the problem with belle's dress 😶🥀⚜️
this wasn't a video i planned on making, but i got SO many requests to do a video on costume design decisions i dislike and this was one of the first films that came to mind (the other is mentioned in this video). i LOVE the animated beauty and the beast film so much that i had the dish set and the computer game and watched the sequel every christmas as a child. i was really excited for the live action film when it came out, and of course, because i love clothes, i couldn't help but feel disappointed with some of the costume design choices. i have absolutely NOTHING against jacqueline durran or emma watson, i just think this could have been better. obviously all the views in this video are my own, if you disagree that's okay!

Modifying the dress as a "feminist" concept is just so dumb. It reduces what feminism fights for (like erradicating actual violence against women) to just clothing.
Thank you for stating this. Now, if only Hollywood would listen.
Ironically what Emma did was antifeminst, she probably did not research about the corsets topic kzhead.info/sun/rbKwhNWZpaJmdK8/bejne.html
Many celebrities see "Feminist" as a noun rather than a verb. It's all about identity and appearance rather than action. And frustratingly that trickles down into ordinary people too. So we end up having lots of irritating discussions about "Can a feminist do this?" or "Can a feminist do that?" rather than "Is this a feminist act?" It rips all the meaning and purpose out of the movement, and unfortunately I think that's the whole point.
The whole "corsets = oppression" is very 2010 feminism.
@BİKAS AYM BATMAN yes "Feminist" is literally a noun, but I was making more of a political statement when I said that it's a verb not a noun. I mean that's the attitude we should take.

The dress looks fine - as a prom dress or something. Not as what it should be - a really expensive wealthy golden dress
It’s pretty,But too..Simple for belle in my opinion her dress is like one of the ‘poofiest’ and the One in the live action is like a pastel golden dress you’ll wear for a special event. While in the animation It’s A shimmering gold with several shades of yellow,But a princess dress is Expensive
Prom dress.
Sad fact is, the dress cost a LOT of money. They put thousands of small crystals on top of the dress but it became completely unnoticable. The details weren't showing off as they're supposed to and the expensive crystals didn't spice up the dress, making the dress look dull and cheap ://
Yeah I remeber having read somewhere that the fabric was studded with a whole bunch of teeny-tiny Swarovski crystals
Really? I didn’t even know there were crystals
They want to make sparkle effect like Cinderella but fail. I barely noticed the sparkle probably because of the bright yellow color and the lighting

its actually the men who started the whole "corsets are oppresive" thing. women owned most of the corset businesses which men to fight their competition started calling it oppressive.

