Such a great rivalry with so many great races and championships. Probably the best rivalry ever along with Senna and Prost!

    • +GR27george1 ofcourse its not. Do you think people drive f1 till their 60? and do you think technology doesn't advance? I'd find it weird if it stayed the same and if someone in their 60's was driving

    • +quachimba the problem is today's f1 regulations stiffles the exciting rivalries and creativity in car designs compared the previous years, and compared to innovativity we've seen in lemans and many touring cars championshis today f1 is lagging behind.......

    • +GR27george1 F1 died with the ridiculous anti-Schumacher rules around 2005. I stopped watching soon as Schumi retired in 2006. Lawn mower race today are a total joke. It is dead and nothing will bring it back in this new politically correct insane society we live in.

  • Michael Schumacher: “Mika Hakkinen was the best opponent (I’ve had) in terms of his quality, but the biggest admiration I had for him was we had 100% fight on track but a totally disciplined life off track. We respected each other highly and let each other live quietly.”

    • Yeah it was too great drivers who pushed each other to their limits but ultimately when it came down to it, they respected each other and that added to an already very special rivalry

  • What I liked about Hakkinen is that he never complained when he got beaten by Schumacher. And of course Schumacher never complained when it was the other way around. That's why their rivalry was so good and enjoyable to watch. All other drivers cried a lot, especially Coulthard. To me that's the most annoying aspect of today's F1. Today, almost all the drivers whine about everything.

    @nourishmastery@nourishmastery8 жыл бұрын
    • +MySubtleMind Coulthard crying and whining? Oh please, David was a gentleman and still is. And we all remember how Ferrari forced all Schumacher's teammates to let him pass in front a few of his championships were won that way. How many times Irvine or Barichello were forced to do that? Remember Austria 2001? Or when Baricello cried when Schumi has mugged him the victory in US? That is not a sport, that is some fucking comedia del'arte. Coulthard and Hakkinen were competing each other to be the numero 1 in the team, while at Ferrari Schumacher and his team-mates didn't.

  • In all fairness in 2000 Mclaren's unreliability cost Mika the championship...but still great rivals and great times

    • That was 2001 not 2000 but still a valid point.

    • SanFranFanAD actually it was in 2000 (the engine failure in Austria and Oil leak in Brazil caused DNF for Mika and Schumi won both of those first 2 races, so it already put Mika quite far and that engine failure in USA was the nail in the coffin)....2001 Mclaren wasnt even fast enough to compete with Ferrari.

      @Balnazzardi@Balnazzardi8 жыл бұрын
    • +Balnazzardi Actually.. it was the previous year that Schumacher broke his leg that let Mika conquer another championship, if you remember the car was so good that Irvine almost conquer the championship against Mika! Next year with Schumi in his usual form and Ferrari with the upper hand on the previous year they started writing their era and legend. That being said, if McLaren Mercedes hadn't been forced to redesign and forbidden to innovate with their engine as they did the previous couple years in favour of the Reds that era may have taken quite a bit longer to establish for the Reds and may not even had been one either..

      @TheGel73@TheGel738 жыл бұрын
    • +Balnazzardi whilst that is true Schumacher actually had more retirements in 2000

      @sanfranfanad@sanfranfanad8 жыл бұрын
    • +SanFranFanAD The string of DNF's allowed Mika to gain in the championship after falling back by 26 points. MSC had two start crashes (much like Alonso in 2012 which ultimately caused the Spaniard to concede WDC to Vettel) and mechanical failures at Monaco and France. Mika's first half of the season was far from impressive as he was often outperformed by DC, however Mika took the upper hand towards the end.

  • This was one of the greatest rivalries in F1 history and it went largely unnoticed. But these two were very equally matched, very skilled and had great respect for each other. I think the respect is why it went unnoticed since other rivalries have been very bitter.

    @YodaOnDMT@YodaOnDMT8 жыл бұрын
    • they enjoyed racing against each other and you could see it in their level of competition they were always trying to best the other and didn't have any issues with each other other rivalries tend to get very bitter and thus the drivers don't respect each other

      @shariqnaeem9308@shariqnaeem93088 жыл бұрын
    • +Yoda on DMT In many of the races Häkkinen and Schumacher were so much quicker than their team mates that it was almost embarrassing to watch. Both had the unique ability to push at 100% through an entire race. Or like MSC commented after one of the Suzuka races, "we (he and Häkkinen) crammed out 40+ qualifying laps. The other guys just cruised around."

