The Colorado Avalanche erupted for five goals in the first period as they went on to defeat the Nashville Predators 7-2 in game 1 of their first-round Stanley Cup playoffs series.

“I think we learned from last year’s playoffs to not take our foot off of the gas” That was the post- game comment made by Mackinnon after the Avs destroyed the Predators. It does not surprise me that he made this statement. This game brought flashbacks to 2021 playoffs Round 2 GM1 when the Avs destroyed the Golden Knights 7-1. After that victory, the Colorado Avalanche were never the same. That is why the Avs must take advantage of Saros’ absence. They cannot let this opportunity slip and they know it. When the final horn sounded to end the game, the Avs were not celebrating. On the Altitude feed, the camera zoomed in on Mackinnon. He didn’t even crack a smile. He was still stoic and focused. The rest of the team quickly gave Kuemper head butts, raised their sticks to acknowledge the crowd, and went back to the dressing room immediately. There was no excessive celebration. They know that this is just the beginning. As a team, it was a great game. Individually, some had it pretty rough. The one that stood out the most was Toews. He was responsible for letting Duchene get a pair of goals. It was a rough night for him. All we can hope is that he can learn from it and bounce back. The Predators let in 11 straight goals, including the season finale against the Coyotes, before Duchene scored on the PP in the 2nd period. As an Avs fan, I am just glad we are facing them instead of the Stars. Look at the Flames tonight. They barely beat the Stars with a 1-0 victory. That’s the scenario I fear if Colorado were to face Dallas in the first round. A tight close game with very little room for error. As of now, Nashville did the Avs a favor by blowing that finale.

The PP goal was a broken play where the puck squirts through, Sturm was trying to recover his stick and Grandlund was right there as well so tough ask for Toews to make a decision in that spot. Sure the break away was on him but I'd argue one mistake doesn't amount to a "rough night". I personally don't see any really obvious poor performances from anyone out there on the Avs, even our boy Girard you don't care for had a solid game. Definitely a long way to go but you couldn't have asked for anything more than for the Avs to come out and have this kind of game. More than anything, I take away the fact that the Avs pretty much matched the physical game the Preds were touted for having while still dominating the game they play.

Rittich with some weak goals against and a defense that left him out to dry is a recipe for disaster. Without a workhorse in Saros, our Preds are FKD. The past few weeks has revealed some huge issues with this young team to be sure, and it will likely have an effect on Filip Forsberg's decision this off-season. None of us necessarily expected to advance...they already exceeded expectations, but at least show up with a little heart like old, outmatched Preds teams of the past. Guess we have to suck for a handful of years to get the high picks we've never had for the Landeskogs and MacKinnons of the game. All I can hope for is to not be swept for the first time in franchise history. I don't think I've seen them that outclassed in the postseason since the 2011 series vs VAN.

Rittich had the fight but pretty much a jackal and hyde goalie. When he proved himself in Calgary, we all thought he would be the next Kipprusoff. However, after that All-Star season, he faltered and we had to get a goalie called Cam Talbot on a rebound from the Oilers. He delivered in the first pandemic '19 - '20 season by a strong playoff performance, while 'Big Save Dave' faltered and claimed by the Leafs as the third goalie at the trade deadline the following season. This might be his last chance. He is a great goalie but needed to keep his confidence. Sadly, sometimes he is his worst enemy because he is extremely critical on himself, rather than blaming his leaky team last night who hung him out to dry. Then again, relying on Saros playing the entire season and not expecting overuse him finally caught up with that injury because they failed to clinch the playoff spot early.

Big Save Dave needs confidence. He is often too hard on himself and made it even worse when the team didn't backed him up. The fact that he was injured at the beginning of this season and never had any playing time even as the number 2. That overtime winning goal by the Flames last week, especially not hugging the post on the 0.1 seconds left tying goal by Matthew Tkachuk. The lost of that extra point was the difference of the first wildcard playing the Flames and facing the Avs. Those poor plays were due to lack of playing time by Rittich. Fans should ask the coach and the team management to get behind the answer. Now that Saros is hurt and unnecessarily needed to play all those games. Also they should ask why a decent line-up with the Preds were so inconsistent this season. They should have locked up the second or the third season instead of scrapping for wildcard all season long. I think the team's poor performance had let both goalies down. In the playoffs, that would be the most important aspect of why they would lose. Perhaps in the quickest sweep in NHL history after last night.

