For years I've been trying to buy a "Cheap" Porsche 911.. Yet each time I've tried, I've failed! Whether it be hidden damage, excessive rebuild costs or just plain getting carried away with a build, it's never worked out. Will this FINALLY be THE cheap Porsche 911??

One video and not 49 episodes, start to finish, good entertainment, no BS, great level of detail. Just perfect. Thank you!
And 85 ads
Want to say the exact same as well. Great video.

I am blown away by the fact that this ISN'T a several part video and gets right to the chase. Like, with how youtube's algo has been this is such a rare video. Appreciate it.
Seriously, most creators would do a 5+ part series rebuilding this
So you mean it's doable if you have a spare $16k and you're a mechanic who is already familiar with 911s and you have a shop.....
Spare $16k, you're a fairly handed mechanic familiar with engine removal, and rebuilds. And 4 jack stands in a driveway if you want to be honest.
Honestly sounfs like tun if you have the money
Sounds like a good deal for a 911
These 99 model year 996 are super special! No onboard computer, different interior materials, throttle cable, amber lights, all make it unique to the 99. There are also rumors these were built on the production line at the same time as the 993 (at least the 98 build date cars). They are also incredibly light, IIRC just under 3000 pounds.
I have a very early 99 built in March 1998. It was built on the same line as the last of the 993s which were built through April 1998. The very first 996s were built in October 1997. With the limited research I did, it appears that the earliest cars, 1997 builds, were built primarily for Europe (and a handful for Australia?). There may be some January 1998 cars built for the USA, but it appears almost all were built starting in February 1998.
Loved this spec as well. It’s a great entry level Porsche
I'm sure there is a super cheap exhaust mod for this car that Matt Watson from CarWow has done to his
So this is about the closest you're going to get to an 'old school' 911 feel in a water-cooled gen, yea?
Yes. So much yes to that! These things are cool and rare-ish. 3,649 units worldwide and super cool!
What a beautiful car. No crazy wings and other crap. You did the right thing by not butchering it. Some old guy like me would love this as a weekend cruiser at a reasonable cost.
He butchered it with the steering wheel
@@WayneLambrightIII I kind of let that slide because of the otherwise restraint. Frankly I preferred the stock wheels too.
@@WayneLambrightIII Sales people selling these cars will all say the same thing. The wishful thinkers enthusiasts love customization so badly. I don't collect them or sell them. To me all the better. That makes me in the later category.
@@WayneLambrightIII The tan interior is nauseating. He did the right thing switching to a black steering wheel.
@@Ogma3bandcamp vast majority of 996 enthusiasts detest that out dated diarrhea grandpa interior and prefer the 3 spoke steering wheel
that oil might not be clear, but it do be looking like the coffee I make in the morning
Nice having it in one video. Never would have changed the wheels though - makes it look like a proper heap which I'd immediately scroll past if I was looking to buy. There used to be a ton of them, with. thedodgy gt3 bodykits and those wheels, and they all looked really cheap. Fried egg 996 should play to its strenghts.
The amount of content you put in one video is amazing! Super entertaining.
You scored on that replacement engine looks like it was a factory replacement for a car with a failed IMS. Mileage will be less than reported for the car, upgraded bearing, etc. You’ve got yourself a nice car there now.
You got such a great deal, I can't imagine finding a 996 under 10k in Europe

Love your vids , love Porsche, had a repair shop for over 30 years. Just wanted to tell you that the oversized IMS bearing from 05- 08 are replaceable without splitting the case. There is a tool that shaves the block a few mm to enable the bearing to be pulled out. I have that tool and used it a few times, works great
So then those style ims bearing that require your tool. Still have that same problem of grenadine. Seemed like everything was really good. Till you showed up with your correct tools and knowledge. LOL.
they do although they are not as prevalent to fail as the earlier ones. I have changed about a dozen of the newer ones and they all showed signs of excessive wear. BTW I closed my shop about 2 years ago but still have all the tools. I might be tempted to sell you the setup although you can rent them from EPS (european parts solution) they also sell the roller bearing which I believe is a much better solution than others that i have tried on hundreds of vehicles. I specialized in Porsche only and the roller bearing from EPS was the only one that II never had problems with.
