3 ABORTED LANDINGS at PARO AIRPORT!! | Go Around in Extreme Winds | Missed Approach

As if the pilots don't already have enough on their plate, the strong winds blowing at the Airport made things even worse. Hats off to the pilots who landed the aircraft safely and did go-arounds when in the slightest doubt!
The flights in this video are Bhutan Airlines flight B-3718 from Mumbai (BOM) to Paro (PBH) and Druk Air flight KB-203 from New Delhi (DEL) to Paro (PBH). Both flights were operated by Airbus A319, which is capable of STOL (Steep takeoff and landing), which is required to get in & climb out of the valley!

I thought the camera was recording, but it wasn't. The screen wasn't clearly visible in the Sun, I missed it :( Will have to live with it now.. The pictures were clicked by my dad who was standing next to me!

@@muckeyduck3472 Maybe, but highly unlikely they would be practicing touch and goes in a $100,000,000 airplane. That's what sims are for.
@@flyingbatfish touch & go is part of an endorsement flight before a pilot is rated to fly the A320 & we do it in actual planes. But not in airports like Paro where you have to be a an experienced captain & specifically trained & rated to shoot an approach and land in that airport.

After using so many Modern and Complicated kind of Airports , Bhutan Airport felt Like a Paradise ,Surrounded by Mountainous terrain with Cold windy breeze . It was facinating to stay at a beautiful Resort , Just opposite the Paro Airport and Watching the Landing & ,taking off of the Flights The Fresh Air, Delicious Food , Fine Alcholic beverages with fine hospitality will be remembered for ever.

Oh the hotel is just next to airport. What's the hotel name? Room rate? Is it a busy airport? Like to go there.
A nice display of true airmanship on a difficult approach. I did not see any reason why the first attempt was aborted after a perfect approach. The main landing gear was just a foot or so from the runway on what looked like a safe landing was assured. I am a retired airline pilot so I can appreciate the skills these pilots have flying this approach and landing.

Is there a chance that this pilot was training go arounds for this airport? I dont know. Genuine question.
Maybe they ran out of the touchdown zone in that 1st try, or felt that way. The app and flare looked all good, but maybe "too good" to make a necessary firm touchdown.

Respectfully disagree. Not putting a craft down during satisfactory, doable approach is just courting danger. Get the damn plane on the ground and quit futzing around.
Respect to the pilots who step over their pride and go to another round! Sing of a professional ethical pilot who puts passengers' safety first.

Speaking as a person who has been in the jump seat for numerous takeoffs & landings at PBH on Bhutan Air & Druk Airover the past 1.5 decades & with the greatest respect to the talented Bhutan Air Pilots, the approach from the north & then a sharp 180 to land from the south was not an approved landing pathway for many years. Safe, yes but fraught with challenges for the crew during marginal atmospheric conditions in PBH that often occur without warning.. DrukAir pilots are/were directly trained by Airbus 319 trainers typically recommend that pilots only use the straight in Southern approach or the straight in Northern approach when available.
Agreed completely, some very skilled people in the cockpit. And you're lucky to have had the jumpseat there!

Lucky you! I had the great good fortune to be a passenger to Paro once and the string flight was a highlight of the trip.
And trained to not even attempt to land unless under certain conditions.

As a passenger, I always feel confident about my safety in flight, because I figure that the pilots don’t want to die anymore than I do. Even if they don’t care about the passengers, they certainly care about themselves and are going to do whatever they can to get the plane safely on the ground.

We didn’t have a go-around at Paro, but we did have to circle the airport for half an hour until the pilot could see the runway. It’s an amazing approach.

I don't think he "missed" the first attempt. He was lined up well but it looked like the crosswind was too strong. You can tell by the tilt of the wings.

The first approach was fine.. The wind rocked the wings a little bit but he recovered and would have landed fine. If others used this as a criteria for a go around... There'd be hundreds every day.

I am very much Fond of this Very Very Attractive Paro Airport . No doubt that Its so interesting to keep on watching the Landing and Taking Off of the Aircrafts at Paro . I had a Luck to stay about One Wk , just in front of this Airport and observe all those Exciting Activities there .

I actually filmed this from outside the perimeter. Security isn't much of an issue. I used an old Sony Handycam with 32X optical zoom :)

If I was a passenger on that first plane, I want the pilots to take as many go-arounds as they feel like. Touch and go some more. Here, take my money.

They may also fly in with a certified pilot in the jump seat to guide them as we have seen in the TriMG landing disaster. Wonder if they were getting a newbie on the route...
Could be, but 2 airplanes made 3 missed approaches that day. So I am tending more towards windy conditions :)
the first plane looked fine, I wonder why he went around. And I was looking at the trees and it really didn't look that windy.

captain's judgement felt something wrong so for the safety of the passengers he made a call
Short runway & the plane floated probably due to early flare so he went around. That’s what I think it was from my perspective as a pilot after checking the runway length of this airport. But none of us were in the cockpit to confirm it.
He probably saw that his airspeed was too high to enable stopping before the end of the runway. At an airport like this, it's critical to have the exact airspeed nailed down. The pilot exercised superior judgement.

As a Bhutanese, I would understand why there was multiple go-around. The mountains and high terrain does not cope with the high winds as well.

I landed in Paro in September 2019 and the taxi way at that time was not in operation. It is not dangerous if you have suitably qualified pilots. Challenging yes.
Any commercial airport should definitely be at most challenging! An actual dangerous airport should not exist!!

They get traffic for A318. On shorter routes they use ATR.
What insane telephoto are you using there?!
It's a Sony Handycam with max optical zoom of 32X. I usually use upto 25-30X, as it's not stable after that in my hand. This airport is quite small, so I'll actually not much fast from the closer end of the runway here!
How long does it take to circle around for another attempt? I saw charts and seems like a lot of extra miles.
20 minutes if I remember. I'll need to check timestamps on old videos, will update if I find something.
Flown into Paro several times, had a few aborted landings and a few where the weather got bad quickly and we had to return to Delhi and wait it out.

Why did the first plane go around when the landing was assured, and the wheels just inches from touchdown? It was a nice bit of airmanship just to get in the landing groove, only to abandon the landing.

Second attempt was a shocker. The first one looked good enough but he must have been at max crosswind. Never good to have that pedal to the metal and not straighten up the plane.

Pilot could have touched down on the very first attempt, seems well aligned. I wonder why did he decided to go around?
Tough to tell from here, but could be a windshear at the last moment, or maybe they had crossed the touchdown point. The runway is quite short, so one would not want to take the slightest chance. Never land if in 2 minds!

I don't know what happened with the first approach, it looked beautiful and about to be a perfect landing from the perspective of this video, but who knows what was transpiring in the cockpit.

First you practise take-offs twice, so you know for sure that you can get out of there, then you land... 😉

I'll check if I can find some info on that. There are a few other airports in Bhutan, but not sure if they can handle A319s. Guwahati, India might be a nearby option I guess...

Best way to confront this situation, brief and prepare the passengers. Throw them out with parachutes. The risk is only 3%, compared to the 💯💯mission aborts, standby, stress of pilots etc

That first approach appeared to tick all of the boxes. Could have been that Vat was too high?

It's just as bad as this! So they go with the wind (or against it should I say).
