Welcome to Part 2 of my Comprehensive Beginner's Guide to RimWorld, a 3-part series intended to teach new players or those struggling with the Core game (no expansions) everything they need to know to do well! This episode focuses on how to plan your base, with detailed discussions of what, why, and how to build and arrange all sorts of different types of rooms. It also includes discussions about mood, efficient kitchens, crafting, and more!
As with part 1, this video is up to date with the 1.3.3287 version of the game as of Spring 2022, and does not include either of the expansions and only a limited number of mods, which are listed in Part 1.

  • it is also useful to use the "pause when satisfied" option on the "Do until you have X" command. for example, if you have 10 colonist, and you like to have 4 meals per colonist, that meant 40 meals. when those 40 meals drop to 39, the cook will rush to make another 4, then right after they start doing something else, someone will eat a meal and they need to go again, then again, then again. it's not so productive. instead you can set the pause when satisfied option, and set it to let say 30. this way, only when the 40 meals drop below 30, the cook will go and start cooking. and cook a couple of batches at once.

  • 26:33 My own personal experience. If you have workers who go out in mine, or far out of colony tasks. Leave wooden tables n stools outside. If you have workers mining, have a table n stools brought next to the mine. So they can have a small break and eat. Get somewhat positive mood, then get back to work. Hunters I don't worry about their opinions, they come back with their haul. And if hungry, dining rooms there. Construction workers who are building rooms. Depending how far and what they are doing. I'll do the same wooden table n stools. Unless they are in the crafting room. Making trade goods or better quality furniture and the like.

  • I personally find that most crops do not need to be kept in a freezer. This can shrink your 'kitchen' freezer to as little as a 2x3 space with some shelves with strict filters (thank you 1.4!), and you can make a butcher shop+freezer elsewhere for animal processing. Most crops are usually best kept in a cool storage barn, which will naturally freeze during winter and extend its life further during non-growing seasons. If, despite that, the food expires, you probably weren't going to use it anyway and are probably bloating your wealth value by overstocking. For the butcher shop, small animals can be processed immediately since their meat is more tile efficient, while larger carcasses can hang in the meatlocker and be butchered on an as-need basis since they produce more than 1 tile of meat. Freezer bloat not only is more power-hungry, but it can also bloat your wealth value or even cause issues if it chokes up on unused food and your meat goes to other zones to spoil. Also, good planning tip: Big fookin potato field. it just simply works anywhere short of an ice sheet. nitpicking fertility zones and growing rice on a tile-by-tile basis will get you by, but not fill a pantry.

    @zourin8804@zourin8804 Жыл бұрын
    • Very good points! Thinking back to most of my games, the only times I've had crops go to waste was when I grew way too much of them anyways, but your comment goes to show that there are lots of little efficiencies you can incorporate into your game. Very nice!!

      @salendrak@salendrak Жыл бұрын
  • I have a bunch of tips (barracks are actually OP, mostly don't need a freezer, lavish bug meals, etc), but the big one I use for base planning is using blocks that are 13x13 (including walls). It is big enough to be spacious but not too big that it requires columns to hold a roof. It will fit 2 research benches with a door in the middle on any side, or any other production or research bench with enough space for a melee block at a door. It also fits a full hydroponics setup (based on a single sunlamp). The only downside is that it doesn't quite encapsulate a whole orbital trade beacon... but they don't really take much in terms of resources... at worst you have 2. Not a bad compromise for having having a base where you can easily change where rooms are if you realize that your rooms/base layout needs to change.

    @MeAMuse@MeAMuse11 ай бұрын
    • Yeah, I think Adam vs Everything and many other players favor 13x13 rooms too. I find them a big big for my aesthetic preferences, but for functionality they're great!