Just park the car at a slant with the nose up so the IMS bearing is not submerged in engine oil while parked and oil doesn't run into and get trapped inside the IMS and eventually turns acidic and washes out the bearing lubricant.
I like your idea lol, however the Porsche engineers thought of that and put seals on both sides of the bearing so that just enough oil gets in to wash out any grease but not enough to actually lubricate it. , after all it was supposed to be a "lifetime" bearing
@Harryrcb I've taken many m96 and m97 engines apart and when changing IMS bearing always found rather bad smelling acidic oil inside the IMS. The IMS bearing would mostly go bad on garage queens, not on daily drivers or even cars that were tracked. Cars parked for weeks at a time i figure will accumulate more oil inside the shaft to go bad and wash the lubricants out of the bearing.
This video is the first I have ever seen from you and an instant subscribe. Not dicing this up into 20 episodes, a 6 month break and a “what happened to the (project name here) car?” Video before finishing it 10 episodes later is so refreshing. Love this.
Love this video. Bought a front end crashed 2002 996 with the 3.6. Fixed everything for about 1000 in parts from local dismantling yards and junkyards. Bought Cargraphic wheels and about to send it. 101k miles and the IMS was already done.
What was your total Cost? {& time}?
Super excited for this build. You got an amazing deal! The underbody looks really good, and has not corrosion, that is what the best of them look like at this point. Just needs a dry ice cleaning.
Awesome...you did the 'long content' video PERFECTLY !! Progression and pacing were on point as this 43 minute video felt more like 15 minutes...GREAT Job!!
The 996 variant is a great car. You don’t always need the “fastest” 911 to have lots of fun. Absolutely love my 996.1. Great content. Looking forward to more of it! 🍻
TOTAL WIN! Love your videos! Straight up shop talk and common sense. The smoky exhaust on the right side (from the left bank) was a hint to the #2 cilinder crack when it goes on the lift. Great job!!
I honestly think the original steering wheel looked better. Just needed a recover around the wheel itself. The one you swapped it for with all the air bag lines on looked pretty rough.
stock wheels fit better too tbh
the original steering wheel look much better now is look like crap
Was about to comment the same. Original looks, well original. Fully tan interior looks quite nice, now it looks like it's missing something.
The ticking sound of the "new" engine, combined with smoke out of one exhaust looks like a cylinder liner failure about to happen. "Kolbenkipper" we call it in Germany, when the piston has worn out the cylinder to an oval shape and can get stuck while moving. Was really noticable on my Targa after 230.000km with the original, unopened engine. Sadly, the ticking got so loud that it was better not to drive it any further. It did still feel and run well, but there was a chance of catastrophic engine failure at every run, and you don't want that on the Autobahn at 280km/h. So it had to go, its parts will help other 996 live on now.
Loved watching this! My speed yellow ‘99 had the same kind of failure. I opted to get it rebuilt into a Hartech/SRD 3.7. It’s still a couple days away from being completed, but this video gave me my 996 fix for now.
You should post a video I'd love to see it!
I daily drive a '99 Carrera 4 and it's an amazing car. Congrats guys. As cool as those wheels are, I kind of wish you guys left the turbo twists on. Those are legendary wheels in their own right and they fit the car. Also I don't share your hatred for the four spoke, remember the steering wheel on the first 911?
Fuchs look awesome on the 996.1!
Love all the Porsche projects and uploads! Keep it up guys!
Love your videos…a 99 911 with a newer engine for under 16k is not bad at all…having said that I would have jammed an LS3 into it. The black steering wheel was well worth the investment…I prefer the stock rims over the BBS units. I’d consider that project a lot of Win!
Was thinking the same thing, I also prefer the stock rims
Great content as always!! Youve matured as a presenter so well..!! Never scared of being completely honest and 100% real. Love it please keep up the awesome work.. Great team!!!❤❤❤
Thanks! IMHO, everyone considering buying a used "cheap" Porsche should watch this video. Wish it were around when I bought mine... but probably would have bought it anyway. Also, if you are bent on a Porsche, why not join the PCA first... then start looking at those for sale by the other members? Works for Rolls Royce / Bentley.😁
I actually love the 996 generation! Currently ls swapping mine and it is extra expensive! Good thing u stayed with the m96 power plant
Another great video! I usually watch KZhead videos late at night and usually pause them, go to sleep and watch the rest another day. With ScrapLife videos, I just can't do that, I HAVE to watch them to the end!! Looking forward to the adventures in 2024, have a good New Year everyone ❤👍
Lee, Great work, love the channel. One thing you could do to make the interior look better and was a Porsche option is the paint the center console the exterior color. That would make the wheel a little more at home and it doesn't cost much at all.