@ALLEGRA F But she can't sing! She's like the female equivalent of when they hired Gerald Butler to play Phantom. And even he did a better jobb because he actually showed emotions! Emma kept the same expression throughout the whole film. Seriously, watch a side by side comparison of the animated and live action film. The best scenes to compare are the Be Our Guest and the wolf scenes. Who has more emotion? The one that was made with paper and pencil!
@@Notsomethingtoknow Did you not read the numerous articles about the making of the film, because that's what they're talking about. Emma Watson stepped out if her boundaries as an actress and made so many decisions that wasn't her job to make. That's not a good thing. Films are a team effort and everyone was hired to do their jobs because they have the skills for them. Emma didn't study costume design, screen writing, or cinematography, so she isn't qualified to make such decisions but she did for this film because she wanted to, most likely threatening the production team that she'll leave if they don't do as she says.
In an interview, Emma has admitted that she said no to Cinderella over concerns of how the character stood up as a “role model”. “I didn’t know they were going to make Beauty And The Beast at the time I turned down Cinderella,” she told Total Film. “But when they offered me Belle, I just felt the character resonated with me so much more than Cinderella did." Thank goodness she turned down Cinderella.
I read that interview, and I remember how I was annoyed with it. Agree that it was a blessing that Emma turned down Cinderella 2015. Cinderella 2015 was the best Disney movie adaptation to me, hands down. Emma doesn't understand Cinderella, thus she doesn't deserve that role. Cinderella might not be a warrior princess, and ppl might see her passiveness as being weak, but she showed emotions and strengths in both the animation and live action versions. There is an essay concerning how ppl blaming Cinderella for not fighting back and not running away as blaming the victim. In those days, for Cinderella, having a roof over your head would be more important than winning the argument against her stepmother. At least in that house she was physically safe (I disagree of course with the abuse, I just want to point out that Cinderella has a reason to not physically fight back). And in the end, Cinderella's kindness and forgiveness are one of her most endearing traits. If those traits are not the traits of a role model, then what a sad thing the world we live in then... A side note: I see more and more people thinking that Cinderella 2015 is a better movie overall compared to BB2017, and I am glad they start to think so. It's not because I don't like Beauty and the Beast; I love the animation. I just can't relate with the BB live action version.
Emma really missed what Cinderella was about anyway. To still keep a kind heart when you are abused is not easy, and is severely looked down upon by people like Emma who grew up so privileged. The whole "just save yourself" attitude is toxic when you think it can be applied to everybody. and even Belle wasn't a "I'll just save myself" kind of girl, but that's the kind of character Emma wanted to push.
Lots of self proclaimed feminists insult Cinderella, forgetting the tiny detail that Cindy never looked for a man, she just wanted to go to a party. They put down the soft girls, as if that makes them empowering.
The thing about abusive family is that you *have* to be passive as to not get into trouble. You can't stand up for yourself and not expect there to be dire, dire consequences. In both movies the stepmother and sisters showed that they were capable of putting their hands on cinderella. Could you imagine if Cinderella yelled at them or slapped one of them!? She'd be locked up in the barn bruised and battered. Also, abuse does not make kind people. The fact that Cinderella, was verbally, physically and emotionally abused throughout most of her life up until age 19, and came out of it still kind and sweet shows more emotional and mental strength than any disney princess (or character) made during Walts' lifetime. I was abused by my step family. I'm now 19 and out of it. It did not make me a kind person admittedly and gave me a lot of my own anger problems. Cinderella broke the cycle, the strongest, most incredible thing an abuse victim can do
You guys look so goofy rn 😭 thanking god an actor didn’t play a character there’s ALREADY a movie for. Cinderella is kind of dead tbh because she has no self esteem or back bone when it comes to ppl hurting her , but she stood up for a DEER the prince was hunting 💀 vegan Cinderella ? I have no idea what that was abt , but she takes all the abuse from the step family with a smile
I’m so glad that there are many people who thought Belle’s dress was sadly underwhelming. I was so blind by the hype back then, I didn’t see much. Only the fact “Oh! It’s not accurate…but I guess that can’t hurt, right?” Now that I look at her dress again…I don’t really like the design. I have to say her dress looked bland. Less of a “princess” dress and more of a.. long summer dress to the pier. Or... ya... it’s ok. But I couldn’t even say it’s nice looking on her.
The problem is that they let Emma Watson have a say in the design of it. She’s not a fashion designer, so she doesn’t have the right “eye” for what works and what doesn’t work, what looks good etc, for a costume. The result is that the dress turned out looking incredibly plain. The part I dislike most is the changes made to the shoulder parts. In Belle’s original dress, it had a gorgeous off-the-shoulder design. Here it’s just simple capped sleeves. The top part of Emma’s dress literally just looks like it could be from a fitted T-shirt. Such a waste, they had the chance to bring the beautiful animated dress to life in the live action remake but instead they went with this basic-af dress
I think you’re right. There were actually two dresses for the dance in the film, a longer one with less tiers (what even are those tiers?) and the one you see mainly in the film. You can actually see the longer one used in all the merchandizing. Apparently Emma didn’t want to wear the long one for feeling she would trip during dancing (not as if an experienced costume designer would probably not give an actress a death trap if she knew there was a dance scene, but whatever). And also, there are images of the first iteration of that dress having the half-sleeves iconic of dresses in that period. I’m unsure if it was Emma or higher members of production, but either way the sleeves were scrapped, and with that they lost any sense of cohesion with the costume world around it. The corset refusal (which, like the video says, isn’t even a later, waist-cinching corset, they are stays which keep the breasts in place and a foundation for a dress) is just insult to injury.
It was not only Emma, but Disney executives also wanted to go for a more "modest" dress because they had so much shit for the Cinderella dress by "feminist" sjw because it looked too magical and create unrealistic expectations... I know, it's nonsense.

