When ZilianOP began his Twitch journey back in mid 2012, he would gain a reputation for his personality, gaming ability, and his physical disability as a wheelchair Twitch streamer. This would lead to donations, subscriptions and even a fundraiser to buy Zilian a new Wheelchair. However, on the 5th of April 2013, ZilianOP would end his career in seconds, after standing up from his wheelchair on stream. This video will cover the story of Twitch streamer, ZilianOP.
This is, The Streamer Who Faked A Disability For Donations

  • Honestly, being honest about his recovery journey would have probably gotten him _more_ support and _more_ donations than pretending to be wheelchair-bound the whole time. Never underestimate the power of compassion. Humans want to see each other getting better. Lying was the wrong move on every possible level.

    @thetherrannative@thetherrannative2 жыл бұрын
    • He didn't lie. He simply wasn't open about his recovery-- he never stated he was wheelchair bound for the rest of his life. That's a narrative made up by the internet. I wouldn't really say either that he ''made a mistake'' by not updating his viewers on his recovery process. It's none of the viewer's business in my opinion to know everything that happens with a streamer in their own personal life, however, I can see why some would see it differently. I don't think he wanted more support or more donations either way.

    • @@ayihana He did lie when he said that he fell off the chair, when he very clearly and obviously stood up and walked away. And I suppose you're right that it isn't a mistake that he committed fraud in taking money from his fans under false pretenses. That was a premeditated crime. Mistakes are accidental, and that was deliberate. If he wanted to keep his recovery to himself, the right thing to do would have been to put out a message saying he would no longer accept donations for a reason he would not share. Very easy way to keep your privacy while also not committing fraud.

  • Hi Sunny, I appreciate you fairly covering this story. For viewers: Ever since I spoke with Zilian / Itsblooish back in 2020 and saw the prior photos of him in a wheelchair I realized much of what had been said about him in the past was mostly unsubstantiated bullshit. In my view, Zilian's biggest mistake was not updating his stream regarding his physical therapy progress. He never created a fake disability, and as far as I know he never told anyone he wouldn't be able to walk again. Rather Zilian was actively participating in physical therapy to regain his mobility and needed the wheelchair in the interim. But with him always in the wheelchair on camera, some viewers naturally assumed he was permanently paralyzed and were stunned when he stood up on stream. The clip goes viral, and the "handicapped streamer fakes a disability" narrative becomes part of internet history. Zilian was banned for faking a disability, which is something he provably didn't do. That said, he made many mistakes, which he has admitted to. He should have been updating his stream on his physical therapy and mobility status so a misunderstanding like this could never occur. I agree with Sunny, Zilian has learned his lesson and in my view should be given the chance to simply EXIST on the internet. So shoutout to Sunny and shoutout to ItsBlooish/Zilian. Take care folks.

Now the tech they've put in to it, has dropped that delay to 5 seconds or less, but even then if you go by the delay she responded so fast that it's more or less highly highly improbable that she reacted to him standing up. He did a stream where he talked about the entire thing just a few hours after sunny's vid came out, it was very enlightening to listen to the incident in retrospect. Because he fully admits he panicked and lied, but some of the conspiracy theories people have come up with were completely out of left field and easily explained away.

    • @@sethk5396 That's not what happened though. Like i've explained, even on modern twitch there is a delay of 10-15 seconds, you can see this no better than watching certain clips where say Mizkif and Alinity were talking via discord, and how out of sync the audio and the video were while he was watching her stream. Back in 2011-2012 where this happened, the delay was much larger, and her reaction happened less than a second after. It would be impossible for her to have seen that and reacted that quickly, literally impossible. He didn't even know he was on stream, which is why he panicked and lied. Go watch his most recent stream on his channel where he talks about this video, or go watch the interview with Wavy. He fully admits guilt for his actions after this clip came out, but the conspiracy theories and the pure speculation people have come up with have contradicting evidence.

Regardless whether he wanted to keep it private or not, he shouldn't have said he "fell" off his wheelchair when he did stand up. This seems sketchy as hell. I would be open and honest with my viewers, as I am because my husband and I stream on Twitch, about my recovery process. I'm not sure why you wouldn't. It's personal but, if you're openly throwing your disability out there, talking about it, and accepting donations because of your inability to work a "normal" job (a struggle a large percentage of us with disabilities face, hence why we receive financial aid from the government), you owe updates. You're already sharing a large portion of your personal life, so why not keep your viewers in the loop? The fact he pointed his camera down and didn't try to come back instantaneously to stream and try to explain (or at least in the next stream) that it was a misunderstanding shows he, without a doubt, was faking it beyond his period of disability, if what he stated was even truthful. I'm disgusted and appalled. This is a slap in the face to those of us that struggle immensely to even get by and face constant discrimination because of our disabilities. So next time you see a person in a wheelchair stand up and walk, don’t immediately assume they’re faking. Not every wheelchair user is completely paralysed Edit: Just came back to clear up some things. My comment wasn’t to insinuate that what he did was right, and that the people who were angry with him were being unreasonable, I’m just saying that IN GENERAL, when we see someone in a wheelchair stand up and walk, we shouldn’t immediately jump to assuming that they were faking being disabled. Obviously, it’s important not to lie about your disability just to get money or benefit yourself or what not, because it just leads people to being skeptical of every disabled person they come across. But it’s also not a bad idea to not jump to conclusions when you see wheelchair users abandon their wheelchairs every now and then, (another example is people with visual impairments using a cane or another mobility aid on this day, and going out without one the next). People shouldn’t be dishonest in how they present themselves (especially if they have an audience or a large following) but, people should also be mindful and avoid making assumptions too quickly. This was just a friendly reminder that not everyone with a disability needs an aid at all times, everyone is different and everything is situational. I think that is the main reason as to why he kept acting like he was wheel chair bound even though he was fully able to walk. His girlfreind realised that he was just acting disabled even though he was fully cured and thats why she was in awe that he just got up when live.

