I'm so very sorry for your loss. I lost my dad in 2011, on 9/11. Which was very appropriate. If you knew my father, you'd know what I'm talking about! But I miss him greatly! He was 95 when he passed, so he had a good, long life.

Sorry for your loss. My dad passed away decades ago and I still miss him the same now as I did then.
I lost my dad in 83. Still miss him and I've lost what he looked like. But I can still hear his voice. It does still hurt but it gets easier.

This is true, hadn't noticed that about the language. Foul language doesn't bother me, but that is an interesting point to make.
How to adjust valves in 5 steps: 1.- Align crank pulley to TDC mark 2.- Pop distributor cap off and see if rotor points to cyl 1 or 3 3.- Pop both valve covers off 4.- If distributor rotor points to cyl 1, adjust both cyl1 valves, cyl 2 intake and cyl 4 exhaust. If distributor rotor points to cyl 3, adjust both cyl3 valves, cyl 4 intake and cyl 2 exhaust. 5.- Turn crank pulley 1 full turn and adjust remaining valves.
There is something pleasing to the mind when something old is made new again. Very satisfying. Looking forward to the next installment.

Three hundred bucks is the price for bare block (used) here in New Zealand. And that's for Single Relief/Single port block!

It’s just scrap value, there are millions of old bugs since they’ve build millions. And as long as nobody falls in love with them not minding to put in lots of time to restore and rebuild it all it’s just a rusty paperweight with a cool cult following but not worth much. If you’re are good mechanic and the internal parts aren’t worn or broken out or rusty due to water coming in and you can rebuild the engine just cleaning it and overall putting in new seals etc. then parts wise you could get a good engine for a nice price but if everything is rusted and worn it’s just a old pile of junk unless it’s some rare split window bug model or some safari van shell or something else that’s highly desired by customers willing to dish out lots of money then a rusty restorable one could be a good deal. But otherwise it’s mostly a much better idea to save up a bit more money and spend more time looking for a good deal one that runs already isn’t rusted out and just cost you a bit more but is much easier to fix up technically as well as cosmetically. Here in the Netherlands we would say “buying cheap is expensive”.

Hello there. When you discover the pushrod that was bended, it reminds me that this happens to my first car, a VW 52 model. What happens next was that the pushrod jumped out of the location in the top and then was forced through the top. Then two valves was open at the same time and the piston crash into them. It was too expensive to repair, so I bought a used engine with about 34 hp. The original engine was 25 hp, so I got myself a VW GTi (hehe). Greetings from an old (74yo) fan in Norway.

Loved it! Recently retired and about to start on my ‘69 bug I parked over twenty years ago. Only about 25,000 miles on the engine so shouldn’t be too hard getting it going. Your videos have been helpful and very inspiring. Thanks from Alabama!

Great job on the Bug engine! I did a 1966 Beetle back in 2010, complete pan off restoration. Built a 2110 from scratch, including a new case and every part new, Gene Berg parts where possible. Dual Webers and a ceramic coat exhaust. What a runner that was! Watching you guys do this really brought back those memories.

THAT was a full rescue... and beautification.
Currently working on one of these and I've just been reading the factory service manual. Here's some things I learned that can help you out: 1) Replace the rocker arm screws. Its cheap and well worth the money. 2) Put case savers or helicoils into the case where the large studs bolt in. That's a weak spot. 3) Split the case and replace the bearings. Be mindful of measurements especially camshaft endplay when using aftermarket bearings. 4) No need to replace that carburetor. They're fully serviceable. Same goes for the distributor although the vacuum advance probably needed replacing. 5) At the very least, check the oil pump and bypass. You don't everything to be a waste due to the bypass piston/valve sticking and starving the engine of oil. You also don't want it sticking in the closed position and blowing out the oil cooler. And as for the oil pump, they wear out and can get heavily scored. They're not very expensive to replace. 6) Get the factory service manual. Don't use an aftermarket manual. The blue manual is worth every penny. 7) Change the bearings(some need modified to improve oil passage). You need to take off the rod with the messed up piston to at least check if its bent anyway. 8) Test the thermostat and adjust it. Should open around 160F. Make sure you test it while its in its bracket. They tend to fail open and that can damage the engine. 9) Make sure the oil has zinc in it. 10) Clean out the oil cooler and replace its seals. 11) Make sure to clean the oil strainer. Its probably clogged up. You need to remove it every time you do an oil change which means new gaskets and new copper washers. 12) Fix things rather than just replacing stuff unless its a wear item. A properly cleaned and adjusted part is far better than an aftermarket replacement. Anyone can throw new parts at something.

