keypad. For mine I'm gonna be using it for gaming, so I opted for linear switches, so I bought a set of _Gateron Box Ink V2s_ pre-lubed and filmed. I also got a set of _Ghost Judges Black Shimmer Cherry PBT Doubleshot_ keycaps. I applied the same mods, specifically the force break mod, PCB tape mod and instead of Kilmat, I opted for some Mass Loaded Vinyl to do the same job. Turned out a treat. So much thock.
Magic! FYI I hecking love keychron so much lol. Got a K2 for a cheap wireless keyboard for my server/backup PC
I just bought a K6 for a portable keyboard I can take to work! Keychron has some great budget options
To those who just bought a Q6 pro. The insides are very different. The battery is actually on the side where the killmat goes. It would be cool if we got a video for the q6 pro cuz im now terrified to mod it. Just going to do the force break and thats it.
Good to know. I just got a Q6 pro a few weeks ago and was looking at the killmat mod. Might just do the electrical tape and force break mod and decide after that about the killmat.
i wish i had a friend like hipyo
My colleague has the same keyboard as I do, but with tactile switches, it really feels like hitting a wall compared to my linears that type when I breathe on them.
I'm reevaluating my keyboard needs and I'm in full binge mode on your videos. One complication is that I type in dvorak. I didn't even realize that my keys weren't uniform until I moved them around and I was like ... that doesn't look right. But what I really miss are the home row "pointer goes here" bumps. My first thought (after seeing that all dvorak-specific keycaps I could find are not 'cute') was that I'd get unlabeled keys and then print/cut stickers on clear sticker paper for the keys. After seeing some side-print keycaps, I was like "oh I could get those, let qwerty users still see their labels, and have my own labels. Now I'm wondering if the keys would feel better to the fingers than the stickers, and if I should get normal keys and put the label on the side profile. I can feel some analysis paralysis coming on 😅
Does the kilmat also work with the Q6 pro? If not then what are other dampening foam reccomendations?
FINALLY A FULL SIZE! ITS SO HARD TO FIND ONE
Best magic, Stephen! Hipyo taught you well
Hipyo, I'm curious as to what you think about the Keychron K10. I've heard you say good things about other Keychron keyboards, but I'm trying to find something that will sound decent out-of-the-box for $100 with the ability to customize and upgrade it if I want. I need a numpad for work and I like Keychron's aesthetic (many other custom keyboards are too vibrant for me to bring to work).
have the same keyboard he has, passed it down to my brothers and still works great 😅
I've never really got the whole no num pad thing. I used it all the time so it's a must.
Hipyo introduced me to a new world of keeb modding. THANKYOU.
Love your videos! Can you please make a video about the G213 Prodigy keyboard like custom keys and modding? Keep the good work!
I was going to buy the Q3, the white version but they won't ship it to Spain so I bought a V3 and painted the case white and bought some awesome blue and white keycaps, and also some baby kangaroo switches. At the end I think I got something nicer than if I had bought the Q3 for about the same price
I got the K6 pro as my first real keyboard. i love it. havent touched it from stock.
i've been rocking an epomaker but i kinda want a better one as the epomaker one i have i can't open without damaging the chasse. gonna go with the keychron q5 with a knob b/c i've been spoiled by the knob and i don't wanna solder anything. barebones one so i can use the switches that will give me the sound i want without having a bunch of extra switches hanging around.
I have a keychron v3 (plastic version of q3 to save $100) and i couldn't be happier with it. QMK on linux works with standard hid driver, hotswappable, pretty common key layout, love it
4:57 I can feel you : I sent an email last week to Keychron saying all tools are missing from my Q1 Pro box, they answered : under the Quick Guide...
Very good magic Hipyo and Steven great magic so good Glad it wasn't a tough screw.
@12:07 lol at the FJB keys. BASED Hipyo.
As always, another aweosme video. also, im gonna think of trying te dustsilver lilac 75, thanks to ur video.
Keychron Q6 + Durock Dolphin Silent switches + Keychron PBT doubleshot cherry MX profile keycaps FTW! (2 keyboards with the same specks for home and office and only the keycaps colours differ between the two) AND I love them! I tried the noisy switches and I do have 3 full sets of them at home but they drive me up the wall! 100% keyboard squad unite!
HELL YEAH 100% rep! Whish I could get a decent one with ISO layout. The Q6 only has the weird small return key version.
It has both normal ISO and JIS versions
@@Henrex2000 literally not there on their website, and also sold out in general.
I picked up a Q2 the other week in the UK ISO layout with linears (the knob one), there are tonnes in stock if you stop around. Picked up mine from keyboardco.

I have a q6 and i wanted to try the kilmat mod, what width kilmat did you use? 1.3mm or 2mm?
Very good magic Hipyo and Steven! Great Magic! So good!
I’m still using my Microsoft a natural Keyboard that’s is like 20 years old. I really like natural keyboards and the closest I can find is the keychron Alice and I’m thinking of doing a build like this but I’m not sure the Alice has enough angle to the board and if I should a normal layout but it would be hard to go back. Also I really want a volume knob like this guy wants a number pad
I get that some folks only need WASD and space for pretty much anything they do on a computer. But a numpad is immensely helpful for many applications outside of CS:FortGrounds. Plus, fullsize keyboards are more comfortable than the squished-down alternatives.
HA, this is the budget build I did for my work office setup. Sweet build
Are these mods with tapes and all applicable to Zowie Celeritas II? It has optical switches (whatever that means, I am a total newbie) and I wouldn't want to destroy it lol I know it is not hot swappable as a result of the optical switches thing but I know people online still lubricate it and so on...
