Corruption, Cocaine and Murder in Trinidad
Subscribe to VICE News here: bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News
Around midnight on May 3, Dana Seetahal, a prominent attorney and former senator in Trinidad and Tobago, had just left a casino in the capital of Port of Spain when her vehicle was stopped by another car blocking the road. A van pulled up alongside and let loose a burst of gunfire, killing her in a well orchestrated hit.
Her murder was one of approximately 170 that have occurred in the Caribbean nation so far this year, putting it on course for one of the highest murder rates in the world. The country saw only 93 murders in 1999. Last year, there were 407.
VICE News visited the slums of Port of Spain and spoke with police, activists, community leaders, and gangsters to understand the country's decade-plus spike in killings. Many of the murders are attributed to ruthless and politically connected street gangs who control territories that are sometimes no larger than a city block. The gangs fight over lucrative government contracts meant to provide social services and combat unemployment.
But gang violence is merely a symptom of a bigger problem. Trinidad has become an important stop for drugs headed to West Africa and the United States. Many observers point to "the big fish" - the nameless political and business elites who are behind drug trafficking and the culture of endemic corruption and murder that come with it. They are accused of turning a country rich in oil and gas deposits into their own personal narco-state, fostering impunity through a web of bribes and murders. Unlike the profits from the energy industry, however, this phenomenon trickles all the way down to the street level.

It has worsened severely. The murder toll is 200+ for this year so far, up to today there were many protests scattered around the entire country. Port Of Spain (the capital) San Fernando and so much more places. It's chaos
police caught on camera murdering 3 men in morvant ,car carrying the three victims where ordered to stop and the occupants were told to stick there hands through the window ,upon complying with said instructions police opened fire killing the occupants of the vehicle

Trinidad has gotten worst since then, every single mother who have more than one son has surely had to bury at least
About the same.
20:15 it's so weird that it's the killer who's telling me everything I wanted to know.
I went to Trinidad with my girlfriend almost two years ago now. Stayed right in Port of Spain, it wasn't THAT bad we wandered around, met some really nice people, even went downtown to the main market street where we were literally the only white people and it just felt like a busy bustling city. We even met some guys while waiting for the Ferry to Tobago who said they were part of some gang, and gave us tips where to not go and stay away from east city. Everywhere you go in the world there will be bad spots and people you don't want to get involved with, you just need to know and follow your gut, obviously going to places like Iraq or Somalia would be dumb, but places with reputations such as this, don't let it fear you.
That's every country bro. But in all honesty, Somalia is not bad, I would say 90% of the country is peaceful.. The civil war stopped 2006, don't believe everything you hear or see on the news. Book yourself a holiday there and you will see it's absolutely beautiful and peaceful.. ✌✊💯 🇸🇴🇸🇴
Brother you are being unfair to these countries ( SOMALIA IRAQ ) do some research your own research
Strongfp I'm glad you didn't believe the bullshit, hype and fear this video may instill in others. Trinidad is mostly peaceful and just like many other places contains good and bad. And another thing; they always lump all the murders together making it seem that all are 'gang' related or drug related when many times they stems from domestic disputes, neighborhood disputes, land disputes, old grievances, minor fallings-out turned fatal, unintentional rum fuelled murders and family squabbles.

jamaica has a bigger population so that's why Trinidad is seen as more violent, our federal government has labeled trinidad as the most dangerous country in the Caribbean
I went this year and had a wonderful time. Perfectly safe. I think there is a huge class divide in T&T. There are all the middle class and wealthy neighborhoods and upscale malls and restaurants, clubs, parties, all the beaches, nature and countryside etc. Then you have the ghettos of Lavantille, Morvant, Sea Lots and Beetham with a totally different environment. Judging the whole of T&T by those areas would be like judging the whole of the USA by its many violent inner cities and meth filled trailer parks. T&T is the wealthiest nation in the English Speaking Caribbean because of the oil, gas, manufacturing, trade and finance sectors, it does not even have to depend on tourism like other islands (though it gets lots of visitors for Carnival) but there is deep wealth inequality and corruption. There is also unbridled immigration from other poorer Caribbean islands.

I went back to Trinidad for 14 months last year, from the UK , the fact of the matter is this documentary is spot on. Sometimes patriotism blinds us to the negative aspects of our country the facts speak for themselves ie. Trinidad with 1.5 million people has a higher murder rate than Britain with 62 million people, This year there is already 189 murders and its only the 6th of June, romanticism of our country leads to a denial of reality.
whats caused it and what are the politicians doing about it and what is the society at large doing to hold the politician accountable

That man, Spanish, seems a little sketchy and I don't entirely buy his claims of being only a 'community leader'. But gang leader or not, he is a positive force in an otherwise hopeless situation.
That's what the women was saying he is probably a drug dealer or somehow involved but it seems he is the only positive guy in the area
Remember what Yasin, leader of the Muslim faction, said about how *everyone* is involved? Police, politicians, government contracted workers, etc. Although, maybe it's cynical to insinuate that Spanish is in some way involved in all the corruption and turf wars.

My colleagues, friends, old school mates in Blue Range, Cascade, St. Anns, Westmoorings, Trinicity, Palmiste, Sando and Penal, all professionals, family men and women also never had violent run-ins with crime. Minor attempted burglaries and car break-ins which happens even in the US, UK and Canada may happen from time to time. Simply put there are TWO Trinidad divided down the middle by class. They don't usually overlap. If you are not living in the depressed areas or are involved in any illegal activity or Government bobal that can lead to being snuffed out, chances are your day goes on with little incident, save the minor misfortunes that could happen anywhere in the world. It's like judging all of Chicago by just the South Side or all of LA by Compton, which would be silly.
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
alieninthecaribbean its always good to get some perspective from a local with another POV thanks!
You're welcome alien brain.
@OhMyyNatural well said
"if your kidney is cancerous, and you ignore it to focus on the healthy parts, you will die. And the nation is dying because we're treating a part of us like it will dry up and go away." That is probably the realest shit I've ever heard. There is no better metaphor. Like damn.
Corruption corrupts absolutely. Sad as sad can be.
All I needed to see was the Freemasonic symbolism, and connection.
my family is from Trinidad and Tobago, and every year we go back it's always beautiful and peaceful, I've never knew this was going on
My family is too would you ever consider living there?
definitely, i love going there every year
Omari Monyé Truth III definitely, i love going there every year
I went this year and had a wonderful time. Judging the whole of T&T by those areas would be like judging the whole of the USA by its inner cities and trailer parks.
Becuase your considered a "yourist"
In my experience when you have to ask, “should I be scared right now?” … the answer is always YES!
Me being from the Caribbean , love how i can understand every word

Thanks for the episode of Cops, Trinidad, Vice News.
I noticed that the people of trinidad looks pretty intelligent. even the gang members have some really important story to share with us all. That last part was really deep. My prayers go out to these people, it's a shame their country is affected like this. i hope someday it will change.
Speaking truthfully it isn't as bad as it's depicted here. The majority of Trinidad is safe for the most part. There are only a few areas that are really violent against one another though gangs.
Prayers sent,,and pray for genocide going on in Chicago, Illinois USA
Albert ShitSneeze it will never change thanks to our dumbass crooked president and jackass prime minister dr keith jackass rowley
