This is arguably the most dramatic comeback of an unseeded player in Grand Slam history. I saw it on TV live.
If Stan hits 87 winners to 77 errors in the SF, it's called 'one of the matches of the year' and the very next day Ostapenko hits 54 winners to 54 errors, it's called 'too inconsistent', 'hits too many errors'. It's a grand slam final FFS and that young lady played fearless tennis that many others could only dream of. Give credit where it's due!
Sidd Sakhamuri 87 winners to 77 unforced errors is better than 54 winners to 54 unforced errors by a ten point margin. Also, I'm a big fan of the women's game, but I think it's wholly disingenuous to say the Wawrinka-Murray SF was not of a higher quality than the Ostapenko-Halep final. Halep was at a deficit on the Winners to unforced errors count and she only hit 8 winners. 8! The Murray-Wawrinka SF was high quality shot-making and point construction tennis from both players. Halep-Ostapenko was "keep the ball in play and wait for my opponent to make errors" (Halep) vs "hit the ball as hard as I can" tennis (Ostapenko). How many times did either come to the net? And how many times did either win the point when they came to the net?
Yeah! And where is Ostapenko today?
@@michaelobgy She's doing pretty well. Wimbledon semi-final, Miami final, couple of WTA titles, amazing doubles career. Most of the players only dream about this.
@@jamesclement8985 Ostapenko finished lots of points off at the net
@@rolinti9146 No she didn't. Ostapenko came to the net 9 times and won 7 of those points. Halep 2 times. How many points did Ostapenko win in totality? 102 points! 7 points out of 102 points does not seem like a lot to me.
saw this coming, and halep didn't pass up this opportunity , OSTAPENKO TOOK WHAT SHE WANTED
It's funny how everyone keeps saying she makes too many errors but here she is winning the French Open. That's her style of play! She's goes for everything and it paid off these two weeks.
I'm so miss ostapenko this version
Her being fearless made Osta a grand slam champion!
Excellent shot-making! Wonderful forehand and that short killer backhand. What a recovery from 3-0 down in the second set. Way to go girl.
I never get tired of seeing Halep lose
Yes, that was an amazing comeback from Aljona. And she's so beautiful too
Somewhere Naoimi Broady is cringing ...
vbarragan23 lol XD
She should be. Ostapenko is a brat.

Ostapenko's winners were just too good and she's so mentally strong. Deserved to win, great to see young player step it up. There's a lot of talent on Tour but they just can't win these big matches. I hope she will improve her serve and reduce UEs but still what a talent this girl is. Also, 5 minutes highlights, daaamn.
still to short , they missed two crucial aces in the third
At 3-0 and two chances to break in the second set Simona had the trophy in her bag. She lost that game, she was still a break up but from that moment on she started to play very defensive which allowed Ostapenko to attack, and attack. Jelena could have easily lost the match. In the end she more than deserved it, she earned it.
She's not mentally strong at all. She was fearless and a huge underdog. We'll see how mentally strong she is now that everyone knows she's got game.
debussy84 she is mentally strong because being in the final when no one expected you to be there is overwhelming.
Feliciano Guevara, Have you seen Stan play? There are plenty of guys on the ATP tour that play all or nothing tennis. Stan has more unforced errors in the first 3 sets of his match against Andy than Jelena had in her 3 sets. 23 of her 54 errors came in the first set. I get it. It's only a problem when the women play like this, right? >.> This ain't the Superbowl. Defense might help you win the Superbowl but in tennis, offense wins. Simona only had 8 winners. Even Angie Kerber, who many refer to as a pusher had 20+ winners in both her GS victories. If defense won grand slams, Caroline and Aga would both have a mantle full of trophies.
Ostapenko's power/size ratio is just so amazing, being able to ripp the ball that way despite being a girl and only aged 20 is out of this world.
3:56 The weirdest "net" point I've ever seen.
yeah, the nail in the coffin. The ball was clearly going out
you should see Clisters one then
I would LOVE to see a full video of Jelena Ostapenko's facial reactions to the other players' winners and more. Jelena is a comic many times, more than any other, I think.
She's '97 kid and am too ;) Yay!!! I became her big fan
Great performance by Ostapenko! Some shots from her racket were unbelievable!
