Kyle dake also had the tornado headgear
I just don't wanna warm up before my match
Fanco Wrestling I wrestle with ankle socks
A baggy singlet the doesn't fit. I did this one time when I accidentally grab my older brothers singlet to go to a tournament. i woke up late and had bed head. people thought I was a clown. I won the tournament down in delaware
What if you can wrestle in two different stances wouldn’t that be a good thing to have double knee pads
The number one sign of a newbie wrestler is a wrestler that makes KZhead videos about other wrestlers outfits
Bruh I'm not kidding. These boys are such bogus
Y’all probably do all these things don’t y’all
They suck it’s about skill not strength and style
I remembered wrestling 🤼♀️ when I was getting pinned and I farted 🔥 so the guy released me and we were back up to the neutral position. I got 1 point escape
Tbh the tornado headgear one was the dumbest fucking point ever. They literally said it because of preference. Tbh most of their points were dumb af.
Not warming up is sketchy. They're either trash or a stud. No in between
U are correct
Frfr
I just stretch idk why i dont warm up
That's true because you have some guys who warm up in the hallway or mat room, and you don't even see their intense warmup.
Vic Viquor this comment literally has Me rolling right now
I always gave a weak handshake on purpose. I then got my takedown in the first 10 seconds because they would think I'm a wimp. It was my perfect mind game.
I did that at my jiu jitsu tournament. Took off all my stripes and made my opponent think I was weak, took em down in about 30 seconds lol
That’s genius I should start doing that
That’s actually smart ima use that
Same
I always do that
This is the complete wrong mindset to have. Assuming things in a match is how you lose. Wrestle every match the same and respect every opponent.
Jakob Gess bet u did
I feel like that is such valuable advice when doing anything, even outside and of wrestling and in other sports. Having a mindset of "everyone is a state champ" is the best mindset for wrestling
100% correct
Daniel Moucha what you said is mostly true but let’s say you walk out there and the dude you’re wrestling looks like he should be two weight classes below you and has no muscle definition. What would be the first thing that goes through your head?
@@Pat_inda_gym he is my opponent and I'm not putting in any less effort than I would with the state champ.
When they strip down to their singlet 10 matches before they're up
Lmfao yes
Lmao facts
I like doing this cuz I'm jacked. I pretty much wear my singlet whenever I can.
That’s my #1 sign
@@joekrapf8825 lol we believe you
Trying to shake hands in between periods
Gotta disagree with you guys on the headgear, preferred tornado headgear was able to hear better out of it.
@@WaxGroove sorry to tell you bud... You're a newbie
Headgear and double knee pads don’t matter jack shit on wrestling, the sport is about mental toughness not fashion
easymoneymorris lol I did that my first few matchs
Or after you go out of bounds
Wearing double knee pads is actually a smart strategy. Wearing only one telegraphs your dominant shooting leg. I've seen guys wear both, it's a preference I guess.
I do it and I've probably got around 400-500 successful shots cause no one knows which way I'm gonna go
When a guy doesn't wear any knee sleeves, get a look at his knees. If there's no hair watch your legs, he shoots both sides and isn't scared of mat burn. If there's hair, stay out of upper body, he's a thrower and isn't worried about mat burn at all.
Man, knees are just too important to not wear knee pads
Wouldnt they be able to tell which is the dominant since ur leading with it
@@adrishqipe depends since sometimes you switch which leg you lead with when you circle or something so if you switch which leg you lead with they won’t know
Two time state champion here. I always wore two knee sleeves to combat mat burn. I think you guys are worrying about looks too much. Most of the multi title winners did not look like your typical wrestling prototype. Jason Nolf looks like a noodle and he’s one of the baddest dudes to ever walk on a mat (3 NCAA titles).
Wow I just made a similar comment then read your comment to be elite you knock off that outter noise
And also it's not forget how many UFC fighters like will be Covington have the tattoo that they're talking about LOL
I wear two knee coverings(pad, sleeve). When you practice and drill both lead leg attacks it’s almost required.
So your telling me Jason Nolf is a noodle with that physique? Time to train weights harder.
@@kenyalmb I said he looks like a noodle. I’m built just like him. Thin and lean. He’s not stacked up like Suriano and burroughs. That’s all I was saying.
The guy who awkwardly stares at you from across the gym.
Devin Mccorkle Fr thinkin in his mind “ ima slam him and easily pin him”
That’s used to intimidate u
Intimidation
Lol my whole wrestling team used to do this but we were all good so it probably worked
Nah he just gay.
Fish handshakes are the best way to finesse your opponent tbh
I had the fish handshake, but was the most winning freshman on the team. I think we're all just trying not to come off rude, so we really really underdo the handshake. I think it's athlete thing, not peculiar to wrestling.
This one dude tickled my hand, made me mad
@@equinoxtremor1160 Lmao, I've been tickled on the handshake too! That shit caught me off guard for sure...
Padrino guilty of doing this throughout kids club wrestling all the way into high school. Along with asking kids how long they’ve wrestled in the bullpen in youth lmfao
Jonny AztcM lmao I tickled a dude in an exhibition match I was 150 but they didn’t have a 152 he was a 174 so I figured it’d throw him off and it did 😂
Sure sign of a newbie wrestler is worrying so much about how you look on the mat
I like the newbies that get horrible ass sweat.
lmfao!! I dunno ...both doing that and being aware of it happening sound just a teensie bit gay to me ...bro!