As a busty girl looking into wearing a corset for my back pain I find the amount of misinformation appalling. Also, 90% of the corsets if seen are basically meant for waist training which is NOT the point of a corset
the fact that all the corsets seen are meant for waist training is why she didn't wear one.
But seriously, what's the PROBLEM with waist training? I'm not suggesting extremes here, but having a slim waist is kind of necessary to be healthy - I don't mean it's unhealthy to be overall stocky or plump naturally, but if your waist is out of proportion and as big as your hips or bust, that's kind of a giveaway of being overweight, which is unhealthy. If a corset helps to ensure you don't let yourself get overweight, that's a good thing! And that's even without the much more important virtue of support.
@@cmm5542 A slim waist has nothing to do with being healthy, nor does it have anything to do with one's weight (plenty of even skinny girls have waistlines that aren't substantially smaller than their hips, because people have different proportions and body shapes, not influenced by their body fat. It's _anatomy),_ nor does a corset do anything to "ensure you don't let yourself get overweight." I've worn corsets, and trust me when I say that there's nothing about them that restricts you from eating normally, or even excessively. The only thing that was ever damn uncomfortable to do in a corset was _sneeze._
@@Mokiefraggle Sorry I wasn't clear. I was trying to indicate that because of different body types, just as you said, wearing a corset or having a slim waist naturally or any other health/beauty choices or even natural build can't be seen as signs of oppression. For all we know, a girl with a slim waist who also wears a corset would have a slim waist naturally, and someone without a slim waist may still choose to wear a corset, not to force slimness, but for other valid reasons. I was just pointing out that if a girl DOES have a slim waist or chooses to dress in a way that creates the appearance of a slim waist because she WANTS to, she shouldn't be criticized for upholding 'impossible beauty standards.' Everyone has a right to make their own choices regarding their appearance, regardless of societal expectations. It can be a very big boost to one's self esteem to stand out, and an equal but different boost to meet expectations: it's all about how YOU perceive yourself and the reasons you make your choices.

What they could've done was put the boning in the top part of the dress and it will still give the look of a corset with the support needed like they do modern prom and wedding dresses of today. That dress is hideous.
The costume designer said when the movie came out, that because Emma Watson refused to wear a corset, she couldn't support the weight of the original costume, and the costume had to be drastically redesigned to make it more wearable without a corset, and the chiffon dress was the best she could come up with to still make it flowy. Basically, Emma Watson's selfishness ruined the film for all of us.
I agree. Belle isn’t my favorite princess but the actress is here to play Belle, not Emma Watson and express her personal beliefs. Belle’s golden ballgown is just so beautiful and personally one of the most beautiful gowns of the Disney princesses, and that’s what made the scene one of the most iconic scenes Disney ever created! Because its GOLD, it shimmers and makes her shine like a diamond. This dress was so disappointing, not only from it doesn’t even look like the dress but it looks like a diy project gone wrong. My mom made me a beautiful turquoise dress with rhinestones and gathers that looked waay better than the actual dress. This could’ve made Disney live actions worth it if Emma wouldn’t have been so stubborn. Disney should’ve fired her and hired a new actress saying she can express her beliefs somewhere else.

I was actually rather disappointed with Belle’s gown in the live action version of Beauty and the Beast. I understand cartoon dresses can defy the laws of science and whatnot; however, compared to Belle’s dress, the skirt of Emma’s dress appeared forlorn and seemed to hang limply with nothing to support its shape. Additionally, the fact that a corset or stays were not worn beneath the gown’s bodice marred the effect, and did not allow for as much of a whimsical, magical Disney appearance. I had expected something elegant and extravagant, something that would appear expensive and almost unrealistic, as that, I feel, is what I have been trained to expect based upon the other creations that through the art of sketching have been presented to me in the animated versions of these Disney films. Moreover, I would have liked to see more extravagant fabrics used in her dress and heavier embroidery to give it that air of wealth. Overall, the dress was not good, but it was not terrible. In my humble opinion, that is.
I agree, its especially bad when compared to live action cinderella, who changed the dress drastically but still made it seem magical!
An actor’s job is to embody the character’s life and time period. Belle would have worn some sort of corset and nothing in Emma’s portrayal suggested otherwise.