What I like best about ScrapLife Garage is we get outstanding car content and some chuckles along the way! Well done on the Porsche!
Thanks for sharing with us, much appreciation! ❤️
😲 so amazing and positive to see a YT-er not over inflate prices of items sold on ebay, and the overall process. This is a great video! 👍
I jave the dame car almost identical. I put a custom paint on mine . I have had one problem a crank sensor. No other problems. And it only has 79,000 miles only one tune up. Runs great. Thanks for video. Take care of the car it will not let you down.
You remind me a lot of the LR Time couple in that you hit these projects with this absolutely infectious enthusiasm. I am definitely a fan.
Dude im so glad you stayed with your plan and so the engine with budget, best choice!
It’s a win all the way. 😀 best outcome all round. Great result. Looking forward to more great content for 2024. Happy New Year to the team at Scraplife 🎉
Your channel just popped up on my feed this morning now I am a new subscriber! Absolutely love this content!
You should use a safety strut on the back of the 911 when raised on the 2-post lift. Also make sure if the lift has a pair of longer arms and a pair of shorter arms, the back end (heavy end) of the car is lifted by the short arms. Typically this involves backing up the car on the lift.
First off im happy you kept the porsche original and not ls swapped.. When it comes to ur new motors lines being cut, when ordering stuff from a salvage yard we expect that the client has all the lines they need ready being that u disconnected everything from the motor side when u removed it from the vehicle.. as a salvage yard tech we cut all hoses to get the motor out as fast as possible and also with the expectation that the client has all lines replaced or waiting when installing the motor. You can’t expect perfect from a salvage yard motor.
Tremendous job. Educational and entertaining, all with good humor and positive energy. You killed it. Well done;
This was so interesting....and fun to watch ! Thanks for the content....and kudos for being able to put the car together again and it´s still working...because it looks so complicated to a non-expert like me....
You guys are superb at what you do ,not just the excellent video production, which is the highest grade and super professional, also the engineering knowledge you relay to the viewer is of immense value . All the best from Normandie 🇫🇷 France.
I bought my 2000 996 pre-Covid for slightly more - silver with black interior, 6 speed short shift kit, IMS bearing done, white dials, had some front bumper damage, and some interior wear & tear. I could have spent double on a "nicer" one, but I've done very light work - traded rims, duck tail, sport steering wheel, sport exhaust, intake and some other engine tweaks. I've done brakes and will do some suspension work. It is an outlaw and I do auto cross, have taken it out to Laguna Seca and drive it to work and on weekends. It's an incredible car and SO much fun to drive, especially on back roads, yet I've shown it at Monterey Car Week, Werks and local car shows. It's my modern taken on an '73 RS tribute! I love everything about it. It's easily more than doubled in value! The only thing I regret is not buying a turbo since they cost so much more these days. But this is a sleeper classic. Not the fastest, but sub 6 seconds 0-60. The drive, though.....the drive...and the sound!!!
Simply love his videos ! They are honest and move along nicely 👌
Wow, great vid 👑 All we need now is a Grundo exhaust hack, and a dyno run 😊
First time watching one of your vids love seeing all of this project in one vid unlike most KZheadrs where you see like 6 different parts and they leave ya hanging.
