  • Substitute "bed" for "box" and it becomes an excellent technique to call your dog to go to bed. Love all your training tips.

  • I just love watching your videos. I learned and taught my puppy your shaping technique and now as an adult, she readily jumps into her airline carrier and her hiking backpack. It is an awesome experience.

  • How many treats is reasonable to use for this training for a single session? and how many times should i train per day?

  • How much time should we spend a day training commands? I know we will continue using them all daily, but how much time dedicated to learning commands.

  • Amazing, it seems the most people are focusing on is which hand she used- I think one comment is enough- not easy to teach and be filmed!

    • Yep that shows you how many of us are actually focused and actually taking in every part of this intended video lesson on puppy training and not just watching it to go thru the motions.

  • I acquired a dog from the animal shelter. He is 2. When I play tug with him, which he loves, he keeps trying to grab the toy where my hand is and ends up biting me. How do I stop that?

  • What is the purpose of the first exercise? If there is a distraction outside and you use this to get their attention focused back in you, it’s literally just for one second. Can somebody please explain how/when this would be helpful?

    • It’s a foundational cue. If your dog is conditioned to focus on your hand when it comes up the skill transfers to other desirable behaviors; gesturing the dog away from an open door, new guest, distracting or dangerous situation. Keeps dogs from developing a tendency to shy away, or evade your hand, so you can reach down and take your dog in hand in an emergency, or if it’s just time to come inside and they still want to chase sparrows. It is SO helpful teaching “heel,” and avoids all the pulling and yanking. If you have a working dog they’ve learned to look at/focus on your hand to receive directional cues. Service dogs learn it first, then it can be transferred to “touch” the light switch or the elevator button. Even silly tricks, like teaching your dog to lie down and roll over when you point at them and say, “play dead!” Any behavior you want to ask for with a gesture is easier to start if they already look for your hand. If you end later sessions by putting both empty hands up, fingers splayed , and say “all done,” you’ve also taught them when the treats are gone, or the game is over. Then reward vocally when they settle. You’ve just taught them to know when you want some personal space. It’s really part of almost everything we try to teach them.