I always did the weak handshake. It's always nice to give someone a false sense of hope. It makes crushing their dreams that much better.
It really is that aspect of wrestling I loved the most.
No offense to you but if some kid did a week handshake on me I’m putting them in a cross face the first chance I get
Merciless
@@grant5684 why a cross face tho
The handshake is meant to be a sign of respect, not sizing them up by their grip strength.
His stance says a lot about him. And what he's doing right before his match.
So damn true. I'm currently working on my own stance. Trying be more explosive in the first round.

As a college wrestler you gotta know alot of this stuff matters NONE😂
Damn straight, some studs look like complete puds in college
Cause at the collegiate level especially Division 1 you’d be a fool to think ANYONE at that level is soft or newbie.
U would have thought ben askren was horrible by looking at him
True, but he's a total stud. Looks can be deceiving sometimes!

None of this matters in the long run. Never underestimate your opponent. Some months ago I was in a high school wrestling tournament, and, even though I was holding up, the guy was slightly better than me. During the second period, after a short scramble, he put me on my back, but I managed to roll him over to his back, immediately after he did that too, but the momentum helped me roll him on his back, I ran my feet towards his head, and I secured the pin, almost out of the mat
" Im gonna blast double this kid into another dimension" Im dead hahahaha thats hilarious!
Seattle Vegan Cyclist Ⓥ I swear to god as soon as I saw this they said this

I hope some of the real great wresters out there watch this video and start wearing the newbie stuff and continue kicking the shit out everyone.

That’s the best part of these videos giving me ideas for Mental Comfusion if my opponent
#1 sign... he has on a loose/baggy singlet..
ATG721 great call
"I'm gonna bulk up in about a week so I got a larger size 😎"
I got leg ridden the hell out of kid once and lost 6 to 7 and all I needed was my fucking escape to go to overtime and he was in a baggy singlet
On my old team, we always treated the newbie wrestlers like Marine Corps recruits. Upon officially initiating them into the brotherhood, we educated them on wrestling etiquette and informal traditions.
Your team probably didn’t win very much
@@xxshazam6045 We were so so. Not great, not terrible.

