The boat was towed to a nearby beach/island and later salvaged. Was this captain error or was it completely unavoidable? Let us know your thoughts! 👍
I would think NOT having so many in front and speeding up would have avoided this.
As a former Coastie I’m going to have to say probably 70/30. State Police we’re definitely in the right place at the perfect time! Kudos to them!
Terrible seamanship by the "captain." So many mistakes it's hard to list them. The biggest question is why do these idiots continue to put little kids (or anyone for that matter) in the bow in this situation? One kid has a PFD on, but it's not zipped. Basically useless.
Mostly operator. Too slow and trimmed all the way down (as well as load of people up front) were big issues here. Should have trimmed up to lift the bow and attacked it at a higher speed and moved a few passengers to the middle or back, although with this incredibly poor bow design I wonder if this situation is almost unavoidable in conditions like this.
Wow. That was really bad. 🙀
The fact those kids were under water and not one adult seemed concerned in the back other than dumping beer is mind blowing...
Say hello to the generations of parents who make kids for social validation and are nothing but accessories to them
And what were they going to do about it? As soon as one stood up they'd been flown from the boat.
@@raindances3310 Given the history of that inlet, I wouldn't have let myself or my kids be out there in a boat. Might as well go play on the highway or some train tracks.

Right rather than them getting up and getting the life vest on the kids
@@jamiebraswell5520 yeah I thought that at first but then saw that she didn't scoop any up.
Well if they still have the cans that just makes it look more like they drank it all. Why pour out the contents?
I love how the adults stay at the highest part leaving the kids up front. One boy was pretty small and could've came out and drove over. I find it odd the blonde in the back went to the highest part and poured out her alcohol and sat there instead of making sure the kids were back there.
They were trying to raise the bow with their weight
I love how invariably they only start to look for life jackets once the boat is full of water, and there's always someone sitting on where they're stored, and they've never practiced putting them on of course ... 🙄
Yeah it's sad especially with kids. At least know which life jacket fits you before going out and where they are stored!

@@edx21x The level of stupidity and incompetence is staggering. And then the spectators clogging up the scene was great too, not enough sense to get out of the way. The masses lack situational awareness, usually with fatal results.
Every Damn Time . . .
Errors: No prior planning for life vests. No consideration of weight distribution so that the captain could keep the bow trimmed into the waves - this took away the ability to use speed up/down to manage the crests - effectively turned the boat into a water plow.
Error #1… there was no capitán 😂😂😂😂😂.. not every one is one..
Not to mention the horrific hull design….. it’s basically a lake/still water cruiser…..
The design IS a water plow. The lowest point should not be in the front of a boat.
The life jacket thing it unbelievable. Why aren't those kids in life jackets all the time on the water. It's the law in most places. What happened to the boat? Video guy could have said.
Zero consideration of anything.
The sinking boat is made by Sea Ray - appears to be about 20 feet long. They currently have a 21-foot outboard model rated for 12 people. In this video I counted 11 people on board. They may have been "legal" per the builder's specs, but for those conditions it may be too much. Throw in poor judgement by the captain (or lack of experience) and this is the outcome.
If you're going to have a boat like that in a location like this, you should add a couple of heavier-duty pumps to it. The stock pumps on lake boats like these aren't meant to get rid of huge, instant influxes of water like you see here. They're meant to pump out rain water and keep them from sinking at the dock. They have no chance to keep up with such a large volume of water that is taken onboard basically instantaneously.
Well unwritten rule: Don't use a lake boat outside of a lake. If you decide to ignore that rule, don't overload it and fill up the bow with people in a chop. Yes, it's pure Captain(or lack of one) error. As for the Aluminum boat, yes I would go thru with it. It would be a rough ride but if you know what you're doing it's just about impossible to sink it. Mystery boat looks like an older Triton SF with an aftermarket T top.
+1 on the aluminum a bit rough but the bow is high, good job IMO better than the other moron.
F..... Bowrider at the Sea
What's the difference between a lake boat and a boat for the open sea?
@@NM-ev7pu you have to compare a open bow to Dual Console. Seem the same, but dual console is for the ocean
Some bow riders are okay in the ocean. It all depends on the distance from the water line to the gunwale (freeboard). Lake boats have less freeboard as in this case. Lots of mistakes by this captain. Too many people on the boat, wrong boat for the conditions, people sitting on the bow and no one was wearing a life jacket. Good thing a rescue boat was near by or the results could have been fatal.
The guy with the solo cup trying to scoop water out of the sinking boat had me laughing so hard.

As funny as it is he was the only one with a brain. The others decided to scream instead.

