It’s time to answer the question you’ve all been asking… Which BMW M3 AWD colour is quickest - black or yellow?
…Ok, not really! However, these two BMW M3s are still going head-to-head, because although they look the same, all is not as it seems! You see, while the yellow M3 is the regular car, the black one has had a Stage One tune! So the question is, just how much quicker is it?
Well, let’s take a look at the stats. Both cars are packing the same 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six, and both cars weigh in at 1,780kg. However, while the regular M3 puts down 510hp & 650Nm, the tuned edition delivers an awesome 600hp & 750Nm!
So, the result may be a foregone conclusion, but just how different will the performance be?! There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

  • Engineer here. Explanation below: A carbon ceramic brake would increase the stopping performance *if* the problem was to make the wheel stop rotating and steel brakes couldn't stop the rotating force. However, all brake pads and discs can in fact lock up the wheels and therefore apply maximum force to the disc. This however is not a preferred way as the wheel have more surface contact friction when rotating and not sliding. A sliding tyre has reduced grip in comparison to a rotating one. The goal is to maximise the friction between tyre and tarmac, to create the most counter power backward, thus slowing the car down. This means that tyre performance, car balance and so on have the most effect on braking performance, not the brakes. As mentioned, disc fade on track can in fact limit the brake performance as a glowing hot brake made out of steel makes it impossible to provide friction between disc and pad, therefor be the actual limiting factor. This is where carbon ceramics shine as they provide basically fade free friction performance. Best regards, and keep it up. Love the videos!

  • My experience with carbon ceramic brakes on an M5 is that they do give you this subjective added sense of security during normal driving altho in reality it's probably the same performance or slightly worse at lower speeds than M-performance steel brakes. One thing I did note was that the ceramics were worse right after a car wash compared to steel ones, I had to do a few quick tap braking maneuvers before hitting the road right after in order to dry the contact zone. I learned that the hard way the first time after leaving a car wash and noticing my brake pedal did almost nothing as I was approaching a stop light going 60 km/h lol Lastly, one added benefit for everyday use of ceramics besides weight saving etc, is the lack of brake dust clogging your rims. That alone makes me want ceramics only going forward.

    • Ceramics last longer in general and if you ever take them to a track they practically don't fade giving you a ton of performance even in hard braking zones. Main downside to ceramics is cost of replacement and higher optimal operating temperatures meaning at high speed you need to be quite barbaric with the brakes until they start biting.

