This is NOT your average house plant! Although it looks like or may even be a plant in your home, do NOT try an experiment such as this.
On today's episode, Coyote travels to Costa Rica to compare the effects of the Dumb Cane leaf, stalk, and stem when touched to his arm. Perhaps not surprisingly to some, he was also dumb enough to touch the stem to his tongue!
While Coyote's side effects in this video were mild, make no mistake, this plant can cause severe irritation, burning, and even death.
HUGE THANKS to the Bio Sur Foundation for leading this adventure at the Río Nuevo Nature Reserve. Their mission is to protect the endangered wildlife of Costa Rica by creating rainforest reserves through land acquisitions, environmental education of the local population, and engagement with national and international partners. It happens in the big toe because that's the farthest place from the heart so there's less blood flowing through it (or at least at a reduced speed rate) because the heart works harder to pump blood back up.

Pins and needles and numbness at most. Gaboon vipers, puff adders, bushmasters, or frankly anything that's either cytotoxic or haemotoxic, now that would make for an exciting video. Better yet, imagine he did it somewhere in rural Africa where the nearest clinic is an hour away. The venom of the large vipers don't reach anywhere near the potency of the inland taipan, but the pain would be through the roof, and chances of survival are actually more uncertain due to the workings of cytotoxins not being fully understood.

    • He strongly overexaggerated the risks and effects. The plant is an irritant, but that's about it. No chemical burns either, as the calcium oxalate (he called it oxide -.-) raphides cause purely mechanical damage. Even most people who got the plant into their mouth do not need serious medical help: An analgesic + antihistamine to keep down pain and inflammation at best. The raphides can probably be dissolved with citric acid/sulfamic acid solution.

    • I was just gonna say this. This is different than a sting or bite, this is basically directly hitting the tongue/throat. This type of stuff is way more dangerous imo.

    • Yeah. I actually wish he hadn't spared us the vomiting, because it's medically useful to know as much as possible about the reaction. Vomiting = loss of water, loss of nutrients, burning of the throat, more exhaustion, more risk of cardiac problems. It can in some cases be worse than the thing that caused it.

  • A possible antidote would be a mixture of dillute citrate + EDTA or dillute solution of sulfamic acid. Those should be able to dissolve the raphides in no time. Generally speaking though, the majority of people is just fine with a mild analgesic and an antihistamine.

    • Because he tells everybody that these stings are more risky and dangerous than they actually are. The statements about the raphides in this video are not only false (it's calcium oxalate, not oxide and the irritation is purely mechanical - no chemical burns), but his reaction is also very overexaggerated. His camera man is already fed up with all the acting.
