In this fascinating Coaches’ Voice Masterclass, Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca discusses the hot topic of inverted full-backs.
Maresca is among the most highly-rated coaches in modern football. His teams have a reputation for controlling games, courtesy of his tactical approach.
At Leicester, as well as in previous spells as head coach of Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad and with Parma, he has used inverted full-backs. He also assisted Pep Guardiola during Manchester City’s treble-winning campaign, where the concept of a player from the back line joining the midfield was employed.
Now, in this exclusive Masterclass, Maresca explains the thinking behind a full-back coming inside, how that can match up against various opposition formations, plus the positional requirements of the role.

I hope this guy can take on the premier league next season and be what we thought Kompany would be
With the money and players Leicester City have probably
I think it’s not exactly Kompany. What it actually does it show the exceptional the Premier league is at now across all teams in the league (then you have the top half being even stronger than that and then the top 6 another level again) it’s not the Kompany is bad but it is the the rest of the teams are actually really good
@@hook8535 Yes i absolutely love Kompany and I'm hoping he'll succeed and avoid relegation
Issue with Kompany is primarily that he doesn’t have the talent to play his playstyle in the prem. We all saw what he can do when facing an opposition he can impose the match on (beating Sheffield United 5-0). I’d stick with him, find higher quality players, and see if Burnley can really climb up the table with the squad improvement
Leicester are basically a mid table Premier league side in the championship. If they spend well next summer they will be fine
This guy's voice is pure perfection
He has transformed Leicester in a matter of months
Easy in championship to dominate with parachute payments look at Burnley
Can honestly say I've since Pep I've not seen anyone have such a clear style of playing and also managing to implement it so well. Each player knows their role & he managed to implement this style of play within 8 weeks which is so impressive.
Tottenham?
@@joelcolls1266Tottenham are just doing exactly what Ange done at Celtic
@@williamboyle3380 aye and that is because he has a clear style of play and doesn’t change it .
I have watched and been a Fox for 60 years, a season ticket holder for most of it - it is taking awhile to understand his philosophy , it goes against the way we have played for most of this time. Enjoying it , just need a quality striker to complete the jigsaw🦊
Loving what Enzo has brought to the team. Fingers crossed it's enough for promotion & then pushing on from there! #Enzoball......😍
We desperately need that Premier League competition, champions league football just isn’t on the same level
3 at the back... Exactly pep style rn.... Following his footsteps to becoming a wild manager.. cheers Enzo
He worked under pep, so of course he's following his footsteps.
Finally an Italian manager at Masterclass. I've been waiting a lot for it. We are in one of the worst periods of our football history nowadays but, as usual, this decay doesn't apply to coaches and goalkeepers. Wishing the best to Enzo, and hoping to watch a few more fellow Italians here, even if I completely understand language barrier is really high in our case.
You have simone inzaghi, he’s a brilliant italian coatch. Also De Zerbi.
@@biuless5275 and Ancelotti, Conte, Spalletti, Sarri
ahh, I remember Enzo Maresca , Juventus midfield in 2000.
Di Francesco also did a Masterclass
My manager 💙🦊
انزو ماريسكا مدرب جيد جدا امل أن ينافس على الدورى الانجليزى ❤ مثل عام 2016
Juventus should keep an Eye on this Man.. So far He's doing good + he knows the atmosphere at Juve
More More! ❤
Great video and explanation!
The Enzo Ball Is Amazing 🤩
I thought tbh we’d just be all-out attack this year, but we’ve been more focused on building up the play and yes it can be slightly dull at times, but it’s incredibly difficult to play against as we are so strong in the midfield compared to the rest of the league and can easily win the ball back to create forward momentum.
its so dull...horrendous to watch this team play football
@@ClassyCricket1worse than Rodger’s?
@@azzflacko5911 potentially, i’m not a Leicester fan tho it must be said i’m a Leeds fan🤣you guys are more consistent than us but just boring to watch, extremely dominant tho
@@ClassyCricket1 I’m ngl it’s frustrating to watch but there’s just no way we can actually be annoyed when we’re doing what we’re doing in the league and tbf that slow build up has led to some of the most attractive team goals I’ve ever seen us score so it’s swings and roundabouts 🤷🏽♂️
Thank you so much for adding the soccer ball button
"Pep junior" 👍👏❤😊
Can’t wait to watch it
me too
Tacticar is here! Neel
In Enzo we trust
Very similar to Arsenal's style love it
Arsenal have way more variations in every aspect of play, off and on the ball
Honestly speaking, everyone who has been associated with Pep Guardiola are destined to be the greatest...Enzo's explaination is every clear
Do they sell these tactic boards?
Dropping the defender in midfield wow this guy's has really learnt from Pep Guardiola ❤🎉
This is lovely, but I think I could get them promoted with their squad.
