Steven Seagal is DANGEROUS

I survived 24 hours with Steven Seagal. He gave me a 'makiwara' (punching board) to condition my hands & knuckles. Although Aikido is not famous for striking, Sensei Seagal practices a martial art based on Japanese Jiu-jitsu. This includes punches and kicks. But unlike Brazilian Jiujitsu (BJJ), it doesn't involve submission grappling. Because the last place a samurai wants to be on the battlefield is the ground... Watch until the end for an epic surprise!

I think he has the personality of someone who is dedicated to their sport for a lifetime. Very few people have the level of dedication that it takes to become a master at what they do and they automatically resent it. I hope he stays doing what he does for very long time. Every time I watch a video with him in it I pick up some little nugget of information to hang onto. He’s a gem.

I trained with a friend for 8 years who was a dedicated karateka (though he died a few years back) who would informally cross train with me. We often had serious talks like this which ranged from the mechanical/technical, to history and philosophy. These discussions take what most consider to be niche "hobbies" fitness routines, or purely self protection training and elevate the practice into something greater. True martial artists embrace this path as a permanent way of life and spiritual growth. Thank you for letting us participate in this discussion.

    • Wow... So many of you people just don't know a single thing about any martial arts, do you? When a teacher's students are "going along" with a technique, it's for their own safety because their arms and wrists may get broken very easily if they resist. They are simply done that way as a demonstration for students to learn them and learn to physically apply or escape the damage of those techniques. They have special rolls and falls designed to protect their wrists and arms, which is what students are taught to do. It's all part of the training. Just like a stuntman needs to prepare and practice before a stunt without actually doing the real stunt, before someone can use a martial arts technique, one has to first learn the technique through physical contact and simulation without actually getting into a real fight.

I’ve been a wing chun practitioner for 6 years now and will probably never quit practicing under him for any reason. His philosophy, guidance and the overall community and culture he’s built for his school has been a great pleasure to be apart of. When people claim it’s all about “movement and defense/using opponent’s momentum”, I get genuinely confused. Real aikido has a lot of offense involved, and includes generation of your own power, not just using your opponent’s. The way it’s being portrayed today has seriously damaged its legacy.

If you deduct his celebrity status and all the silly antics that come about from that domain, he seems just fine just as an Aikido teacher. A very, VERY eccentric Aikido teacher who just loves to sneak in undertones of international superspy assasin when he talks, but also someone who's genuinely really in love with Aikido. Sure, you can say what you will about the martial art itself, how it struggles to find a place in combat sports or it's dubious practicality in self defense. Even if it's just for the sake of Aikido itself, you can't deny that he's really into it. For what it's worth, he'd make one hell of an interesting teacher.

  • That was cool. The media are trying to discredit Sensei Seagal, but he knows his stuff. Thank You for bringing the masterclass.

  • Dear Mr. Enkamp, I really wish to thank you for having shared this interview with Sensei Seagal. I've watched the to videos and I could feel and appreciate the spirituallity and the philosophy of Sensei Seagal: I think I could listen him for hours speaking, without interrupt him one single time. Thank you very much.

  • Well done sir. I was first introduced to Aikido in 1993 back in the day when his movies were top shelf. I found a great master to train under and never went to anyone else. Little did I know that I would be following his advice but living it. Best interview I have ever seen, both episodes.

  • Apart from the technis he showed (i come from a muay thai background and im used to fight on the outside, besides clinching, so im not used to all the handtraps/ inside stuff) i can really agree on something: 'find a good teacher with a good philosophy and spend time practicing with him'. I trained 7y under a 2x world champ in muay thai, 3x european champ, 12x german champ and k1 max fighter in both kickboxing and muay thai. He also had a background in taekwondo and wing chung. His philosophical applications of technics are really what stood out in compairison to other coaches (besides of course his skill etc). Simple guidelines like 'when you want to kick, punch first'. Or sometimes its better to just take a hit to deliver a direct counter with stronger force (because if you spend energy and focuse blocking or parrying, your counter wont be so quick) were what lead to me winning many sparrings and fights. Also his general eye and fight iq influenced our gyms performance and overall understanding hughely. After i trained with him for 7y and went to some competition, i was able to win most other muay thai/ kickboxinf students with about the same experience from other schools relatively easy. Even bigger and stronger guys. His method was just kongruent and didnt have any holes. Also you learned how to spot holes in the enemy and countet them. A true Sensei he was ❤ sadly he lost his fighting spirit and went capitalist since many pupils he trained for years left him. Now people tell me, his training is bad and lacks much
