Qui-Gon Jinn & Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Maul [4K HDR] - Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
Qui-Gon Jinn & Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Maul, or better known as the "Duel of the Fates" lightsaber battle, cut down into a single cohesive scene here and shown in 4K HDR.
A 4K HDR sample from my Extended Star Wars Episode I Cut, simply titled "The Phantom Menace - Extended Edition". As of today, both cuts have now been updated to a new 2.0 version, featuring several minor tweaks in audio, updates to the HDR color timing (especially for Episode I), tweaks to transitions, and brand new A.I. upscales of many of the deleted scenes. A total of 7 deleted scenes have been restored in the film.
Note: The trimmed down version of the duel of the fates battle is only for the youtube upload. The version scene in the film cut itself won't be intercut in this same way.
Both of my Extended Episode I and II cuts are available in both 4K HDR and 1080p SDR, along with my other edits like the 4.5 hour Revenge of the Sith - The Siege of Mandaore Supercut the, Star Wars Episode IV - The Rogue Cut, and many more!

Finally. A video where they show Maul’s intro before the fight. I think it’s important for the Sith Lord to have a little dramatic opening before the fight really begins. Thank you. I appreciate it very much.
Fr, i was looking for a vid with the intro because of how the door opens with duel of the fatesz
It's definitely a pinnacle moment that emphasizes Darth Maul's level and that only Qui Gon and Obi Wan are a match for him!

I think if the whole movie had been as good as this, Phantom Menace would've been the best Star Wars movie ever made.
Qui Gon was so underrated. He was an aggressive, strong attacker in this duel. Only his age worked against him.
Every jedi practiced all standard saber fighting forms, it's just that certain people excelled in specific categories above others. Qui gon valued life and knowledge of the force but common sense in this instant would dictate going against an agile dathomirian zabrak wielding an unorthodox weapon to be on the offensive and apply pressure, he was still a master and earned it through skill
Bro got bopped and instantly lost focus
@@user-mg7wh8zq6v I think thats a bit of short sighted take, if you're watching their body language there is a clear moment where Qui Gon is visible confused by Maul spinning his lightsaber Its a moment of hesitation Maul notices this and realized he's wary and unsure of which blade will hit next Its an opening he then exploits in an unorthodox way, a hilt bash to the head the exact opposite of what Qui Gon was being wary of. Its stupid but clever.

@@dihatzhs It shows the contrast between all three characters. Obi-wan is impetuous and impatient, Qui-gon is measured and controlled, and Darth Maul is like a jaguar toying with its prey!
Obi-wan is panicking, desperate to reach his Master and fight by his side. Maul is impatient- he wants to get back to the fight and test his power against the Jedi. Qui-Gon is accepting and at peace. He’s already come to terms with the fact this is his last battle- but at the same time, he’s resolved not to go down without giving the Sith all he’s got

This is the most quietest fight ever. Besides Obi-Wan screaming NOOOOO, there were no words said between all of these guys throughout the entire fight.
That's what made it good. None of these stupid cliches where the they have to get their cheesey lines in between duelling sets.
It's part of what makes it perfect. They both realize that Maul isn't an average enemy and treat him accordingly
Yes, because the opponents have no relation to each other whatsoever. Its just a final boss so the characters can hit each other with their glowsticks.
Yeah but listen to that score - absolutely brilliant.
@@JeremyMacDonald1973 the music really makes the entire fight, nobody would give it a second look without it
I love the silent mutual respect and meditative discipline they all have when they disrobe. No show boating, no mouthing off. They all just know what it is. Instant intuitive recognition of the power and formidability of one another. They're about to get down on that level.
They all know they about to run that fade
They were all business and while they saw each other as the enemy, both sides focused on their respective goals, each other's deaths. If this had been Dooku, he'd have talked a lot of smack as that's part of his arsenal but Maul at this point was simply about fighting and winning.
I love that silence, both know one of them is about to die. No laughs, no words, just focus to kill the other one.

My favorite scene in Starwars. Maul embraces this fight like no other character, patiently and methodically hunting his prey across the galaxy. When the gates open he is out numbered 30 to 1, with two Jedi to defeat. Maul wanted the fight, he wanted to beat both Jedi at once. Doesn’t say a word, just focuses his anger and energy into his sole purpose.