  • I'm an engineer who's spent the last 10 years designing brake systems for race cars, hopefully I can explain braking 101 and debunk a few common myths whilst I'm at it. A couple fundamentals to start then: 1) The grip produced by a tyre is proportional to the load acting through the tyre. 2) Theoretically, the peak deceleration (and thus shortest stopping distance) is achieved when all 4 tyres are right at the limit of grip available BUT without exceeding the grip available (i.e. almost at lockup, but not quite locking up) Over a SINGLE stop a vehicles braking distance is almost always 'grip limited' (this is certainly the case for all modern cars anyway). I.e. the grip provided by the tyre is the limiting factor in stopping distance, NOT the brake pad/disc performance. In a grip limited stop, the brakes can easily overpower the available grip (i.e. cause lockup/ABS). This is because, over just one low-ish speed stop, the temperature rise in the brake components is not enough to cause brake fade, even on the OE non-upgraded brakes. Upgrading the brakes can still have a benefit over a single stop, for example: lower dust, less noise, improved modulation.... but upgraded brakes can never shorten a vehicles single stop braking distance more than its theoretical shortest braking distance, which is governed by the physical attributes of the vehicle itself. For example, here are some ways you could reduce stopping distances over a SINGLE stop: 1) Fit grippier tyres 2) Lower the cars centre of gravity (CoG) 3) Achieve a weight distribution of between 50:50 and 30:70 (front:rear). 1) Fitment of gripper tyres seems straightforward enough. 2) A lower CoG helps because it reduces the weight transfer under braking, resulting in less variance in the load acting through each tyre which consequently allows you to 'tune' the brake system to hone in better on the 'perfect' brake bias for shortest stopping distances. The 'perfect' brake bias achieved when both front and rear axles lock up simultaneously as you exceed the threshold of available grip. What you don't want is the front axle locking up much earlier than the rears, otherwise the rear tyres could be doing more work to decelerate the car faster (known as a 'front bias'). You also don't want a 'rear bias' otherwise it's like pulling the handbrake every time you brake hard.... Most cars are set up with a front biased brake system from the factory because understeer is more controllable than oversteer, but this is to the detriment of achieving shortest possible stopping distances. 3) And finally, a perfect 50:50 or even a slightly rearward weight distribution helps to minimise pitch under hard braking and keep the rear tyres from lifting off the ground, so they can do their fair share of decelerating the vehicle (this is why Porsches often do well in brake tests, the engine sitting over the rear axle enables Porsche to run a more even brake bias front:rear). Carbon ceramic brakes will very slightly reduce stopping distances over a SINGLE stop due to the lighter brake discs having less rotational inertia, however the difference will be extremely small and within the margin for error in the test (i.e. as suggested in your video, but this difference of 30cm or so could also be easily explained by difference in tyre compound/age for instance). This is due to the fact that, before the brakes can decelerate the car, first they must overcome the brake discs own rotational inertia. A lower brake disc inertia allows more work to go directly into decelerating the vehicle itself (Same effect could be achieved with fitting lightweight forged wheels for instance, which would also allow the vehicle to accelerate harder due to reducing 'drivetrain losses'). Over MULTIPLE successive stops the brakes could get hot enough that they start to fade, at which point stopping distances become 'brake limited'. The brakes can no longer overwhelm the grip from the tyres and the vehicle pushes on. At this stage the only way to reduce stopping distances is to upgrade the brake system by fitting more fade resistant pads than can cope with the high temperatures (or employ brake cooling to keep temps in check). By the way, the cause of brake fade is via a mechanism called 'pad de-gassing'. When the pad gets hot enough, the phenolic resin (think of it as the cement) that binds the friction material together begins to break down/burn. The breaking down of the phenolic resin creates a film of gas between the pad and disc. As the gas builds the pressure increases, which forces the pads away from the disc and reduces braking torque. Alas, friction scientists who are tasked with increasing pad endurance often use higher quality resins that don't de-gas until much higher temperatures. Really high end race pads don't even use phenolic resins at all, these are known as 'sintered' brake pads. In a sintered brake pad, extreme pressure/heat (over 1,200 centigrade) is used to fuse the friction material together instead of a resin. The total absence of any phenolic/organic material in the friction material means there quite literally is nothing to degrade at extreme temperatures, effectively making a brake pad that is impossible to fade (unless you exceed 1,200 C at which point the pad would melt, but trust me, the caliper/disc would melt long before 1,200 C). I love watching these Car Wow videos but I always laugh/cringe when it gets to the 'brake test'. The single stop format of the test doesn't really tell viewers anything about how 'good' a vehicles brakes are, instead it basically tells you how good the tyres are, or how well the chassis/brake balance is. An industry standard brake test for example is the 'AMS Test' which is to perform 10 stops from 60mph with the vehicle loaded up to its gross vehicle mass. The idea is the weight and repetitive stops create substantial heat energy that reveals how well braking performance is maintained during continuous high energy driving. I've done this test multiple times myself, loading vehicles up to their GVM is tricky and dangerous (we do it by using 25kg bags of metal shot) so perhaps Car Wow could simply do the test unloaded instead which would be easier? Maybe increase the starting speed to 80 or even 100mph to push energies up a bit, otherwise after 10 stops from 60mph something like a Porsche 911 Carrera won't even be breaking a sweat. Accelerating to 60mph and then slamming on the brakes is no fun, I can assure you, however it would make great clickbait if Matt chundered whilst trying ;-)

  • 9:15 ... Hello, I'm an Engineer. lol The answer: In a imaginary world, if the two cars have the same brake pad, "same" weight, same tyre, same tyre pressure, same crosswind direction, same wheel, same height, same sufrace grip, and the only thing different is the brake rotor, the stopping distance should be the same. But in our world, things like fuel in the tank, human reaction time, dirt in the road, makes more effect than the disk or the brake pad. So, the only important requirement is to have enough force to hit the ABS threshold for all wheels. It is possible to stop the car (some older cars) in less distance if you release the brake pedal just enough that the pedal stops shaking but still at the limit of braking power.
