I've always been afraid of stair like that cause I might catch my foot and fall, or you slip and go halfway through the step and you're stuck. It's like a fear of escalators, like you're somehow going to get caught.
My homes staircase is a spiral staircase with gaps between the stairs and on the sides, so when my friend came over for the first time she was terrified to use our stairs lol
My outside stairs to the deck, just a short staircase, are like that. It's pretty common for outdoors. But just the other day, my Yorkie miscalculated, shot through the gap and went under the stairs. Luckily he was only on the second step, or it might have hurt worse. 😅

Honestly those fire places look horrible everywhere. If the marble was cut differently and had areas supporting it to look nice it'd probably look amazing. Marble also look nicer in real time if it is reflective or well detailed.

That is exactly what they're for. We may see an empty shell of a house, but in LA, that openness can be refreshing when your having 30 adults over. And it's very likely many guests are strangers to the host, so you don't wanna fill your home with sentimental nick-knacks that could get misplaced or broken.