Sarri, Postecoglou, Luis Castro, Roger Schmidt, Ten Hag, Naglesmann, De Zerbi, Bielsa, Spalletti, Fernando Diniz, Knutsen, Rydstrom... etc, get this guys pls
They should just look for 1v1 duels all over the pitch in every game, offensively and defensively, as they have the best squad in 2nd division history and are so unbelievably more talented than all the opposition they face this season
Eric Ten Hag need to learn from this
he needs to learn from a championship coach? come one the aim is to win the pl not get relegated
@@MostUnbiasedFanenzo maresca is 10x better tactician than ten hag. Only reason man utd are winning is down to individual quality.
@@coopsycoop9913 no he ain't, if anything maresca is getting carried by individual quality. Leicester have a midtable level pl squad in the championship against teams like Sheffield Wednesday and qpr.
@@MostUnbiasedFanmaybe watch a couple Leicester games before you attempt to sum up our season… as someone who has watched every game so far, I’d say that at least 75% of our goals are well worked resulting from intentional buildup, not random stunner upper 90s
@@nexal8970 if you put maresca in charge of sunderland would he change them? No they would play exactly as they do now, and that's my point. Like kompany last season he's doing well mainly due to Leicester having a squad much better than everyone else. I'm not letting people say ten hag is worse when there's multiple examples of him coaching good goals at united. It's just that he's selecting bums who aren't fit to wear the shirt.
Anyone know where to buy that tactics board?
What’s the movement for the striker n wingers then?
❤
this man half time speeches must be strong asf with that voice
Against a 4-4-2 , I would use a flat 4-3-3 in order to have players between the spaces. And against a 4-2-3-1 , I would use a classic 4-3-3 but with the 2 central midfielders higher on the pitch in order to annoy their 2 central midfielders.
There’s a reason your not a manager
One of the big weaknesses of a 4-4-2 in the modern game is that it’s too flat. It still has its place in the game but why would you use a flat formation against it? A more dynamic 4-3-3 would allow more triangular passing angles which could be used to play straight through that flat midfield.
Cucurilla will shine under this Coach
Should get Michael Carrick on the next one
Ange is saying hello
The next Man City coach
Barça future mister please
🇮🇹🦊🔥
If you squint a bit, you could absolutely be forgiving for thinking you were watching Guardiola talk about his Man City tactics. Leicester will be okay.
Amazing coach But why does he keep so nervously touching the magnets ALL THE TIIIIME😅
Who wants Enzo as Liverpool manager?
Works well against farmers, didn’t work well against Leeds
Guardiolas student
i prefer 3 4 2 1
He even looks like Pep 😂
Couldn’t beat the Wednesday with his masterclass tho
Have fun in League One next season 👍
The battle of the baldies...Enzo vs Slot vs Pep vs Ten Hag will be tasty..
Where’s his masterclass against Hull?
Where is hull in the points table?
Hull are nobodies
i know what the hull masterclass was - to timewaste and foul every 2 seconds
His team had triple the shots than Hull, i’d say that’s a coaching masterclass. No his fault hull got lucky with a shot from a loanee
where's hull on the table?
Fail, lost to Leeds #MOT thats a useless video
but here you are watching it 👍
His understanding of tactics is 0, Leicester hardly wins matches, although they should win with a difference of 5 goals, his transfers are questionable and some decisions are simply absurd! Mareska OUT!
Hardly wins matches? We've won 18 this season and loss or drawn 4.
@@pauldavies9709 you, like the others, do not understand anything about football, I have nothing to talk about with you, your understanding of football is at the level of a stupid fan, while mine is at the level of a professional.
You are clueless mate maresca is the reason we are top of the leauge and promoted
@@FC24567 LOL )) yes, and now a transfer ban will be imposed on us and points will be removed))) We shouldn't have gone to the Premier League. and I repeat, Maresca has nothing to do with the first place, Leicester just have better players than other teams.
This guy is clueless.
Leicester now bore the opposition into submission with relentless backwards and sideways passing. I don't care if we're top of the table, the sooner Maresca is gone, the better.
How would things get “better”
you and the coach 1 packed lunch sitting down away brigade are exactly what’s wrong with Leicester support nowadays, bet you backed rodgers too last season
@@LCFC_Chris Haha! And sacking him was so successful wasn't it?
@@Kraed3 High possession resulting in so few shots on target is hardly exciting. Kamikaze defending will be punished severely when we go back up. I don't like the way we play now and I'm not alone.
@@atty61 agreed because it was too late in the season, by that point the ship had already sunk. we scored as many goals as villa last season and still got relegated as they got europe. brendan would have us playing lower end top 10 in the championship. just because we aren’t constantly hoofing it up the pitch doesn’t mean we’re playing bad, this is how football is now.
I hope we get promoted we are doing well BUT I think teams have found us out in the last few games we are certainly not setting the world alight