And I'm not saying EW is the root of the problems with that film, but she is certainly part of it.
As an actor, you’re living INSIDE the time period as the character you’re portraying. So, while I understand not wanting to wear a corset as a feminist statement, that’s not accurate to the time period. I respect her morals, but acting isn’t about your personal morals, it’s about becoming this other character with completely different morals. Also, if a costume designer says you’re wearing a corset YOURE WEARING A CORSET. It’s just basic respect for the designers, idc if you’re a celebrity.
Thank you for using the proper term of actor.
Sophia Wilson I think that no matter what an actor has agency over her body. So if she didn’t want to wear it she shouldn’t be forced. If the need to fire her so be it
Thing is it's so violently against her character too. Belle was always the most mature, no nonsense of the Disney princesses, and putting her in a flowy unstructured whimsical dress is so opposite to her down to earth character
@@004slade I think the problem here was not that she didn't want to use the corset as a feminist statement, but the fact that she put that above other workers and that her statement doesn't even make sense considering the history of corsets is what bothered me the most. She forced her opinion on others while being ignorant on the subject.
After all this, it's all based on a misconception anyway. Corsets aren't a tool of the patriarchy to control women, it was originally a female-run industry, just like bras. Corsets=bad is ironically a result of misogynistic backlash against those women who became self sufficient off their businesses.
When somebody on Tik tok makes a better belle dress than the actual movie says something that the person was worn out.
Can we also talk about in the opening sequence, where we meet Belle, many of the background characters are wearing blue. Something that was supposed to only be wore by Belle to help her stand out as strange and different to the town citizens. But in the live action she blends in with the rest of them, making her seem part of the town.
It’s so ugly and looks cheap as hell 😭😭 I’m sure you could get the exact same piece on AliExpress. Just put slap some glitter glue on it and voila.
That's what they literally did in the movie. "Oh look, there's some extra glitter on the ceiling! Lemme just uh...aaaaand....done!"
My thoughts exactly. The simple style, the overall single color, the lack of any structural support. It's just like one of those prom dresses from Ali. Overall it just looks too... plain. It also looks like your basic modern gown. Not like a princess dress at all.
The fabric looks extremely thin as well.
Like I've literally seen cosplays and costumes of this dress that look ten times more expensive and you know they had nowhere near this movie's budget

Also isn’t Belle’s dress in the cartoon technically gold?
Because now days if you criticise something , people will get offended and call you a hater .

Bruh I was so impressed with the 2015 Cinderella dress it was just so perfect and so I was excited to see what Belle’s dress was going to look like… but oh god I was just so sad.
I love how Emma said Belle rides a horse like Lily James didn't in Cinderella...
I don't understand why they always give Emma Watson so much freedom over her costumes. This dress was an absolute disaster in every way. Micarah Tewers made a video on how the costumes of little women didn't deserve an oscar, and she also explains how terrible the dress of Belle is, and created her own vision of what the dress should have been (she is amazing at making great costumes). I understand Emma Watson's intention concerning corsets, but she obviously doesn't master her topic enough to be given so much freedom over her costume...
i was gonna comment about micarah until i found yours!! love her, she also said this era in france would have been about structure and artifice (if i remember correctly) and emma's dress is too flowy and ethereal. it was such a waste edit: the word she used was whimsical and not ethereal, I misquoted her
I agree with what Micarah said there too!
Morgane Jourdain love ur reference to micarah! That’s awesome! Totally agree.
She’s also being paid.... a TON of money.. throw ur political agenda elsewhere and at least do ur historical research before assuming you know anything about the era. That is why the job should be left to the designers not the ACTors.. what’s your job again?? Oh that’s right ACTING.
People who watch micarah should kind of know that its called stays not corset
You didn’t even mention the worst part! The embroidery was GLITTER GLUE.

The horror!
You're kidding...right?
For real?? 😷
Oh Lord...
So I actually met someone that worked on this film and they were telling me some things that reminded me of your video. Let's just say you are right the designer had other plans but someone made a stink about her ideas and so she had to quickly change the costume.
I feel like she’s the historical costume adviser, but the producers silenced her in favor of Emma Watson’s uneducated views on corsets.