Noobs don't cheer for their teammates
jimmy hayden nahhhh

We sit on the edge of the mat and cheer them on. You may be the one wrestlings but your teams the one that can give you that determining strenghth while you do it!!
You sound dumb. That’s the only thing they do
everyone should cheer their teammates, you’re not a dark mysterious anime character...
Me losing to a kid with double knee pads at nationals
shouldn't really judge your opponents, doesn't matter what their doing lmao
I wish I knew this when I was wrestling in the 70's. I would do those things on purpose. Just to get into the other guy's head. They sounded like the valley girls from the 80's.
It’s a natural reaction to judge
Expect every match to be challenging and required for you to not hold back in order to win
Pipking gaming 1 ya good point
You can't always tell if they have been wrestling for 1 year or 6 years, until you wrestle
I know that from experience
No lie I had a teammate who was tall lanky pasty white had a bowl haircut always wore ankle socks and matflexs had the leg parts of his singlet pulled down and always wore a plain zip up jacket during warmups but he was a damn stud and spladled half the people he wrestled
Dang, he must have looked like a total newbie. All the power to him for being a stud!
Ben Askren Syndrome
Lanky guys and the spladle....
Pickle Nick tall people usually have an advantage because they can cradle and spladle easier
Lol... That same guy was on my team he was Kick-Ass at the spladle
You forgot about the original black and white Asics shoes 😂😂
Some kids that wear those are beast lmaoo
Yea man if u spend more than 70$ on shoes your stupid. Unless you dont rip through shoes as fast as I do, spending more than 70$ is dumb and the asics are comfy asf
@@stevendalling6977 I've always worn hand-me-down wrestling shoes from wrestlers that graduated... And I'm a State champ now.
i don’t see how shoes make a wrestler good or bad tbh
Good stretch, little warm up to conserve energy. I think it's all about the mental game as well. I wear a rainbow singlet with a Blue Smurf in the center. And I'm usually smiling before my match. I'll give him the fish hand in the handshake to throw him off. Then finish with the lateral and 7 Seconds.
The thought of a blue Smurf on a rainbow singlet is killing me
Tornado headgear with the football soft cup chinstrap ✋
You forgot MATFLEX SHOES!!!
N.H Thomas Gilman?
Didn’t wear matflex
Yes he did 😂
Jake McGowan wrong . He had a classic style that look similar but they weren’t matflex
Senior year he had the gray mat flex
In defense of double kneepads, some people (myself included) really do need them. I would shot leading with either leg and the issue wasn't the mat burn. The problem was the impact. I had chronic runner's knee for years before I even stepped on the mat, then after just the first month of practices I could shoot more than a handful of times without immense pain. While I could have just focused on one side during a match, that was a no-go during practice since we all had to drill with both legs.
I didnt have knee pads in wresling and i got mat burn in a match, it completly torn off my skin iv had thr scar for 2 years now
In middle school I once woke up five minutes before the match and still won
Ok? That isn’t a big deal. Also u were in middle school
Wearing just shorts/sweatpants over their STRAPPED UP singlet...I hate looking at that

Brandon Sorensen, as well.
So did David Taylor
Just did my first drunk wrestling match with my friend. I had no idea what i was doing so my strategy was just use strength to over power. It worked for a little bit but he had technique from experience, and the just got me in the end since I didn’t know what I was doing or what I was trying to do.
Most of these are not true, you just have to wrestle every match the same no matter how the kid looks
Kyle Dake rocked the tornadoes lol
And he looked a lil funny tbh
He's the only guy who will win 4 National titles in a Tornado headgear! 😂
J'den Cox, Ben Askren, and Isaiah Martinez wore tornadoes
I use a weak handshake to throw people off

ive done this multiple times😂😂
The Tornado is good for new wrestlers because of how well you can hear. I don't think you can beat it on it's audio reception capabilities.
I have new found respect for my coach for going through all the stuff you shouldn’t do. I would have done everything you just said if he had not.
Right when I was about to buy a second knee pad
Tom Rilley me too bruh
Go for it, throw people off and do what’s comfortable for you. Confidence and good mindset is key
I used to do a pad on the left knee and a sleeve on the right knee. Do whatever works for you.
I wish I wore double in hindsight. Especially for sweep singles. But, I didn’t cause I always thought it looked nerdy and I was all about that one white youth junior ASICS volleyball knee pad on the right knee and my Kendall cross adistars black or white. Or the black and orange zip up adidas. The first year they came out with the zip ups

My HS wrestling coach told me to shake with a weak grip at the beginning of the match all the time. I caught a lot of my opponents off guard. Tight grip afterwards win or lose.
I will admit that I do wear double knee pads but I started around 7th grade because at the time I also was A hockey goalie so I was on my knees up and down all the time and it just became a huge problem for me with the pain. Yes I know there’s a whole saying of power through it but the knee pads would prevent may burn, And kinda once I started I felt no reason to go back, I can wrestle without any past today and do occasionally but it always hurts a bit more after practice.

