TIMELAPSE - MAN BUILDS OFF GRID CABIN (In Alaska)

This video is special to me, because it is one of my earliest. I shot it about a year before starting this channel. Most of the footage was taken using an I Phone 8, and I have been hesitant to release it because the quality is not the greatest. But after some consideration, I have decided to put it out there. The setting for this little place is spectacular and too pretty to keep to myself.
The cabin is located high up in a mountain pass, way above timberline. The country is alpine. There are a number of glaciers in the surrounding mountains, one you can see from the back porch of the cabin. The lake in front of the cabin is a bit of an illusion. The cabin sits on the edge of a bluff, about 150 feet above the water. The lake is actually several miles long. I started work on this project in early August, when the blueberries were just ready to pick, and finished it in January of the same year.
Enjoy!
Oh, and this video is also my first time lapse - Let me know how you like it.

  • I just wanted to say how much my wife and I enjoy watching you videos that we are able to cast to our flat screen TV. The quality of your work and your editing is much appreciated. There is one thing that puzzles us. Its a bit difficult for us as subscribers to understand what property you are working on. Location is none of anyone's business, but possibly one of your sit down chats you could amplify the purpose of each of your builds. We especially love to see you and your wife's team work and the involvement of your explaining to your grandson what you are doing, why you are doing it and letting him help. I am in my late 70's and have built 5 houses and 1 cedar log cabin on a cliff 300 ft. about a beautiful lake in Ontario. I am too old to do any more projects, but your close to this video of your sitting in a chair with a steaming cup of coffee was epic! It's the journey that gives us the joy......but the coffee complete it. Thank You Paul from West Michigan

  • Loved this retrospective and hadn't seen anything of this previously of course. I can see the love of the ALaskan environment coming out even in the way you replaced the turf beside the wooden foundation pads - and your attention to recycling by using those reclaimed boards. Great to see the process and your fantastic attention to detail but also how you've changed in terms of the materials used. Thanks for posting - I enjoyed my weekly fix. And in company with a very young Stella and an ageless Tanya. Many thanks.

  • Gale, I love all the videos you do and each one has incredible production value. Sometimes I marvel at how much thought, work, and time must go into each one - and then add to it the fact you publish weekly. It’s mind blowing. I am very grateful to you as I look forward with great anticipation each week to your Friday installments! To answer your question about time lapse… You did a great job with this one and there was instant gratification but… One of the elements of your videos I enjoy immensely is the almost zen-like quality of the slow and steady pace at which your projects evolve. I enjoy learning from your techniques and incorporating them into my own projects. To me, there is nothing better on an early Saturday morning than sipping a warm cup of coffee and watching one of your projects unfold. Thank you for making these videos and brining joy to so many. Peace to YOU my friend!

    • Thank you Carolina. I have always thought that being up here in the mountains at night had to be similar to being out on the ocean. The absence of trees make the sky seem so vast. And it gets so dark that the sky overhead has enormous depth. You can see stars beyond the stars, and on and on. Thanks for being part of our lives here

  • Thank you for the amazing montage! The vista is the most incredible part of the cabin, it is no wonder why you are often shown gazing at the spectacular creation example that is Alaska. I also appreciated so much your attention to detail and purposeful commitment when you immediately replaced the ground cover once the footings were in place. My youngest son (24 y/o) watched this with me to see why I enjoy your videos so much. • Hello.... Got time to watch your video and respond to it after a long time. I always admired the beauty of nature in your videos and named my newborn baby girl as Alaska. Now we are so much connected with the beautiful name Alaska. Love from India ❤️.

  • I am no builder but am wondering how those footers are stable enough. The ground must be pretty solid.