I really hate seeing the irresponsible parents when kids have no life jackets on
I really hate it too.
The kids in the bow had life vests on. One didn’t have it fastened but they all had on vests.
And even had to search for it in the Bench storage... At least they had life jackets.
Just learn to swim
I was hoping the Trumpanzees sunk.
They are all lucky the state police was nearby. Shocking that every adult on that boat had no clue what was going on till they were already swamped.
I remember crossing a lake in a tri-hull with my two buddies and their uncle driving. We were all in the back with preservers on while the boat was nose diving into the waves. We were barely moving and the waves would crash against the windshield and wash off the sides. If uncle tried to give it any throttle the waves came up OVER the windshield and into the boat! Bad decision by uncle who convinced us it was safe to go home in the storm. What normally was a 10 minute boat ride turned into a 90 minute terror ride!
Looks like a relaxing day on the water.
This is such a ridiculous situation to put your family in. Way to go "captain"!
Or is that craptain?

It never ceases to amaze me how many people do not wear lifejackets. This clip highlights the fact how quickly a boat can sink. In this instance they were all able to put life jackets on in time and the boat doesn't appear to sink but they were lucky and it could have ended up a lot worse. Lifejackets should be worn all the time.
But what if you can swim??
My grandfather had an Egg Harbor, kids were always required to wear life jackets but adults were not. Everyone near were the life jackets were though and were easily accessible should something even seem just a little bit off.

Well I have been boating my whole life, much of it offshore from Cape Point and the east coast, there getting out through big surf. I have never worn a lifejacket nor got into any trouble at sea. I suppose I was just lucky over a thousand or so trips to sea, some of them 100 miles and more.
Adjusting the weight in your boat so that you are nose up into these waves is crucial. Move people out of the bow of the boat and trim your motors up so that on throttle the nose comes up. The best example was one of the smallest boats going through it. The 14 ft aluminum boat with two people in it both riding on the rear bench.
Yes the trump boat, those guys did it right in a boat that had no business out there in someone else’s hands.
@@cassiusdio6048 i agree, sometimes we get caught with our pants down
yeah the bow should only be used be a couple of people in CALM conditions. And I'd really like to know the passenger limit on that vessel. Just because you can fill all the seats doesn't mean that's how many passengers you can carry. I think we are getting to a point to require mandatory licenses to use a powerboat or sail. Theres just too many people buying them completely ignorant of common sense nevermind the rules.
I don't get why some of these boat manufacturers angle the bow down. Not smart.
@@cassiusdio6048 There are tuna fishing boats smaller than that SeaRay that go out in that same condition. Go ahead and let them know they 'have no business being out there".
Showed my husband. His family lived for the water every chance they got. Lake, river, reservoir, sea, ocean. FIL was navy, taught my hubs, and he got to drive all the boats at lake Powell. He said this was preventable bit you have to do it right, find that sweet spot that's not too fast not too slow, and weight distribution is always our first rule when we get in a vessel,
Everyone with a boat should watch this. Thanks.
I have traveled through the Point Pleasant canal more times than I can remember. Back around 1971 or 72, my dad took our 23 wooden inboard through the canal during a tidal rush as bad as this. We had too many on board, not enough life jackets and it scared the crap out of everyone, especially my brother who was in 2nd grade at the time. We camped out in Barnegat Bay after getting through and waited for slack tide to make it back to the Manasquan River. We did much better than this boat as ours was seaworthy. But we learned a valuable lesson. As for this video, all captain error and 100% avoidable. The captain is always responsible. Know your boat, how to operate it, its limits, the waters you seek to travel, and always be looking out for your passengers.
unfortunatly its probably long past time we required mandatory boat licensing and courses. And not something boat stores run to make it easy to get one. You know the rules or you don't. That guy could have killed those kids in chop like that despite the life jackets.
@@loganholmberg2295 Hey, if you wanna mandate things, you can pay for it too. How about since people drown in their own bathtubs we make you pass a water safety course? I'm not against safety, just more laws/government intervention I don't see working all that well. I'd be ok putting up more warning signs on boat inlets that are so clear there's no way anyone would ever miss them. You can't mandate/legislate common sense, and I think the government intervenes enough already in our lives.
Is the canal always like that? Grew up in Jersey/Toms River but didn't have a boat.

I've worked on just about every house along that canal in the 30+ yrs and I can say without question this isn't the first or last time. This canal is no joke. During tide change that little thing wouldn't have enough engine to go upstream.
The captain is always responsible. He left 4 people in front instead of moving them in the back. He didn't adjust his speed. I was out on a boat all the time as a kid. I drove our boat a lot. I knew better than that guy.
You gotta love the Mum getting rid of the Beer over the side 😂😂😂😂😂

Love the way she tips the beer away over the side so she doesn't get the inside of the boat wet 🤣
It's probably a force of habit to not get the inside wet. Lol but I get what you mean lol
I’d say pilot error. Trim up and keep more weight in the back. Hit those swells on a 45, not head on. And don’t overload the boat.
Oh yes the classic "put the lifejackets on when the boat is already sinking".
I,went on a cruise ship and they did a drill for us to put on life vests but they also said we didn’t need to wear them unless we started to sink then they would tell us to put them on 🤣🤣🤣. I’m not an idiot I wore mine the whole trip.

