1:24 Osprey are one of the few raptors with opposable talons, which allow them to turn the fish into the direction of flight, making the "cargo" aerodynamic. You can see him do this here. He also takes the time to shake off water weight, thereby sacrificing altitude, then turns on the "afterburners" to avoid going back into the "drink". I always love that move!
@carlwilliams6977 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. Like a person surfing on a surf board, one leg at the front, one leg at the back. I used to respect the prowess of the fish eagle, that was before I saw the dive of the kingfisher. Then while I revered the kingfisher, so did I learn the Osprey. Since then, I hold it as number one fishing bird. Though the garnet can dive and swim, it doesn't carry the fish out of the water, except the ones in its stomach.

Magnificent! That fish weighs as much or more than that bird. I cannot even get back into a kayak if I am in the sea. To think I have to lift my own body weight, with wet feathers, out of water, with my prey struggling to get free, and then take off in flight is mind boggling. Even Olympic athletes could not do that. Nature is so strong. We are so weak. The photography was stunning! That shake in mid flight, just wow!!!! Notice how close to the wall the osprey was. His wings were brushing against the wall. Why? Because he had to come in at an angle where his shadow did not fall on the water and warn the fish of his approach. He calculated his shadow would land on the wall at that angle distance but he would still clear it. As he got to the water, he came off the wall and you can see the shadow land on the water. Too late. His wings also bent backwards and talons first to grab the fish and slice the water cleanly. This bird had to calculate his trajectory before hunting. I'll never call anyone a bird brain again! Smart bird.

I love Osprey with all my heart. And if you're Billy Bass, they are definitely bad news! However, if you're going to rate "badass birds", Owls have to be at the TOP of the list! To list just one feature, they have special feathers on the leading edge of their wings, so prey doesn't hear them coming! The feathers sacrifice speed for stealth. If prey doesn't know you're there, you don't need to be fast! 😊 Then, there's the night vision. A Great Horned Owl can make life hell for an Osprey mom (or any other bird or critter for that matter)! At night, they simply have no competition.

Awesome! Excellent Osprey hunting footage! Didn't exactly freefall, by the way - that's more what Peregrines do - yet it was a very fast, controlled dive - the wings of the great bird brushing the sides of the dam wall. What is most amazing is how the bird rose up out of the water, then adjusted the profile of the fish to make it more stream-lined in the air, then shook off the remaining water in it's neck. This is the best diving kill video I have seen of any bird of prey. The bird jumps completely into the water as if it was a waterfowl and then flies back up carrying a fish. It would take immense strength to fly off when the feathers are soaked wet. The bird controls its descent by scraping its wings to the wall which is extremely unique. It appears that the 2 dives are different attempts as in the first dive the bird does not scrape its wings to the wall but it does so in the 2nd attempt. It is surprising how the videographer was prepared with high quality equipments on some random water reservoir just for this moment! I would have preferred the natural sound of water rather than the music as it would give a better feel of the situation -

Had the privilege of seeing one of them in action. It was hovering over a trout lake and I didn’t realize it was an osprey. Thought it was just a hawk. Then it dropped 20 ft. straight into and under water and came out with a trout. Funny thing was a crow was watching the whole thing too and chased him around, presumably trying to get him to drop it on land. After a minute or so the crow gave up and the osprey flew off with dinner:) Immediately started searching birds of prey and found out that ospreys are the only non-sea birds of prey that will dive completely under water. Also learned they have a different talon than others that acts more like a thumb, allowing them to hold on to large fish and fly for long distances, holding the fish forward for aerodynamics. Truly remarkable creatures!

I’ve seen their nests on the poles along the highway headed to to Guerrero Negro in Baja. They’re using the poles which are several miles away from the ocean because there are no trees anywhere to be seen in that desert landscape. It was hard to believe they were building nests so far away from the ocean considering how far they had to lug a fish back to the nest.

Check out Osprey the ultimate Fisher, on KZhead.
The Osprey's wings are amazingly flexible, this helps the bird launch itself easily from the water. Fantastic filming😊
Thanks
There’s a saying that you took the words right out of my mouth, but this time it couldn’t have been more true. I was going to make the exact same comment, pretty much word for word. Great minds must think alike. 🤣🤪. Kudo’s to the fabulous photographer and the incredible Osprey and especially to the fish for being such a good sport about it.
Thanks for that. Something to think about.
You've probably seen the KZhead video: "Osprey the ultimate Fisher.". If not, search for it. You won't be disappointed!
@@carlwilliams6977 thanks again

I agree. Excellent filming!

