How to Fix a Jittering Scroll Wheel (& Razer Deathadder Elite Dissasembly)

Today I will show how to fix a glitchy mouse scroll wheel, a problem that also seems to plague a lot of razer mice. Keep in mind that you will likely need to take apart your mouse for this.

  • My niche hobby is fixing gaming mices (I fixed dozens of them for my friends, family members etc.), so here I am with few words of my unsolicited advice... Part which you were repairing is called "mouse wheel encoder". Almost every mouse on the market today is prone to scroll jittering after some time of mouse use (1-3 years typically), because there are microscopic metal shavings which accumulate inside encoder on the contacts of encoder wheel (it's the part you was cleaning in the video)... they are causing false connections between contacts when encoder parts are moving (rotating). The rule of thumb is - the more you scroll, the sooner those metal shavings will accumulate there and sooner you'll encounter jittering during scrolling. So it's a good practice to not use wheel to scroll web pages (use MMB or scrollbars instead) and use wheel only when absolutely necessary (in games), so you preserve it's lifespan as much as possible. Only mices which are imune to scroll jittering are the ones with optical encoders. Sadly, novadays those are only few models from Logitech with "infinite scroll" feature... rest of the mices on the market (99.99%) have mechanical encoders (like this one in the video), which are ALL prone to scroll jittering after some time of use. Why almost every mouse manufacturer use them? Because they are cheap, easy to implement in the mouse design and it's a good thing for manufacturer (planned obsolence), so you have to buy a new mouse every 2-3 years. Sigh. Anyways - if you want to fix a problem with this type of mechanical encoder properly, you have to change it for a new piece. Blowing, disassembling, cleaning with isopropyl etc. of the old one are temporary fixes which usually last few months only. Those new encoders can be bought really cheap from Aliexpress (just search for "mouse wheel encoder"), they are like $1-2/piece. You just have to know *exact* height of your encoder, it is measured in millimiters from the base of encoder to center of the hole (search for "mouse wheel encoder height" on Google and switch to images... you'll get it). Typical height of encoders in the last generations of DeathAdders is 14mm, but it can vary from model to model, so double check it to be 100% sure when buying it. My advice is to buy few pieces (3 - 4) to have some stock of them for future repairs... they are really cheap, so why not ;) When you get them, disassembly your mouse, desolder old encoder, clean holes on the pcb, solder in a new piece and assembly mouse together. It's not that hard, but it's not easy either. People are mostly struggling with desoldering, because there are 5 contacts which are almost impossible to heat at the same time with regular soldering iron, so if you didn't do it before, watch some YT tutorials how to do it with ChipQuick, soldering wick, desoldering pump etc., or ask someone with good soldering/desoldering skills to do it for you. Soldering new encoder in place is relatively easy then. Pro tip for desoldering of mouse encoder - if you have soldering gun (not iron.... GUN), it's matter of seconds with custom made soldering tip to desolder it, because you'll be able to heat all 5 contacts *AT ONCE* - here is a video from my 2nd YT account for that -> kzhead.info/sun/qbZ6lJiQoWZ6YIk/bejne.html Good luck.

    • Well I think it's the sticky condition of the mouse wheel encoder you are talking about. In some countries including Asia is hard to find all these parts, my advice is just to roll a little piece of metal or any substance which can attach to the mouse wheel permanently. Per my experience, I use glue gun to fill the piece and make it more contactable between the wheel and the encoder. And guess it works as it improves the tightness.

  • I have Razer Viper 8khz and i had the same issue. Tried blowing up but didn't work. I raged and went to the bathroom with my mouse. I washed it with just water, I also scrolled the wheel while doing that. After washing, I had to shake the mouse fast so little water drops came out of it, after that i dried it with towel. Lastly, I also used hairdryer in hot mode and with full speed to dry inside and out. Believe it or not, I connected the mouse after I was sure it's almost (or fully) dried and it worked. I know this is risky, but it worked for me and I tried that last night, tonight I'm still using without zero problems. I'm not taking responsibilty if you try and damage your components. It worked for me so I wanted to share.

  • Ty, it helped me fix the wheel on my DA mini v2, another tip for anyone trying, the little plastic wheel that you take of the thing to clean, it has 3 little point arms inside it, make sure they're not all the way flattened inside the wheel, if they are, take something very sharp/thin and pull they up a little, if they're all flattened inside the wheel they might not trigger the scroll signal.

  • So instead of potentially breaking the sensor for the wheel i would suggest getting an ESD brush and some 91% IPA, with the ipa saturate the sensor and then go get the bristles into where the sensor is while scrubbing just to break up the debris that builds up and then hit it with canned/compressed air to dry it off

A tip for anyone else who doesn't want to bend the tabs: I just used a q-tip to express some iso-alcohol into the wheel sensor a few times, then used compressed air to blow out any debris. That fixed it for me. Might be worth trying before tab-bending as last resort.

  • Was looking for some mice shaped like old DeathAdder and stumbled upon your video. Remembered that one of the last of my faulty deathadders from 12 years ago must lay somewhere in the closet - decided to give it a try just for fun. Hadn't alcohol but thought that some Hilti spray for 'lubrication and cleaning' can't do harm, so cotton swab, just a drop of hilty to rub the wheel contacts - and after 3-4 full turns of the scroll wheel it began to work properly! Mouse which had a crazy wheel and wasn't used for 12 years - returned to life. Lol. Great success =) Edit: Somehow before writing this comment got wd40 can before my eyes and in the original comment typed wd40 without noticing it, but in reality I used Hilty spray for lubrication and cleaning.

  • Thanks for the vid it was a lot of help, my deathadder was reverse scrolling and jumpy so I did this exact process, the wheel encoder thing didnt have any dirt in it or anything. (its been only 2 months since i bought it anyway) the stick going thru the middle of the wheel had a slight bent on the encoder side but I dont know if it happened during my disassembly or if it was already there. So I fixed that and put it back together, it doesn't skip anymore but it has no increment like its very smooth if that makes sense. I am not gonna bother fixing that because it works now but im surprised it happened so quickly, my previous deathadder had no problems for 2.5 years almost.

    @OnlyVuimo@OnlyVuimo10 ай бұрын