Corsets aren’t oppressive they are undergarments. You can wear a corset without tight lacing. If it was such a problem for her she could have just worn stays
And they are comfy. When you wear them correct.
Weren’t corsets made to hold the dress up on a woman and to help with posture?
@@lucifernazaedi yeah they were pretty beneficial and helped with supporting you and your outfit. (That is if worn correctly otherwise it could hurt you)
@@lucifernazaedi Yes but nowadays they are made to make you look super skinny, rather than giving support for the dress. And since everyone always needs a woman to be skinny in order for her to be pretty, corsets are pretty much an oppression on women nowadays because of their new purpose.
@@Halo-rg6dr Every woman wants a tall man. You can't change height but you can change weight so I find it stupid anyone makes that argument. Plus, corsets do not make you *super skinny* but rather put more definition on your curves. Nonetheless, corsets can't be oppression if it is out of the woman's will to wear them. I know women who wear them and they wear them because they like them.. not to impress anyone. And corsets are also used for better posture and for medical purposes.
it doesn’t even look Victorian, it’s kinda looks like a simple “wedding gown” in yellow.
More like a prom dress. Believe me, I work with outdoor weddings, and even the more simple wedding dresses are more elegant than the gowns Belle wears.
It doesn’t take place in the Victorian era. It takes place in the 18th century. Victorian era doesn’t start until the 19th century.
Tbf a Victorian dress would’ve been closer to accurate, not by any stretch accurate but at least...historical
It’s not Victorian
Mary Ryan I think they mean that the dress doesn’t even reach the elegance and structure of a Victorian dress, nonetheless a Rococo dress! :)

Love this analysis! I’m always surprised about the corset thing, how in modern pop culture the corset is portrayed as a torture device when it wasn’t really that.
I find it ironic that feminist actresses refuse to wear corsets as a ‘statement’. The reason people think these entirely inaccurate myths about corsets is because of misogyny. Men felt threatened by a widely female-run industry- corset making. So they invited rumours and exaggerated stories about them so that the industry would fail. Saying it’s a feminist statement to not wear a corset is a tad ignorant and perhaps these people should do some research on them before forming a full opinion.
*mic dropped*
corsets were like a bra back then. and what’s wrong with a little support?

I really did not like the live action dress. It looks too modern, while everyone else is historically accurate. I mean it's nice on its own, but when we've seen everyone else in the more extravagant outfits, it just looks so underwhelming! It would be like showing up to a world class restaurant in t-shirts and jeans.
I literally forgot HOW bad the dress was, when you showed the first clip of it I literally gasped. All the magic & beauty of the original movie and the original dress.. gone.
I feel like they created this vibe of “Belle isn’t like OTHER girls, she’s a feminist and she actually reads books and is SMART so she doesn’t wear fancy ballgowns and she never wears makeup and barely does her hair!” which is why literally EVERYONE is dressed nicer than her, even in the only scene that she has a fancy ballroom moment. And that vibe is cool, Belle isn’t focused on appearance which is part of her charm, but I think clinging to that idea just made the most iconic scene seem lackluster. Also I can’t stand the idea that a smart feminist woman inherently doesn’t care about fancy clothes, hair, and makeup. Like why couldn’t belle be smart, kind, focused on inner beauty, but ready to serve looks at the “ball”?
So she needs to look like the girl in a cheap prom dress to reveal her "inner beauty"? What the point of a ball scene and a grand reveille of this horrible dress if not to emphasize her beauty? If she is so feminist that rejects fancy dresses (the closing and jewelry, btw were the only capital women were allowed to have those days and she just... reject it??) why they made a whole scene where she is flaunts in this "beautiful" (no) dress instead of just give her something simple to wear? This scene was IMPLIED as the moment of her heyday, but through the efforts of Emma Watson and the team of costumers, they turned this magical moment into a laughing stock. If Belle does not care about her appearance that much, why did she put on a "beautiful" dress, and did not stay in the clothes she wore in the village? This is simply the poor work of costumers and the inept use of the word "feminism" as an excuse for their own unprofessionalism.
Just because she's beautiful on the inside doesn't mean she shouldn't want to be beautiful on the outside. It isn't vain or shallow to want to look your absolute best for a special dance.
I think that you are right. They gave her clothes that made her different, not fitting to those time in purpose. Simple and classy that just support her beauty, without a need of creating it. (Tho I didn't like the yellow dress :c)
But in the original that is the only time she wears a gown like that. Why would it be against her "believes" to wear something awesome for once? I personally think they also did it because they wanted to make it look a little more modernised. Which failed.