Remember the name people, this girl can only get better, she still has a few floors in her game, her serve can be better, she sometimes rushes to hit a winner very early, misses a lot of shots makes many unforced errors. But my word what a talent, a very well deserved victory today, she just wanted it more and played ultra aggressively in that 3rd set.
Better? Hahaha funny
@@cristinabejan3842 oh man, it's hard to predict anything in the long term (even mid) in WTA, players are so inconsistant
@@IAMSOUND99 That's why it's better to let things unfold and try not to predict them, because you might be wrong and get disappointed.
this didn't age well... altho she is getting better this year.
like fine wine...maybe not haha. She only got bigger, dumber and more inconsistent
A new star is born.
and seems like she was prematurely born :)))
in tennis great defense wins games, great attack wins championships
In tennis a great game is what wins you titles, being good on offence and shitty on defense will win you nothing, just as being good on defense and shitty on offence.
except of course Rafael Nadal.......
Konrad Fereczy No, Nadal is actually better aggressively than he is defensively, don't get me wrong he is probably the best defender in the men's game but his aggressive game (especially his forehand) is what wins him matches, Nadal for instance never defends unless he absolutely has to.
In baseball we use to say "good attack win games, but good defense win the title". In tennis it's the opposite, because when you meet the best of the ranking (usally quarte finals, semi and final), only great defense isn't enough. Dave Rogers, perfectly said! Gherbi Hicham you are very wrong, before Federer era, there was a lot of shitty defense players that were great champions, look at Sampras, Rafter, Ivanisevic and others. Returning every single ball is great (defense), you will win a lot of games, but when you reach the finals, it isn't enough because the attack is much more refined for any defense. What I mean on Nadal is, when his strokes are short and high, he suffers and lose much more than when he hits deep and high. So, in order to win against Wawrinka, Nadal must attack deep and wide, because even being a great defender, he can't stop Wawrinka's attack all the time.
watchman1969 I
Deserved winner👍🏻🔝👏🏻🏆🏆
I agree Halep played far to safe even on match point landing the ball right in the middle of the service box just wasb't good enough but I hope she wins this one day great match hope for a rematch a Wimbledon although am rooting for Petra at wimbledon
Jan Jansen fuck you
Never liked Halep, that scream is irritating.
SA VlogsR Triggered hahahaha
Gorgeous tennis from Ostapenko. If she adds some variety and improves her serve, the rest of WTA better watch out.
You were right!
Sadly it never happened 🙈 what a player she would’ve been 😳 with that kind of Tennis 🎾 she actually was unbeatable 🤩
@@---jm4cz good. Can’t stand that brat
Lol.
@@---jm4cz nah she’s back
Great match from both of them. Ostapenko wears her heart on her sleeve. She looses a point and lets every one know it was bad but when she is good she wins the french open. Her unrelenting default behaviour is to attack at every opportunity it's a delight to see her pace of shot combined with good placement and the effect it has on opponents. Halep should ask why she was under constant pressure when serving - the stats can give her the answer she made 0 double faults and got 73% first serves in but was winning only 55% on first serve.
I cant just belive it OMG, poor Halep she has struggled so much but i think one day she wil win a Slam. But to be honest even though she comitted a lot of Faults Ostapenko deserved to win I love her playing style and she is so calm. CONGRATULATIONS JELENA!!! ,,
comming back from 4:6 and 0:3 with Haleps advantage for 0:4 was something unbelievable...
our badass girl won!
LATVIJA VIS LABAKA!!
Erik : Who is bigger in Latvia ? Ostapenko or Porzingus ? Hell I like 'em both. KP is solid in NY and the NBA. Or should I say who is better ( labaka ) ?
My knowledge of Latvia is pretty limited. I have checked it out from time to time. It seems like a nice / good place. And the only reason I looked was because of Kristaps Porzingus. ; he also made me an ostapenko supporter. I now live in the UK. Soccer is the only sport here. Not only but main. By a mile. Its good to see that basketball is pretty much a world game also. I see how the european influx has developed the game to where it is right now.
Soccer in USA! nub :)
Somewhere in the crowd, you can hear Broady saying: "She hit the ball boy. Accidental? NO WAY!"
What a legendary experience for the twenty-year-old. I'd really love it if Simona could win, but you never know what's gonna happen on tennis court. Many congrats to Ostapenko!
amazing.. im happy for her
50 winners contra 9 da adversária... Ostapenko é uma espancadora de bolinhas da mais alta categoria! Todas as jogadoras defensivas que jogarem contra ela terão problemas porque ela não espera o erro do adversário.. ela faz o ponto acontecer! Impressionante...