  • I unfortunately get very overwhelmed by the prospect of planning everything out in advance and try to get a small shelter up first with freezer, a barracks and some production. It ends up not being very pretty, but from that shelter, as I unlock more technologies I can prepare both technology and resources to realize what I will need for the playthrough and how to plan it out, making an entirely new base from that little outpost. Think barracks for workers as thry built a larger building. But if you can plan everything out in advance, that is likely to be a better idea in general. Just wanted to mention what I do incase it helps someone else who gets stuck with decision paralysis. Also. I don't know if chemfuel was a thing when you made the video. But insect meat is perfect for chemfuel production. Works as well as most other organic matter, and no one wants to eat it anyways and it doesn't sell for much. Same thing for if you come across human meat.

    @alicesundelin3094@alicesundelin30945 ай бұрын
    • Sometimes I forego planning altogether, which results in a very organic development of the base and can lead to some interesting results. Sometimes I'll re-build entire areas, but that's all part of the story! And good point about the insect meat! I usually just turn it into kibble for my livestock, but chemfuel is another great use for it!

    @jltslade2291@jltslade2291 Жыл бұрын
    • So there's really no hard and fast rule for how big rooms need to be. It's mostly a matter of personal preference. I generally go with 11x11 rooms for symmetry, and a basic base consists of a dining room (can be combined with rec room early on, and later can be separated), a deep freezer, and a workshop for all the crafting benches. Storage room can start out any size, but will later want to be 17x17 to fit an orbital trade beacon. Bedrooms do well with an interior area of around 25 blocks, so with walls a good size is either 7x5 or 6x6. Hope that helps!

  • The whole Nutrient Paste Meal thing doesn't really feel like an exploit though? From a role-play perspective, it'd make perfect sense to let out some Nutrient Paste and store it for emergency purposes, as well as you also occasionally being able to buy them off traders in-game, even without mods...

    @benhur2806@benhur280627 күн бұрын
    • I totally agree from an RP perspective that it makes sense, but that's also pretty subjective. As you could also argue that the vat itself is the emergency storage system, and outside of the vat it really isn't meant to be stored at all, whether frozen or otherwise. But the reason I feel like it is a bit of an exploit is that from the perspective of how the game was designed, the fact that you have to jump through all the hoops of drafting the pawn, forbidding the food, draft, get paste, draft, etc - it seems pretty clear that stockpiling paste really wasn't intended. But again, personal perspective - play how you like!

So Yes storage shelves, and the addition of toxic fallout as a more persistent and pervasive game mechanic (at least that's my take). The rest i can't comment on because I can't get it sent of the 1.4 stuff in my game just yet. Kids and biotech related things which we would need to plan for. • No, there are definitely situations where mods can conflict with each other, and too many mods can impact game performance and cause crashes. The mods I listed in the first guide video all work together just fine, but as you add more you might run into problems.

      @Kaijiro____93@Kaijiro____93 Жыл бұрын
    • @@Kaijiro____93 Nope - subscribing on the Steam Workshop page will automatically add it into the game. You'll just need to turn on the mods within the game's mod menu. Sometimes they have to be in a specific order though, but the autosort button usually fixes this. Looks like though some of the mods I had listed are out of date with 1.4, so probably best to not use those mods unless / until they get updated.

  • 2:30 You say to locate all the steam geysers by right-clicking on a button that I assume is from a mod because I've never seen that in my game after 1000+ hours and just checked the game again and it's not there. It's weird you disabled the official DLCs to do these guides, to avoid confusion / overloading people... but didn't disable any unofficial mods which add WAY more confusion.

    @EndoScorpion@EndoScorpion Жыл бұрын
    • Fair point! I'm pretty sure that button was from the Allow All mod, which I've been playing with for so long I couldn't remember whether that button was part of the base game or not. In one of the videos I think I point out that this was from a mod, but apparently didn't catch that at this part.

    • @@salendrak Yeah I think it's shown later in the third vid. BTW, it's otherwise a great guide. I just personally think people should get familiar with a game (and it's DLC) before jumping into mods. I think Base+Royalty would be ok to start with, but the Idealogy stuff (like setting up you Idealigion before even starting a colony) is something for more experienced players.