Great video, what camera & equipment do you use to get such good long range footage?
Now they put their life jackets on! I grew up in Fla and went fishing in the lake and on the ocean. My father knew how to read the channels, waters conditions, weather and never took chances. As soon as we stepped into the boat, life preservers went on.
its crazy to me to me that almost all of these boats are coming through trimmed all the way down. trim it up, Its an easy thing to do that can make the passage much safer, and drier
What is even more astounding is that nearly all of these morons have ZERO clue how to properly operate a watercraft, and are legally allowed to do so! Boating in America is like being in rush hour traffic with 12 year olds behind the wheel of every car!!!
If everyone knew that this channel would not exist
Just as the first cops on the scene did. Clearly they've done this before.
100% correct
Omg, the river has a very strong flow
Looks like fun trip for the family LOL
I live and grew up here. It’s in theory a no wake zone but at full rip (which it was) it’s quite sporty as the boats heading up current kick up big wake just to make headway. Traveling down current is actually more dangerous in these conditions (as this boat was). Couple that with full weekend traffic makes for some very rough conditions. Right by the bridge in that video there’s a massive hole (drops about 15 feet). In this case, definitely captain error. Wrong boat for the conditions, and you definitely don’t slow down. Best bet coming into a trough is to kick the speed up a bit to get the bow up. And you definitely get everyone off the bow, to keep weight towards the stern. I find it rough in my 21’ Mako, which is far more seaworthy than that thing, and my kids are life jacketed always.
For the second boat, should that have been going faster then? To stay on top on the waves? Seems like it would be challenging with a no wake zone, but then if everyone made wakes the water would be even worse. BTW legit questions, I mostly do lakes. Just asking to learn something.
A former marine state police told me once, it is technically no wake (you can get a ticket for traveling at speed), but at least down current you’re not going to make much wake, and you are allowed to handle your boat safely, even if it does create some wake. In general, it’s the up current boats that generate the swell you see, and I get it, as you can get pushed around by the waves, so you need some power for control. Edit: As for the second boat, assuming you mean the Key West, yes you do need to bump the throttle to kick the bow up. Slowing down, as he did, can actually hurt. It’s not a constant higher speed, but instead working the throttle to keep control.
The boat is full of water before anybody has even looked for a flotation device. Leave your lake boats at home.
Yep. Love the one dude that was more interested in retrieving the ice chest than getting the kids in life jackets. Wonder how many of those kids will never get on a boat again after this experience? Same for next boat with kids upfront screaming.

Nothing has to do the vessel, it’s all about the Captain only amateurs will say “it’s a lake boat”
@@gonzaloviglino2305 it matters not if you call a that Sea Ray a lake boat or a river boat or a pond boat This low bow boat was designed for small water not these conditions. That is an absurdly difficult sea state for that size and configuration of boat, it is too easy for a less than expert operator to stuff it. Not an area I am familiar with, but I grew up on an island in Southeast Alaska and am very familiar with boats. I would agree with most here that this was captain error. No matter who is at fault or what caused it, I always find it neat to see these neat (very expensive) police, CG, marine patrol boats speed to a scene. Even my local SeaTow is a great part to a rescue. And can't forget near by civilian boats often ready to assist and often the closest ones.

The alumacraft reminds me on a storm on a 15 mile long lake in a 15 ft princecraft and a mercury 9.9 hp.. waves on lac poutrincourt were bigger. Lol
What does reversing it do in this situation?? Would it be better to trim up And throttle up to get the bow up? Or is it too late at this point for trimming up and throttle up?
Any boat that has a downward sloping bow belongs only in a stupid design museum
Captain is ALWAYS responsible for the crew/passengers. He could of stopped before the 2nd stuffing and moved those kids to the stern and trimmed up his engine.
Actually you would want to trim the engines down to raise the bow , If he had trim tabs they should be in the up position in these conditions

The guys in the trump boat remind me of the time a buddy and I went out the mouth of the puyallup river, into the sound, got completely 100% wet in about 10 seconds, kept going out for a minute or so, then turned around and surfed back in, between two waves, with the bow about an inch from being submerged into the wave at the tip of the bow…basically our bow was right at the trough of the wave, for quite some distance…suuuuper sketch..the weather was bad that day…
You where lucky.

TOTALY Captain error! Trim all the way down when it should have been up keeping the bow up and no clue of how to handle wake. This guy has NO business being on the water!
I agree 100% : unless someone has decades of experience on the water, then they have no business on the water getting experience... only the experienced should be allowed to experience!
@@TRUCKER_TRUCKER your point is valid as the only way to get experience is through action. That boat should have been trimmed up and passengers should have been in the rear.