The best women players nowadays strike harder and play much faster than men 20 years ago. :p Halep is incredible, she runs everywhere and catches up balls normally impossible to catch up! But the very young and without doubts future very great Ostapenko is incredible with power! These winning shots are gunfire! If she happens one day to have a bigger regularity in her shots, she will be practically unbeatable... Congratulations at these 2 players for this very nice Final 2017
This was a fairy tale for young Ostapenko. First professional title: Roland Garros
what a fight!! congrats to both finalists Ostapenko has amazing qualities and I really love her attitude of always going all the way and take the biggest risks. And to come back in the second set after 6-4 3-0 is amazing!
I gave credit and Salute to young Latvian sensational Jelena Ostaphenko, she just produced amazing, classical combine technique in women Tennis now day, something really beautiful, strength and power, her mentality, just more good and good, in her way to Cinderella story in this championship, just blown me up,more and more, how beautiful she play,,,soon, she will become the world number 1, keep working, more humble, more calm, maintain your endurance, #welcome Champion Jelena!
Ostapenko will be the future star of WTA if she will polish her game. She makes too many unforced errors.
because she Klaus aggressively as Serena, Ivanovic or Sharapova Her style costs errors but she's young and I think she will learn how to improve her offensive style:)
She needs to improve her serve and let everything else be as it is. If she tries to lower her unforced errors it will mess with what makes her what she is - it will make her less aggressive.
muk as she's 20! of course, she will get stronger and have a good serve in 2-3 years. and her forehand is already a weapon. she will for sure not change to passive game style.
Florin Alexi And still won a GS despite that. What does it tell about the players who couldnt make it that far?
I didn't mean that she should change her style of playing, i was thinking that maybe she will play 1 or 2 safe points so she would be in a perfect position to hit the winner . Today Simona had a good chance to beat her with so many unforced errors.
ostapenko is your champion, by every definition of the word
This was a good Highligth video for me. Good job
Bravo . She played to win and won . Continuous pressure , no fear , great play . Determined to win .
Literally Halep was just trying to keep the rally going, the power of Ostapenko was too strong. Halep was up a break in the second and third sets but Ostapenko just kept fighting. I expect to see even bigger things from Ostapenko, but with a wide open women's field the rest of the year, I see Pliskova as the favorite for Wimbledon. Also this means Kerber is #1 until Wimbledon when she'll lose early again and lose all of her points.
This was the game that turned me into a ostapenko fan
Haha me too. She’s so cool
I am impressed. Congratulation from Sarajevo. Great win.
Impressionnante Jelena Ostapenko, la puissance qu'elle dégage est juste incroyable!
Super match!
Ostapenko must have watched my video on forehand lag, she does it perfectly in the power position. I want some of the winning % NOTE - I'm joking before some guy starts going off on one

Yes this is Simon, I like to watch tennis also believe it or not haha, and when I see something interesting I leave a comment also

For a bit of banter Bryan.

I love Ostapenko's smiley eyes! Hope to see her becoming a multi-slams winners!
Wow. Her big power carried her all the way through. Great win. Totally deserved!
My thing is this girl is a incredible human to have a slam at her age is huge..Even if she's a one hit wonder she is finer than most of us. We all wax wonderment at the Chris's and Serena's but this was a huge accomplishment and she is just so neat. I don't want her to be a phenom I want her to thrive as a women and a special person. God Bless her.
Exciting match, not sure why some are criticizing the style of play. It was defense (Halep) versus offense (Ostapenko) pure and simple. And frankly I prefer the type of offense we saw (sharp angles, DTL) versus the raw power offense that is exemplified by Serena. Hope Halep stays committed...she will win a Slam one day hopefully!
stefano78 well said
Amazing story! Congrats!
I am really excited about this girl. I love the fearlessness she played with.
I'm really liking Ostapenko's game but I wouldn't be surprised if she falls apart the rest of the year. The pressure of now bein a slam champion may catch up to her. She won this match mainly because of her fearlessness and being the underdog. She just swung away. I hope she's mentally strong enough to keep swinging away in the future.