Cogliano has been a huge depth boost to the Avs. Looking good in game 1.
Brutal Predators' defense. What on earth were they doing keeping 'Big Save Dave' hung out to dry for 5 goals that were not his fault at all. If this is the way Nashville is playing, then even if Saros is coming back in Game 3 at the earliest. It will be the fastest sweep ever in a series in the NHL. In short, Nashville better wake the hell up being this would be the biggest hockey playoff mismatch for quite a while.
For Rittich it was very bad night, his defense were tragic and its hard to catch something
@@jadli7292 The second goal he might have on the short side. But the Avs forwards were burning the Preds defense like they are pylons. Seriously, he was by far the best player in that awful first period. It should be 10-0 already. Come on, they allowed Colorado first ten bell chances on net only 18 seconds in? You know that Nashville was in huge trouble right off the start.
One game at a time. Go Avs Go!!! WOO WOO!!!
That Makar goal was impressive.
Nashville’s season ended when they blew a 4-0 lead to Arizona. It’s a shame I actually think they could have beaten Calgary. Expect this kind of result in all 4 games.
Shut up nerd
Beat Calgary? Are you high? Their season ended when Saros got hurt. Colorado, Calgary whoever.
@@markiv2942 Saros isn't even the issue. Preds would put up a better fight against Calgary, but they have zero answer on defense other than trying to injure people.
Hope so.
@@markiv2942 I think he just meant. They would have better chance to make to second round against Calgary rather than Avs. Which I'm glad it happened. Since Avs always struggle against stars. Just one of the team we have tougher time. So happy we facing Nashville first round rather than stars. I think Nashville rather faced Calgary.
Nashville came to hit, Colorado came to score, and I think Colorados dominance led them to be the more physical team
Nashville had 59 hits, Colorado had 50. Both teams came to hit. Colorado didn't have as much time to hit when they are shooting the puck so much.
The team with less puck possession almost always has more hits, the fact that colorado had 50 hits and the puck most of the time showed they can be physical too
My boy Lekhy got a goal. I still miss him lol, treat him well Colorado, he’s one hell of a player.
We love him, and he fits so well on this team.
He's been a great addition. Fits well with the speed that the Avs already have and dude can score.
As much as I doubt it, it would be really nice to see a Colorado vs Calgary conference final. One of the best scoring teams against one of the best defenses in the league. Both have dominant first lines, especially Calgary, but Colorado has Cale Makar back there who is a major threat.
I'm just looking for everyone who complained about Bednar resting players and saying we are coasting. Clearly the Avs knew they were ready. Captains back. They are dialed in. No letting of gas take it all
Yeah, the Avs had nothing to play for except home ice against the Florida Panthers if both teams meet in the finals. Resting top guys way more important

I love the avalanche this year, they have a good team 👏
How's that first round exit that you predicted lookin? Granted, it's one game. But it's definitely a statement game!
@@soadfan1016 I never said first round exit, clown. Stop twisting words. Then again, that is something you do best since you can't keep your own promise. Did you even see the Flames game? They barely squeaked a win. So my thoughts on the Stars vs Avs still stand.
Bro wrote an essay lmao
@@alexschroeder8802 i'm not your bro, zoomer. If you think this is an essay, I can already tell that you're an uneducated scrub
Preds are really suffering without Saros it seems. Also great game from Avs

BIG SAVE DAVE BACK AT IT AGAIN
Huge win Avs 🐭🐹🐸
Big Save Dave is continuing to prove why he has the most misleading nickname in hockey. Not that the Predator's lack of defense wasn't a major factor as well. Might as well role the dice and start Ingram next game cause he looked pretty decent in relief
Вот это мощь, вот это настоящая лавина в первом периоде!
Hope Saros coming back
Nashville still looked better than the Wild.
People really saying the kings are the weakest team in the playoffs. But nah Nashville without Saros is. This is the only series I expect a sweep

16 Win"s to go
15*
yep,,,, just 15 to go ,,,
man I remember david rittich in toronto, all one or two games of it, I feel sorry for nashville
Hey duchene how's that more playoff games going....LMFAO... hahaha

If you don't have a handle on penalties, and then you do it against Colorado, well.... Then there are individual mistakes, too. I don't blame Rittich for the five goals.
