A live performance by The Four Tops, of their last Billboard Hot 100 Top 20 hit, "When She Was My Girl". This performance was done live on ABC TV's late night comedy show, "Fridays", in 1981. Introduced by Fridays cast member, Bruce Mahler. Check out the exceptional performance by the brass section! Outstanding, IMO!

Who's listening in 2023? Great performance, class, and the horns in the band are excellent!! 👏👏❤😍💃🕺
I am!!!
I'm still listening, I was sixteen then in highschool.
I,m here
Here June 2023 N H.
I am still listening to this great music.
It is now 2024 and I am still listening. I grew up in the era of the four tops. I remember when this song was number one. I truly truly miss the music of the 70s the 60s and the 80s. Music meant so much more because it was the words that went with the music. Thankful to still be here and enjoying the music of my era❤❤
I agree they are still my favourites after all these years. Levi s voice can never be replaced and he was such a lovely person. God bless them.
If only we had a time machine eh !! 👍
I'm still listening in 2024! Boy I miss good music.
So do I, these oldies are the absolute best. ❤
Oh so do I!
april 2024 yes. still sounding great. never get tired of this.
Saw them with The Temptations at the mountain winery. I think it was in September 2023. They were tired and old, but they were still great and there was only one original I think from both maybe two from the Temptations that that was the best concert I’ve ever been to.
Let's keep them alive forever. Music like this should never be allowed to die. This is beyond Classic.
I agree 100 percent.
Yes
Totally agree, what a class act they were !!
A man who could have walked away from the Tops and been a solo mega-star, but stayed with his boys. A legend, and a model of selfless professionalism.
Very true, and well said.
Amen
EXACTLY.....A TRUE LEGEND!!!
Yes Levi Stubbs and cousin to Jackie Wilson! 🎙
Loved Levi Stubb's an artist voice
LEVI STUBBS--LOVED THIS BROTHER AND THIS GROUP--A CLASS ACT. RIP MY BROTHER!
God Rest Levi, you have left so many good memories.
Am listening 2023 also such great music, Iove love this music.😊
Real instruments/musicians…….no auto tune…4 men who can actually sing showing their talent. I am in my sixties….i miss the music of the 60s, 70s and early 80s. After that…it went to the dogs.
Levi Stubbs----my favorite singer of all time. He belongs in the same conversation as Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett----he is among the best of the best that R&B ever blessed us with. A giant.
EVEN BETTER….SUPER SMOOTH SILKY VOICE……CARRIED THE GROUP….
I agree. Could listen to him always

Wow, What A Gorgeous Song.
Beautiful song 🤍Hello from Scotland 🏴 How are you doing today? I hope it's been a nice day? HAPPY NEW YEAR WISHES 🎉🥳💖
Levi Stubbs was an amazing talent. Vastly underrated as a singer. Never got the recognition he deserved, which reminds me: Kudos to him for declining opportunities to go solo, out of deference to his fellow Tops. May the great man rest in eternal peace. Entertain God with that voice!
That. All. Right. That. Real. Ok
I read he turned down a movie role cause they didnt have parts for the other guys....
Yeah Man CLASS
A tribute to you Mr Stubbs. I am the big red girl KUTAI

I especially like this song because Levi sings the entire song more than harmonizing. I particularly love his voice when he belts it out. Wish young people would learn to sing again.
I thought this kind of music would last forever. What a powerful voice Levi Stubbs had! Glad I grew up in the 60's and 70's. Miss those days as far as great music goes!

He brings good clean energy to my very core. David ruffin does the same. 😊
Dec 2023. They’re still the soundtrack of my teenage years. Im old but the music isnt - still moves.
Levi Stubbs blessed us with his beautiful heartfelt voice. He was so gifted❗️
You don’t see showmanship like this anymore…so sad for the now generation.
And handsome to boot!
Levi and the boys are just loving this performance and so am I
Tears in my eyes as I replay these great performances all these years later!
TEARS is correct
same here David, so many memories. great music
I was born during this era of 4 tops, but I get sad too this music was wonderful and easy listening but still touches your heart and it's very enjoyable. Levi love this guy and I pray he, Lawrence and Obie are resting in peace.
Gets me every time too. Makes me so happy.