I have that exact same razer keyboard and just bought an assembled k4 just cuz it was the smallest I could find with a numpad.
2:19 Love the little glarses thingy
I enjoyed this a lot. I got here through the algorithm after looking at keyboards for my mom, who works from home and needs a new keyboard. Now I want to build 2 keyboards! When I saw the sheet of Kilmat I was like OK OK I like this content - I work in automotive repair and if you see this Hipyo you should try out MLV or Mass Loaded Vinyl sheets if you haven't already. I use a HyperX Alloy Core right now and it's the best keyboard I've had personally, but trying something new that I can build myself sounds very fun! I'm with Stephen on the 10-key, I worked as a grocery store cashier when I was younger and I can't live without it honestly, makes me feel good hammering those num-keys like I still remember all the PLUs for produce. If keyboards didn't have the upper segment of numbers and it was only the symbols I couldn't be happier, and there's probably some way to bind the keys so the shift key isn't needed, but it's not that much of nuisance. I also think you COULD use spray lube like Stephen suggested somewhat jokingly but you would have to use a dry spray like WD-40s PTFE "dry lube" spray in a quick sweeping motion over all keys at multiple angles as to not over-saturate. Dry-Lube is a go-to for sticky ignition tumblers for me. This all looks very fun, also quite expensive for a dang case, PCB, and switches to build a keyboard when you're just a regular joe, but I still love that there's a market for this custom stuff. You have some great recommendations with sound deadening though, it's the difference between a Honda Fit and a Mercedes S-Class. Thanks for the videos, I think I'm gonna watch a few more 🍻 cheers... P.S. this is 2 G&Ts deep/sorry not sorry
Full size keyboard user for life! Great video. Appreciate the numb pad love!
Thanks guys, I just bought a Razer Huntsman V2 Analog and every time I press a key it sounds like I'm firing a shotgun. Not impressed. I'm tempted to try Keychron and this video has really helped. I want to make my keyboard as quiet as possible, though, so I will do some research.
Yooo hipyo, do you think you could review one of the free keyboards you get from temu. My friend bought it and it’s honestly pretty solid for a free keyboard
I've been gaming on an uncustomized Keychron K2V2 Red for a few months and it works for gaming just fine. To me it's a gaming keyboard.
Very good magic Hipyo and Steven! Great magic, so good!
Got myself a Q3 at home, but needed numpad at work. Q6 to the rescue! Paired with Gazzew U4 switches and Keychron Iceberg caps. No pre-travel, great bump and silent stem, in both directions. (U4Tx for dampened top, and U4T if you want THOCK) Most silent keyboard in the office (by far), and i can use the palm-rest to get rid of pesky co-workers if they get to close.
Funnily enough, just stumbled on this video after ordering a Q6 to replace my dead Blackwidow, what a coincidence! For me though, 100% is really useful as I use the numpad a ton in MSFS (and apparently even for just day to day typing numbers? I didn't even realise that until I started using my backup 80% keyboard)
I love my numpads too and this is why I use the Keychron Q5, which is 96% (also called 1800 by other brands) and it's a reduced footprint while maintaining the numpad. I have bought more than 100 keyboards in last 10 years and the Q5 is my ideal keyboard, so much that I got a lighter V5 (plastic) for my business trips.
Hey just to let you know 96% is also my favorite layout. I feel like there arent too many of us out there! lol
I really like 96% too, but I ended up buying the full size V6 because I thought it would be easier to get keycaps for. And because I want to teach my son what a real keyboard is after he's only used laptops.
@@KX36W dad, good parenting
i just got the Q3 Pro and i am OBSESSED. the banana switches are heaven
The only issue I see with stuffing the keyboard is that the Q keyboards, as far as I know, have a sort of floating PCB that sits on gaskets. So the PCB moving is a feature. By cramming in foam and stuffing the case, you are eliminating that movement.
Yes but you are also removing the echo chamber thereby reducing noise from keypresses.
Can you create any keyboard layout on any 'base'? In my country we use Azerty (Belgian, which isn't the same as French).
Man this is an Experience!
I have been having quality issues with KeyChron K10. The first two I purchased new from Amazon and both had non functioning keys so they were returned to Amazon. So purchased a third direct from the manufacture. That all the keys function however the LED behind the I key doesn't work. I reached out to KeyChron supports about this and the only thing they would offer is a $15 credit. I can't speak about the Q line of products though.
I just got my Keychron c1, and the stabilizers are well factory over-lubed.
Very good magic Hipyo and Steven, great magic, so good!
Really enjoyed this video. What are those crazy looking mics you two are wearing?
I like the blur on 1:43 but damn nice second monitor
I love keychron but ever since you've introduced me to the drop 75, I can't take my eyes off it
can you do this with a wooting? want creamy or silent with wooting rapid triggers...
i am typing in that exact same razer keyboard from the exact same time ago and looking into building a custom keyboard! crazy
My first keyboard was a Razer black widow but now I’m getting into custom so I have a monsgeek m1 with fewer switch
I own Keychron K4v2 1800 layout If ur into Numpad 1800 is compact version of full size
I do NOT have the patience to lube 100 switches. Where can I buy Silent Red Linear pre-lubed switches?? Thank you for your help and the great videos :)
I had a 60%, but I was really missing my home and end keys. I got a slightly squished full size keyboard but for some reason it was also missing either the home or end key (I can't remember which); I currently use that for work because the numpad is useful. For my personal computer, I am using a tenkeyless and the day I switch to it, I immediately missed my numpad because I have a pin to log into my computer.