This duel still stands alone as a representation of the ancient conflict between the Sith and Jedi and what it would have looked like when the Sith were at the height of their power. Sidious is pure Sith, of course, but his fights are so full of special effects that it doesn't have the same effect. When I imagine duels from Knights of the Old Republic being translated to the big screen, I imagine them looking like this.

Qui-Gon has always been and probably always will be my favourite Jedi. Loved him since I was like 5 years old
He was the Jedi who got things figured out, in a time the Jedi philosophy was decaying, and making itself vulnerable to the return of the Sith. Had Qui Gon survived this fight, Anakin would have been spared from the dark side, and the Jedi would have been saved and reformed.
My favorite jedi master .
This is the kind of filmmaking Lucas brings that Disney can't. The ghostly/witchcraft sounds in the background before Qui Gon dies tells you that we're in the Sith's territory now and this moment will go their way.
Honestly, the thing i like most about this scene is the window into each of their personalities when trapped between the gates. Maul is impatiently pacing back and forth, eager to kill his prey like a predator. Qui Gon is tensely, but patiently meditating, to reserve his strength and focus. And finally Obi Wan, helplessly stuck behind, but alert and ready to reach and help his friend the very second the gates open. Not a single word of dialogue between them, and we learn so much about them by simply watching. It's such a small thing, but i massively appreciate little character moments like that.
My favorite scene in this fight
It's an easy detail to miss, but you're well rewarded for viewing
It’s also the first sign that Obi Wan is one of the strongest force users ever. The fact he knows the INSTANT the gates are gonna open, and lights his saber immediately before it occurs, while both Maul and Qui Gon are reactionary.

Yeah, now Lightsabers are just fancy baseball bats.
Sound design was amazing.
The sound design in these fights were incredible the sequels every blow sounds the same.
I like that Qui Gon meditates during the break but then attacks once it ends. This shows that he is balancing his mind, while maul is all aggression.
Yeah, and look where that got him. lol Maul, aka mr. “all aggression”, won the fight in case you didn’t notice.
@@sparrowprince3432 Likewise, look where it led Darth Maul his entire existence. Slavery, suffering, death, anger, hatred. He was a rabid attack dog that suffered not just before his defeat, but after it. Obi Wan, if anything, ended his suffering. Qui Gon, however, meditated, accepting in peace that if this was to be his end, it would be. And once it came, he would become one with the Force.
It has nothing to do with being at peace, it's a known technique called combat meditation that's supposed to give the user a temporary boost in their connection to the Force
The balls it takes to kick at someone during a lightsaber duel against two enemies and actually land it, twice is legendary

@@Aisatsana1971 agree. It has the magic of the OT. different aesthetic but same magic.
This scene always gets me, how Qui -Gon meditates and Darth maul paces back and forth, you can feel the hate towards Qui-Gon and he simply prepares for battle, still gets me today
I always wondered if Qui-Gon, during his meditation, foresaw that he would die. It would've been more epic if that were true because as soon as the shields disable, he doesn't cowardly run away, but he charges right at Maul and fights courageously.
The music for these scenes is so important, John Williams is a genius. He created a master piece for these moments, two religions, two enemies fighting again after a 1000 years… magnificent
If this movie came out today, it would be nominated for best cinematography awards. Modern movies have lost those static and deliberate camera shots in favor of frenetic shakiness. I mean it’s by far the most important duel, it literally decided the fate of Anakin. If Maul had succeeded, he would have killed Padme, Anakin, and who knows who else.
And if Qui-Gon had won, Anakin’s fate would have been much different because Obi-Wan would not have been the mentor.
Well let's see: Anakin was up in space and would still have destroyed the control ship The droid army would still have been wiped out. But Maul probably would have killed Padme and the rest of the naboo leaders. So I guess it comes down to whether or not he Trade Federation would recover from that and come back to wipe out the Gungans (probably would). Anakin would likely get taken prisoner and Sidious immediately takes him as an apprentice, rather than "watching his career with great interest."
Not really. According to the Darth Plageius book, Anakin force presence is felt prior to the movie begin. So Plageius wanted the boy first before the Jedi Order could get to him. He had Sidious to send Maul to find the boy. So overall, Sidious and Darth Plageius wanted the boy. The Princess would of been killed or used as wager for trade routes or something along those lines.
