Will China's NIO Be the First Real 'Tesla Killer'?
NIO is the latest electric vehicle-maker to earn the aspirational label of "Tesla Killer." As the fastest growing EV company in China, it has a legitimate shot given that China is the biggest purchaser of EVs worldwide. However, just two years ago, NIO was almost bankrupt--a common problem in this nascent sector. In order to truly become the "Chinese Tesla," NIO will first have to fend off hundreds of EV rivals closer to home.

In 2009, Toyota came very close to being a Big 3 killer. Gas prices were over $4 a gallon, American cars were less reliable as well and worth nothing at trade in (especially SUVs and trucks) and credit was very scarce at the time. The Toyota Camry sedan came very close to dethroning the entire F Series lineup in sales and Toyota actually easily outsold the Ford brand for the first time in US history, and the government had to employ a Cash For Clunkers program to move domestic metal along with a bailout for GM and Chrysler. Then there was a government backed witch hunt against Toyota with Sudden Unintended Acceleration (SUA), that was later never proven and almost certainly driver error for virtually all of the cases, but the damage to Toyota's reputation was done along with billions in fines and settlements and the Big 3 got a little breathing room until gas prices came back down. The Big 3 made more fuel efficient vehicles including compact SUVs and Americans fell back in love and then some anyway with SUVs and pickups...

NIO Stock has Flatlined & not moving at all 3/2022
Nio is already expanding in Europe.
It's just super impressive that they've got a working battery swapping system running in China
Battery swap is a bad idea.
Battery swap works in the short term when there are few EVs and most people live in apartments. But when there are millions of EVs there are going to be problems. Let's say each swap station replaces a gas station, since only one car at a time can be swapped it's like having a gas station with a single pump, resulting in long lines negating the speed of battery swapping. If you are the 10th car in line you are going to be waiting 50 minutes. I would rather wait 20 minutes at a super charger for 80% charge. Also, in the space taken up by one battery swap station you can have a dozen super chargers.
@@tonii5690 agreed it's the same for handphone not too long ago. With EV caution is needed to ensure proper grounding. Besides batteries will degrade so will performance having this helps small business startups
@@tonii5690 you can charge your Nio as well. Battery swapping is another option. There are few charging ports at the Nio Swapping Station.
@@tonii5690 You dont need battery swap for the EV to run. You still can charge it yourself. Swap station should not replace gas station. Charging point should replace gas station.
If NIO's batter swapping model becomes the standard, that will be a game-changer.
It won't. A few reasons; more chargers than changers (drive further to find a changer), infrastructure costs much more (who will pay for it?), battery change advantage reduced if there is a queue (and no queue to charge), need to get the correct battery, charging speed and range continues to improve, pointless after autonomy (car can go and charge up).
@@goldreserve If you are low on gas you need a gas station, right? Swapping stations only need a fraction of the space of a gas station due to equipment scaling, so can have more density. Changing batteries will be a fraction of the time as topping up your tank or recharging your battery. You do not lose the the option to charge up at home/at night/while parked. Once electric reaches critical density, swapping will be the way to go.
@@goldreserve same for petrol/diesel topup station. EV are meant to replace petrol/diesel vehicle.
@@goldreserve this could work if they built it into parking garages, especially at hotels. You get the option to charge your battery or swap out before your long journey ahead
The swap wins when vehicle body outlasts the 1M mile battery. e.g. In a semi customers won't want to replace the truck body just because the battery needs replacing.
In short, no, it won’t be a Tesla killer.
Tata will be the Tesla killer lmao 😉

How can renting the battery possibly be cheaper, the best case scenario is the same. It makes sense for the battery swap thing but the notion that is makes the cost of the car cheaper is a blatant lie. What happens when you reach the point that you finish paying the shell? You still have to the rent the battery and there's no savings because you've been doing that the entire time.
You can have both options not to mention that China has way more charging stations then in the US.
It reduces the retail price by $10 k. In addition, it allows you to lease a standard battery for daily use and swap it for a more powerful battery (more expensive) for long travels.
If you have driven any electric or hybrid car, you will know the battery capacity deteriote over time. And changing the battery can sometimes cost half of the car.. If your country subsidize ev sales.

Every EV will sell at least until 50% of the car market will be electric. Then we may see competition between EV makers, taking market share from each other, but not before. 👍
I think you're overestimating EV demand - I like electric; they're nippy to drive and super quiet. But even in rich Norway, where an EV is often the cheapest option, EV hasn't climbed above 40% of new car sales. Batteries and charging needs to get a lot better and cheaper before the big mainstream will move over to electric.

I love how we're all vexed by "Tesla killer"
hey crazy! My city
new Tesla S comes with over 1000hp....do we need so much waste of energy for going from A-B ?
Battery as a service is one of Nio's most revolutionary innovations. It works well in metropolitan areas like Shanghai and Beijing where everyone lives in apartment buildings and it's important for taking long trips across the country. It also lowers the purchase price and the subscription service provides a revenue stream for Nio over the lifetime of the vehicle. But I think the biggest long term benefits of BaaS, the thing that will motivate buyers to choose Nio rather than another carmaker, will be in two other areas: first, it will allow the car to upgrade its battery as battery technology rapidly changes and two, it will help the resale value. Customers don't like to purchase technology that becomes obsolete in 6 months, and they know obsolete technology doesn't sell when you want to get rid of it. Planned obsolescence will be a thing of the past. Designing for upgradability will be the key to winning over new customers and retaining them, especially for rapidly changing technologies to win public acceptance.
fundamental problems exist for battery swaping. Nio went to battery swapping as a solution for slow charging speeds. what happens when Teslas and other cars have their charging speed and decrease battery cost? most people will tolerate waiting only a few more minuets if it means they dont have to pay nearly 200$ a month for the privilege to battery swap 6 times a month. i also dont think it will scale as well as supercharger stalls. you can have 12 or 20 stalls at a supercharger station while their will be a 5 minuet wait for every car at the swap station if congestion ever becomes a problem. Nio will have to build 9 battery packs for every swapping station when Tesla just needs to hook up a bunch of cheap stalls, they just started production of a new supercharger factory near Shanghai with an output capacity of 10,000 stalls a year.
0:25 "last 10 decades" lol
