  • To put things in perspective, Ukraine had 176 ICBMs and over 2000 tactical nukes along with bombers able to carry them. They gave it all up in exchange for security guarantees from USA, UK and Russia ( Budapest Memorandum 1994 ). One would say that assisting Ukraine now when its being invaded should be obvious thing to do when you signed up on their security and they gave up literally thousands nukes...

    • Everybody is saying this dumb nonsense comment trying to make a point without analyzing the whole situation, the real issue is that when your neighbor gave you security guarantees after disarming you, that does not give you authority or a right to invite all his or her enemies to stay with you, you are absolutely looking for a problem or opening a can of worms, stop analyzing a situation to suit your brainwashed western narrative or agenda

  • I suspect that giving Ukraine enough to hold off russia but not enough to win (so far) is intentional for two reasons. One, is threading the needle of slowly ramping up the NATO/West aid to Ukraine in a way that doesn't trigger putin into doing something really stupid and dangerous. The other is to drain down russia's military and economic capability. Ending this war too quickly would allow russia to quickly rebuild/recover. The goal is likely to completely drain down russia's military capabilities and to give time for the sanctions to cause critical damage to russia's economy, so that it will take decades to recover, not years.

    @Graybeard_@Graybeard_ Жыл бұрын
    • Maybe… But dragging the war at the expense of how many human lives? And I’m talking about both sides, both sides are loosing untold number of troops and civilians. Russia’s defeat must happen quick and then on the negotiating table that’s when you drain them of everything, huge reparations, etc.

  • It's impossible to overstate how important the last point made by Jen Stoltenberg is. If Putin/Russia wins this war it will be a tragedy for Ukraine but it will inevitably lead to a destabilization of Europe and indeed the whole world. Yes supporting Ukraine is the moral thing to do but the West benefits enormously from the heroic sacrifices being made by ordinary Ukrainians. It's important to drive home that message to the populations of Western countries. The cost of helping Ukraine now is a pittance compared to the cost we would incur by having to fight a full scale war on the European continent against a belligerent Russia.

Did you know that Putin wanted to join NATO some years ago, and he was rejected? There's an excellent lecture from 2018 by Vladimir Pozner where he talks about how the US is directly responsible for what Putin turned into for Russia and the world. It's almost prophetic, in a sense, after seeing what happened in 2022.

For Leopard2 and M1 tanks the limiting factor will be training and the logistical trains to support the tanks once deployed. In the long run, Ukraine will be transitioning from Soviet era equipment to NATO standard equipment across the board. But Ukraine can't just stop the war to focus on this transition. • Every country in Europe should give any thing they can to Ukraine even to the extent of depleting their inventory. The only reason most of these stockpiles even exist is for protection against Russian aggression. It seems like it should be all hands on deck to eliminate the original threat for good. Every one can then concentrate on China.

    • While Putin has proven that his military is not the fearsome force it once was, you are right to acknowledge that there are other nations just waiting for signs of weakness in NATO nations. China, Saudis, prk would all love to take advantage. We cannot weaken our own arsenals, but I'm sure there's a lot of nearly obsolete equipment laying around to help Ukraine.

  • The latest and updated versions of the Leopard tanks are highly sophisticated weapons of war. Under peacetime conditions it takes six months to train the tank's four person crew to operate, manoeuvre and maximize the firepower of this beast. Delivering tanks is just the first step. Training crews, including tank maintenance crews, is a huge part of the overall challenge. It will take time. That said, Russia is faced with an identical problem, especially after the tank and personnel losses it has already experienced in the war.

      @Lurch685@Lurch685 Жыл бұрын
    • I would suggest that the training times you have stated are for green recruits. Ininitally the Ukrainians that these tanks are going to be deployed to are not green. They are probably some of the most battle hardened and experienced tank crews in Europe right now. I would suggest that the training time would be less than a month.
