‘A War-Making Machine’: Why NATO Should Be Abolished w/ Vijay Prashad

2024 ж. 21 Ақп.
58 362 Рет қаралды

Last week, the two war-mongering factions in the US argued over the future of NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, as a tool for maintaining US global hegemony. Trump touted at a campaign rally that when he was president he told an unidentified NATO leader that he would encourage Russia to “do whatever the hell they want” with member countries that were “delinquent.” The comments provoked a firestorm, with a range of Western officials, including Biden, rushing to denounce the remarks while reaffirming their unwavering loyalty to the imperialist alliance. Vijay Prashad, the Executive Director of the Tricontinental Institute, joins the show to expose how the Democrats’ Pro-NATO position and Trump’s “America First” foreign policy, which calls for the US to pull out of NATO, are merely two sides of the same imperialist coin. Prashad explains why abolishing NATO is an urgent necessity to save the global population from more destructive wars.

  • Had it been abolished in 1990-1991...it would have ended with the mission succeeded without firing a shot. It would also assured Russia that the Cold War was truly over and that while defeated... it would have been easier to bear that defeat instead of NATO still existing and what was to follow. And it truly would have been a peace dividend. For with NATO still existing and combining with the Russian economy about to go into freefall...to Russia well it felt like Versailles Treaty and great depression but infinitely worse.

    @andrewnlarsen@andrewnlarsen3 ай бұрын
    • It wasn't so much that Russia was "defeated" as that it no longer wanted to play the cold war game anymore. That's the problem with the USA: it's elites saw the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact in military rather than political terms; that like Germany and Japan before it, Russia had been vanquished and good had finally triumphed over evil. Instead, what they should have seen was a recalibration of Russian foreign policy, a period of time-out whereby Russia could rest and recuperate. It was not a final end but rather a period of transition and, though communism may have ended, history - and Russia as a state - certainly had not. Russia was down but not out.

    • The problem is, had there been any other unexpected conflicts popping up and threatening Europe, we would have been left without proper defenses. So the existence of NATO overall is a good thing, though the West should've been more politically savvy with Russia to ensure them as an ally instead of an enemy, as they are today.

  • The 'Arsenal of Democracy' produces 40 percent of the world's weapons. It is a very profitable business model in which other countries buy these weapons to fight each other. The key is maximizing profits without shedding US blood by inducing conflicts between and within countries outside the USA. One client is eager to spend AUD 368 billion to buy a few high-quality used nuclear-powered submarines. This business model's critical components are NATO, QUAD, ANZUS, Five Eyes, AUKUS, and MCC (Mutual Cross-Service Agreement).

  • War makes no heros only victims! "Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger." -- Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials
