Thanks for this 10/10 guide. I have over 1500 hours in Rimworld but still watched just because of how incredibly high the production quality is. It's actually astounding. Entertaining, well paced, thorough, very clear and easy to understand, annotated. It's obvious you put a lot of time and effort into these. Some games are tough to get into and it's very kind of you to help others enjoy them.
Wow - thanks! I really appreciate that feedback! And yeah - when I do guides like this I really do try to go a few extra miles 😁
It's only easy if you already played it.
@@Netbase2000 As with all things, without knowledge and/or experience anything is tough! But get a little of either or both, and it'll get easier!
Thank you, this is phenomenal, I've just bought the game yesterday and had so many questions, I can't believe this is not more recognized, the more popular guides I've found are way too meme-y and fast paced but this is just so well put together!
Thanks for the feedback, and I'm glad you found it helpful!!
This is HUGE for helping me actual be able to play this game and not just rage quit 2 hours in.
That initial learning curve is pretty rough, but once you get past it, the game is quite fun! Just remember that sometimes despite your best efforts, your colony can still go up in flames!
Thanks, very thorough. I'm already familiar with all of this after 700 hours, but I probably didn't learn most of this until the 200+ hour mark.
Thanks for checking it out!
After an hour and 15 minutes of serious tutorial I really was not expecting that :') 10/10
Did you make it through the whole trio of videos?! If so - nice!! 😁
I began playing rimworld a few days ago. I watched over ten different people's guides so far, can say with confidence that yours and Francis John's are by far the most helpful, thank you!
Francis John is great!
just started playing but man ypu gave me a huge insight on how to start my colony for the 20th time. 10000% superb guide 👌🔥
Glad I could help! 😁
For someone who hasnt ever played Rimworld, this guide was incredible, thank you so much!!
You're most very welcome. Have fun out on the rim!
You have a way of dumping tons of knowledge in an easy to follow style. Thanks for this series it's been a big help.
Mission accomplished! Thanks!! 😁
New player and pc gamer. Excellent guide, clear and concise. I will absolutely have to re-visit as I play. I will make mistakes. No way this old man remembers everything you touched on. This is a good thing, just like games, replay ability matters! Thx. I love the survival genre; seems to be your focus so you have yourself a new sub.
Welcome aboard! And yeah, I tend to design m guides to be a resource to come back to. Many things, especially in a complex game like RimWorld, take a while to sink in and don't even make much sense until you have more experience in the game. Have fun!!
Highest quality RimWorld tutorial ever. Thank you man, just started rimworld and dont know what to do
Glad I could help!!
You should try Necesse. It has a lot of similarities to Rimworld but it's much easier and you also have your own character to intervene in raids. On sale I think it's $5.
Just bought the game and blasted through this guide at 1.5 speed. Awesome work. I would have been so lost without you!
Stay safe on the Rim!!
New to the game on the advice of my son. My first colony...did not do well. Very well planned out video and very helpful to my general understanding of the game. Thanks!
Keep me posted on how the next run goes!!
This guide is fantastic, thank you! Definitely the most helpful I’ve found on KZhead.
Thanks!!
Your guide is AMAZING! I started with Dwarf Fortress and when I learned (and taking at least 5 A4 pages of notes), that I am capable of so so playing it, I took my chance and tried RimWorld (while taking notes also - i feel like at school, but it´s pretty fun even to prepare this way). Really man, you are ace!
Thanks! I personally love it when games are so complex that you basically end up researching the game just to be able to play the game 😊
18:33 Holy cow, this section of friendly fire is explained and shown so well!
Thanks!!
that was the best guide to any game I've ever watched. well done and thanks.
Wow - thanks!!
Absolute lifesaver! thank you!!! Just getting into this genre so its nice to have such clear and awesome descriptions! Earned a sub buddy
Awesome - thank you!!
Thank you for taking the time to make these guides!
My pleasure!!
using your work priority layout worked out for me so much
Great to hear!!
Thorough but concise and to the point. Great guide all the way through. Now I feel like I have enough of a grasp on the game to give it a serious enough try (And yes, I agree that the killer bunny joke was too juicy to resist)
Sometimes the jokes just make themselves!! 😆
The one thing you didn’t cover is how to get people to join your colony. I’m kind of stuck on the starting 3 people… Also my people have a table but they won’t eat at it even when I put the table right next to the prepared meal area…
Do you have chairs next to the table? The won't eat there if they can't sit down at it. As for getting new recruits, you basically just have to capture downed attackers, put them in jail, and then recruit them, or rescue random drop-pod crashes. The game will also sometimes give you quests or just randomly have people join. But mostly capturing good downed attackers is how I get most of my new pawns.
Two thumbs up! Great video. Thanks!
😁
One approch for (especially) the stone cutter (and the workshop in general) I like to use is: Set it to do forever but limit the range of the bill to a very close proximity. This way pawns don't run all over the map to gather stuff and you have more control on what chunks to use first (by selecting them and haul them to a chunk stockpile next to the bench).
Yup - that's a solid approach!
Seems many comments are from vets. I literally have only done the tutorial and found myself scratching my head, so here I am… This is A LOT to take in lol thanks for the well put together guide (maybe minus a couple of spoilery stuff)
Thanks! Sorry if you felt anything was spoilery, but my general assumption is that if someone is watching a comprehensive guide for a game, they're wanting to know what all the game is about, and have most likely experienced at least most if not all of the basic events, and are just looking for ideas on how to handle them. But yeah - RimWorld definitely has a LOT of stuff to learn about and juggle on the journey to a successful colony, and it will definitely keep you on your toes!!
This is very well explained, good clear and calm voice to follow. As a new player I really liked the dlc explanation to make a thing or 2 a better experience.
Thanks! I personally hate it when content creators get overly excited or start yelling and screaming, hence the reason I never do it! 😆
@@salendrak and that's why I said it mate. Plus you sound a bit like how it's made series from discovery channel, maybe you should do more video's like this, your good at it. Nothing but compliments. I installed all the mods and they are really good.
@@GerarddeBaar Making these RimWorld guides was itself a bit of an experiment. Having previously done guides, playthroughs, and livestreams mostly focused on Don't Starve and Terraria, I was noticing a distinct trend that my guides were hands down outperforming all the other formats, so I wanted to see if that trend would carry over to a different game. Views were a little slow at first while the algorithm figured out the videos and they started ranking for search terms, but currently, based on the past 7 days, my three RimWorld videos respectively are ranks 3, 6, and 12 in terms of views. More surprisingly (or perhaps not given the higher average viewer age for RimWorld vs the other games) those same videos have revenue ranks of 2, 4, and 6. I would call that experiment a resounding success!!
@@salendrak good stuff, congrats. I will check out don't starve as well 😉
Omg this looks like it's the most complex sim. Mind blown. The information density in this series was so intense. I have never encountered the game but merely watched this because you put it out and your other guides are so well made and entertaining. Would love to see you playing this, since I only got intimations of what the actual gameplay looks like from this bootcamp level tutorial. I am crossing my fingers that there is a lets play series of you building a nice big colony. If not, maybe that would be something for your summer break? That should entail only minimal post-editing, I assume. Anyhow, just please keep doing what youre doing. You obviously crash landed with 2 flames of passion and a double digit level for content creation on games. This is intoxicating and I am awed by adoration for you going after it. Could hardly be happier for someone getting recognition for this as well!
Thanks!! And yeah, this game is totally complex. But by now you've already noticed that I have a thing for complex game 😆
Thanks a lot, dude, that tutorial was beneficial
Glad it helped!!
Great refresher
Thanks!!
Thanks for this comprehensive guide. I own the game since 2016 when in early access and since then I lost interest because of the complexity. With your instructions I definitely give it another try! I've been always interested in strategy games since playing civ2 back in the 90's.
Ahhhh Civ 2 - I remember playing that game!
I usually give the pawns all recreation time apart from the sleeping time. This way they get their rec time filled and still work around the clock. Work time that way is not necessary because they will work all time anyway once the rec time is full. A small thing i got from a streamer but usefull. Thanks for the guide
Oooooh I think I might try that!
have about 10 hours so far... was shocked to find out you can build with stone and that you're not supposed to skip straight from wood to steel. Yeahhhhhh definitely needed this series, thanks man
loaded up a new world to test out this new knowledge and realized how insane my steel spawns were on my first world
Here's a fun fact - wood and steel are both pretty flammable! Some bricks - not so much!
thanks for the guide!
You're most very welcome!
Another really good mod i've found for QoL is the Deep Storage mod, helps keeps your base compact (if thats what you like or in situations where large mountains are closing you in) and it really helps isolate your storage to certain locations for crafters.
The downside of that one is that if you aren't careful, you can end up ballooning your wealth because you don't get that visual cue or lots of clutter lying around. But yeah, it is otherwise a nice space saver mod for sure!
Returning player forgetting how to play - this was a great mini series (does 90 minutes count as "mini"? heh). Really impressed, and learnt some new things I didn't once know previously!
I promise that I try to be concise when making guides like this. There's just soooo much to cover though!! 😆
Thank you for the most professional and legitimate guide! Just bought the game 2 days ago and one of my 3 pawns died. Turns out this pawn owned a dog. Dog got mad and became a Mankiller, killing the other 2 male pawns in the process. I love this game already! 🤣
Wow - that sounds like quite the introduction to the game! I'll never forget the time my colony got ravaged by a huge horde of manhunter guinea pigs. Memorable stuff!!
@@salendrak lmao that sounds infinitely better 🤣
This is such a thorough and well put together tutorial, the game is definitely overwhelming with it's seemingly limitless possibilities! I'm always rubbish at planning out bases too, that's always been my weak point in these sorts of games, bereft of any sort of creative architectural vision. Where is the footage used from? A particular playthrough of yours on this channel? I'd love to check out more.
Pretty much all of the footage is from a playthrough I did specifically to illustrate various topics I was planning to cover in the trio of guides. I just saved the game both periodically and whenever anything noteworthy happened so I could go back to it later or otherwise skip around through various stages of the game. But yeah - RimWorld is definitely a complex game with lots to learn and LOTS of ways to play it!
This is a very good guide but I wish more guides actually discussed animals and pens and how to feed them I've been struggling for a couple of days
Short answer is fenced/walled off area, with a pen marker, and a gate to get in and out. For feeding, set up a stockpile zone within the pen (make a barn so stuff spoils slower) and make sure food gets put there using priorities. Most animals do fine on a combination of kibble and haygrass. Figuring out how much food to grow though is really tricky, since the animals keep breeding and you never know what sorts of events will mess with your crops. Hope that helps! Also LOVE NieRAutomata!!
Thank you! Arigatou!
You're most very welcome!!
Holy thank you for the great guides! Thank you for not making brutal cut aways and annoying memes.
Yeah, I've personally always found memes popping up all the time in videos to be pretty annoying. Only rarely are they funny enough to even make me smile, but mostly they just get in the way of the information that made me want to watch the video in the first place!
Amazing guide, I started the game with a bunch of mods and both dlcs ready to have a blast but was quickly overwhelmed with way to much content. Decided if I wanted to learn and enjy the game i should only play the base game with essential mods only, then add more conent adding mods, and the dlcs once Ive mastered that.
I think that's a solid approach!! Though a few Quality of Life mods at the get-go is perfectly fine 😉
You can explain the door "bug" with bullets ricochetting/bouncing off the frame and hitting the pawn standing in the doorway... though that's mostly just a flavor excuse. 😅
I always chalk it up to the fact that my frontline guys are usually pretty chonky. Try shooting around them in the open - no problem! Try shooting around them when they're taking up a doorway - whoops!!
it would be great if you can upload clips of playthrough😊 comfortable voice and a suitable length of a video. Thank you!
Like an edited playthrough with voice-overs? Maybe at some point, but in the meantime I do have a couple of livestream episodes playing Rimworld you can check out. Just look for my playlists section on my channel and it's easy to find!
thx 4 this
You're very welcome!!
thanks so much
You're most very welcome!
Hello, great video series! Thank you! Also, is there any mod collection available with the essential qol mods?
Thanks! Not sure on the mod collection though, as I always just do things a la carte 😆
excellent
Many many thanks!
Hey, thank you for the great guides. As a new player I really appreciate it. I have a question though. I like the idea of putting down temporary wooden walls one layer inside of the eventual better walls, but what do you do about all of the interior stuff? Do you have to rebuild everything once the permanent walls are up? I do see some others mentioning to use a mod to replace walls, but I don't really feel like using mods immediately.
It depends on what it is. If we're talking about furniture, there is a command to uninstall, and then you can reinstall it somewhere else. But other things, like (if I remember correctly) nutrient paste dispensers, would have to be deconstructed entirely, and then rebuilt.
🔥 fireeeeee

It's good to stagger people schedule when you have more people have them in groups of 3 and set so there's only 1 group sleeping while the rest are working, it also stops them all from dropping what there doing to go sleep
Yeah, and also helps so that everyone isn't exhausted when raids arrive at the worst time possible!
Wahoo! Now I can actually play the game past making a hut and cannibalism until the raiders come!
