Corruption, Cocaine and Murder in Trinidad

Around midnight on May 3, Dana Seetahal, a prominent attorney and former senator in Trinidad and Tobago, had just left a casino in the capital of Port of Spain when her vehicle was stopped by another car blocking the road. A van pulled up alongside and let loose a burst of gunfire, killing her in a well orchestrated hit.
Her murder was one of approximately 170 that have occurred in the Caribbean nation so far this year, putting it on course for one of the highest murder rates in the world. The country saw only 93 murders in 1999. Last year, there were 407.
VICE News visited the slums of Port of Spain and spoke with police, activists, community leaders, and gangsters to understand the country's decade-plus spike in killings. Many of the murders are attributed to ruthless and politically connected street gangs who control territories that are sometimes no larger than a city block. The gangs fight over lucrative government contracts meant to provide social services and combat unemployment.
But gang violence is merely a symptom of a bigger problem. Trinidad has become an important stop for drugs headed to West Africa and the United States. Many observers point to "the big fish" - the nameless political and business elites who are behind drug trafficking and the culture of endemic corruption and murder that come with it. They are accused of turning a country rich in oil and gas deposits into their own personal narco-state, fostering impunity through a web of bribes and murders. Unlike the profits from the energy industry, however, this phenomenon trickles all the way down to the street level.

Nine years on and the crime, corruption and murder rates have erupted further and gangs have increased x10. The politicians(PNM & UNC), the rich and upper levels of law enforcement are corrupt and they are in charge so there’s no end in sight! God help Trinidad 🇹🇹. 😢😢😢🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️😢😢😢

    • @@YoungBlood507 I just think the translator was likely not a Trinidadian person. I imagine it's difficult for someone who hasn't spent significant time living in Trinidad to understand Trinidadian-English, since our population is relatively small, and there isn't the same robustness of resources for non-Trinidadian speakers to learn Trinidadian English as there might be for a standard-English speaker to learn say Spanish or German.

Stayed right in Port of Spain, it wasn't THAT bad we wandered around, met some really nice people, even went downtown to the main market street where we were literally the only white people and it just felt like a busy bustling city. We even met some guys while waiting for the Ferry to Tobago who said they were part of some gang, and gave us tips where to not go and stay away from east city. Everywhere you go in the world there will be bad spots and people you don't want to get involved with, you just need to know and follow your gut, obviously going to places like Iraq or Somalia would be dumb, but places with reputations such as this, don't let it fear you.

And another thing; they always lump all the murders together making it seem that all are 'gang' related or drug related when many times they stems from domestic disputes, neighborhood disputes, land disputes, old grievances, minor fallings-out turned fatal, unintentional rum fuelled murders and family squabbles.

  • I went this year and had a wonderful time. Perfectly safe. I think there is a huge class divide in T&T. There are all the middle class and wealthy neighborhoods and upscale malls and restaurants, clubs, parties, all the beaches, nature and countryside etc. Then you have the ghettos of Lavantille, Morvant, Sea Lots and Beetham with a totally different environment. Judging the whole of T&T by those areas would be like judging the whole of the USA by its many violent inner cities and meth filled trailer parks. T&T is the wealthiest nation in the English Speaking Caribbean because of the oil, gas, manufacturing, trade and finance sectors, it does not even have to depend on tourism like other islands (though it gets lots of visitors for Carnival) but there is deep wealth inequality and corruption. There is also unbridled immigration from other poorer Caribbean islands.

Sometimes patriotism blinds us to the negative aspects of our country the facts speak for themselves ie. Trinidad with 1.5 million people has a higher murder rate than Britain with 62 million people, This year there is already 189 murders and its only the 6th of June, romanticism of our country leads to a denial of reality.

  • That man, Spanish, seems a little sketchy and I don't entirely buy his claims of being only a 'community leader'. But gang leader or not, he is a positive force in an otherwise hopeless situation.

    • Remember what Yasin, leader of the Muslim faction, said about how *everyone* is involved? Police, politicians, government contracted workers, etc. Although, maybe it's cynical to insinuate that Spanish is in some way involved in all the corruption and turf wars.

I appreciate the honesty here because we all admire ppl who turn their hobby into a passion but it's still a job and with that comes pressure, stress, bad days, fatigue etc

  • This is showing one side of Trinidad and Tobago and admittedly it is awful. However, I lived and worked in Wooodbrook for donkey years. As a female, I felt safe walking to and from my office and apartment, even at night. Never had a single incident. My colleagues, friends, old school mates in Blue Range, Cascade, St. Anns, Westmoorings, Trinicity, Palmiste, Sando and Penal, all professionals, family men and women also never had violent run-ins with crime. Minor attempted burglaries and car break-ins which happens even in the US, UK and Canada may happen from time to time. Simply put there are TWO Trinidad divided down the middle by class. They don't usually overlap. If you are not living in the depressed areas or are involved in any illegal activity or Government bobal that can lead to being snuffed out, chances are your day goes on with little incident, save the minor misfortunes that could happen anywhere in the world. It's like judging all of Chicago by just the South Side or all of LA by Compton, which would be silly.

Judging the whole of T&T by those areas would be like judging the whole of the USA by its inner cities and trailer parks.