Thx for the tips I start wrestling tomorrow
I wrestled for four years and all four years i was 100% a newbie. I honestly enjoyed doing it and personally didn't car too much about winning. I didn't get a win until my second to last match and it was just becausr the guy i wrestled was even more of a newbie. I did like 3 of the things on this list. Ankle socks(not all the time but occasionally) singlet as low as i could although not ever lower than my knees and I didn't warm up too much i mean i would warm up before with my team and for a match or two before me but not much more than that. I can say i had a good handshake though

Remember guys these are only opinions
one you missed is; a wrestler that worries about how they look. A good wrestler doesn't care about socks or headgear or sizing up opponents on how they look. I had to ban kids from that sort of behavior when I coached. They would talk amongst themselves about who beat who and were always looking at the bracket to figure out who they might wrestle next. That s@*+ shouldn't matter.
you banned kids for being competitive.. nice
You sound like a prick on and off the matt
Member of the Tornado posse here 💪 More comfortable and you’re able to hear the coaches a lot better. Vito also rocks rocks them
what are you supposed to wear under singlet?
What is funny is these are all true most of the time. But if you know that, you can use this to play mind games with your opponents. I wore two knee pads, always. I would sometimes wear ankle socks, soccer socks, high socks, or no show socks. At tournaments I would rarely warm up.I would usually sit next to my opponent while they were warming up and I would try to look as disinterested in wrestling as humanly possible. I won the vast majority of my matches. They think you're trash until your first match, then after you trounce some known guy, you can only mess with newbs who you were going to brutalize anyway. You do this at one tournament and you become known, immediately. Especially if you consistently take home hardware.
Kyle Dake wore tornado headgear too I think he was also a double knee pad at times
Dake and IMAR kept the Tornado headgear sales above water! 💰
4:18 actually I yank my singlet all the way down to my knees and tbh it makes me feel more comfortable😂 but In all seriousness though this was my second year of wrestling in high school though ended the season 15-7 (10 of them were pins) so I hope I get a varsity spot for next year.
You knock on the double knee pad, but what about one compression sleeve and one knee pad? (I had to wear a sleeve on my left leg from injuries from other sports)
Watching this in 2019 when Stevan micic is #1 at 133 and where’s double knee pads
First off, double kneepads. I wrestled for 7 years and always wore them. I was ranked top 10 in western New York my senior year so I will have to disagree with this one. Also just throwing Michael K in there supports my argument. Good content tho guys much respect.
Ive not wrestled but jad judo jujitsu comps and it was the guys messn w there belts and gi all the time lol good stuff guys good work!
I used to yank my singlet down when I first started cause I was used to long basketball shorts since middle school. Then I actually just let it go high cause I saw my favorite Stanford wrestlers in hs wearing it high. The high look just started looking more badass. In terms of warm ups, I need my neck stretches at the very least, or else imma be sore af. I used asics headgear in hs. It was Velcro and cheap from big 5 but it wasn't the old school model. But it was comfortable for everyday practice. I needed double knee pads tho. I shoot with my left but also i tore my ACL on my right leg. Before surgery, it was there to defend my leg. After, it was there to hide the surgery scar cause any injuries are green lights for dirty wrestlers.
My brother Ed, who wrestled for Canon Mac in the 60s, would give the fish handshake once or twice a season to an opponent he never saw before. He would act wimpy, then hit the guy with a blast double when the whistle blew. The surprised look on the opponent was always comical. So beware - the newbie action may be a psych job. good stuff guys
🤣 That's hilarious. Mind games are huge in wrestling. We had a guy on our team who shook hands with his left hand to throw guys off. And it worked. Btw, Brendan and I both wrestled for Canon-McMillan, so it's great to have you watching. Thanks for the support!
Ima try both of these now
That was my M.O. as well. At weigh-ins, roll my shoulders forward to look like I had a sunken chest and a wimpy handshake before the whistle, then light em up. It works until everyone knows who you are.
@@michaelwernett504 Right, once they experienced it, you couldn't do it again to the same guy. My brother Ed also did the sunken chest - weak handshake and coughed. Funny - you two thought alike.

i’m going into freshman year and i’m thinking about wrestling does anybody have any tips that could help me become decent?
I know this video is 2-3 years old at this point, but I LOVE this topic. The "Weak Handshake", at least for me, was always a tell tale sign that you're about to destroy this kid standing in front of you. I remember I shook one kids hand my 8th grade season and almost literally crushed it. BUT, I do have one disagreement with you're list. The "Double Knee Pads" I was a double knee pads guy, Jr High all the through my Senior season of high school. Now I wasn't a State Place Winner caliber wrestler, but I wasn't a push over by no means and I rocked the double knee pads basically because they kept my knees from getting mat burn and I felt I was able to slide into my double and single leg attempts more quickly and smoothly. I never thought wearing double knee pads made a guy look goofy, but maybe when my back was turned everyone was pointing and laughing 😂, who knows. Great video and topic guys!
