I've seen a lot of videos pop up since my very first series on diy silicone mermaid tail. With more people trying out different methods there's a lot of mistakes that can be avoided for your own safety and to make the tails look better.
Today I'm gonna share with you some of the mistakes I've made and I've seen people make when making their own silicone mermaid tails.
I've only made 2 full mermaid tails but I went through a lot of sampling and experimenting with different methods and materials.
There's probably a lot more of these examples and some might be a bit obvious but I want to make sure you know these things before you start on your tail making journey.

  • 1. Silicone you use must be specifically SKIN safe, if it's not, don't use it 2. If you aren't willing to buy a quality and safe monofin, you aren't ready to make a silicone tail 3. A silicone tail should never be your first experience swimming in a tail, that's DANGEROUS

  • 5:22 very small correction, but if you're using it in *freshwater* there is no marine life there, marine means ocean specifically. "Aquatic life" would be a better substitution ^^ Thanks for the video! I appreciate it :D

  • I am going to start making my own resin/mythic mermaid tail this week. I am soo excited!!! It is going to coral pink and orange. It is inspirational by a anthias fish. I love your work and cant wait for rose quarts. You have inspired me to make my own mermaid tail! I might be a little young to make a mermaid tail but i have been doing research for months and i am going to make the tail a little bit big for me because i am probably only going to grow a little bit more. I love your work so much. Hopefully i can buy on for you pins to and pin it on my new mermaid tail!❤️❤️❤️🧜‍♀️🧜‍♀️🧜‍♀️🧜‍♀️🧜‍♀️

    • Sounds good ☺️ if you're making a resin scaled tail you can reuse the scales to make it bigger later on so make it in your size for now. If you make it too big it will be really hard to swim in. Remember to practice your dolphin kick with a monofin before you start on your tail as well 😉

    • PassionFruit DIY OMG THANK YOU FOR RESPONDING. And yes i have already swam in a mermaid tail. I have swam in a fabric fin fun tail since i was 5. I have always wanted to have a silicone mermaid tail and i hope one day i will have one. I also want to start my own mermaid business at one point in my life. Oh and thank you for the suggestion about how i can make my mermaid bigger when i grow i will definitely do that. I have also been in sewing classes for 3 years so i am pretty good with crafts and stuff like that. Thank you soo much. Love your vidoes sooo muchh❤️❤️

  • Can I ask regarding the silicone? I'm going to make a tail myself! Is it okay to use food grade silicone on a neoprene base? In a test it does stick to the fabric with some help from sil-poxy, but can't help but worry a bit 😅😅 Thanks a bunch!

  • I have never used silicone before. I am was just wanting to write out words on t-shirts,. What is the best way to wash it, so that it will stay on permanently?

    @Jillian1stJohn3-9-10@Jillian1stJohn3-9-103 жыл бұрын
    • Hand washing is always the best option for handmade things like that but if you use silicone on fabric it's really hard to wash it off. Of course I would make a sample shirt and wash it a few times on different settings to test the durability and make sure you're using aquarium safe silicone if you're going to be wearing it

  • I have a question regarding the rule saying one is not allowed to copy designs. I have problems in recognizing whether my case would be theft or inspiration: I am a big fan of the polish film "The Lure". This reinterpretation of Andersen's "The little Mermaid" has a pretty unique tail design. The tails look like that of eels or lampreys. I am dreaming of making my own eel like mermaid tails because of that film. But I am not sure if it would be theft, because like I said, the design is pretty unique. Can anyone tell me if it would be theft or inspiration?

    @sapphandranox@sapphandranox Жыл бұрын
    • I would probobly say inspiration, the original tail was inspired by an animal, the eel so I think it would be fine to take inspiration from the tail and the animal.

  • Planning on making my own tail at some point, is aqua/life safe silicone safe for skin? Is it the same as Dragon skin? I want to buy something that's 100% safe for my skin, but Dragon skin is so expensive does anyone know of a cheaper 100% skin safe option? Thanks to anyone willing to answer 😅

    @rachelrose4691@rachelrose46913 жыл бұрын
    • If you get aquarium safe silicone and use a fabric base for your tail (so it's not in direct contact with your skin) you're 100% safe. I'm going to make a vid about this soon but I recently spoke with a chemist who works for the silicone brand I used to make my second tail and they confirmed there is no risk for skin contact (and explained about different chemicals etc.) Especially if you have a fabric base. Clear aquarium safe silicone has different properties from dragon skin and there's a specific method to make tails with it (you can find all of the info in my videos).

  • re the monofin thing: I would ABSOLUTELY buy a premade monofin IF I had a shoe size that would fit the nicer, bigger fins (i.e. like the mahina). I have very large feet and despite being a cis woman, can only fit into men's options for monofins and sadly the men's monofin options kind of suck. I really want to be able to make my own DIY /sillicone/ monofin akin to my own custom mahina but I can't find any tutorials anywhere. Do you know of any tutorials for making a traditional silicone monofin at home?

    @archery411@archery4113 жыл бұрын
    • that must be annoying 😯 I'm currently working on making a silicone monofin but there's still some things I need to figure out but I will definitely post a video once I finish and test it out. Unfortunately I haven't seen it done yet. What about mertailor fantasea fins? Have you looked at their sizes by any chance?

  • On what you said about "stealing designs," I am not sure how that qualifies as stealing. As long as they are not selling the tail (which would be stealing an idea), they are not stealing as they are making something for themselves. People make stuff based on other people's stuff all the time, and as long as they are not selling it, they are not stealing.

  • Read the book called steal like an artist

    @ellymccarrell3475@ellymccarrell34752 ай бұрын
  • I don’t think the stealing designs is as big of a deal. Especially if your making it for you if the original tail is not affordable. Like Ariel’s tail, that’s a classic. If your a seller I can see the legality issues on copy cating tails, so I get that.

    @natashaorr1596@natashaorr15962 жыл бұрын
    • For sure, basic designs such as ones inspired by movies and popular characters are perfectly fine. It's more about intricate designs that are very unique and another artist spent a long time working on them and you decide to recreate them and claim as your own idea. If it's just a colour combination or a general idea but executed in your own way/style then that's fine :)
