Let's head to Wilmington, NC for a pick up. Dealing with weather, which is always very dynamic, isn't always easy. Hang on, it's gonna get bumpy!

  • Hey Pete love the videos I also fly a G58 and learn a ton from watching. Couldn’t get a good look at your panel but do you just let the auto pilot work through the rough stuff? Also was wondering where you kept your speed at. I believe 156 is POH turbulence penetration speed but I would imagine it wouldn’t hurt to slow it down a few knots less than that? Keep the videos coming love the content!

    • I think maneuvering speed is closer to 141 but don’t quote me on that. I usually just slow to around 153, gear and flap speed, has the triangle marker to identify in turbulence. I had autopilot on but guarded controls in case it kicks off. That allows me more time to focus on radar and make minor corrections in heading bug to try to circumnavigate the worst of it. Thanks for watching!

  • What an adventure. You seem pretty clam to fly thru heavy precipitation, this must not be the first time and you know ur bird well. Not sure how much delay the Sirius weather is? ATC is a great resource to keep u updated. Just last month I was in similar situation and was not able to get around, I simply landed and waited until the weather passed thru. Nice video.

    • Hey Pete. Again, like your video. I have always wanted to see the cockpit view and how to handle the airplane when bump into the heavy rain. For me, based on my plane (C182 and PA28) and my skill level, I have set myself a few red lines: go/no go. You have crossed all of my red lines, LOL. I am curious if you may share a few of your thoughts on the decision making in this situation. 1) what kind of rain, and/or turulence is a 'no go'. ATC has told you a few times up-front heavy precip. Any concerns on the turbulence and ice? 2) Whether in IMC or not, do you rely on your Sirius for the current precip status? Noticed you saw a gap between clouds on the screen. Do you actually trust where narrow gap is? appreciate it if you may share your experience.

    • @jamesqu2000 I use nexrad for long range planning but never as a tool to circumnavigate wx. I have onboard radar which is actual wx. I use it to see what to avoid, and I had a viable gap I was planning on going thru but it closed before I got there. Any convection would be avoided. I don’t play with TS’s. Weather is nothing to play with.

    • @@ProPilotPete like your onboard radar, very helpful. When you requested to descend to 3000. Was that because of turbulence or close to IAP requiring 3000ft?

    • @@jamesqu2000 just trying to get below the bases, sometimes that helps with turbulence.

  • Were you using auto tilt on the weather radar or manual tilt. What tilt were you using? Plus 5 or level tilt? I always wanted to paint ground at the top of the screen. If you can’t paint ground through it, don’t fly through it. I think you picked a good route. I always wanted to know the winds aloft and would deviate upwind if possible,especially with thunderstorms. I flew C-5’s with a Bendix RDR 1FB color radar with a 30 inch antenna-a great radar. • I was using auto tilt and at this altitude it’s probably around 6-7° up. We also have ground clutter suppression turned on, and auto gain. Very nice radar on the newer Barons.

  • It seems like you were focused on making a lot of adjustments and didn't talk much, then screwed up your tail numbers on the radio. I suspect all that heavy rain and turbulence had you stressed out pretty well, so even a seasoned pilot can get a little shook up. (no pun intended). Well done, Pete. I really enjoy your Baron flights.

  • great video. two questions. 1) at ~7:15 on the video, you had a major power reduction. did you go all way down to VA? 2) why not use the onboard color radar for your tactical storm penetration rather then the nexrad?

    @SMcda@SMcda5 ай бұрын
    • Probably when it started getting bumpy, I slowed quite a bit, not quite down to VA. I used both XM and my onboard radar, mostly using the radar as I approached the more intense wx. The G1000 nxi allows me to toggle between them and have radar over top of my normal map. Hope that answers it!

      @ProPilotPete@ProPilotPete5 ай бұрын
    • @PilotPete247 yes thx, I guess I missed the radar overlay. Looked like straight XM. will give back and watch, that's a very helpful tool. My Acclaim is legacy g1000 and no color radar, just XM. Thx

  • And this is how people kill themselves. What is the point of trying to fly through all this? Don’t they always teach to stay 20nm from a t-storm? What is the reasoning behind trying to shoot a gap?

    • Was not convective. Shooting a gap in precipitation vs. a TS. Big difference.