  • This, in my opinion, was the greatest motorsports rivalry of all time. It was during a special time for formula 1, involving special drivers and special manufacturers. Pure talent, pure chaos, pure racing. Nothing more, nothing less. Yes I am biased because this all happened when I was a child and I understand many will say "Prost vs. Senna" or "Lauda vs Hunt" etc. All of those were wonderful, but again, that's the point of MY opinion. And get well Michael!

  • Mighty mighty battles between 2 of the best F1 warriors ever seen and through which I was privileged to have the chance to live in their times and see in action. 2000 season will be the one I will never forget, saw EVERY race and EVERY victory and the Japanese race when Schumi lifted the title for Ferrari was one of the happiest and joyful days of my life :) It was a shame that their battle didn't go full length in '99 when he had that crash at Silverstone and then didn't go on for years more after 2001 when Mika called it a day. But I savoured the moments we had them together on track and what fun and adventure it was. What we badly need to see now in F1 is Red Bull or Ferrari (or even McLaren come back to winning ways again) improve their packages and take the fight to Mercedes, we've seen the Merc inter-team battle between Hammy and Rosberg now for 3 years now. Apart from Nico having the upper hand this season, it's getting rather same-ish and 1-sided and another team challenging for the title is what we need to see to spice things up and cause a bit more of a stir.

I am not a huge GP fan, but i was rivetted. First Haki went out set the fastest lap, came back in and chilled. Schui then went out and incredibly beat Haks time by a 1000th of a second! Hak then went out again and unbelievably went faster again by another couple of thousandth's!! This carried on for several more laps, each driver eeking out their lead by the most ridiculously miniscule time intervals. I watched in total awe and realised that these two drivers were at the top of their game, at the time, and were pushing at the very limit of what was humanly possible. Astonishing!

Antes, se pilotaba con paciencia y el acoso inducía al error, ahí se veía a los grandes y los diferenciaba de los demás por su talento. All the excitement that we live with the rivalry of these two great drivers would be nothing if the DRS had existed in those times. Before, they piloted with patience and harassment induced error, the greats differed from the others by his talent.

Michael would become champion, but he had a issue in Silverstone too. The fact that even Eddie fought for the championship is a proof for that argument.

    • +quachimba pushing a drs button and tires which don't let the drivers show who is the best on the most limit for the longest time (because the tires would be cooked after half a lap) .. has become more a show then racing for me... and I want see racing not show...

      @NoNameLeft1500@NoNameLeft15008 жыл бұрын
    • i guess you just don't understand... If it was one driver getting it... I can understand your point and i would agree with you it takes away from the sportsmanship of the race. The whole point here is everyone gets it. In that sense it is just another added thing they have to consider and think about. Everything is equal so pushing a drs button or not isn't the point.. They push buttons for brake bias too .. that's not the point. the playing field hasn't become uneven. So it's not how you described it.. They have certain zones they can only use them in and in those zones they are usually straights... So just like a driver can get on the gas a bit earlier in the last turn before a straight and gain the advantage it's the same here.. they wait to get out of the last turn and into the drs zone and hit it at the right time. Pls it's not a boost of any sort like the Audi TT cup has. IT's an adjustment just like brake bias or the anti roll bars or camber etc. You are just changing one flap at the rear there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. and takes away from none of the racing. I find your opinion of it being a show shows that you don't understand F1 and racing at all if you seriously think drs is a show.