Spectacular! Loved seeing the osprey shake the water off while holding that big fish and flying. Great camera work!
Thank you 😊
The sheer power to come up out of the water holding a fish, and take off with wet wings against the wind force being pushed by the falling water from the dam. I thought he was going to lose the fish at one point, but he grabbed the fish and then shook himself off in mid-flight like, yeah, I do this every day!
Beautifully explained . It’s as good as watching the video itself.
I think he (she) was aiming the fish in the direction of flight for streamlining. Notice the cross legged position toward the end?
@@stephenandloriyoung5716 Yes, the bird did align the fish. I noticed that too, where the right leg went behind the left to have the fish aligned with the flight path.
He does do it every day!
😃😃😃😎
I love how the Osprey shakes his head and neck feathers, and then his wing feathers, while in mid air flight. It enables him to be able to fly better...more aerodynamic if feathers can move in their proper and respective places. What a marvelous airborne/water predator. Amazing and magnificent bird...master of two worlds.
They can fly backwards! I once watched an osprey flying over a field. It was doing grid patterns and flying backwards. They use the wind to move them.
And the manoeuvre the fish straight ahead for aerodynamic efficiency too. Amazing.
FYI: Fastest animal on Earth is the peregrine falcon! Check it out!
@@LeroyBraun So cool! Thanks for the info!
Best of the Best.
Our creature world demands such respect and admiration ... just calculating all the aspects and ability to pull this off speaks so clearly of an awe inspiring intelligence !!
Well said sir . That’s truly amazing.
Especially the intelligence and creativity of our creator God!
Also the awe inspiring ability to calculate the bend that water causes. Nothing underwater is exactly where it appears and the osprey has to adjust for that. Really amazing!
natural selection and programming
the strength to fly away from the water
Yes 🙌 and strength is life insurance ! Sometime physical and sometime Mental 😎
Yes, but notice how it uses the up-draught of air created by the falling water to quickly get height.
What really gets me is the ability of this bird to shake off the water in flight mode holding onto the prey
That amazed me too
Me 3!
My spirit animal.
I'm going to guess pumping it's body while flapping gives it the force to lift up.
Thank you for sharing this. It's so amazing what all of us can see now at home on our couches thanks to people like you that go out and live it. THAT WAS AWESOME!!!

Legend says osprey is still giving the fish that flying tour.
This is the best video I've ever seen of an Osprey diving and rising back up in the air. He even shook himself of in mid flight! Amazing!
Thank you 😊
Magnificent! Smart bird.
Birds are members of the dinosaur family: no wonder they dominated large land lifeforms for 150 million years.
I agree with everything you've said, except that an osprey cannot lift a fish that weighs as much or more than it does. They're incredible, but not Superman.
Yes. It's a wonderful video of an exquisite creature doing what it does best. But the fish cannot possibly "weigh as much or more" than the bird. Can't happen.
@@denysarcuri1213 birds have hollow bones and they are as light as a feather.
The average adult Osprey weighs 3 pounds and they eat fish which are generally 4-12 inches in length. It looks like about a 12" fish and the average weight of a fish that size is just under a pound. Therefore, I doubt it's carrying more than its body weight.
What great photography. He caught it all very clearly in fascinating slow motion. I never knew Osprey's wings were that long and powerful.
Thank you 😊
Impressive & thank you . The bird's wings in flight seems so gracefully easy.

I can watch that over and again as ospreys are one of my favorite raptors. Great capture

Osprey’s are the most “Bad Ass” bird out there. Have always been my favourite bird.
Agreed 💯
I love Osprey with all my heart. And if you're Billy Bass, they are definitely bad news! However, if you're going to rate "badass birds", Owls have to be at the TOP of the list! To list just one feature, they have special feathers on the leading edge of their wings, so prey doesn't hear them coming! The feathers sacrifice speed for stealth. If prey doesn't know you're there, you don't need to be fast! 😊 Then, there's the night vision. A Great Horned Owl can make life hell for an Osprey mom (or any other bird or critter for that matter)! At night, they simply have no competition.
@@carlwilliams6977 Owl’s and Ravin’s ( Gypsy Turkeys) are my 2nd and 3rd favourites. On my farm there is a family of Barred Owls, sometimes it sound like a zoo at night. I have 2 Ravens that I feed in the morning, their new baby Raven is making an appearance now.
@@cerberus7.625 I believe that Ravens are the only birds that actually enjoy the sensation of flight. All the other birds see it as a form of transportation, while the ravens seem to realize how cool it is that they can do it!
It is a must see, but not because of the bird's "free fall", which was a beautifully controlled dive. Because we got to see it reemege and take off, control the fish, shake off the water in flight... and she probably does it day in and day out.
The bird's a he...females have a dark "necklace" of chest feathers; males are all white on their chests, with maybe a few dark feathers...
If mama is nesting then papa brings her fish. The female stays on the nest most of the time.
Amazing video. Thanks. I’m no bird expert, I only know that I love to watch these amazing creatures on the Rogue River in Oregon. Such power and beauty.

