In this video I pinch a log from our fire wood store and turn a natural edge bowl.. I don't think it turned out bad for firewood, there was even a bit of spalting

These are the ones I like best, just a random piece of old wood and a simple but not obvious shape, showing its unexpected beauty. The dark crack becomes a feature, not a flaw. The pencils and the resin are great fun but this is real woodwork. My grandfather was a joiner - very basic stuff mainly, like mending chairs and the desks from the local school - but he was also the village undertaker and made coffins. My sister and I spent a lot of time in his workshop, watching him at work, learning about different types of wood and the use of his tools. Looking back it was a bit weird with the odd half-finished coffin propped up in the corner, but fascinating and, for us, just normal.
beautiful bowl, love the burnt edge, makes it very unique, lovely woodgrain, whomever receives this as a gift should be most pleased, another lovely piece of art Andy!!!
Thankyou
Of course Andy has the power of pardoning a piece of firewood for Christmas! But with his extraordinary creative genius, he has made a Christmas present masterpiece, leaving it with an incredible burnt edge as a gentle reminder of what it could have been! Its gorgeous Andy! Merry Christmas to you and yours!!!
Well said.
Hey not bad for firewood, I think burning the edge of the bowl was a nice touch. Also I'm happy to say that I was finally able to purchase a lathe for myself this year. I can't wait to take it for a spin and try out a few inspired projects thanks to you Andy.😄
That's great.. have fun 👍
The burnt edge is very kewl, and that crazy knot really sets the piece off (imo). You never fail to deliver something unique. Thanks!
You don't think it turned out bad!?! IT'S STUNNING!!! Very inspirational work! Makes me want a bigger lathe!
I'd be thrilled to receive this as a present! I love the edge - the contrast of the colours is awesome!
How great is it to shop for your next project piece just outside your door. I love that. Watching you I feel how Peacefully you work. This time you simply removing all that wasn’t the bowl. It’s just matter of fact. I swear I could smell the fragrance of the fire meeting the wood. How fun! Thank you Andy for sharing your Creative Expression with us as you shape nature piece by piece.
The Beauty of fire wood. I can't not look at it and evaluate it's turning potential before it ends up on the fire 😊
It's gorgeous, Andy. My wish is for the lucky recipient to be as thrilled as I am envious. 👍
A real thing of beauty and the burnt edge added a bit of drama ❤
"Men of culture, we gather, again." 👊😁
What a gorgeous trinket tray! I especially like the burnt edge. Whoever gets it for Christmas is going to love it!
Beautiful bowl. I love the shape.
Simply elegant Andy!
The outside became the inside & the inside became the outside and it all worked out perfect in the end! ❤
Great bowl for keeping your bananas in....lovely! ❤
A little bit like opening a badly wrapped Christmas present then finding an absolute gem inside. Happy Christmas Andy & thank you for sharing your artistic gifts for us to admire & enjoy ♥️
Excellent piece and a brilliant wee video. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
What a fascinating piece of wood! Crazy grain. I'm sure the recipient will love the gift!
I love your burnt edge bowls beautiful work and a lovely gift
Andy Phillip is the kind of guy to give you a part-burnt piece of firewood as a gift... Just kidding, lovely bowl, awesome work!
Like this muffin bowl. Must need one for Christmas dinner. Lol. Keep up good work.
Plain and simple but with that burnt edge for some drama. I just love it!
Wonderful. At least it got a little taste of what it was destined for, and much as love a log fire, this little piece survived to show off its true beauty.
Beautiful little bowl Andy, someone is getting a beautiful gift! ❤❤❤❤
Very lovely!
Very elegant and the burnt edge finishes it perfectly.
I love using firewood. You can get some stunning pieces from a bag and pretty cheap as well.

Nice! I like the burnt edge technique; I may have to try that!
Beautiful work sir 👏.
Beautiful
Great work
Beautiful piece
Cheers
Really nice result Andy. Looks like a serving dish for fancy picnics or on-the-deck get-togethers. You know, for salami, pastrami, cheeses, olives, dried figs and so forth...
Thankyou
You brought out the torch and I thought you were going to make it firewood. Glad you didn't. Nice piece.
LOL .. Thanks 👍

