Big thanks to JBugs.com for getting us the engine rebuild kit in time! We struggled 'cause we're not VW wizards like Rocky over at General Parts in Albuquerque, NM. If you need a hero you can find one there!
And major thanks and much love to Dan Brockett--you're going to want to follow him @officer_dan on IG and on YT!

That's what I did when I rebuilt a transaxel on my z-turn lawnmower, except for the really fast part. I did get it done quickly considering I didn't know what I was doing, but I wasn't in a hurry.
Honestly, it takes an experienced vw mechanic about 4-6h working alone.. so 16h is a pretty good starting level. At one point you know all the bolts.

One pro for the air-cooled engines is that you preserve technology from back in the day and show how far things have come. And also how simple the essence of a internal combustion engine really is. Yes, newer engines have more power and torque and such, but these old engines show a step on the journey to the awesome engines we have today in my opinion.

Loved this video! It's obvious you guys aren't experts at these engines. But did that stop you? Nope. You dove in head first and learned your way through it. Plus, thanks to the awesome car community, people came in and lent their knowledge and hands. This is what being a car person is all about! Learning how to do stuff! Sometimes it's the hard way and during those times it's easy to want to throw the whole car away and buy a new Prius (lol, jokes) but you learned something and shared it with the rest of us. I love the car community! Thanks for this video.

@@ethanparker7875 hello
Man, I love when good people pitch in and help with stuff like this.
As a guy that has a 74 bug its nice to see the excitement the whole crew had building the motor. You might not be the fastest car on the road but you are able to operate a piece of engineering history. That oil comment is very true you pretty much have to have a quart or 2 of oil in the "frunk" if you plan to daily the car. One of the easiest motors to tweak and mess with! I am curious what oil weight you are using for it though.
It's a bold journey that showcases skill, speed, and a deep love for classic machinery. Bravo!!!

I rebuilt one of these for my VW beetle with my grandpa back in the day when I was 15. We spent 2 years restoring the whole car.
Rich Humphrey i got my beetle when i was 17, I’m 21 now and i still haven’t fully restored mine, It’s my daily driver for college (so no time to have it stop at a shop and rebuild/repaint stuff) and I don’t have all the cash needed, but no f*kin way I’m ginving up on it. It’s a 1972 with a 1500 engine
I got a 1974 1300 beetle for my 21st birthday, not much to restore, so just some light customization, and, man, I tell you, it feels very good driving a beetle arround town and on the countryside
Tactical Pugs around my college (I’m a vet student and this is kind of a rural area) there are tons of gravel roads, awesome for some sideways fun with the beetle
My grandfather passed on to me his 1970 Beetle 2 years ago before he died. We had just finished restoring it. Luckily, he was able to drive it one last time and was also able to see me driving it. Now I daily drive it to college.