I agree. Cinderella 2015 is actually one of my favorite movies. The colors, the story, the actors, the magic, the originality... in short everything was well thought and realized. The prince had a true role! The movie stands for itself, the story is coherent from beginning to end, there are new songs and music etc... Beauty and the Beast was a copy/paste of the animation movie... even the songs were the same, the scenes too etc... so little change!! I was so disappointed... Actually, I prefer the animation movie. The scene where the prince is turning into a human is far better (for me) than in the live action.
This is a prom dress I'd never choose to wear 😌
This dress reminds me of those princess cakes where you make the cake look like a dress and stick a barbie doll in the middle.

@Dani Damien Yes, but they are more referring to the fact that a lot of the support needed for a bigger extravagant, century-accurate dress would need a corset for it to not end up incredibly badly.

And there are a crap ton of yellow dresses in the background of the ballroom scene that would have looked stunning on Belle! All of the dresses in that movie, although maybe not entirely historically accurate, they still make an effort to resemble the 1840s and 50s, and on top of that, they're absolutely gorgeous! The thing is, a bunch of the dresses in the Live-Action BATB are accurate to the 1760s-80s as well, and they look wonderful! So it baffles me how they put Belle in such a terrible 'gown'!
Yeah except the colour.

Hated the dress and I'm disappointed that they let Emma Watson steamroll the film and the character. It seems to me that she forgot her job was to show up and become Belle. Bring the animated character to life for the audience. Instead, she decided to come in and turn Belle into her. That's not what should have happened. It's a good example of why people need to kind their place on set. There are times when the input and suggestions are helpful, and there are times when they need to be told no and explain why you can't compromise the character's personality and costuming just because a notable celeb says so. If that's the case, then I would take a lesser known actress who wouldn't get in the way of the character. 🤷♀️
In an interview, Emma has admitted that she said no to Cinderella over concerns of how the character stood up as a “role model”. “I didn’t know they were going to make Beauty And The Beast at the time I turned down Cinderella,” she told Total Film. “But when they offered me Belle, I just felt the character resonated with me so much more than Cinderella did. Thank goodness she turned down Cinderella. She deserves all the hate this time.
Tbh this is making me care more about what year I have my story’s in and what there wearing- ty for bring this into light for me- and this was very detailed and I appreciate that your talking about it so in depth
ALSO it MUST be noted that corsets were, in fact, a HIGHLY feminist statement during this era. It gave structural support for the working women to do their jobs, and it wasn’t incredibly cinched to give an hourglass look at all times. It was often very breathable, that women would even EXERCISE in corsets in order to maintain stability. These new “feminist” actresses are completely uneducated in historical fashion, as they are not expected to. However, throwing around blatantly uneducated points of “female oppression” is so cringey.
SV SCRIB Exactly!
@Maria Giulia Rodriguez you have your timeline so confused. the late 1800s (not the mid 1700s which is when this film would've taken place) is when tight-lacing increased in popularity and became common practice. THAT'S when people actually tried to change their natural shape with a corset (like a modern day waist trainer) and it's what most people think ALL corsets are. unlike modern times where people tend to overexert themselves by attempting to tight-lace themselves into a corset quickly, women of the 1700s wore a corset/stays (NOT a tight one) from very early ages. it made wearing them natural (like a bra) and it was VERY rare for it to actually adjust organ placement. corsets in the 1700s were made with materials of the time and thus were much softer than modern corsets. in regard to the working class they didn't own multiple corsets, they'd have one that they would wear until it couldn't be used anymore, this made their personal corset soft and worn. corsets in the 1700s were literally used as back support (those dresses were HEAVY) and it wasnt until the victorian/edwardian period that the 18-inch waist was what people strived for. you can't lump one time period with another, especially when we're talking about historical accuracy. there is so much research about this i highly recommend checking it out.
Exactly! Bernadette Banner has an amazing video on the misconceptions of corsetry! kzhead.info/sun/pamxetejeYyZimg/bejne.html

How is it a "feminist statement" to refuse to honor the real life clothing choices of our fore-mères? Is it feminist to say to centuries of women, most of whom made their own intimate apparel, that they were stupid? Or that their method of supporting their breasts and distributing the weight of their skirts was oppressive?
This is the best answer. This is exactly why her "statement" falls apart. Thank you.
Good point. Some women still wear a modern version of a corset to fashion or for practical support. I thought being a feminist was about choice? Belle could read, work the land and look after her elderly father, I highly doubt Belle was forced into a corset. Emma was given too much leeway by the director. The director of "Little women" obviously didn't because she wore a corset in "Little women".
Corsets are actually very feminist because the thing about corsets being harmful was a myth created by men who felt threatened by a primarily women-run industry. Also, tight lacing was only a thing rich people did for fancy balls and stuff, it was not the norm.
@@faraway-2009 Even then, tight lacing was seen as a very vain thing to do. Some did it occasionally, but people more often than not talked badly behind their backs for doing so. It was the 18th - 19th century version of plastic surgery.