    • +quachimba adjusting brake bias or antiroll bars and such things.. are allowed always at all places.. the thing with drs is .. it is only allowed at a specific place and the bigger impact is... it is only allowed for the guy who is following a car withing a second... if the guy in front would be also allowed to use it.. I wouldn't have any problem with it... but since it is only allowed for the guy behind... it doesn't matter for example if the guy in front can get out of the turn a bit better because the guy behind just drives by with his flaps opened... in the past planing an overtake took laps.. you had to analize and try .. you needed to put the guy in front into a compromising situation.. and took advantage.. you need an instinct for the gap that is opening into a turn... yes that might be booring for casual viewers who just want to see anything happen.. but it was amazing in terms of racecraft.. also an overtake was a spectacular thing.. like it should be... the guy behind was working hard for it.. and the guy in front was working hard to not let it happen... now the guy behind just need to be close.. push the button and drives by.. another big problem are the tires... if the tires could hold driving on the limit.. then the guy in front might still have a chance.. if he just can handle driving on the limit better for a longer time... but now that would kill the tires and he wouldn't have any chance in a race then... I would be fine with drs allowed for overtaking lapped cars.. but not allowed in a battle for position you said the playing field hasn't become uneven.. that is the problem... it has to be uneven for racing.. that is what determines racing... the thing that there are people that can race better at the limit then others.. also that there are cars that are able to be driven faster then others is a big point of f1.. for example in the past you had 2 fast guys in 2 fast cars.. it was clear that the championship should be between those 2 drivers and cars... now you can't even say who is fast.. you can only say who can save tires better and which car is able to save tires better... you don't need a good overtaking driver for that because.. it doesn't matter anylonger because if the guy is not a good overtaker he still can overtake because of drs... tires you can drive on the limit and no overtaking aids like drs.. and f1 would be great again... yes it would be booring for casual viewers.. but it would be great for seeing real racecraft again.. I also wouldn't mind something like a push to pass button or boost or so...(like the kers in the past) ... if the drivers can use it how they want.. so also the guy in front can use it to make the gap bigger.. or what ever... or lets say.. something like you have 8 boosts available in a race.. how you use them is up to you... totally fine for me... but something like only people who are a second behind a car are allowed to use it is just trying to artificial bring the field closer together.. which is just wrong for racing... it is ok for gaming like mariokart or so.. where the drivers at the back get better items... so you have a fun time together.. but for real racing it's just wrong.. for example in 2004 or so.. yes you often saw them driving behind each other for lap after lap after lap after lap... but that ment both were driving on the edge without making mistakes.. and that is a skill... and if someone then even managed to overtake the other guy.. wooow what a spectacular thing.. it was amazing... it ment either he got the guy infront to make a mistake.. or he planned it for laps and waited to the moment were it was the right time and situation to make it happen... that is racing

  • I miss the old times in F1, when I was just a little guy watching those incredible battles on the track. This was the real F1, oh how I miss that...The last amazing F1 season was 2008 in my opinion...After that, I keep watching in a hope that maybe one day it will become the same as it used to be 10 years ago, but it is getting worse every year. To begin, the V6 turbo engine does not make a real F1 sound (it is not even close to the 80's V6 turbo) , and it is an indispensable detail in a show like F1.

  • The only thing you can say about Michael's career is, that he had no really big rival. Sure, Mika was great. But think about Senna and Schumacher in the same team. Whow!

    @DaveMcIroy@DaveMcIroy8 жыл бұрын
    • +DaveMcIroy Yes but Senna would not have let this happen unless Michael had a better car. To me, it wouldn't have made that much difference in their respective careers as by the time that this scenario was a possibility, Senna's career had peaked and Michael's was headed for the stratosphere....

  • McLaren was better car in the beginning of the seasons -98 and -99, but later Ferrari took the lead. Häkkinen was just a brillint and maybe the fastest driver ever at his best. In 2001 he has lost his motivation which is understanable. You could say "if Häkkinen had been a Ferrari driver since -97, he would have won every year's titel til end of season 2004. But formula 1 is not driver against driver but the whole teams including teammates against each other. Everything has to work together and Michael wasn't as fast as Mika at his best, but Schumi had a awesome team and temamates who were 100 per cent behind him. In track&field you can talk about who is the fastest runner, but in F1 you have to sum together all parts of the team. Schumi succeeded to do that and that's the reason why he has 7 titel and is maybe the best driver ever (still not the fastest one).

    • Totally agree with you regarding Hakkinen being perhaps the most naturally gifted Formula 1 driver of them all. When he was motivated, none was faster. His technique was simply sublime. If you can, go back and watch the old A1 Ring races from the late 90s, where nobody could live with Hakkinen through the final two corners. Also, you're right to point out the advantages that Schumacher had over him with his Ferrari setup. Having a team mate that is not allowed to compete with you always gave him a massive advantage. Just think if Coulthard always had to defer to Hakkinen. I think Hakkinen would have won 2000 as well, no problem, making it 3 titles in a row. That being said, Schumacher's performance at the new Malaysian circuit in 1999, upon his return after his leg break, was one of the best performances I have ever seen from a racing driver. The track unfamiliarity, as well as him having to effectively race 2 races - one for himself and the other to ensure that Eddie Irvine got maximum points - and him driving rings around everyone, including Hakkinen, was perhaps his best ever performance.
