The Kate Middleton conspiracies prove Britain's addiction to the monarchy is in crisis.

The British royal family was in crisis even before Queen Elizabeth II died, and King Charles III and the Princess of Wales both became ill with cancer. The public reaction to Kate Middleton's cancer news and the conspiracies surrounding her absence demonstrate our perverse relationship to royalty.
"We are torturing them with our attention," says Tanya Gold, author of the New Statesman cover story "The Fragile Crown". She joins Chris Stone on the New Statesman podcast.

  • Was Queen Elizabeth II really perfect?? Or did she turn a blind eye all too often, I wonder?

    • As monarch, she could have ended all of the rivalries, but instead chose to turn a blind eye and allow the foolishness to exacerbate. She was a passive leader in name only.

    • The country and the world weren't in a good place when she passed away - the former wasn't entirely her fault and the latter was beyond her control - but it's become increasingly clear over the past 19 months that she didn't prepare her beloved 'Firm' very well at all for coping after her demise. So no, of course she wasn't perfect.

He was told by WIlliam and the two other kids that if he didn't get in the car and go now, they would start shooting at him right there. That's how twisted it was. You also need to go back regarding the timeline for Diana and read/hear Diana's comments LONG before the Bashir interview. She felt she was being "watched" -- which was correct as we now know from the phone-hacking, tracking, blagging--not to mention the "men in gray suits" that has come to light. However, at the time, she was labeled as "paranoid" to discredit her valid-- and eventually lethal-- concerns.

    • There is much more to that story then the public could possibly imagine. Please do not believe all from especially Meghan and Harry. They are far from innocent in their methods and intentions. Many around Diana understood other secrets that ought to have not been covered up to such extremes and for history to repeat - not for Meghan but for another whom Meghan had serious stalking, bullying, and harassing patterns since childhood. They remained sticking to old patterns of dark methods to maintain their gains and fraud whilst rebranding and hoping to win interest through machine that they have both always abused. Most of what does resonate with public is actually being sourced from supply that has been trauma bonded and manipulated in the highest ways imaginable.

  • Well articulated analysis of what I've thought for years... I once met the Duke of Edinburgh (Philip), on our school playing field. (We were doing a "Duke of Edinburgh Awards thingamajig") He only showed interest in the prettiest female of our particular group. (I guess he was 50 plus, as it was around 1978, whilst our particular group were around 15 at the time). I assume the "alleged" misdeeds of his second son were inherited from his own "alleged" partiality for young "nymphs", learnt from his uncle, Louis Mountbatten. The list goes on... I've always been skeptical of an institution that requires that we are referred to as "subjects". These people are just as human as the rest of us [and] often are no better, living off wealth and privilege. It's about time the monarchy was "put out to pasture". Unfortunately, like Tanya Gold suggests, it's going to take a real crisis before the British public wakes up to the reality. As for Harry, I think she's right in saying he showed courage in publicly holding their collective feet to the fire! I haven't read "Spare", however. I don't think there's anyone I could hate more than Piers Morgan who is apparently on a sycophantic "royalist" crusade to bash the "Sussexes", so I'll always be on Harry's side, even if that doesn't make me popular with the majority of "Union Jack" wavers. It may explain that I've chosen to live in Kenya (and don't really relish the thought of moving back to the UK right now).

  • The essayist appears not to know how the title thing works. Under the British system, titles are passed down through the male line, not the female (exception being a Queen). Therefore, it's not the case that Margaret's children have no title because of her intervention. Upon their marriage, her husband was offered an earldom, and he took it, so her children are titled. Her son is the Earl of Snowdon, and her daughter is Lady Sarah. In the case of Princess Anne, her husband was offered a title upon their marriage, but he declined it. So, because he is untitled, there were no titles to convey to his children. This is the reason why Anne's children are untitled.

Meghan represented a new era - modernity - and would have happily played the role of the celebrity royal. The other family members seem stilted and old fashioned in comparison and no one under the age of 30-ish has any reason - or desire - to invest in them. Without Meghan, the royal family is facing (barely) managed decline and the point of obsolescence could materialise far sooner than many imagine.

  • There's certainly been a huge change in dynamic since the queen's death, although Elizabeth had no choice about becoming queen she embraced it to the hilt. The 1950's was a time when most women's ambitions were quashed and they had to return to the kitchen and go back to being housewives after the relative freedoms and opportunities during WW2. Elizabeth jumped at the chance to have a career and travel the world, becoming queen gave her an enormous amount of freedom for the time. For prince Charles the opposite was true, he's spent most of his adult life in the queen's shadow. By all accounts he had a miserable childhood spent mostly in boarding schools, he was then forced into military service which he hated and while his contemporaries went off and forged their own careers he knew he had no choice in the matter. So for Charles royalty has been a straight jacket and we had glimpses of his frustration with the whole palaver during the coronation. Whether the royal family survives beyond William and Kate is hard to say, it does feel increasingly irrelevant especially to younger people. The whole situation with "photoshop gate" also gave Wills and Kate a taste of how quickly the media can turn nasty, it'll definitely leave a bad taste in the mouth and like Harry, they could well decide one day, it isn't worth the hassle..

I believe that a lot happens in their lives and that they are more worried about presenting the Royals as perfect rather than real. I have seen Princess Catherine appearing so tired sometimes and I have commented On that and said she’s got 3 children as well. Family first and Royal first both are impossible. Sell the diamonds and solve hunger, homelessness, drug rehabs , aftercare, day care and take care of the poverty in Africa, Jamaica etc… I’m happy that King Charles is trying to modernize the Royals and have less waste. But history repeats itself and it has.

It is unlikely, human nature being what it is, that we will ever have enough homes, drug therapy or money to solve poverty either here or abroad. Obviously we should try but the solutions have to be more than a quick fix. I could stand near a motorway and view hundreds of expensive vehicles and pass many huge expensive homes and know that British money is not evenly distributed but it will take all of us, not just the royal family, to solve it. He said that those 2 elements refusal to allow the royal family to change will be its undoing. All things change, hopefully for the better. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with tradition. However, when it stalls progress because people want to definitively look backward and live in an age that no longer benefits society or its people, then some things has to change. The tabloid media controls the royal family and what people think of them and thats dangerous. For the society and more so for the royals themselves. It benefits the sadistic elements of the media. Do you realise that for the last couple of years the total cost of the monarchy to the taxpayer is £1.29 per head (despite a huge jubilee celebration and a state funeral)… excellent value for the diplomatic roles they fill, the cohesion they provide by being non political; and one comment here says ‘we should elect our head of state’ - does that person not realise that the voters elect the government which makes all the decisions on governance? The monarchy nonetheless has much to offer the current Prime Minister because the interactions between the monarch and the PM have existed for so long that they have much wisdom to impart.

The income from the estates eg Cornwall for the Prince of Wales and Lancaster for the Monarch reduce the amount of the civil list grant. What we need is a largely ceremonial Presidency that plays a similar role to the King today but democratically elected, cheaper, more accountable, and able to call the Prime Minister and Government out on the most undemocratic moves and even veto them if they are deemed to be undemocratic or unconstitutional.