@@offsewingdragons9142 interesting take. Love it
Contrary to popular belief, the corset In Pirates of the Caribbean wasn’t an image of oppression and restrictions. It was a plot device. Elizabeth’s corset was over tightened by her servants (since they are a small English settlement, they likely didn’t use such high-end garments that often, as noted by Governor Swan’s comment “I’m told it’s the latest fashion in London”) which caused Elizabeth to go light headed after James Norrington began to propose, causing Jack to save Elizabeth, slice the ties off, and discover the medallion she hid. It was a very well executed series of events that keeps getting misunderstood.
that makes a lot of sense. It wasn't like Elizabeth had to appear in court every day, wearing extravagant, heavy gowns that required a full-boned corset. She lived in an English colony in the Caribbean, not London or Paris.

I've waited for this movie and thought it will be magical, but when I saw it,all I wanted to do was turn it off and put the original one instead. @@kristinahuchison2511 yeah but I think the point of Giselle’s dress was to show how she’s slowly falling in love with the modern world (idk how but to each their own I suppose lol) I think the decision to have her be the only one wearing something modern was on purpose, cuz at the beginning she’s a total fairytale princess but by the end she’s learned more about the modern world and we see that in her dress and how she kind of wants to stay in this world now. I do agree, I liked her poofy white wedding dress better, but the mermaid dress made sense in the context of the movie imo
It’s an ugly dress, very inaccurate and not eye catching. Plus corsets are historically accurate. Don’t care for Emma Watson and I didn’t bother to watch this film. What a shame.
stephanie I mean I wouldn’t call him her captor, she chose to stay(albeit to take her father’s place)
Izzy Izzy ah this story isn’t bullshit.
Izzy Izzy uh, he didn’t take her by force. She chose to take her father’s place, she sacrificed herself for her father. Did you watch the movie? It’s very important that she agreed on her own.
Izzy Izzy and also she didn’t start to like the beast until he actively changed himself on his own accord and started acting kinder and didn’t realize she loved him until after he told her to leave him(pretty much sacrificing his life for her)
Izzy Izzy brah I know this is late, but the morals of Beauty and the Beast are self sacrificing for those you love and putting people you love needs before your own(Belle chooses to take her father’s place, the beast tells Belle to go to her father(it was his idea) even though he knows he’s going to die and even tells her to take the mirror with her even though he could have kept it to look at her) redemption, forgiveness, personal growth, learning to not judge someone for being different(Belle for being an introverted bookworm and the beast for looking like the beast) the whole thing about Gaston and the townspeople is that they look at things skin deep and judge things for being different from them, they love Gaston because he’s a good hunter and he’s handsome and muscular, but he’s arrogant and rude and a slob. The townspeople are small minded and are just okay with their day to day toiling and their status quo. Gaston is what the Beast would be without the enchantment or without meeting Belle, or without having the servants. Lafou is Gaston‘s yes man, who’s in his shadow because of the status it gets him, in some parts of the movie he’s just as viscous. Gaston wants to marry Belle because she’s beautiful, but then wants to take all her uniqueness away and just turn her into his housewife and incubator. Where are the Beast recognizes her kindness, maturity, intelligence, charm and he wants to do something for HER, something that she likes, something personal, he encourages and accepts what other people call her weird for, he embraces it. (Which is something she said she wanted the song “Belle” “and for once It might be grand, to have someone understand”)I’ve never felt this way for someone before. I want to do something for her”. If he was just her captor she wouldn’t have came back and nurses him back to health, she would have left him in he woods and he wouldn’t have saved her from the wolves and also if this was her being timid she wouldn’t have yelled at him while she was tending to his wounds, Belle isn’t dumb, or timid or naive. She’s emotionally and mentally mature, maybe curious and a little wanderlust, but she’s not a dreamy headed 16 year old like Ariel. I’m not saying this is or isn’t a feminist film, but I think it helps that the one person who said anything explicit sexist(“women shouldn’t read they’ll get ideas” wanting Belle to throw away any of her own ambitions or wants and just be his “little wife”(which she totally resents) and to rub his feet) is shown as the villain and the leader of a literal angry mob and then dies horribly at the end. Sorry for the Ted talk, but I absolutely love this movie and hate when people get shit mixed up about it.

