You may not agree but I really think this is about the best record ever to come out of Motown. It has everything from the perfect backing of the Funk Brothers to The Haunting background vocals by the andantes and the amazing sound of holland-dozier-holland who can basically do no wrong as songwriters. And of course the astounding vocals of the Four Tops particularly the one and only Levi Stubbs, full of passion that is just this side of passing over into insanity. If this song doesn't give you Goosebumps the first time you hear it, you're probably already dead.

There were a lot of great male singers at Motown but for me Levi was the best. One thing that set him apart was that he was a baritone and most of the others were tenors. One of my fav groups of all time, and especially love bernadette. Grew up north of detroit, so motown was on all stations. My white parents listened, but i loved it. Was asleep on back seat of car late one night when baby i need your lovin came on(new release), i loved it. Loved “soul”. Carried me through some hard times. Music of that era is still my fav. Achingly moving. When i heard i only have eyes for you(1958 or so, flamingos), i thought it was the most beautiful song i’d ever heard. Imagine when james brown became popular, and i loved him, too. Oops! That was too much. Couldn’t have said so. My sisters liked the supremes, but i didn’t know anyone white who liked james brown back then. That good music has stood the test of time.

Beautiful souls
The absolute Gold Standard.
Levi Stubbs may be the smoothest dude to ever exist on planet Earth.
Just Magnificent 🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶
absolument magnifique , j'adore ....
Another great song by this great group. Love the lyrics, the melody in a minor key, the singing. This was when songs were songs.
This has to be one of the greatest songs ever written ... and performed by one of the greatest groups of all time. What voices these guys had!
So true, so true. My goodness!
You can't name a bad 4 tops song

Most soulful song EVERRRRR
Yes!!!!!!
100%! I feel every word ,note &word!!!! Amazing!!!!
Whoever Bernadette is, she is my hero! She had this man screaming for her!
If you really listen to this song..you see he really saying some serious shit👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽😮
BERNADETTE
I absolutely love this song!!!! It’s the same age as me!!!!! 55.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😂😂😂😂😂
TIMELESS
So of all the all-time great Motown singers Levi Stubbs may take the cake. Eddie Kendrick's is right there as well.
the lyrics damn🔥 they pretend to be my friend all the while they long to persuade you from my side
So many great songs came out of Motown in the 60's, from so many great vocal groups.
Superb music
Period!
When I listened to the Four Tops, they take me on an emotional journey to a feverish pitch that most singers don’t understand. Lead singer Levi Stubbs is in the stratosphere of baritone vocals.
I didnt think of it this way until I read your comment, but one could say that Levi probably inspired Teddy Pendergrasses style when you think of Lead baritone. Like Marvin Junior of the Dells too.
Just incomparable!
The pipes! Those pipes bring Jesus into your heart. Pure soul.
They were Brilliant fantastic along with the Temptations. They will never be replaced.
There's so much emotion in this man's vocals !!!
Levi had one of the best voices in music, Ever!
So good I named my dog Levi. what an incredible artist!
Superb.
This is one of my favorite Motown songs.
This is real music and not trash like we hear now days.
Talented and passionate musicians are still making music in 2023, you just have to go against what is popular. Don’t care about what others think about the music you listen to, care about what speaks to your soul.
Oldies, I could listen to them every single day . I never get tired of them... love the Four Tops...
The most underrated singer in history .
Love all motown and reggae danced our feet off I think we had the best music in our teens ❤️
. *GOD, HOW I LOVE MOTOWN. SADLY, I DON'T KNOW THAT WE'LL HAVE ANYTHING LIKE IT AGAIN.* . . - A Native San Franciscan born in 1952
You more than a dream, your a plan to me! Omg he stole my heart!!!
“ I am so thankful that I have the blessings of being able to have been born in 1961, so when I was a first grader I would hear this on the car radio… now 54 years later it has a deep impact on my psychic.”
This song is so beautiful a good name is radther to be chosen then riches. It is one of a kind.
I heard this song in middle school and never forgot it. For girls, Motown was their first love song.
Great song 🎵
encore ce titre sublime !!...
I named my basset hound Bernadette after this song. She is beautiful! And everyone loves her name.
Senior in high school when released.. All their music pure QUALITY!
Agree
I tell the world, he went in on this song😊
James jamerson. The best bassist to ever live and quit possibly his best song
Gorgeous voices handsome men all suited up top song back in the 70’s
Great song!
As a man i have to say Levi is what I would like to sing like if i was talented enough ....powerful and raw ,he sings like Chuck D raps
He has that Voice!!
dancing while roller skating at the rink. 1967
The music was once better and the artists classier and better dressers. SERIOUSLY!
True 💘 songs. Todays songs have nothing on this.
Nothing at all
Me and Bernadette go way back ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
What a classic
Levi puts such passion and soul into this song that you can feel every word he sings. I was 15 when this came out 55 years ago. Being a teenager The Four Tops would touch me emotionally and still do,
In 1967 this song came out the month I was born and my 18 year old parents called me Bernadette!!! It has one of the most funkiest bass lines ever played. James Jamerson 🐐!! The GReatest of all tiMe Thanku
Hi kid!
So gooooood....
Classic Four Tops
What a song. Theyre all trying so hard not to go let loose....
