@@shadowrosegaming3566 Actually if they are small enough they will never take damage from falling even if you drop them from a plane.
I grew up calling them sand crabs, which makes them a lot cuter! After a little practice it's fairly easy to spot their little breathers from far away, and to catch them with your hands! Even when they get up to over an inch long they couldn't hurt you if they tried.
I honestly had no idea he was talking about sand crabs at first, I remember going to the beach and catching them and putting them in buckets of water and sand and seeing them crawl around and bury themselves
I always called them kitties since I first found them on Kitty Hawk in North Carolina. I still call them kitties to this day :)

yess!! my grandpa taught me how to find sand crabs and i've taught all my younger cousins and sibling how to do it as well! there's never a trip to the beach without someone ending up finding a bucket full of sand crabs!

People complain about getting bit by sand fleas though and I don’t think these things bite. They’re cute too
@@Marynicole830 someone in my town went on a vacation and some of these little assholes decided to climb on their head, burrow, and lay eggs. When they came back the kids missed the beach so they played in the local sand pit. Let’s just say half the town getting infested and countless hours of sifting sand later they’re finally gone after like 2 years.
@@Marynicole830 no but sand fleas are tiny bugs that can hop up to maybe an average-height person's knee and do bite
Yes, because sand fleas are actual insects. They bite you and make you itch real bad. We have them in Hawaiʻi and they're not fun. I've never once heard anyone call sand crabs, sand turtles, or mole crabs by the colloquial term "sand fleas". That's definitely a new one for me. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culicoides
@@Marynicole830 what he's catching here are mole crabs, so named because they can quickly burrow beneath the sand. Beach fleas or sand fleas are little copepods that you find hopping around on the beach if your turn over dead seaweed & they do bite.

@Anthrest Where I'm from there used to be a hermit crab seller near my old school and whenever school ended I would buy one and keep it until it got big or died, good times, and a waste of lunch money 😅

I love hermit crabs I have 7 of them ^^ although they have a tendacy to tap on the glass and make cricket like noises at 3am 😂

I always thought sea fleas were cute. When I was little the first thing id do at a beach is dig for them. I'd put them all in a bucket with a few other creatures and then put them back when I was done.
They were delicious. I bought them a few time when i visit a beach in Indonesia. The local deep fried them, then season them with salt and msg

Just a reminder that these are not fleas, they're shellfish. They taste good and if you like shrimp or crab, you'll probably like these, too.
I loved playing with those things as a kid. Wait for the wave to come in and then get a big double scoop of sand and you can feel millions of them trying to wriggle through your fingers. Awesome little creatures
We called them sand crabs and my brother and I would always dig for them. They tickled your hand when you hold them.
Always called ghost crabs sand crabs cause the do this too but they dig faster and deeper

On the west coast we call them sand crabs
They ARE sand crabs - crustaceans. Sand fleas are arthropods, completely different critter.

I always loved digging for these as a kid! Heck, my Dad's dog loves them too! It's really cute as she looks so excited when she sees him digging for them.
Side note: Sand Fleas on Paris Island are no joke. Those things will eat you alive.

Was in Big Sur camping back in 2010 and got to see the bioluminescent plankton. (Had no idea something like that existed at the time) The sand flees were all glowing green under the sand and each step we took would light up and slowly fade, such an amazing experience.

Aww I love those little guys! They’re pretty easy to spot and catch without those big fancy rakes. Just look for the little triangles in the sand as the water goes back out to sea :D

My 9 year old was OBSESSED with finding these when we went to the beach last summer! Her and her friends had such a good time finding them.