Yikes this didn't age well
@@ob1917 no it did, the og commenters was completely right lol
yeah, you were right! she is crazy, too many unforced errors. she seems to go for the winner with every!!!!! shot. ;)
tennis won today
sometimes when a player is down in a match like ostepenko was, they relax and focus feeling they have nothing to lose. And they go on a tear. I remember Sabine liski doing that to Serena Williams at wimbledon a few years ago.
when halep congratulate her at the awarding ceremony, jelenas gesture was so damn cute.. she was like a 12yrs old who won her first ever award... so innocent vibe.
her growing up idol was SERENA WILLIAMS. so glad she won
no it wasn't ha ha, TV says everyone's "idol" is Serena, pure PC BS.
I was really pulling for Simona to win, nice of her to remain classy at the end.
She's simply amazing with strong mentallity and courage, she deserves more Grand Slams and I know she will get'em.
Ostapenko, Bouchard, and many other young players...a big talent and a big trophy doesn't make you a big champion. Four years after that victory, Ostapenko struggles while Halep won 2 grandslams and many other titles. That's a champion!
They should have let Naomi Broady present the trophy they missed comedic opportunity of the century.
Unbelievable performance by Penky
Great tournament Jelena, you deserve the title.
I love Penko so much. What a queen.
Hope daddy's boy Gulbis learn from Jelena
Didn’t know ostapenko was so good
Unforgettable 👏👏👏
Great win by Jelena. Congratulations! 👏🏆❤️
And in 2019 Ostanpenko is averaging abour 15 double faults, and losing mostly 1st rounds..... Hopefully she can fix her serve and start winning again!
Jelena did not deserve to win with 50+ errors, but did deserve the win with 50+ winners and only 8 winners from Halep. 8 winners from Halep? Can't believe that . But for any woman to win, one must go for the shot.
Ostapenko is a mind-boggling natural talent. All she has to do is get her unforced errors down a bit and she will be nearly invincible.
They both are my favorite players
I like Ostapenko...She is the rookie here and she is down both on 2nd and 3rd set and yet she came back. Halep is the one looking more like a rookie here. Halep needs a NEW COACH...
ecf08 She needs to stop grunting.
ecf08 both of them
get a new coach yourself
DChief89 I still think that she could do more with Wim...Darren is a great coach but at some points he doesn't help Halep that much with the tactics, he is trying to keep her calm (and that's a good thing) ,but Halep needs some help with the tactics because Darren can see the game better and he can analyse the game more on the bench...
DChief89 are you kidding me? before this coach, halep is in place where she is now. it means she has not progress at all.
6-4 3-0 ball for 4-0 ......incredible
only halep can lose from that score 1 time she lost to konta from set up and second set score 5-1 i cant expleing what wrong with her
lo que jugo ese torneo ❤💪
Yessssssssss Congratz champ !!!!
I am so so sorry for Simona! She wanted this final so bad :( Maybe next year
Her grunt is annoying as fuck, glad she lost
why is everyone so mean?^ I mean she tried her best, she was clearly crying and so sad and you are glad she lost? if you were passionate for something and it meant ur whole life and you lost in the most important bit, wouldn't you feel the same.. you should start thinking more about the people around u
not happening again
iamFerriz- Halep was insanely loud in this match, at some point it almost becomes a distraction to the opponent
Next year will be different since Maria, Vika, Petra, or maybe Serena will be back with their true form and gamestyle.
Ostapenko wins GrandSlam. Lmao at Radwanska, Wozniacki and the likes
They play tennis all over the world for a living and are all millionaires, I think they are laughing at you and I....
LOL yes. Aga and Woz never learn that defensive/finesse type players rarely won a GS these days. The last FINESSE (not defensive) player to win a GS is Schiavone. Even longer before that, with Hingis and Arantxa in 90's. Cibulkova, who is the shortest top player, managed to win YEC with her aggression. However, with all the money they pocketed, which are increasing every year, I don't think they need to worry about winning a GS either. No need to make a fool of ourselves by insulting them too far.
Uh, wait. I think we forgot someone so quickly. It's... Kerber LMAO. She is a defensive-minded player too. But Kerber was forced to be aggressive when she played Azarenka in AO QF, her nemesis. It was the turning point that gave her a lot of confidence en route to the AO title.
Another ridiculous Halep fan .... what do either of them have to do with Halep blowing her best chance at a slam !
