In a second Masterclass delivered exclusively for The Coaches’ Voice, England assistant manager Steve Holland gives us a fascinating insight into the in-possession principles he and Antonio Conte developed in the Chelsea team that won the 2016/17 Premier League. In particular, he focuses on an attacking line of five comprising high, attacking wing-backs and a front three playing inside them.
He goes on to explain how subsequent Premier League champions - Manchester City under Pep Guardiola and the Liverpool team of Jürgen Klopp - have utilised the same principle of an attacking line of five, but with variations on who plays where and how the deeper five players in those teams are structured. Finally, he discusses how, in his current role, he and England head coach Gareth Southgate have adapted some of the same principles in building attacks from within their preferred 4-3-3 formation.

Great explanation, Conte doesn't get enough credit for how much he's influenced PL tactics since 2016
h bell pep talked about him a few years ago.
Every team using 3 back systems in the prem now lol
Steve is a master at teaching tactics. It is so didactic
I just looked up that word ..... Learned something new today
Steve Holland - Forever Chelsea Legend 🔵
Watched this guy progress from Cheshire FA Crewe Stoke Chelsea. England. Watching him at Crewe Alex Academy coaching was never a doubt he was going to the top. Worked hard deserves every thing.
Presumably England's next manager, considering the way they operate these days. Nice to see him discussing tactics so intelligently!
he is Englands manager, he properly handles the training and the tactics, while Southgate handles man management and helps with tatics
This guy has been assistant to the best of the best over the last ten years. No doubt he is the real man in charge of that team
Steve Holland is amazing. Incredible understanding.
Glad you enjoyed it 🙏
Yes he is a very knowledgable man who is humble, probably prefers to be a coach without the pressure of being a manager despite not getting paid at the same rate as a manager. Being England manager is usually more than its worth. Had he stayed at Chelsea Frank Lampard would have probably had longer,Jody Morris is a good coach but not in Hollands class. He has worked with some great managers.and learnt so much.
Great video. Would love to see a follow up video with how teams cope defensively against the five attackers
Still remember how every team began to switch to three at the back in 2017 because of Chelsea. It was as if it was a brand new system, the reality is that back 3s had been in fashion for many years in the past.
Love to see what Steve has done, tactical genius
Unreal video.. it's almost addicting.. the way Steve explains
Glad you enjoyed 😁 Steve does have a therapeutic voice.

Steve Holland is utterly fascinating. Thank you so much.
We're glad you enjoyed it 🙏
Perfect explanation. Really helpful. Well done Steve
I LOVE THIS SERIES
great video , steve holland explains things very well !! great channel by the way !! thank you !!
This was incredibly insightful to watch
Something he does not really mention much is how with all of these teams, pressing is a major part of their identity. Not only do they outnumber the offense when attacking 5v4, but also, if they lose possession their attacking third, they have 1 extra man to press with...which makes it easier to win the ball back and very difficult on the opponent to build through the back. Also, even in the event that the opposing team plays a long ball, you still have the numbers in the defensive half to mitigate that threat.
Very interesting! Great video guys
Most educational video so far!!
Great explanation!
Great explanation
I just find out this channel, I'm in love .. thank you so much guys An episode with allegri please ❤
Great explanation, very clear. Would be interesting to hear about a late arriving midfielder too - I guess would be a 6th attacker like Pogba in current United team
is there a video on how to defend using the 3-4-3? thanks!
Great video
He is like a teacher, also good voice
just a weird question but what is the name of the background music? Heard the knowledge sharing from Steve with this music background is just one thing to say: CLASS
Just a question of time before the the good old 2 3 5 came back into fashion! In early seventies when I played that was our only formation. Aren’t shirt numbers based on it?
Nice video
LOVE the orange and white colours. So unique. Normally it would be red and blue. Or red and white.
Just shows how good of a manager conte is.
Whenever Southgate leaves, he should be the man to take over.
Great series!! I think what is lacking on Chelsea today's tactics is Steve co-touch.
José Moreira jody’s fine.
This gives a good idea of what arteta is trying to do at arsenal with a back 3
Graceonfootball has a good article on this!
This is true, but I do not see Arteta staying with a back 3. Just looking at their transfer rumors I would expect him to move more to a 4-3-3 system that mirrors Pep's. However, IMO it will differ slightly with Tierney playing wider and up the pitch more with a Cedric stepping into the midfield to provide that cover on the right hand side. What will be interesting to see is how the front 3 will play. Aubameyang, Saka, Pepe, Nketiah, Martinelli all can play out wide or centrally. Partey is the shield they need in the midfield with Xhaka being a box-to-box enforcer with passing abilities and Ceballos playing between the lines. I also think Aouar would be a phenomenal fit for that more attacking CM role. The question for Arsenal lies in their defenders. Saliba has all kinds of potential. Luiz actually is FAR better in a back 3 system centrally... Then you have Pablo Mari. I think it would be advantageous to sign Malang Sarr on a free to give you that versatile CB/LB hybrid. Upamecano then would be a cherry on top. Everyone wants to talk about the improvement of Man U and Chelsea, and rightfully so, but I have been equally, if not moreso impressed with what Arteta has done. If the Arsenal board doesn't drag their feet Arteta has this Arsenal side, that has way more flaws than the other top 5/6 right there with Chelsea. I dont care who you are playing, getting multiple consecutive clean sheets with a back 3 of Kolasinac, David Luis and Mustafi is pretty damn impressive lol.
It was Steve Holland that in early 2018 persuaded Southgate to play 3-5-2 for the upcoming World Cup.
Steve has bags of experience working with top-class coaches Carlo, Rafa, Jose & Conte. Big loss for Chelsea.
Future Chelsea Head Coach 💙
This is brilliant. Question is how to counter the attacking 5?
TheLukeguy7 play a back 5 or press the defensive 5.
Soak up pressure Hit for the counter and hit the space the five have left open before they recover defensive shape. Or hold possession and test the defensive phase of the team. Set pieces, winning fouls to slow the pace, free kicks, corners. Depending on team and players of course.
One your midfielders has to help out deeper in defence.
Still waiting for Gasperini in Atalanta 4-1 Valencia
It's coming home
Come back stevie we need you with Frank!
💓
Belgium style
Have to be a reason since he left chelsea why we have been strugling.
tammy kolu it’s because we have a inexperienced team.
Come back to chelsea please
conte effect
Is it me, or is that last bit what England did against Croatia? Trippier defensive with mount and Walker joining Kane, sterling and Phoden in the straight 5?
Great video. One of the major flaws for England I think is the lack of a top level left footed centre back. Most systems here have benefited from that or you have to compensate with a more defensive left back (Alonso/Cahill, Robertson/Van Dijk, Maguire/Shaw). When the CB is good enough with both feet and has exceptional passing skills though this is negated, which is why its no surprise that Maguire comes straight back in for England despite Mings being so good for England in his games. Example of this is Maguire's amazing pass that put Harry Kane in on goal against CZE. In an Ideal world you would have Maguire on the right partnered with a Laporte/Bastoni/Pau Torres player in the LCB. Balance at the back is absolutely vital to build up play in the modern game. Thanks for the insight Steve
He explained Chelsea's attacking positioning and sure, at times they would have had that advantage, but in a way, he makes it look as if the opposition midfield was camping in their positions and not running back to help their defence. In a set-up defence, this is rarely the case, that you are attacking 5 v 5, or 3 v 2 on the wing. In transition, this explanation makes a lot more sense.