Hey, Lance, you mentioned that the previous owner may have hit something to bend that pushrod? That may explain why you found a new plug in that cylinder. The owner may have thought the plug was bad, instead of a bent pushrod, and put a new plug in it. When that didn’t work, I’ll bet that’s when they parked the car. My thoughts.
Except that the brand new plug was on a cylinder on the other side of the engine.
The new looking plug was in the cylinder with the broken piston. No compression there. They were driving on 3 cylinders for some time, Ìm sure. They stopped driving the car when the pushrod was bent and the motor stopped running. 2 cyl. is not enough, even for those motors. I hope the guys cleaned the crankcase before reassembly. I think there might be parts from the piston inside, as is was already "see through"...
i whould think the owner starter to change the plug and wasnt incline in mechanic ..the push rod must have bend from engine over heating due to head gasket that whould explain the stock plugs on head on that side ..the broken piston must happenned when he unlock the enigne we heard those click click then he started it ..
These engines get caked with oil and grit that clogs the cooling fins. No surprises they overheat when cooling air can’t get to the hot metal.
what happens was he ran over something on road look to be small steel rod and swing up hit push rod and bended it and he thought destory engine and he went to auto store check it find nothing borken it still running rough so he decided replace start plugs but never got to 4th one just like u try wasnt going come out so that how he left it as it is parked im not bit happy about oils cooler aint been check for leaks it have two o ring under it i do recommend replacing it otherwise be leaking down the road without anyone knowing it and they are knowing to be to rotten out

Me to les left school at fifteen started at a vw garage loved the beetle, type three for me was a bitch to work on no room in engine compartment happy days for me now in my seventys.

I was very afraid of my father because when we work I must be alert if he asks for 9/16 spanner it must be a 9/16 otherwise he'll smack me but today I'm 75 I'm a perfectionist I can do anything what i can say is " thank you dad !" I really didn't understand why you're so hard on me" you're teaching me the real life at a young age..thank you!
54 years ago I came home from the Navy to find a 1961 VW in the garage where I rented. Purchased the Idiots manual and with almost no mechanical experience I rebuilt that engine top to bottom. It was a confusing time where I needed the therapy of VW maintenance. Thank You for this great video

There is 2K in parts in that rebuild. They should have just paid for an all new engine.

I ended up with a very home built dune buggy that has a 1966 (December 1965 build date) 1300cc engine, then a bunch of parts and an extra transaxle and engine (1970s 1600cc dual port), all for $300. Need to rebuild both engines and switch out the swing axle transaxles for a CV axle transaxle. Have the book on how to rebuild a VW air cooled engine, very helpful resource for anyone wanting to dabble in these engines.

I just watched a video on The Duckman VW Garage were he had a oil leak on a push rod tube and he took out the factory tube what had a pin hole in it and used a telescopic aftermarket tube to replace it . Before he installed it he said folks said that they were known to leak , so the greased the o-rings on the tube then installed it and tightened down tight .

That's what they want for the USA. Very sad the woke is a joke taken very seriously by the people in power.
Only thing I would suggest is get that vacuum line from the carb to the advance unit above the height of the float bowel. That way no gas can get into the advance unit and eat the rubber diaphragm in there. Vw used a small metal pipe basically the shape of a shepards crook originally. I have made many over the years from brakeline
Good job on the engine I've seen them much worse. When I was just getting my drivers license for a couple years that's all my Dad allowed us to drive because he always had a couple bugs sitting around. And it got to where I could pull an engine laying under it and sit it on my chest and work your way with still sitting on my chest. We could rebuild it and have it reinstalled in about 5.5 hours and ready to drive. The worse job ever had on a bug was trying to change the clutch cable that was broken. Only major problem when rebuilding an older engine putting larger jugs and pistons on it was Dad wanted to keep the 6 volt system was the starter was never strong enough to start it. Always first thing of the morning to start it was to park on a hill to roll start it.
Super clean . I had a big with more water in the block than oil and I couldn't believe that sucker came back to life with a little love . Those motors are bulletproof

Good transformation guys, just have to point some things about this: -You are missing all the lower tins of the engine, which are very important to keep the cooling working as it should -Did you install the square lower tins on the cylinders? Also a crucial part of the engine -That empi monza exhaust is crap, actually kills hp. Better to keep the stock one on there