Whether or not he was "originally" faking it or not, he continued to put on the act because he knew what it got him and he took advantage of it. I feel the fact that he *did* need it for a bit of time is moot. Point is he still lied to benefit himself. He don't feel bad about doing it, he feels bad he got caught.

Saying "people in wheelchairs can usually walk a bit so idk what your guys problem is" isnt an argument since he didnt portray himself in that way. He actively said and implied that he couldnt walk at all, when clearly after a while of recovery he absolutely could, and he did not update his audience at all. Being handicapped doesnt mean you can suddenly get away with more stuff then another person. Thats like a cancer patient still taking donation money for treatment months after their cancer has been succesfully cured.

The reason he didnt show himself walking was probably because he knew that everyone would jump to conclusions and accuse him of faking a disability. And thats exactly what happened. People jumped and accused him of faking his entire disability. People just assume they are entitled to every detail about his life because they watch his streams and its honestly weird. Theres tons of people in wheelchairs who are able to walk and stand yet they dont tell every stranger on the internet the extent of their disability or ability to walk or not. It's none of the viewers business to know his recovery process and are not entitled to be updated on his ability to walk or not.

  • As someone with actual paralysis and a T2 spinal cord injury. I find it amazing that he regained total control after 2 years with a disability severe enough for him to be 100% dependent on a wheelchair. Neurotrauma is progressive and the longer that therapy takes the less chance of recovery there is. And after that there should be some residual effect in standing up. I do not believe he was ever 100% dependent on a wheelchair. He may have struggled HEAVILY to walk for a time and slowly worked his way into building the new neural pathways you need to recover, but I don’t believe the total disability story it is very rare that someone like that recovers so well or even at all. Would need to know more about the spinal injury though like how low it was and whether they had to do anything like a fusion or replacement though.

He clearly wanted people to think he was confined to the wheelchair and then when he got up on the stream and immediately cut off the stream and tried to come up with an explanation, it shows he felt as though he gave something away. He could’ve simply said “oh yeh I do have some mobility but need the wheelchair as I can’t stand up for too long” instead of “oh yeh I fell over right after I stood up” despite the fact he got up perfectly fine and walked away with no limp or difficulties.

This isn't about "encouraged not to share", he lied and is still lying today by saying the only mistake he made was not being more open. He was lying on purpose. If he wasn't then there was no reason to lie about falling out of his chair when he clearly got up and walked, no reason to put the camera down, no reason for his girlfriend to freak out. If he had said that at a certain point he realised he hadn't shared enough and doubly want to then because he worried he would lose opportunities then I might think, ok, fair cop. But he didn't do that, he has in fact blamed "cancel culture" repeatedly, which is dodging responsibility. He's owned up, sure, but he's owned up to a version of the truth that is more flattering to him than reality.

    • @@ZoeAlleyne I will admit I don't know the full truth either, but in wavywebsurf's vid he explains he *did* bump into the table which is what caused the cam to fall. Also his girlfriend "freaking out", again my sources are wavywebsurf's vid, was a coincidence. In fact, at the time there was a stream delay which meant there was no way his girlfriend "would've been able to react to him so quickly." - words of wavywebsurf. Although, thinking more about it, I do agree it doesn't seem like he's telling the whole truth and taking the whole responsibility. Like a commenter on wavywebsurf's vid said, "I don’t think he’s malicious but I still kind of feel like this is a “I didn’t lie I just didn’t correct peoples misconceptions” situation." "He's owned up, sure, but he's owned up to a version of the truth that is more flattering to him than reality." I 90% agree on this, thinking on it more. • I find it disappointing that he COULD have been a great source of education and representation to the ignorant about how life can change from day to day, and that many wheelchair users ARE able to walk, though not very far, but instead chose to perpetuate the stereotypical 'if you are in a wheelchair you cannot take a single step'. These actions not only lost him his channel, financial support and following, but also further damaged the already marginalized community of people who are physically able to walk (at least to the bathroom) but cannot, for whatever reason, walk much further without assistance. I truly believe he would have found much support among those in a similar position, and would have been cheered on for his progress in regaining his abilities, rather than vilified. No, we are NOT owed every detail about a streamer's life, but if you are managing to convince people of a situation that is not true, then it IS your responsibility to correct that misconception.