Wait a sec....have you been doing cannibalism BEFORE the raiders come?! Well I guess that's one use for extras on a multiple pawn starting scenario!! 😆
@@salendrak start with 3, only need 1.
What mods are you using in these videos? Also are there any other recommendations?
All the mods I was using are listed in the first video of the three. Not sure how many of them are out of date at this point though...
Thanks. Only just got the game and been wanting to see what can level up the vanilla experience without altering the core gameplay too much. QoL kinda thing
@19:20 ish - I swear I have pawns geting blasted all the time within 5 tiles. If it is improved by a mod, please tell me which so I can get it lol
Maybe they were moving or something? Sometimes it's hard to keep track of tiny details like that in the heat of combat!
@@salendrak It think it's coz some of my pawns suck at combat XD
Is there a reason why you don't use the 'replace things' mod? I'm enjoying it. Lets you just turn wooden walls into stone walls later on without deconstructing
Nope! I just wanted to keep the list shorter rather than longer. But that's a great mod! I just haven't gotten around to using it yet 😆
Year late, but what does biting count as? Sharp? Cuz my peeps keep getting injured and left with scars because of bites...
Yup - sharp!
So am I right in thinking you're able to pause the game and pretty much design and put down the blueprints for most of your early buildings and furniture, set your priorities and then unpause and your pawns will just do what you asked them?
Yup! Though the getting them to do exactly what you want sometimes requires some micromanagement. I generally lay out almost my full base before I unpause, but it's mostly a matter of personal preference.
@@salendrak Brilliant! Thanks so much for the response. You have no idea how much your videos have helped me out. Brilliant videos, buddy! :)
10/10
Thanks! 😁
Watched this whole series only to plan my base layout and have a highest construction skill of 2 and no passions
Ooof - be prepared to waste lots of materials with botched builds! 😆
@@salendrak Brute forcing a level 1 to a level 14 was the solution
@@beardid2475 That's some commitment to the cause!!
Do you think you could give us a ONI guide?
I would like too, but first I need to spend a LOT of time playing and learning the game, and maybe go back to college for a few science and engineering degrees. ONI is DENSE with technical stuff!!
Yeah. I'm having a lot of difficulty with it
This guide was really good but l realised that i need to figure out things by myself, because this kinsa seems like im just coopying your play style
Honestly, with most games I think it's a good idea to try the game out yourself for a while, and when things aren't working for you and you have some good in-game experience, check out some guides to expand your knowledge. But one of the great things about RimWorld is there are all sorts of ways to play the game - so definitely feel free to experiment!
Please make one of these for official DLCs Please
At some point I might, but first I'll need to play them a whole lot more!
Please add time stamps to this.
They're in the description....
@@salendrak oh ok, I wanted to cycle through chapters inserted into the video but that’s fine.
@@JamJuice101 Yeah, I'm not sure why the chapter segments are showing up on the scroll-bar of the video. Might be because of the overall length of the video and how some of the chapters are pretty close together. Weird...
Custom settings, friendly fire 0, 👍
That's certainly one way to do it!
But what to do the first hour?
First hour of in-game time or real-life time?
I'm still so confused
How much in-game play time do you have? Lots of times trying to put things into practice, getting some in-game experience, and then coming back to the guides will help them to make a lot more sense!
The priority system doesn't work. Or atleast not on console. If you change any of the priorities they won't ever do anything of lower priority so there no point might as well just select don't do it.
Hmmm that doesn't sound right. In theory, they should do lower priority items whenever there are no tasks to be done of higher priority. Console vs PC shouldn't make any difference for that. Try setting up a single high priority job to be done and watch the pawn assigned to do it to see what they do. They should do that job first, and then move on to something else of a lower priority.
Why do I have tell them to manually pick stuff up that a human being would know to pick up? Don’t make sense.
Did I mention that pawns are kind of dumb sometimes? 😆
Not entirely accurate, Iv had my pawns shot by freindlies who were in the square next to them shooting at a enemy who was melee attacking
Interesting! Were there any doorways involved, or do you remember any of the other specific circumstances?
I just hope I don't turn it into a G-rimworld...
That's honestly kind of the intention of the game 😆
Boo
Why boo?!?!?
@@salendrak he's a ghost
@@quartarkpersonal Oooooh - you might be on to something there!
This explained the mechanics but not the game
Could you explain what you mean by that distinction?
I played Necesse and a lot of it has similarities to Rimworld, but less advanced. That game got me interested in creating AI colonies.
I'll have to check it out!
