Muffler MOD for w212 e63. PERFECT AMG SOUND! DIY

The goal was to increase the volume, yet maintain the original "AMG" sound.
Take a little work, but I'm happy with the results!
Comment below!
Also show how to remove the rear exhaust from a w212 Mercedes
Goal. Increase volume without changing sound/tone or looks
Tools, Just an Ev12 socket(or 12pt), sawsaw and a welder
Time, 2-4 hours.
Cost: $18 for SS butt-end exhaust clamps, link: amzn.to/3mKYp1T
Outcome. Its hard to tell from the video, but there is a noticeable increase in sound. specifically on cold start up, low revs and WOT. Its not dramatic but that isn't necessarily a bad thing, this isn't an 3rd gen Camaro lol. To my personal taste, its about 50% of the volume increase I was looking for. I will likely address the resonator later. I think its unrealistic to get crazy sound without addressing the catted downpipes as well
One thing I came to the realization of is, compared to other exhaust (example, the w211 e55), there is very little attempt by MB to deaden or absorb sound in the factory system. SO pulling random numbers for illustration, a stock e55 exhaust only allows ~15% of the sound potential out, so gutting will provide a huge increase. In the contrast, the stock w212 e63 system already lets out ~80% of the available sound, so doing this mod gets you up to say... 90%.
The aftermarket alternative like EISENMANN, renntech, FI or capristo etc for $2500-$6500.
The other popular options are to delete the resonator or the mufflers, or both. These are very good options, but there are a few cons that made me pursue other options. Cosmetically, You're at the mercy of to exhaust shop for the quality. Many of these I've seen will just use mild steel with crappy non-mandrel bends and even wrong size pipe. You cannot really DIY either unless you have a pipe bender. So this muffler mod method looks stock, its quite un-intrusive, reversible if needed. It also wont throw any flags if you need to take it to the dealer if that's a factor to any of you.
Its very popular among other car circles, such as corvette, bmw, w211 e55 and even ferrari guys.
There is possible more potential if you have time to do some R&D. You could try closing off that first Y that just dumps into the cavity or weld a pipe that goes from it to one of the tips etc. I have a feeling it is related to sound quality, so for now I left it.
My future plan is to cut open the top of the resonator and do something similar to to. However, since clamps wont fit, I will just cut a 3" pipe in half and weld it to the outside of the internal perforated pipe and close it back up. Someday i may get downpipes and at that point I dont want it too-loud either. so I may not touch the resonator

  • I really commend your creativity here most people would run from doing anything experimental to a mercedes. It seems like the amg uses a turbo style muffler I wonder if the Y that goes into the main muffler body gets sucked back through the perforations and exits back out the tips. I am trying to figure out what to do with my m273 engine (5.5l na) which actually has more of an american muscle sound when I remove stuff. I wanted to get something more similar to the amg sound that is more raspy/crackly but still manages to be deep and not obnoxious... also as you say has more of a tame idle tone which I like.

    @Dnasty1@Dnasty1 Жыл бұрын
    • I considered that, but that fiberglass mat was thick and the holes so tiny. There is no flow IMO. I think the Y either allows some reverberation or absorbs a pop? I really don't know, so that why I just removed the think I knew absorbed sound. In my new one, I'm going to do the same mid, but to the resonator and see how it sounds

    @TristanMac65@TristanMac652 жыл бұрын
    • The fiberglass is sound deadening. Sound waves are reverberating in the pipes until they get to the perforations, the sound escapes and is quieted by the fiberglass matting. Removing the fiberglass would kind of make an equity sound, putting the clamp on it basically negates the preparations, essentially making a straight pipe

    • It's hard to say exactly, again I'm going to muffler expert I'm just making educated guesses, I believe the sound exits through the perforations and is absorbed by the fiberglass. Simply removing the fiberglass would allow the sound to kind of echo inside the muffler can. Closing the holes likely gives a different tone. Overall it was pretty subtle

The path of the exhaust in the e55 mufflers is almost comical, it does like 6 180s. But, do I want it a little bit louder than it is after this mod? Sure. So I will a likely continue with a couple more procedures to achieve that. I also did not want to hack up the stock system and weld on some ghetto rust mild steel pipes among other reasons. I also put more weight on tone than volume. Either way, I'm never seeing anyone do this before to this car, so now we know what it does

      @ExoticCarDIY@ExoticCarDIY3 жыл бұрын
    • @@ExoticCarDIY Yes, I love these videos, I always wanted to see what's inside an AMG muffler as they spend a lot of money on exhaust sound development. But I still don't think muffler delete will make the exhaust sound like Camaro, 5.5 has very deep rumble and turbo whistle, so just deleting muffler will give you deeper tone on high rev's and nice burble on low rpm. Look at new AMG exhaust's, they all have valves that opens mufflers to straight pipes, yes the muffler's still exist, but they damp a lot of sound and when you open valves it's basically becomes muffler delete. Look up on youtube I think some guy called Matty125 or something did just a muffler delete and it sounded awesome. C63 6.2 was the one that had very good back boxes and made the AMG sound unique, but it was naturally aspirated. In your case I would have closed the Y-pipe inside the muffler or made the pipe a little more restrictive and opened a little bit more the area where straight pipe goes, it would be quite similar to what new c63s exhaust looks like inside. But anyway, looking forward to an upgrade/update on E63 as I find exhaust's to be very interesting.

    @carlosp8204@carlosp82042 жыл бұрын
    • To seal up the perforations on the pipe. That's typically the way a muffler works, sound waves go through the holes in that pipe and get absorbed into a fiberglass material. By putting a clamp over the perforations, you are essentially creating a straight pipe where no sound can get absorbed. This is a popular mod in a lot of different cars, you can also weld a pipe in its place, or actually weld up each individual hole. I prefer the clamp since it's removable and easy If I was to do it again, I would experiment with capping off that smaller pipe that dumps into the muffler. I have a hunch that that may add a bit more sound

  • These cars are pretty good for $35-55k but a 2017+ M550i xdrive will equal the pre 2018 63 AMG cars in 0-60 and even 0-80. So for about similar $ one can have a M550xi, less $ to maintain, no air suspension, lighter by 400 lbs and 500-523 hp stock with 0-60 in 3.6 sec. And a simple tune will put it to 625-660 hp and destroy any modded pre-2018 AMG 63 car's.

    • Its just amazing that BMW's M-package cars and suvs are just destroying real AMG vehicles. Never thought I'd see the day non-M car's/suv's could beat a real AMG. No need for a real "M", when a non M will do the job. And real AMG's are the 63 models. Genuine AMG product are built in Affaulterbach. No place else.

And with a "tune" is not fair unless both are tuned... Which in that case puts there e63 in the low 10s. Either way, I'm not partial to any car, not an I selling anything. Thanks for the comment