Never going to be able to look at firewood the same again Andy.
Awesome ❤
Thanks
Very nice.
You make it laugh, it WAS from the burn pile. I would love to have received that upcycle!
Really beautiful work, Andy! 😃 Amazing looking piece!!! Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊 And happy holidays!
Got to keep your hand in Andy. Nice piece. Better than burning it all on the log burner. Merry Christmas mate.
I want to be on your Christmas list 😊
I have a suggeston for you. Make inside the bowl deep Lichtenberg figures and fill them with red/orange epoxy.
I really enjoyed woodshop back in Jr. High so long ago. More than once in the decades since then I've wished I had followed that path, but life had other ideas. Sadly, the teachers in that school at that time for the most part didn't give a damn about the students. There were exceptions (the one that comes most to mind was the English teacher, she'd go way out of her way to provide all the help you might need), but most of them just wanted to go home and get away from us kids. Unfortunately, the woodshop teacher seemed lifeless and monotone, like he was reading from a script. He gave little to no encouragement, but if you screwed up, he'd rip you a new one. The whole class hated him, as I suspect all the other students that had a class with him did. Pity.
Hi Andy. I find it cool, when you have a "turn" where you get the illusion that you are carving out something invisible. It's a pretty piece. And for Christmas I offer Albert Finney as Scrooge: I like life. Life likes me. Life and I fairly fully agree. Life is fine. Life is good, 'Specially mine, which is just as it should be. I like pouring the wine, and why not? Life's a pleasure; that I deny not.
Very nice bowl. I don't get torching the wood. Fire and wood are absolute enemies. Wood looks best when kept away from fire.
Merry Christmas Andy. Love your channel. Thank you. This was a very sweet little piece you made 🇺🇸❤️
Thanks .. Same to you!
@@AndyPhillipWoodturningI swear every time I leave a message the autocorrect troll comes and makes me look stupid by messing up my words. I did edit the word “pied” for piece but I’m sure you think I’m from another country 😹
Отличная работа
С Новым Годом!!!
Yup. Nice one again Mr P. 🎄💚🎄 Merry Xmaswintervaltide 🎄💚🎄
Шикарный подарок! Такое дерево жечь нельзя!
Nicely done Andy. With grain patterns like that I would be raiding the wood pile for projects all the time😁😁 Take care Andy. All the best Christmas wishes to you and your family Cheers Harold
Thanks Harold .. same to you too
Show 👍 😊😊😊 nota 10 ☝️
Nice 👍 this was fun to watch. What kind of wood was it?
Andy: "Brr, kinda cold in here, better get some fire wood." Andy: *stares at fire wood log* Andy: "Hmmmmm."
Once again I’m astonished at what you are able to turn. Do you sharpen your own lathe tools? If so, I would love a tutorial.
Beautiful touch, poor bowl was burned either way.
😂thanks
Makes a beautiful candy dish
That would look lovely with some Holly laid in it with some of that thin tinsel thrown over it.❤❤❤❤
Is that snow I saw? No wonder you were bundled up. And no wonder you decided on using some firewood. If it didn't turn out well - and it turned out fabulous - you could use it as firewood after all! P.S. What do you do with all the shavings? I was thinking it might be interesting to try using a bunch in resin some time.
nice. i sure have learned a lot from you. made some pretty nice pieces. may i ask a question? a couple vases i turned ended up as nice looking fireplace logs. they split pretty bad. i don't know what wood it was as it was picked out of wood for burning at the local little grocery store up the road from me. is this a tragic part of life? was my shop too dry? just curious. .
Thanks, gland you find the channel useful...we get firewood that is seasoned so it is a good moisture content to turn 👍
Looks great! What kind of oil are you putting on there and did you oil the burnt edge as well?
Thanks... I used Danish oil, I coated the burnt edge as well
You were on my Google discover page
That's great .. thanks for letting me know
I can just imagine Andy’s wife fighting with him over what she can and cannot burn on the fire!
Mmm tagliatelle 😋
What gouge do you use for roughing? That thing was doing a great job!
Thanks .. I used a 1/2 " Crown cryo gouge by crown tools on this .. its not really a roughing gouge but its my go to gouge for most things I also use the 3/8 " version
Beautiful bowl, Andy! Wow! What carbide tool were you using? (It looked like it had a 45-degree angle.)
Thanks .. It was a 10mm carbide by Simon Hope Woodturning
Thanks, Andy! Merry Christmas. @@AndyPhillipWoodturning
What wad the piece you put in the chuck to screw the wood onto? I need 1.
It was a woodworm screw
Make a nice tortoise shell
See? All you need is a woodstove ... :-)
Great grains! What tree was it? Any idea?
Birch I think
I looked fast and i thought it was a sandwich from subway
Magnificent, shall I send you my address?😅
Who’s Christmas present is this because I’m not sure who would want that as a present as some cool artwork yeah but as a present idk
What is wrong with art work as a present?