@@novavolks9652 the kombi exhaust if you want bottom end torque and low noise. All the "tuned pipes" were great if you wanted 5500RPM power and nothing else. That result was from a series of tests made back in the 70's when I was doing a camper. My 75HP (45 at the wheels up from 20) balanced blueprinted twin port, holly carb, 8 dowel crank, and 17in land rover tyres. spin the tyres 1st and second. But the motor was too much for he diff. Kept spreading the casing bolts. I loved that bus.. 75MPH all day and night for 2000 miles. from the southern tip to the northern tip of NZ. and yes the speed limit was 50 during the fuel crisis. memories.

Built the last dual-port I did in the '80s. Saw the van I sold a few years back. He sold the engine for someone else's van. The motor was still good. Spent $451 on that motor. I put 35,000 miles on it before I wrecked it. Sober now. I really miss it. It made 2 trips to Colorado and never missed a lick. Be sure you put a new thermostat in it. Looks like a round accordian. Ask your parts guy about it. That sheet metal is there for a reason. Use it. Happy builds.

Many years ago, I bought a 1961 beetle with a blown motor (common in that first year of the 40 horse engine). I wanted more power than stock, so I got a 1965 50 horse bus motor. That 25% increase allowed me to break 80 MPH, but first I had to disconnect the electric speed governor which was put on bus motors to prevent overrevving. The beetle engine was designed to run flat out without overrevving, but the bus has portal gears like the WW II military "kubelwagen." Both vehicles have a higher ground clearance with an axle reduction gear, so they sacrifice top speed for larger load capacity. This means that, unlike a beetle, a bus CAN be overrevved, leading to engine failure. The Restored guys may want to consider a speed governor for this engine.

In my hometown we had an old German guy named Roscoe Brake, he fixed, restored nothing but VW Bugs. The guy could literally take apart the engine, fix whatever and have it ready for you before supper. I had a stuck push rod (common in older Bugs) in my 68 Bug. I took it to him at 10 am he called me at 3pm and told me to pick it up and charged me 20 bucks. He also told me a trick that worked, get some thin sheet metal or aluminum, cut it to cover the engine cover vents from the inside so I did, never had a problem starting it after a rain ever again. He was a gift to Volkswagen Bug owners, rest in peace Mr. Brake.

My brother used to live in Longview. Roughly 20 years ago, he took me to Oak Hill Auto. I remember buying some 66 back headlights. Awesome to see that.
There should be an air deflector tin on each cylinder set that snaps between the center case studs and intake pushrod tubes!!! Don't leave home without them!!! Many people toss them over in the dirty tin pile, and then leave them out because you have to remove the heads to install them!!! Yours are not installed,and may have been missing from prior mechanic, but your engine,(and pocketbook) will soon suffer without them!!!! Good luck guys!!

When you have an engine that hasn’t run in 20 years. The odds on you starting the thing and never having a problem with it is like winning the lottery four times in the same week. It’s always best to pull the engine do a complete tear down clean up and rebuild. It’ll only cost you a couple of gaskets and some time and you may just prevent serious damage by running the engine blind.

My dad still has a 74 Super in his driveway, rusted so bad that there are plants growing inside like a terrarium! I was going to have someone haul it away now that he and my brother are deceased, but now I'm thinking I might want to pull the engine and see if the block is any good. I have a 1970 Ghia with a balanced and blueprinted 1600 I built some years ago, and it runs like a dream, but it might be nice to have a second engine to play with. Thanks for the video!

a quick way to clear up a VW carb like that is to get it "running " like you guys had it than' plug the top of the carb with your hand/palm, It'll clear up the passages in the carb

As long as you don't have to split the case, redoing the jugs and the heads is a whole lot easier than just about any other engine. They'll run a good long time if they're in good shape.
Just a heads up not splitting the block could be a problem down the road I noticed you didn’t check the end play on the Crank and you also check the Rod Bearings without splitting the block the Torque setting is 30 ft lbs new heads and jugs will put extra pressure on the bottom end good luck to y’all I worked on those air cooled engines for more than 25 years
@@rickmartin7062 Yeah I need to get a balanced crank for my engines. One may run, other needs a complete overhaul, plus needs a generator, fan, shroud, swap on a Webber 2bbl in place of the Solex.
