  • You notice Sidious' sabers' activation sounds at the start of the fight? The one in his right hand uses the same sound it did in ROTS when he fought Windu, and the one in his left hand used the one when he activated it against Yoda. It's implied he was using his spare against Yoda since his primary saber fell out the window during his fight with Windu. I love little details like this.

  • For Maul and Savage, this was the most brutal and close-to-death battle in their lives, a test of survival, when no matter how powerful of a duo they become, even Maul is visibly fearful knowing the abilities of their enemy as soon as he enters the room. For Palpatine, this was a Tuesday night

  • 0:36 - 0:50 Note how Sidious uses the Force-choke here. He's strong enough that he could've killed them immediately by crushing their windpipes or snapping their necks. But instead he does a slowly tightening one, that draws out their suffering before killing them. Nice little touch from the writers or animators to show just how sadistic Sidious is.

    • @@connorhodge23yes they can if they’re significantly stronger than their opponents. Sidious force chokes anakin in a force vision fight between him, Yoda and anakin in the clone wars. Also, Sidious chokes Dooku on a hologram from Half way across the galaxy in the clone wars too. If the person using the force is a lot stronger than who they’re using it on then they can easily break their force shield and ragdoll them, as seen in this fight when Sidious easily manhandles Maul and savage with the force.

    • God, that movie was so painful -_- Also, one of the best parts about Maul as a character is how we learn that the Jedi weren’t the only ones being manipulated by the Sith and the Dark Side. Maul, an ex-apprentice of Sidious, was just as much of a victim of the Sith and Dark Side as others

    • @Irfan Alddin General Grievous isn't considered a Sith Lord, he was trained by Dooku but he's not one who can even use the force. Although he fights with lightsabers he's not actual Sith, he just works with them.

    • @Irfan Alddin I have to disagree. Sith Lord is just a term used to refer to dark side force users, or force users who followed Sith tradition. The title of a Sith Lord is Darth, and Dooku and Vader were both crowned Darth, while General Grievous, being a non-force user, cannot be a sith lord. Maul was a sith lord as Palps gave him the title, Darth Maul.

  • One detail at the end not many people realize is the one thing Maul says once the fight is over. "Please have Mercy." You may be thinking, well of course because he doesn’t want to die to his master, but we see throughout that Maul will stay for a battle until one opponent is killed. Whether it be him or his rival. He has shown that he is willing to take a warrior's death (just like in rebels), and even with his Dathomirian origin it makes sense. So this scene shows exactly how scary Sidious is, even to Maul. The fact that Maul, despite being willing to have a warrior's death, he asks for mercy from Sidious. When even an evil, determined and beligerent foe like Maul asks for Mercy from Sidious, that is how you know what true terror is.

  • I love the little exchange starting at 2:50. Sidius jumps over him causally “dodge, dodge” then activates his lightsabers in a relaxed manner. It’s not even a battle ready stance either. He just treats it like a little dance rehearsal, “yup, 1, 2, 3, and 1, 2, 3.” 😂

  • I love how dominant Sidious is the whole battle. The only time when any semblance of a balanced conflict goes on is right after Savage dies. At that moment Maul proves that he is truly the one with the greatest ability to use what the sith philosophy teaches. He is the one who truly follows the sith code, the passion and hate gives power thing. But ultimately Palpatine is simply too good. He is the culmination of a thousand year plot, and a thousand years of linear improvement of the dark lords of the sith, beginning with Bane.

    • Palpatine did let mace hurt him so he could manipulate Anakin to dark side. His goal was not to kill mace, only to turn anakin.   • Can we just talk about how it's super amazing that they gave Palpatine two lightsabers in this scene purely to fix a minor plot hole in episode 3 that you really wouldn't notice unless someone pointed it out? (In his fight against Mace, Palpatine loses his lightsaber, but then has it again when he later fights Yoda. Giving him two fixes this with so little effort, it's amazing).

  • The fact this whole scene even took place is a testament to Sidious' evil. The whole encounter could have ended at 1:50 when both Savage and Maul failed to resist a mere force push from Sidious but he decided to test both their prowess in lightsaber combat instead and initiated the duel. Then at 2:40 after being successfully charged at by Savage and finding it difficult to take on both brother who have resorted to attack him from multiple direction simultaneously, you can see him audibly scowl before once more opting to use his superior mastery of the force to momentarily disable Maul and dispatch an isolated Savage. Finally, at 4:13 the dual wielding enraged Maul clearly has gained a lead against Sidious in terms of strength finally managing to land a kick and have the advantage in the final saber cross, however at this point Sidious had decided to end the encounter and further tapped into the dark side to overpower Maul on the saber cross, and opted to use the force to disable him.

    • @@Darknesss490I think rather that he can’t easily duel them both at the same time, especially since they surrounded him. However, his connection to the force would always be his trump card in the fight, allowing him to decide where the engagement would take place (throne room, to announcement yard place, to in front of the mural) as well as how it would take place as well (his amount of opponents and their fighting styles). Although the Maul duo could at least concern him in terms of their physical capabilities, they were in no way able to even touch him in terms of their force capabilities.