Yeaaaah, corsets aren’t uncomfortable if they are created for your waist and body type. The actresses that say they felt faint didn’t have the proper fitting for the corset. You can do all sorts of things in a corset if it is properly fitted and not tied tightly. Actually you don’t even need to tie a corset tight at all for it to achieve the look
tbh Emma was such a karen for doing something like that
Facts
I just wish it was gold, sparkly and had an off the shoulder poofy sheer sleeve moment with frill trim, oh and those layers on the dress gone, I want a "bell" shaped silhouette for the skirt (no pun intended)
Can you imagine if Belle's dress was designed and layered to look like a rose flower?
yeah the skirt could've had more shape 🤦♂️
i think even emma watson herself eventually went back and was like "i was actually stupid here, sorry"
I would hope so, considering that Belle's entire wardrobe fell flat due to her imposing HER vision on the costume designs instead of leaving it to the professional costume designer. Poor woman had to find so many tactful ways of saying "please, don't blame me for this or hold it against me when considering future jobs." Edit: Not to mention, she fell into the trap so many movies do when trying to make their historical heroine seem modern and relatable. That is, thinking of the dress as a costume instead of clothing. PoTC had the same problem. It's when the heroine will walk around in her underwear, no problem. Elizabeth flinging off the jacket her father gave her to cover her shift on the pier, or Belle stripping off her dress entirely to rush to the castle to join the fight. The historical version of standing in front of everyone in your bra and panties. And Belle running around town with her dress tucked into her drawers. Not only were those not a thing at the time, when they did turn up they were viewed as being for loose women. So, Emma had Belle going all over town doing the equivalent of the drunk girl at the club who left the bathroom with her dress tucked into her panties.
i would assume she probably did. because in her most recent movie, little women, she actually wore a corset. so maybe she just researched or smt.
I really hope so
Shouldn’t she do the same for Little Women also then?
Yeah, I feel like she's probably realized her own interpretation as incorrect and has gone and done research of her own. She doesn't seem like the kind of person to not be introspective ykno?
Emma saying that corsets are "anti-feminist" and restricting only shows how gosh darn sexist her idea of corsets is. Women DID do everything in corsets, so her saying Belle wouldn't wear a corset to be able to do everything is like saying she wouldn't wear a skirt for the same reason. Like, hell, give Belle a sweatshirt and leggins if you care about comfort and don't care about historical accuracy, why not.
Agreed, otherwise how would anyone get any work done if they were supposedly "restricted" in their corsets? haha Yes, you could run in a corset, dance in a corset and definitely ride in a corset! I would love to see what Belle's dress would have looked like if they had indeed incorporated a corset and had allowed the designers more creative freedom to create an actual magical princess dress which looked as awesome as the singer's dress. Fair enough, maybe Emma didn't want to be carting around 10kg worth of fabric like Cinderella's dress was, but seriously, iconic characters need to have an equally iconic dress.
Hell yea, have her wear the causal dress luke on wreck it ralph 2 and turn it into a joke movie. It might be more interesting then 😂
I still think casting Emma as Belle is a bad choice till this day
@@rattyk7042 I just think they should've at least chosen someone who can sing 😅
Funnily enough, corsets were actually comfortable and supportive and served the purpose of supporting the bust and straightening the back beyond creating a specific silhouette (tightlacing corsets every day wasn't common). Also, if Emma Watson were as educated on women's rights and feminism as she likes to portray herself, she would know that men were actually the ones to spread misinformation about corsets in the first place... (edit: I wrote 'of' instead of 'if' and it was bothering me haha)
The dress itself is gorgeous, but it looks "prom" gorgeous, not "old french upper class fashion" gorgeous, which really takes you out of the inmersion