Levi Stubbs......a voice in a league of its own
Best group ever! They don’t make music like this anymore. Handsome gentlemen, great singers!👏🏽👏🏽🤗
Ur absolutely right---fròm north carolina.💞
That's my cousin Eddie "Chank" Willis whose guitar riff start this song. He was an original member of The Motown Session Band "The Funk Brothers" who churned out hit after hit for that Record Company. His distinct guitar can be heard on "Signed, Sealed Delivered", "I Was Made To Love Her" and many many more. He was self taught. His guitar style was very percussive. His chords usually coincided with the snare drum, that's how he got the nickname "Chank". So glad to have spent some quality time with him before he passed away August 20, 2018.....He's truly missed!
Certainly the early 70's into the mid 80's one of the Greatest Era of 🎵🎵🎵🎵. Never to Return.
I love all the Motown music the 4 tops where great and he is so beautiful 🍀
& a good character!
I believe that Levi Stubbs was the voice of motown an incredible group done by an incredible man that put it all together Barry gorgeous it's a shame that the kids of today don't have this music to go up to because I believe if they did we would have a lot less problems in this country thank you for everything you ever gave us and the entire motown group....
Look at the joy in Levi's eyes 💙💙
Levi Stubs was one of the greatest tenors I ever heard!
Saw The Four Tops at a soul weekender at a holiday camp here in England in the 1980's. We couldn't quite believe that we were in the company of these legends. Absolutely blew the place away, and did about an hour more than scheduled. The audience just kept screaming out for more. Then Levi did a solo version of Gloria Estefan's Cuts Both Ways. It will stay with me forever, and can still make the hairs on the back of my neck rise. Lovely, devoted friends who made such sweet music. Bless them all.
Levi’s version of ‘cuts both ways’ is magnificent.Bognor 1991 met them leaving I think they were staying at the Grand Eastbourne. No one in music has ever meant more to me than Levi
I'm 72 and I'm still listening to this wonderful music. I love the Four Tops and The Temptations..... you can't but be uplifted listening to their music....
What a great singer. I miss this music. Levi Stubbs and the Four Topps, gone but not forgotten ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Absolutely!! Never forgotten. Such an amazing era and this is real talent. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I'm 40yrs old and I'm loving this performance, my parents played alot of 4 tops especially my mom. Even though I was born this very year they are performing in this video. I love Levi all the videos I've seen he has the best voice. His rhythm, voice and that beautiful aurora he exudes from his inner man I just love. I'm moved over to tears because you could see and feel there love for each other and the performing. It's different then some of the other groups. The song is such a nice melody and a REAL live performance unlike today. Basically 4 tops was the perfect name these guys were the cream of the crop at Motown and as far as groups in there day.

Believe it or not this wasn't in their prime. Which was like 1965 through the 1970s. This song, their Grammy winning performance, was in 1982. I don't when this video performance was. But, just think of it, 15 years after "Bernadette", "The Same Old Sng", "I Can't Help Myself ", "Reach Out I'll Be There ", "Baby I'll Need Your Loving ", and so many more. And they were friends who had been together from High School. Instead of. What normally happens, where the best ones leave and go off on there own. (Such as Diana Ross, who actually wasn't the best. She was just the one that Berry Gordy liked and ended up having an affair with. As well as a couple of children. According to The other people at Motown, Flo Ballard had the greatest voice. Plus, she was the leader and founder of the group. Until Gordy got interested in Diana. And Flo also chose the name "Supremes". Which Diana didn't like.) Unfortunately Levi was the 1st to pass away. From cancer of course. There is a Video, on KZhead, of a great performance of Aretha Franklin and the 4 Tops with Levi (in a wheelchair) shortly prior to his passing.
One of the best voices of all times

We all miss those days. Levi was magical and never left.
Levi said, in an interview, he didn’t consider himself as “a heck of a singer”. Instead he thought of himself as more of a musical story teller. That’s fine, Levi, I’ll listen to your musical story-telling any day over the wannabes like Kanye.
Jackie Wilson was his cousin, and that's a tough comparison to live with. But what he lacked in virtuosity, he made up for with heartfelt emotion.

The Four Tops... The same four men till the very end. They said many times that they had a close relationship and even all lived near one another. That's why this group was so successful.
So many great songs by this group. They always went toe-to-toe with the Temptations. Both fantastic singing groups of the 60's. Levi Stubbs and David Ruffin were the greatest lead singers.
60' and 70' the greatest time to be alive.......

Cantgit Right Oh yes they were
Anne bell ,
The apex of professionalism. The Four Tops had been together 28 years, and would stay together another 16 years until Lawrence died. So relaxed, so at ease and yet in absolute control. And the band was the same way.
Yes, I think that the Four Tops are the only group that never had personnel changes until Lawrence Payton died in 1997. Most groups have multiple personnel changes including the Temptations and the Supremes. The Four Tops told Dick Clark in an interview that they hang out with each other and spend their spare time at each others house. They were not only professional friends but personal friends as well. I also like all of their post Motown records such as this record "When She Was My Girl" better than their Motown releases. I think the voices of the Four Tops were watered down with the inclusion of the Andantes in their backing vocals at Motown. However, after leaving Motown the Four Tops did not use additional back ups singers on the recordings which I preferred. Therefore their live performances such as this one sounded just like their recording.