HI, as a pilot, I like the way they turn the fish so that is points into the wind to reduce drag on their flight. They have aerodynamic sense.
OR THEY GO HUNGRY WHEN THEY DROP THE FISH...LOL NATURE FINDS A WAY...LOL
WHOA!!! They are the most amazing birds. Love to hear their voice, too. We have their nest nearby. Get to see and hear them often but never like this! BRAVO!!!!
Thank you 😊
Awesome footage. Thank you!
Thanks 💯
Agree, was a dive not free fall. I live on a lake and see our osprey several times a week. Amazing how they can rise out of the water with a huge fish
1:45 it almost looks as if he's surfing the air and the fish is the board. Amazing
I would have preferred the natural sound of water rather than the music as it would give a better feel of the situation -
Thanks 😊
I think the wall scraping was due to shadow of bird. Shadows on water alert the fish of danger. So bird kept his shadow off the water. It was not to control the descent. It was to control his shadow.
Shrujanam Syama -- I agree with you about the music, which is not only horrendous (then again, that's just a matter of taste) but also way too loud. Still, the video is worth it because the camerawork is spectacular, kudos to the author! And of course that osprey is beyond amazing, what a beautiful work of art by mother nature!

@@sick_shotz_photography7908 I forgot to mention the fish. Nice sized fish..... big enough to feed one human OR a family of raptors. To me it looked like some type of trout(?). I just checked some of your other vids and subscribed. Beautiful stuff. Keep up the great work, brother. I'd never before seen a "hitchhiking" bird, although I have heard of this. Why would a red-wing ride on a raptor? Is it protecting its territory? Is it hoping to get some scraps from the fish dinner? What is his endgame?

Used to watch bald eagles do this where I camp by a river, however they didn't fully submerge. Incredible birds...Ospreys.
Now that’s what I call … SKILLS…🦅
Osprey: "I'm just gonna shake myself off a little here, and point this thing forward like a torpedo." Fish: "I wish I would die already."
My favourite part was the swipe along the wall with it's wing tip as it plummeted. Very cool.
I love ospreys .. I love the ocean and the wonderful creatures who live in it and frequent its shores. When my local osprey was entangled in fishing wire we pulled over to try and do something to help. We couldnt get to him no matter what we tried to do to get him to come down off the ledge. It broke our heart. That was the last time we seen him. Please do not throw trash into our rivers and oceans. Please dont leave behind your fishing line . mahalo JT

Right before hitting the ground it spread its wings and knocked a pigeon down back to the ground that was trying to flee just but was a tad bit too late. Freaking AWESOME!!!
That's not a "free fall", that's their typical dive. He was just clever enough to find a perch he could do it from! Could have lived without the hyperbolic music. No need to gild the lily! Nice shooting otherwise.

Look up the meaning of "free fall." The last second or so before it hit the water was exactly what "free fall" describes. By that point, the bird had pinpointed the spot he/she would enter the water.

I was thinking "are you gonna drop it" and he answered with a shake of his head!!! André
Osprey is the best to watch. Last 2 months in PA seen one at a football field sized pond. Amazing hovering and acrobat. Saw a bald eagle chase an osprey away the other day. Got a family of falcons in a city park. Huge herons beem atound for 30 yrs now in Pa. Ospreys hit the water hard when fishing.
Great photography...TKS for sharing..
Thank you 😊 your very welcome
Amazing footage. To see them adjusting their feet and shaking their head and wings mid-flight, breathtaking. Wasn't enamoured by the music but footage was so good you have to continue watching.
Thanks 💯
This might be the best osprey video I have ever seen! Nice mate!
Thanks man 💯
Nice filming.....I love watching our Ospreys at the lake do this.... I've only been this close once, most of the time it's 3 times further away but still cool to watch....thanks for posting!!!