You think that's funny? She was born on the same day Guga won his first title the french open. At the 20th anniversary of that feat she does the same thing.
DAMNED THIS WAS LIT !!!!
incroyable respect bravo👏🏻🏆🏆
Neaprakstāms prieks, milzīgi svētki ne tikai Jeļenai , bet arī Latvijai!
Apsveicam Latvija ! (Congratulations from France !)
Žanete Puriņa kad tad ar to, ka vina ir okupante? tagad tas nekas?
Dmitry Berzins Sveiks, trolli! Pats saprati,ko iepirdi?
A russian won for Latvia, big congrats from occupants hahaha
Žanete Puriņa Paldies, Alona!
Actually I think Bacsinsky had best chance to beat Ostaenko, but she didn't slice and drop shot enough on both side, she did it only when she was on defence. if she had won that Semi vs Ostapenko, Simona is RG winner now. but Now I personally think the best chance for Simona to win GS had slipped away. the future will belong to Svitilina & Ostapenko.
Well done Jelena. Keep working. Fantastic ofensive play.
Everyone saying that Ostapenko will be a great player, yet people forget that Roland Garros always has one hit wonders... Myskina, Majoli, Schiavone, Ruzici, Jausovec, Ivanovic (to a certain extent), etc.
Great win. Win a Grand Slam as young as possible!
She should make an effort to loose weight again, she had so much more agility here!
Such an elated opportunity for Jelena Ostapenko. Shall we continue to congratulate her?
The WTA tour isnt predictable anymore... everyone can be a champion. since The Queen not compete these seasons.. Congrat to Miss Ostapenko.. and I still wait for Halep to Win a GS this year
fearless, lines hunter, pushers and counterpunchers killer won congrats jelena ostapenko, maybe naomi broady stiil thinking how mean you were hitting that ball boy(something totally false) , while you already have won a grand slam, wozniacki will envy and even hate you even more now ;)
huhu.. :)
Jelena played like a champion, went after the ball (although many errors) and fought for every point. Halep on the other hand was pushing the ball, (so many lobs) and seemed to just give up at the end. Halep's grunting/screaming was awful in this match. Halep needs to captalize on these chances before Maria, Serena, Azarenka (a healed Kvitova ) come back, but it doesn't seem like she fights hard enough when it counts at slams.
she took risks while Halep was defending because she couldn't handle Ostapenko's speed! Well done to her
Admire???????
newyorkjapan lobs always work on Jelena, and she didn't excaclty push, she just didn't use enough variety,no droppers or come to net.
Jelena is more difficult to play only because she always risks, Maria and Vika play safer
serena said she will come back but nothing says she will go back to the same level, pregnancy changes your body a lot. And there are new faces (Ostapenko, Svitolina etc...)
What a Queen. Love her!
wow! to win against halep in her first grandslam final! i hope she remains a force to reckon with!
Ostapenko was thin then.
I will always root for the high risk shot makers over the boring ass pushers. Congrats, you little minx :)
Thank you Ostapenko! ET is out again!
ladies and gentlemen the champion for roland garros 2017 in women's single is Jelena Ostapenkooo :D GREAT MATCH GREAT FINALS
3:55 , that was ridiculous
can't wait to see ostapenko facing her match in power such as muguruza, azarenka, sharapova and kvitova how can she will deal with them because I felt sorry for halep because jelena has such great power againts halep who was too rely on her defensive skills without having the power to match jelena. Also Jelena was a former girl singles champs in wimbledon will she be able to sustain this level of playing or just went down like muguruza last year, because from now on she is a grandslam champion, can she cope with the pressure of not being the underdog anymore let us just wait and see
I thought she was still a girl O.O
Great Match!!
with style like that, Jelena is such a CLASH & BEAST for up coming Grand slam event, Wimbledon! she can win that, play in grass court need speed, beside big serve, her flat classic killer forehand just something BIG
I will not be surprised if she wins Wimbledon
Naomi Broady might be angry right now

The Best of All Times 🥰
Superb. Recovery time on extending racquets. is not a flaw. Probably need like TRON shoes to boost moral. Cause the players know they can hit the tennis ball. within reason become discouraged or the pressure of All eye's on me/them mentality and the agressive training & rigours camp. Pong & ATARI mentality. For enhancement on shoes.
