Life is NOT a Journey - Alan Watts

Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 - 16 November 1973) was a British philosopher, writer, and speaker, best known as an interpreter and populariser of Eastern philosophy for a Western audience. His philosophies seem to transcend ego, politics and limitations. His monologues have a powerful way of connecting distant abstract ideas with the present moment and his words have a unique way of putting life into perspective. Life is a gift.

  • Life is usually not what job you have, what field you get into career-wise, how great your title becomes. Life is somewhere in between. The songs you sing, the runs you run, the kites you fly, the people you laugh with, the stories you hear, the tales you tell to inspire, the dreams you have at night, the pets you adopt, the plant you finally managed to keep alive, the dinner that finally tasted good, the feeling of hopefulness, of gratitude, of amazement. It happens in between.

An even more cosmic Beatle song can be found on the same album (Revolver) -- it's called "Tomorrow Never Knows": Turn off your mind, relax, and float down stream It is not dying, it is not dying Lay down all Thought, surrender to the Void It is shining, it is shining If you may see the meaning of within It is Being, it is Being That ignorance and hate they mourn the dead It is Believing, it is Believing That Love is all that Love is everyone This is knowing, this is knowing All plays the Game: "Existence" to the end Of the beginning, of the beginning, of the beginning... Or even "I Am The Walrus": I am He as you are He and you are me and we are all together. Even John Lennon backed off writing: I am Him as you are Him, and you are me...etc. I think "Elohim" originally meant "our Higher Selves"

But now I’m in my 30’s I’ve realised I don’t think I ever really wanted to travel i just said that because that’s what I thought success was. I just enjoy a simple homely life, it’s taken me all these years and videos like this for me to accept myself for exactly who I am and realise it’s okay to live a simple life. If you don’t travel or earn a lot of money like society says you have to now it’s okay, just do what ever you want to do, there is no race or competition. It’s still hard for me to remember this but I’m getting better and accepting myself more everyday ❤

I get my $500 a month and its not a lot but that's what I've got and I'm not chained to any monotonous profession... I'm free to explore my passions, though I'm limited by my body in many ways, and I can live my life moment by moment. I'm limited in where I can live and things I can afford by my income but money isn't the key to happiness or success. I'm counting my god damn blessings.

    • @@ancientgear7192 One can still do *some* other work, surely. I imagine it all becomes a matter of meeting such needs as they come. I'm 24, and I've lived a very happy life with not very much money or work experience at all. I've worked a job for maybe about two and a half years out of my life. But I've never mooched off of anyone, never made a disturbance of myself, just sort of 'met the needs as they came'. Odd jobs here and there, and a sense of 'if I don't absolutely need it I won't buy it.' Forsaking a car and even taking the bus for simply walking to where I'm going. More time to think. It's not for everyone. Nor is it commendable or merit-worthy or anything like that. I simply meet these things as they come and don't worry about it in the mean time. As soon as you start overplanning and overbudgeting and falling into the manic race of things, money and its uses can become a terrible cage. I went to university on the government's dime. I'm fifty grand in debt. It doesn't bother me remotely, because somehow, I'm still not starving to death.

Never do they stop to reflect on what this kind of parenting does to their kids. As was pointed out in schooloflife, this leads to an impression that love is no more deserved than the sum of ones achievements. They become desperate to please and impress others, and ultimately miserable when they don't recieve the admiration and love they feel that they have earned.

    • Life itself, yes, but one still does have to "make a living" do to food, clean water, elec, internet, shelter, etc not being free. The issue of learning how to survive or make a living is something that can be solved. From there, ethics would be introduced, as some ways which are illegal may be an easier way to make money, but they're sketchy. Or one may make great gains, but at the expense of others. Therein lies some of the complexities

    • Pttt! Don't make me laugh! It's not a movie, movies happen without your involvement. It's not popcorn, you can only eat so much popcorn before your tounge goes numb to the taste and your lips start to sting. Life is about.... whatever you want. Love, joy, peace, patience, all things good. Being disciplined. The options are all there, and You get to decide, and then take wonderful action to move the mountains around you. We all feel sorry for the man who wastes his life, or the people who die in vain. That's because life is valuable, to sit back and watch it like a movie is comparable to spilling the ingredients for your favorite Desert on the ground because you haven't baked it yet, and it doesn't taste the way you want it to.