  • I think this fight showed how effective sidious is as a master. Mauls training went so far he competed against sidious in a duel one on one. Maul was nothing in terms of force but his physical skill is just to underrated

I know that Palpatine is obviously Palpatine and.. well, there's no debate that he's one of, if not the strongest Sith of all time. However, it is stated that Mother Talzin was on par if not a bit weaker than Palpatine, but when Palpatine went to take her as an apprentice, he sensed that Maul's force potential was greater than that of Talzin, meaning in theory, Maul could have easily become more powerful than Sidious.   • I dont think people actually realise that maul could have ruled the galaxy if it weren't for this fight, not only was he a tremendous fighter, he was a brilliant strategist and politician which often gets forgotten.     • The whole story of Maul is about failure and wasted potential. He would have ruled the Galaxy and reformed the Shadow Collective in George Lucas Episodes: VII-VIII-IX. But as we see in Rebels and Clone Wars, Maul always got close to complete his goals, until he was defeated in the last minute. That is one of the reasons why his death in Rebels is so well made and tragic.

  • I like rewatching this fight. It's so detailed. During the whole duel, Sidious is more focused on Maul. Completely humoring Oppresses attacks. Since he is aware of Mauls familiarity with his blindspots and openings. It was only until Palpatine realized Maul was opening him up to allow Savage to take the first blow. A deception that only further insulted Sidious even more.

  • On one hand, I'm impressed that Maul was briefly able to solo against Sidious, who is one of the greatest lightsaber duelists in history. On the other hand, Sidious considers lightsabers to be a weakness and the Force to be the greatest weapon a person can use. So like, Maul was amazing and probably in his best fighting form, but Sidous was literally just toying with him.

  • It is nuts. Absolutely nuts this scene. I mean, Maul's a pretty nasty guy, plenty bad, but he has his motives despite his executions. But when Palpatine shows up, Maul is met with sheer, incomprehensible absolute evil. He plays with them, revels and chuckles as he stabs Opress. He's fast, an old man against two Zabrak warriors and not even breaking a sweat. It makes Maul look like a hero in this scene. And when you think about it objectively - Maul dualwielding with the darksaber against a spry dualwielding Palpatine under Mandalore. Definitely one of the most iconic fights in Star Wars.

  • This fight is so sweet, the fact maul had become such a threat that Sidious had to deal with him personally, the fact that he toyed with them, he could have killed them with just the force but was so confident in his abilities he decided to dual fight them, the fact he kills oppress and tortures maul, like a wild lion toying with his prey before killing it! It’s so good! I never really felt Palpatine was a threat in the movies like Vader if he tried hard enough could over throw him especially since windu bested him but the clone wars made me LOVE sidious! Like he was so good he could have taken the galaxy whenever he wished but constructed this convoluted plan to embarrass the Jedi and make themselves the architects of their own downfall ensuring they’d never rise again to full strength. What a bad ass

  • Through the show we see Jedi try to kick Savage’s leg and he isn’t fazed. But at 2:42 we see Sidious kick Savage so hard with ONE leg that Savage’s entire body goes flying. Really great way to show just how powerful Palpatine is.

  • I always saw this moment as Palpatine looking at what Maul had and realizing he could be quite the annoyance to his plans. He also realized that there was no easy way of having either the Republic or the Sepratists to handle it. So what does he do? He takes his personal ship, flies down there himself and reminds his former apprentice who is in charge, and it sure as hell isn’t him.

    • "stand up to" is a gross overstatement considering how easy it was for Sidious to ragdoll him not once, not twice, but three times in the same fight. Sidious was clearly playing the entire fight as he was rarely on the offensive and mostly playing defense and dancing around his opponents clearly showing how easy the battle is for him. He doesn't go for the kill until that little bout with Savage, and you can bet the only reason he did that was so he could watch Maul suffer. If he wanted it to be quick he would have beaten Maul into the dust while Maul was watching over his dying brother, instead he wanted to savor every moment of Maul's suffering as true punishment for him trying to become a rival.

    • The Sun yes you are right. But when I say that I mean he actually dueled sideous. The most powerful sith at the time ( of all time probably) and came out alive. That is an achievement. Sideous’ duels are complicated. Because as an example in the windu fight no one really knows if he was trying to lose to get anakin it was actually trying and just lost. It is just tricky. I’m not saying maul could beat sideous. He couldn’t, maul may be powerful and a great dueler he is not even close to sideous or Vader. I’m just saying that he actually lived is incredible

    • @@jacobhogan380 and also when the novels were canon they made it clear that Sidious played coy at the end of the fight, though Mace was much better of an opponent than Sidious had anticipated. He was caught off guard but if he desired it he would have won, but he needed to bide his time for Anakin to come, note how the moment Anakin is in the tower Sidious conveniently gets disarmed and is in a clear position to be executed. For a man willing to risk everything for his plans he knew his faith in Anakin wasn't misplaced. It was a large gambit but he knew it would pay off.

He underestimated Mace but was still above him to the point he controlled the fight just like how Maul controlled the fight with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. Considering the time that they got on the window sill and how it was just a coincidence that right as Anakin got there Palpatine was "conveniently" disarmed. Palpatine controlled that fight, and if he wanted he could have crushed Windy without ever drawing his saber.

  • The one thing that separates Sidious from all the other Sith Lords is that they had some extent of love and humility in them. Even a violent and bloodthirsty killer like Maul had the ability to have concern and care for his “brother” as Dooku had for Qui Gon Jinn and Ventress to a certain extent and Vader to his son Luke.

  • What I like about this fight is how Sidious very clearly started _trying_ against Maul after Savage died. He's pretty much just dancing around for the first part of the fight, then when Maul gets pissed, he knows he needs to take it a bit more seriously.
