  • I can't help thinking that there must be an entrance inside one of the rooms. What would be the point of tunnels if you have to go outside to enter them when anyone can watch you?? I think they must be hidden behind some panelling or false wall. Many years ago, I used to work at Beaulieu Palace house in the New Forest. There is a secret door in the dining room, down to the old kitchens underground. I think yours could be behind a really thick wall, or unexplained thickness near a chimney breast. If you have any plans of the chateau, it might give you an idea of where to start looking. You could knock on a few walls for a hollow sound.

  • Phil, for your own safety you should shore up the sides of the trench to prevent a cave in - I’m not an expert but there is plenty of internet information on different methods to do this.

  • I hope you can get into the tunnels. As you have said in a previous vlog, part of the building has major cracks that are an indication of subsidence of the corner of the chateau. If you can reach that area under the house via tunnels, hopefully you will find the answers you need. Phil please be careful, water moves fast.

  • You could drill a hole in the block walls in the basement that seem to be blocking a passage way, and investigate with the bore scope. It might give you some indication of the condition and scope of the works.

    • No sadly they aren’t in the basement they are elsewhere on the grounds or that’s the first thing we would have tried. We don’t have any basements

    • I thought the same thing, you have to know that there is a reason it was sealed off. Easier access then tearing up your garden. I thought I saw the faint outline of the mason blocks!?

    • @@loraoflahrity130 the question should be, did they have a reason, but rather WHAT was the reason. Quite often, it's a simple reason of liability. "IF someone enters the tunnel and IF there is an accident, we will be blamed, so brick it up then it's not our fault. "

  • Phil, you should always cover a hole with a tarp if you can't finish excavating the same day. The other thing I wanted to say is, maybe there's a reason why the tunnels were covered. Perhaps there was a leak from the mote into those tunnels and now maybe you have exposed the water leak, that's something to consider. Why would they have covered it if there was nothing wrong ?

  • Hi Phillip- love your Chateau and the grounds set up. Beautiful- Would suggest when digging your tunnel -you might want to set up safety blocks so you don't have accidental cave ins. That is what I would worry about though. Years ago had a neighbor finding an abandoned cave near their house . of course they blocked it off so the kids don't go down there.

  • Make sure to shore up the walls and ensure every 4 ft you go down you need to have a 2ft step back to ensure it does not collapse. this is especially true with as much ground water you have. I would Elongate your trench and make a small ramp for the excavator so that it is also not putting pressure on the back of the dig area and ensures a safe area for the digger too.

  • It would not surprise me if that tunnel is found to act as a drain when you finally get down to the bottom. Secondly, if there is a large void beyond the arch, then you need to find out what your ground floor is resting on and whether or not those beams are rotten.

  • Just found the channel. You got a new sub ! It reminds me of my youth , working in a stately home in kildare Ireland. It too had tunnels running underneath it to the basement from a servants village and stables . We use to bring heating and plumbing supplies and tools in that way .I can't remember the length, but it was a good 5 minute walk and it had sky lights that let light in from above. It was the same tunnel that burglars used to rob alot of expensive art .
