The Four Tops - It's The Same Old Song (1966) 4K

The Four Tops performing "It's the Same Old Song," released originally in 1966.
It reached #2 on the US Billboard R&B charts, #5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts, and #6 on the US Cash Box Top 100.
The Four Tops’ previous hit, “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch),” had topped the charts for two weeks, and the Motown team of Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland, and Eddie Holland wrote and produced both tracks. These men were famous for their ability to create hits on short notice, and this song was no exception.
"It's the Same Old Song" is a tribute to the previous hit, with the title itself acknowledging its similarity to its predecessor. The song explores the emotions of heartache and the aftermath of a breakup, with The Four Tops singing about hearing a song in a new light after a relationship ends. Even though the song is a sound-alike of their previous hit, Holland-Dozier-Holland's ability to create deeper meaning in their songs is still evident.
The Four Tops began their musical journey in 1960 with Columbia Records, releasing just one single, "Ain't That Love," written by their lead singer, Levi Stubbs. After moving to Riverside Records, the group eventually joined Motown in 1963. Motown head Berry Gordy rushed the release of "It's the Same Old Song" as soon as "I Can't Help Myself" came off the charts, hoping to stop Columbia Records from re-releasing The Four Tops' previous single, "Ain't That Love." Fortunately, Holland-Dozier-Holland and The Four Tops were well-equipped to create another hit, resulting in this iconic song.

She passed away 3 weeks after her 60th birthday back in 07. Now when I hear this song I cry because like the song says “ it’s the same old song but with a different meaning since you been gone” “it breaks me up to hear it” 😢