  • I actually don’t consider the nutrient paste exploit to be that bad as the nutrient paste does spoil very fast making me think it was a planned feature for you to be able to have it as an item if the devs hadn’t planned on you having access to it im sure they would have set it to spoil even faster as it lasts at least a day from what I remember

  • I havent watched the entire video. But Im hearing you say you dont like the Nutrient Paste "Exploit" but you said kill box like 10 min ago. Im pretty sure those are exploits unless ur meaning like a firing range.

    @chasechase4138@chasechase4138 Жыл бұрын
    • It depends on how you define exploit. For me, it's doing something that clearly wasn't intended by the game design, or that intentional manipulates or takes advantage of the game AI in order to gain an unfair advantage in the game. Storing up nutrient paste requires shenanigans of drafting and forbidding stacks of nutrient paste in order to stockpile it, so I think that's a bit of an exploit. Back in the day, killboxes used to have long winding death-tunnels lined with spike traps that would kill entire raids before any of your pawns were placed in danger. But these days, the AI is MUCH better at avoiding killboxes entirely. They're still useful, but the AI has plenty of ways to level the playing field, so I personally don't think they're an exploit, and honestly, are of limited usefulness, especially mid-game and beyond.

    • @@salendrak well I’ve played the game for 15 hours so far. I bought it a few days ago. So I think I know what I’m talking about. I watched a tutorial right before this video telling “face the red side inside of the air conditioner to cool down the room.” I have pretty expansive knowledge of this game as you may be able to tell. I’m kidding. I just wanted to type something long out since you did too. Idk I’ve only played like 15 hours. I’m not sure how well killboxes work now. But it seemed like the videos I saw about them they were broken and someone said the melee one with doors still worked a year ago. Idk how often updates are. But I could understand them if you’re in the hardest mode and it’s the only way to make it. Or if In normal mode it’s the only way to make it past late game. Im still playing. I bought dwarf fortress and was… hmm… no. Now I’m playing rimworld and it’s pretty good. But I’m usually the type to exploit games if you can somehow. But like I want to learn the game first and before I use killboxes. I set up ones where they funnel in but it’s not like it’s unfair. Idk dude. Maybe I’ll see it like you do in a while. • As someone who has a couple good friends who are AAA game developers, I can tell you with 100% assurity, and this is actually kind of hilarious I'm not just being The jerk to the developer, that the game and it's supposed "no such thing as failing, losing is just a tragedy" absolute BS nonsense that he says which is really just his excuse for not understanding how to balance his own game, is just that. The dev does not know how to make his game balanced or fair and got himself far too deep into ridiculous mechanics trying to make the game hyper realistic (which is just on its own an entire conversation of hilarity, he added in hyper realistic survival problems, and then made all of them completely and utterly whack and unrealistic. Pretty sure nobody starves in one day, and with these realistic villagers running around You're telling me I have to baby monitor them into eating food before they get themselves killed? Come on dude...) And it really just is a case of developer getting himself in over his head having no idea how to fix it shooting himself in the foot left right and center and then pretending out of pure narcissistic silly pride that that's just how the game is meant to be played. Come on Tynan I don't think anyone's dumb enough to believe that my dude.. but the prideful bastard has his name plastered all over the thing with some sort of weird creepy flex so it's really no shock that he is going to pretend like the troglodyte mechanics are secretly his true brilliance and that we're just not good enough to understand them. The game is fine I guess and I got the hang up it pretty darn quick having played lots of similar ones that are well... Actually fun and working versions of it basically... But it would be so much better in every single way if he would just admit he needs help, and quit with this hilarious charade. Again this isn't just my salty opinion, this is the direct and undeniable opinion of no less than three senior developers at AAA Game studios who enjoy the game with me who can clearly see the blaring and almost game running balance and code issues It is absolutely riddled with in their words
