The Z9 offers a multitude of focusing options. For action like sports and wildlife, I find Hudson Henry's hybrid method to be the best I've tried so far.

Thanks for watching!
I moved from the D850 to the Z9 in January. My keeper rate for BIF has gone up exponentially with the improved AF and tracking. I too use AF Large to acquire, but as Mike commented, I also have used back-button focus for years. With the firmware 2.0 I now can toggle 3D on/off by assigning it to the F1 button. No need to continuously hold the button down to engage. Love this and love the Z9! Thanks for your video.
Thanks for the comment! I still haven't gone through all the 2.0 changes, but your idea is interesting. Is this using the Recall shooting functions, or some other new option?
@@KnightsandWeekends I use recall shooting functions (hold) and uncheck all options except 3D. Custom controls f2 assigned to function button f1.
Z9 to arrive any time now. I love seeing tips like this. D850 currently BTW.
Did you keep your D850? I cannot let it go! :) Have both the Z9 and D850. I'm addicted to the shutter and optical view finder.
@@petersuvara I sold my D850, but there are times I wish I hadn’t!
this is excellent
I love your idea of programming both shooter bottoms, but how is done?
Thanks, my Z9 is on its way and this was very helpful 👍
Glad it helped - other people sharing tips and suggestions has helped me, and I'm glad to be able to pass it on if I can.
Thank you! Very informative and entertaining... 👍👍😁😁
Thank you!
Very soothing and informative! Like it even better than your other channel 😃
Thanks, Vic! I wish I had way more time to give to both, but I plan to keep both going because it is enjoyable for me to produce the content.
D850 still in hand. Z9 any day now. Then most likely a longer wait for the Z 800 and Z 100-400 also on order. Thanks for the AF tips.
Thanks for watching, and hope you get the Z9 and lenses soon!
@@KnightsandWeekends You're welcome. I'm still enjoying the D850 and 200-500 F5.6. That lens is great for macro too. I use it with TCs and extension rings to get real close to bugs. :) But I've discovered the Z 100-400 has an amazing MFD of just 98cm. That's twice as good as the 200-500. Just frustrated that availability is difficult to obtain. The shop just can't predict when they will receive stock of either of my lenses on order. At least I do know the Z9 is expected this month.
Z9 , Z100-400 and TC2.0 in hand now. Just waiting for the 800pf and TC1.4. I had a wonderful experience with Wedgetail Eagles yesterday. Posted some pictures on the facebook page. I'm loving it. But can't wait for the Z800 F6.3. Shooting at F13 or more is noisy. By the way, I haven't yet set up for tracking. Just been shooting single point AFC. I still got plenty of good shots of the eagles on the wing though. I'll give your suggestion a go.
Interesting. I'm still waiting on my Z9, but with my Z6II, I've been using this method for over a year now., with back-button focus. (But, with fewer function buttons on the Z6II, I use one of the function buttons on my lens to activate tracking. Works fine, since I'd have my left hand under any lens over 200mm anyway. So, on the 70-200, for example, I use the rear lens button as a toggle to zoom in/out, and the front button to activate 3D tracking.
I'm usually using larger telephotos on a tripod, and reaching a lens button quickly is not as practical for me. I also don't want to have to remember different ways to accomplish the task, so I like sticking with the body. But the great thing is that we do get the customization options, because none of us shoot exactly the same way.
I believe that Omar Gonzales guy or Ricci put out a vid on this a while ago also. Not taking anything away from H.H. , I like his vids.
@@thomastuorto9929 Yeah, I don't know that he invented the concept, but was the first one I heard it from. I just don't want to talk about it as if I discovered it, and not give credit where it is due. Ricci often gives stellar advice, but I hadn't yet heard him mention this technique.
Any chance you can give step by step instructions on how to set this up? I just got my z9 and I'm a little overwhelmed!!
I can’t wait to get the z8. I’m going to try this method.
I really should do an update, since there have been some firmware releases that have impacted things (for the better). Also, I have the Z8 coming and plan to do a series of reviews with it.
Excellent video! Thanks. Still laughing about the guy late to work…parking lot spot….
Thanks!
Just curious, what were your af settings and blocked focus response settings
At this time, I was using Wide Area Large with Animal detect, and I believe my blocked focus settings were set to around 2.
Try these techniques against a wooded background where the twigs are all the same colors and shades as the bird and it’s another story.
Oh, don't I know it! But, honestly that is going to be the case for any system, otherwise we would all buy whatever camera magically deals with it. Maybe I'll do a short video on my technique when I'm faced with that situation (which is frequent). I'd love to hear others' techniques too!
