The Weakness of US Empire & Defeat in Afghanistan: New Book by Vijay Prashad and Noam Chomsky

2022 ж. 13 Қыр.

The U.S. government has destroyed cities, countries, and towns around the world, through bombs and air raids, military ground invasions, naval attacks, economic sanctions and strangulation, coups, and more. Some say U.S. force is never ending, others say it’s on a fast decline, almost gone forever. Vijay Prashad and Noam Chomsky argue in their new book, “The Withdrawal: Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, and the Fragility of U.S. Power,” that U.S. military might is somewhere in the middle: it’s fragile.
Brian is joined by Vijay Prashad, the Executive Director of the Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, Chief Editor of LeftWord Books, and author of a new book with Noam Chomsky called “The Withdrawal: Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, and the Fragility of U.S. Power.”

  • Mean-while in Afghanistan: When America pulled out of Afghanistan it froze Afghanistan’s government funds held in foreign banks so the Taliban could not get it. Corrupt American politicians plan to use these funds to compensate American corporations for what happened in September 11. So now Afghanistan has no overseas funds to buy food for its starving populations. Nothing else as important as this is a worthy issue in Afghanistan news but the root cause is the west not respecting Afghan cultural beliefs like it was a crusade. The Innocent Afghanistan public are paying the price of September 11 with their lives. Rather than America, NATO and UN handing over in a planned way to the Taliban with assistance to the Taliban with issues like how to run a modern country, they just abandoned the Taliban after 20 years of colonialist control, exploitation and hegemony. Shame on you America!

  • On 9/11 in 1973 Pinochet together with the active help of the US(CIA) waged a coup on the democratically elected president Allende in Chile, and toppled his government in a coup that was so brutal and bloody, they still talk about the monstrosity of its killing around 30000 people most of whom were brought to the stadium, tortured and killed, they even had helicopters taking the bodies and throwing them into the sea. Imagine the loss of many intellectuals and patriotic martyrs who could have advanced Chile in their capacity as Artists, Teachers, Poets, and all others who wanted Chile to be free of the cancer of Capitalism. While the US commemorate its victims of 9/11 it should repent, and announce its dirty role in that coup and many others in the world, and stop lecturing us about Human Rights which it uses as a lip service to further its coercion and control.

  • What can America claim to be exceptional at? Let’s take a closer look and ask a few simple and obvious questions. Can it claimed to be exceptional at reducing: homelessness Infant mortality drug addiction drug deaths gun violence wars racism healthcare cost educational cost income inequality police violence infrastructure decay societal conflict monopolies road rage food insecurity poverty obesity arrogance and on and on and on…? America had nearly 250 years to achieve this exceptionalism, shouldn’t that be enough time? Can it claim to be exceptional at all the things that makes life worth living, that makes life exceptional such as: affordable healthcare affordable education affordable housing personal safety a promising future a sense of connection to society common prosperity camaraderie a sense of responsibility towards the unfortunate and on and on and on…? Again, America had nearly 250 years to achieve this exceptionalism, shouldn’t that be enough time? Can it claim to be exceptional at all the things that makes a person, a society, a culture, a civilization humane? One more time, America had nearly 250 years to achieve this exceptionalism, shouldn’t that be enough time? If It can’t, then what’s the point?

    • The USSR won WWII and those aligned with communism/international revolutionary movement were the only ones fundamentally opposed to what all the fascists around the world believed. Proof can be found in the business dealings of American corporations, such as Coca Cola and Ford, continuing and expanding production in and with Nazi Germany and occupied territories. Since Operation Paperclip has been analyzed in detail, the amount of evidence against the US/west and their rewritten history is unsurprisingly a complete load of bs, mostly completely fabricated. Reigning absolute horror and hell on Nagasaki and Hiroshima after Japan had all but unconditionally surrendered, purely to threaten Stalin and the USSR who had just won the war for the world. Not to mention the absorption of high up Nazi officers and scientists into top positions of power in the government, NASA and NATO. A truly despicable history and track record.

  • Personally on the subject of international relations, I’d rather work with an authoritarian country that generally leaves other countries alone, than a democracy that aggressively tries to subjugate other countries. I’d be sympathetic with their citizens who might be oppressed, wouldn’t want the system for my own country, but to be perfectly honest that’s more palatable to me than a country that treats their own citizens very well but cruel and exploitative to other countries’ people. You’d think that how a govt treats their citizens correlates with how they treat other countries, but that is not true at all. Even in personal life we know it’s not true; so many examples of abusive parents who are wonderful to neighbours, and conversely people who protect and spoil their own family at the expense of abuse and exploitation of others. If we can work with non-interventionist authoritarian countries (remember that monarchies are authoritarian countries too), I’d like to think that over generations, and increasing safety and prosperity, they’d eventually relax and become less authoritarian. But it takes a long time. Diffusion of values through Asia from the more advanced continental civilisations to the younger ones happened, but it took a few hundred patient years. But if you work with a democratic but imperialist country, you run a high risk of being destroyed, and it is very unlikely to influence them to become less imperialist, no matter how many hundreds of years it takes. In other words, what I want from my leader is to for them to protect me and make possible a decent life. But what I want from another nation’s leader first and foremost, is for them to restrain their nation from harming mine. For this reason I really don’t care how they are able to restrain their nation; through democratic values or through religious commitment or through authoritarian control.

  • I agree with a lot of the things talked about in this video except the part about communism. You can't force a political and ideological system into a country where majority don't believe in it. For Afghanistan, Islam was and is a way of life eventhough I agree most afghans didn't practice Islam as it should've been but it clashed with communism, so it didn't take much encouragement from the US to overthrow the communist government. Also the fact that the communist parties in Afghanistan committed atrocities and human rights abuses did not help either.