FYI, When doing a rear engine/front mounted radiator engine car. A Vacuum should be pulled to ensure there is no air in the system, if not there will always be issues.
this was fun to watch great video. i love your positive energy never get mad makes working on cars fun
You heard wrong. The saying goes like this: "There is no such thing as a budget Porsche, only a budget FOR a Porsche." And PORSCHE stands for Plenty Of Racing Should Cause Heavy Expenditure. If I told you how much I spent on my 928 over 12 years of ownership, you would not believe me. The newest information about the IMS bearing is as follows: The reason it can fail is due to drivers failing to drive aggressively enough when going hills. If you allow the car to stay in a high gear, with low revs while driving up a hill, the bearing can fail eventually. But if you change down a gear, raise the revs higher than the automatic would normally, then your IMS will never fail. Period. Edit: Great to see you got the full leather package with the leather covered binnacle. The base level trim is... basic, and if you cover the Porsche logo on the wheel with your hand, it feels like you are sitting in a cheap Lexus from the 90s. Nice buy. 31:40 - Yep. 95% of all engine damage occurs in the first 15 seconds after startup - but only about 9 seconds for a 996 - because it's a horizontal motor and oil pressure reaches the heads much quicker. But another 4% of damage takes place before the engine warms to normal. So, keeping a 996 under 3,500 rpm when cold is a tremendously good idea. God job.
Just found your channel, watched the vid and subscribed. Loved this build. Thank you.
This was actually such a good video, I barely know anything besides engines and this taught me a lot.
Good video. I learned that not all Porsche cars are air cooled. Oh, and I agree with teh use of zip ties for the holding the splash shield. Did that on my '99 Lexus SC.
Fernando! Carnal! Es la primera vez que te veo trabajar! Felicidades! 🎉
First video I see on your channel. Nicely done in one video! Love your optimism!
Awesome video. Everything completed in one upload! Filmed over presumably a few months, not rushing to get 'part one' out. A MD local too! Subbed.
Good content Lee. I have to agree with some of the other posters, it's a better looking Porsche than many of the late model ones. Perfect car for a beginner Porsche owner.
I’m shocked that you got that for 6K
10k wheels on a 10k car is just proper baller!
I had the same coolant pipe issue with my 2000 C2. Porsche only sells the lower hose that fits the later pipe, so you have to change to the newer pipe when you replace the lower hose.
Love the video man. I have pretty much the exact same spec as this but clears. I went with a momo steering wheel and a custom gear knob. The wheels are dreams!
Awesome video, very entertaining! Great job super fun to watch. Thanks for posting :)
First time watcher. Great video. No fluff. Affordable car Achievable result.. Very watchable.
My 1990 Mazda Protégé horn did the exact same thing! Some foam rubber inside had broken down, causing the horn button contacts to come together. I had a tiny action figure shoved in the to keep it from thinking all the time until I fixed it. 😂
The 996.1 is a superb car! With a good exhaust one of the nicest sounding too. Other faster, more expensive cars have come and gone, including a 911 Turbo, but my 996.1 has stayed with me for over 12 years now 👌🏻 I've had almost no issues with it in that time, it's currently at about 130k miles and drives perfectly.
I love the 996 911. Unpopular opinion but i think that the 996.2 turbo is the best looking 911 ever.
In Australia, the cheapest 911 of that age is selling for around US$33,000, and a good one will run you nearly US$90,000.
The four rubber grommets in the frame behind the airbag are squished and need to be replaced to keep the horn from going off unintentionally. My 99 had the same issue. I bought a new frame with the grommets from Porsche.
I just replaced the rubber washers. Works fine now
Pretty common to throw zip ties on the shifter cables. Common issue that they can pop out of the holders and leave you with a non-shifting car
Yep, zip ties there are actually prudent
@ 7:25, When you pulled it in I noticed the right exhaust pipe spitting white smoke, that means bank 1 on the driver's side is the side with the issue of coolant leakage. Hence the gooey exhaust ports on bank1
Nasty. The Boxster and 996 marked the point when Porsches just became another VAG style product - a veneer of quality but not much else.
yup, built to lease
what the heck, you did this whole thing in one video, that's amazing.
Really enjoyed this video. I’m sure it took a lot of time but the effort was incredible and impressive.
Fantastic stuff! No matter where it came from, its heritage or whatever - man, that is a good-looking car!!
Another great video, thanks. I liked that we didn’t have to wait weeks (or months) between segments of the same build. So, what will you do with this car now?
just found this channel, and im definitely subscribing! well done and clean info. i like this a lot!
I love this model 911. Love the headlights, hope to find one of my own one day
I was drinking coffee while watching the oil mixture. It was the same color as what I was drinking.
Great Video! I really enjoyed watching it. You guys did good job and funny to watch.
Thank you for the porsche 911 I appreciate it Im driving it as my daily car now.
Nice work lads. Only thing I missed was a detailing showing what it can be.
I swear that at 27:32 starting it, it ALMOST...sounds like the beat to, Get Ready For This by 2 Unlimited, haha. Nice build. Cheers 🤘🤘
The best investment for the look ! drop it with the oem mag or same offset
I know many hate the 996 but I consider it a necessary step in the evolution of the 911 before the 997 chassis. I have a 2002 996.2 and with the 3.6 liter M96 rated at 320hp the car feels like it makes a touch more. On the scales it weighed in just under 2900 pounds, a smidge heavier than my Son’s VW Corrado SLC. I’m happy to see you saved it without swapping in an LS. I know it’s not cheap to save these cars. But I love the character of the M96. I love the brute force torque delivery of the LS - (I also own a 2000’ Pontiac FireHawk Trans-Am) but I think the M96 is a great little motor when the idiotic engineering choices are fixed on it. The later model M96 doesn’t allow you to replace the ims the way it is on the 98’ to 04’ versions, no thanks to the lip in the case, but those 05’+ engines aren’t known for having those issues. Popping the seal on the ims was the right thing to do. The only issues the 05’ + engines have is bore score which is less catastrophic in that you can still use the engine case, just needs sleeves. I sub’d you guys did a great job man, and after a. I’ve detail you’ll have a great daily. These cars are awesome for daily use.
Subs to watch ratio is CLEEEEEAN! Congrats yall. Keep making monster content!
One of my dream cars!! You guys are living the dream!!!
As you drove it into the shop I immediately saw it - smoke out the right exhaust (so, left bank of cylinders). I know because mine did the exact same thing. Such a great car - pity Porsche just got the engine so wrong. I wish somebody produced this exact same car nowdays, just with a bulletproof engine.
Should've K20 or K24 swapped it. Tuning by Nick seems to be coming out with a Good all you need kit.
Fantastic ,love this year of porsche 🎉🎉
really loves this series, imagine fixing a porsche at a reasonable price to enjoy the drive.
This just proves that It takes more than an interesting car to make a good KZhead video.
Enjoyed watching this as a Porsche enthusiast. Great video and channel. Subbed.
You should reline the seat centers in pepita! 😍 That will really break up the tan with black interior.
any used sports car == plan on taking engine out also, if there's a problem, it's always the most expensive option
Cool car and good vid. Although I feel you guys missed a trick if you had a mezger sitting about from a Cup car. You could have made yourself a 996 GT3 Touring!
Prefer the standard wheels
solid video.. great story, well filmed
This is awesome bro! You just gained another subscriber!!
not being a Porsche guy (MOPAR head all the way) i gotta say... that was a cool video! i've never personally dropped a rear motor ever... so watching (basically) how easy it is... VS lifting a front engine up n out... damn! :O that's 'easy'! :O call it a win? bout all i could suggest is do a BlueBook search on the same car, model year etc., 100% perfect buy and drive... if your $14k beats those BB list prices? not including you guys' labor... or those neat new tools you bought... because as any gearhead or shadetree will tell you... SOMETIMES a one off 'i need this tool for JUST this one project' SOMETIMES bites ya in the butt! and SOMETIMES you'll use that one tool two or even more times... so if you guys ever use those neat new tools at least three more times... write em off as an INVESTMENT for the future... then the new tires... oh you forgot to fix that sunroof switch... so if you guy's $14k (and a few extras) beats anything else 100% perfect online? definite win! thanks again for the cool and entertaining video! :D
I'm commenting while watching @18:00. I don't know your area, I don't know Porsche engines that well, but I do know enough about milling heads, grinding valve seats, resleeving and honing cylinders. I somehow can't shake the feeling you could have gotten resleeving done for about $1000 USD. Maybe you should look for shops out of your state, maybe you should consider getting a mill and a few courses and have this capability in house, which is also a potential revenue source. It's not rocket science, trust me, I do have a PhD but it's in growing plants, I'm entirely self taught in machining.
Beautiful 996 orange eyes, turn to live 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👍🏻good job!!!
