  • Pretty sure BMW wants those lug bolts installed dry. Anti seize will affect the clamping force once torqued to spec. That being said, I always applied anti seize to the rotor retaining screw since those were notorious for seizing. Torque on those was never really critical - they’re just for retaining the rotor while the wheel is off.

  • No brake lube? Torque specs on lug nuts and bolts are “dry torque” love the videos but be careful PN. I get its a nice short clip from home but people trust your info more than maybe just a “normal guy” at home in his shop. This kind of reminds me of all of the guys that say “I can do brakes, they are easy!” And completely overlook all of the important steps of doing a brake job. Are the sliders free? Is the piston boot torn? Is the bracket clean? Just my opinion.

    • My question is why didn't he crack the bleeder and just bleed out some of the old brake fluid. Simple brake flush why you have the brakes off. Brake fluid does break down with heat and time. Also not to mention all the back pressure you just sent up to the ABS system, will it ruin it......depends who you ask.

      @todo991@todo9914 жыл бұрын
    • @@todo991 you're more likely to break up bleeder valve doing that. And out of thousands of pushed back in virtually every make, never had an issue

      @potatojz38@potatojz384 жыл бұрын
    • @@todo991 should be okay to push the piston in. With the car off all passages in the ABS manifold should be open. It may differ on a car with a push button emergency/parking brake. Even vehicle with the "twist in" pistons I've never been presented with a problem. Just don't open the cap under the hood and you should be fine. The only time you should crack the bleeders is if you've added brake fluid to replace the small amount that "disappears" because of pad wear. If your master cylinder is full when your pads are freshly installed and pressurized then only flush as needed for driving style and weather conditions. More to keep condensation out over time.

  • When removing caliper brackett E18 bolts with a 12pt 14mm socket, use a large clamp to press the breaker bar and socket fast against the torx bolt, once it breaks loose (1/8 turn) remove clamp and remove bolt. Otherwise, you will damage the torx bolt when the socket backs away, and the socket spins on the bolt splines.

  • This answer is more than anything for those who have the same doubt; yes, you need to put the brakes in workshop mode to be able to work them without problem (if u have electronic parking brakes), with a scanner for bmw you can do it easily without the need or those famous applications. For mechanic and electromechanic just leave the parking brake loose to be able to take the rotor out and don't rip-off everything together like me. I had the same question for a long time and no one was willing to answer it. Good luck.

  • Why do German cars use wheel bolts instead of studs/nuts? Here in the States, only farm equipment use wheel bolts; the wheels can be a pain to install without an alignment bolt/pin. Also, what kind of anti-seize do you use? High-Temp Copper? Ultra High-Temp Nickel? Or basic Aluminum? Did you know that the aluminum anti-seize can react with the steel in the fasteners, causing galvanic corrosion (i.e., they weld/fuse together). It actually makes it MORE difficult to service later; it's actually easier to not put any anti-seize on, if you're using the basic aluminum stuff. I personally use copper for most everything; it's more stable, it WILL come apart easier in the future, and it handles much higher temperatures. It's also not all that much more, because a little anti-seize goes a long way. It's definitely worth it to use the more expensive copper than the aluminum anti-seize. Save the aluminum anti-seize for aluminum fasteners holding aluminum parts.

  • I'm not sure about the anti-seize on the threads. That would change the torque requirements for the lug bolts. IE, they will be easier to turn, so 90 ft-lbs of torque would cause more than the specified clamping force and bolt stretch. See this article from Tire Rack. Scroll down to near the bottom. www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=99&

    @russlavalle@russlavalle4 жыл бұрын
    • Russ LaValle I agree. If I’m not mistaken...it’s generally not recommended that anything grease, oil or anti-seize be applied on wheel stud threads. Not only might it effect the torque spec. More importantly, i think that lubed threads may tend to loosen
